coxbaseball@verizon.netA Message From Coach Conroy July 6, 2009
To all of our players, coaches, parents and fans,
I would like to thank you for an amazing year. It most definitely was a team effort. On the field this years team recorded its fifth district championship and second regional championship in school history. The second highest number of wins (22) and second best finish in school history (State semi-finals). For the second time in school history a Cox team defeated the eventual State champion. For the first time in school history the Falcons defeated a ranked team in the country.(Menchville ranked 1st, 2nd and 26th in three different polls)
This years squad was led by seven incredible seniors. Jeremy Hostetter, second base, defensive specialist, team comedian and barber. Ryan Muncy, great defensive first basemen, did all the little things we needed to have a championship team, walk off hit vs. Kempsville. Ryan Mattes, pitcher, second team All District, second team All Tidewater, 10 wins, 3 saves, will play baseball at Campbell University. Richie Salter, pitcher/DH, first team All District, All Region, All Tidewater and second team All State, 10 wins, 3 saves, will play baseball at Norfolk State. Kyle Profilet, team captain, outfield, honorable mention All District, best defensive outfielder in the region, game winning hit against Menchville and walk off hit versus Western Branch, Kyle will be playing baseball at Longwood. Austin Herb, team captain, catcher, second team All District, 3 run homer to tie the Kempsville game, came back from a torn MCL to drive in 2 runs in the State Quarter final game, Austin will play baseball at the College of Albemarle. Chris Taylor, team captain, short stop, first team All District, All Region, All Tidewater, All State, District, Region, Tidewater and State player of the year. Simply one of the best or the best player to ever play baseball at Cox. Chris will play baseball at The University of Virginia.
Anyone watching the Falcons realized it was a total team effort. This years squad received contributions from everyone on the team. Twenty six players appeared in a Varsity game and an incredible eighteen started a Varsity game. Three of these players getting their first start in the Regional Quarter-finals. Off the field the program had many successful fundraisers, the wonderful Cox baseball website, a fantastic trip to Disney World, and many improvements to the Falcons nest and the facility. None of these along with our on the field success could be attained without our parent and community support.
No one will ever forget the 2009 Falcon Championships and accomplishments. What everyone will remember most will be how we won and what we overcame, the heart stopping come backs, the never say die attitude, the belief that no matter who was in the line up they would do their job and we would find a way to win. I know that I will never forget this special group. The games, wins, championships, the come backs and those magical rides home with Ms. G.
Thank you for a memorable year and all of your support!
Go Falcons!
Coach Conroy
-If anyone has pictures from this season, please email them to me. I would love to put them up in the Falcons nest. The commemorative bats will be arriving in August, all players and coaches will receive one.
