Corning Student Council named 2010 National Gold Council of Excellence!
For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, Corning High School has been awarded a 2010 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils. Over 150 high schools were named National Councils of Excellence but Corning High School is one of 131 of those high schools nationwide to receive the highly-esteemed honor of being named a National Gold Council of Excellence.
To meet the requirements for the National Council of Excellence award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of criteria. Those Councils named to the Gold level have met a greater number of the criterion than other nominated schools.

Honor Council Award
Corning High School was recently awarded an honor council award at the State Leadership Conference in Ames. This is the first time Corning StuCo has ever received this award.
Iowa high schools receiving Honor Council Recognition were: Bellevue, Bettendorf High School, Clear Creek Amana High School, Corning High School, Des Moines North, Eagle Grove High School, Emmetsburg High School, English Valleys High School, Estherville High School, Lewis Central High School, Oskaloosa High School, Western Dubuque High School, and Williamsburg High School.
Honor Council Awards are given to those schools who submit a scrapbook documenting school, community, state regional and national activities in which their council has taken part throughout the past year. The award is based on a criterion of excellence which student councils are encouraged to work toward. Points are awarded in each category and total point scores are accumulated to determine qualification for the award.
Meals from the Heartland
Student Council traveled to Des Moines on Friday, Sept. 4. Thousands of Iowa volunteers gathered in Hy-Vee Hall this September with the goal of packaging more than 4 million meals for the world’s hungry. Our student council worked a two hour shift and packaged 1500 meals! We also donated $350 to this cause. Great Job Corning StuCo!

Jimbo Sluice Video-Conference
Student Council Conference
Eleven students recently attended the Student Council in Ames. They included Tori, Shelby, Stacie, Shawnee, Lina, MacKenzie, Ciarra, Billy, Caleb, Dray and James. We had a great time. Jim was hypnotized by a hypnotist (ask him about his muscle man pose), we heard a great motivational speaker Josh Sundquist (In his motivational speeches, Josh shares stories about losing his leg to cancer, ski racing in the Paralympics, and playing jokes with his artificial leg to give inspiration for overcoming adversity and goal setting), and exchanged lots of great student council ideas with students from other organizations. See more of Josh at http://www.joshsundquist.com

RAGBRAI
We made it! RAGBRAI is over! yeah! Thanks to all who made pies, set up for pies, and sold pies and brats. The above and beyond the call of duty awards for pie making day were Tori, Billy, Trisha, Paige, Tiffany and Caleb. Those who really helped set up and cut all 130 pies were Shelby, Alyssa, Stacie, Tori, Kelsey, Megan, and Tiffany. I had lots of great help on the official date, but those that stayed from the beginning to very end were Tori, Tiffany and Shelby! You guys were amazing! Also extra thanks to Mrs. Drake for grilling for us, the Methodist Church for selling lots of our pies, and my daughters Brooke and Jessica for helping too! We had a fun day seeing all the riders, we had to do the Red Raider Song (that was difficult), get stamp tatooed, get interviewed, and have our picture taken several times (I think they liked our Red Raider Sign). A little cool and drizzly but it was a good day!
Car Wash
We held a car wash on June 12th. We were very busy and washed a lot of cars! Thanks to those who supported Student Council and especially to Dick Blazek for letting us use his car wash! Those who stayed the whole time received a coupon to take a strike off their attendance at the pie making day! You guys are awesome!
Homecoming 2009
Homecoming will be held on October 2. The king coronation will be at the Pep Rally on Oct. 1, the parade on October 2 and the dance on Saturday, Oct. 3. The theme this year is Super Heroes. More information will be coming!

StuCo Atendance Policy
If you miss 3 meetings you are out of student council. This includes regular meeting as well as extra activities including duties for homecoming, going to the board meeting, etc. If you have a conflict with another school activity you are excused. However, you MUST TELL the president (Tori) or Mrs. Pott BEFORE the meeting or you will be counted as unexcused. If you are sick the day of a meeting that is also excused. You can have a strike removed by asking Mrs. Pott for an extra duty for you to do. However, you must ask her before the 3rd strike, once you have that 3rd strike you will be removed from student council. You will need to sign the attendance sheet at each meeting. If you are there, but you do not sign the attendance sheet, you will be counted as absent. It is your responsibility to make sure you sign it.
