Craven County 4-H Sponsors Bike Rodeo!
Remember the feeling of first learning to ride a bicycle on your own – without training wheels and without a parent’s balancing hand? Remember that sudden rush of freedom?
If you have to strain to think back that far, well, maybe it’s time to strap on a helmet and saddle up. Because not only is bicycling fun and freeing, it’s an excellent way to get healthy exercise.
That’s one of the reasons that sixty million Americans bicycle. Whether you’re an avid mountain biker or simply trying to incorporate cycling into your daily routine, you too can reap the many health benefits of bicycling. Bicycling, however, is not without its risks.
Craven County 4-H is sponsoring a bicycle skills event designed to teach bicyclists the skills they need in order to be better cyclists. By learning bike handling and traffic skills, one can enjoy bicycling more and reduce the chance of injury.
The rodeo will be held Tuesday, April 23rd, 4:30pm-6:30 pm at Craven County Agriculture Center. Bicyclists ages 5-18 are invited to attend. This event is made up of a series of stations, each dealing with an important aspect of safe cycling. Participants will have their bicycles inspected and will then learn about and practice bicycle-handling skills that will increase their enjoyment of bicycling and could some day save their lives. Parents are invited to participate and must accompany youth on-site during the event.

Pick a topic whether its horses, wildlife, cooking, or anything you may be interested in. We will give you step-by-step guidance on developing a prize-winning presentation.
What are the Benefits of Participating in 4-H Public Speaking Competitions?

Do you set goals for yourself or do others set them for you? How do you feel when you accomplish something? Does what you accomplish make a difference to you? What if you are not quite satisfied with your accomplishments? How can you get the most out of 4-H and receive satisfaction for your goals?
The 4-H Achievement Plan will help you with these things.
- Setting your goals and making plans to reach them.
- Enriching your 4-H program as you grow.
- Evaluating your own efforts and accomplishments and by taking a look with your leader as to how well you have met your goals.
- Reaching more of your goals.
- Setting new goals that will help you grow and develop your skills and personality.
To be successful your plan will require loyalty to your 4-H club, group, your county 4-H program, state, nation, and world! Service to others is very important. Creativity, responsibility, and leadership will be required. The satisfaction you feel for your job well done will make it worthwhile.
To achieve your highest goals, plan your 4-H participation and set your goals at the start of your year or immediately after achieving a lower level. Use this achievement form to talk with your family and 4-H Leaders. Ask their advice in helping to set your goals and to help you accomplish them.

InvenTeams - Introducing Students to the World of Invention
The InvenTeam initiative, created by the Lemelson-MIT Program, offers an unparalleled opportunity for high school age youth to cultivate their creativity and experience invention. InvenTeams are teams of high school youth/students, teachers, and mentors that receive grants up to $10,000 each to invent technological solutions to real-world problems. Each InvenTeam chooses its own problem to solve.
In 2012
the Essex and Clinton County’s NY Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) group received an InvenTeam grant for their invention idea to develop small pre-filters to improve the operation of bio-sand filters to provide clean water to households in developing countries (learn more here). They are the first 4-H club to receive an InvenTeam grant.
You can visit the InvenTeams web site (http://web.mit.edu/inventeams/) to learn more about the InvenTeams program and how to apply. 4-H and Lemelson-MIT are working on resources to support and promote youth invention. We hope to see more 4-H clubs participate in InvenTeams. Applications must be completed online. The deadline date is April 5, 2013.

Congratulations to 4-H'er, Gabby Venturini, of Wilkes County on her state winning 2012 essay!
2013 Essay Topic: Reducing the Usage of Bee-Killing Pesticides in my Community
Pesticides are a fact of modern life, but misuse or overuse of pesticides, or making poor choices when selecting and applying pesticides can be devastating to honey bees and other pollinators. The 4-H’ers are encouraged to learn about bee-killing pesticides being used in their communities – by homeowners, businesses, or farmers. Then, they should investigate how the impact of those pesticides on honey bees can be lessened.
The scope of the research is an essential judging criterion, accounting for 40% of your score. The number of sources consulted, the authority of the sources, and the variety of the sources are all evaluated.
Personal interviews with beekeepers, farmers and others familiar with the subject are valued sources of information and should be documented. Sources, which are not cited in the endnotes, should be listed in a “Resources” or “Bibliography” list.
Even if dated 2012, all rules still apply:

County 4-H Horticulture Team Excels at State Competition
Do you know a vegetable seed from a sunflower seed? How about the different leaf structure between a dogwood and maple tree? Would you be able to identify 100 samples from varying commodity groups like Flowers and Indoor Plants, Vegetables, Landscape Ornamentals, and Fruits, Nuts and Berries? I am proud to say that at least six of our county 4-H youth know the answers to these questions and many more! The Craven County 4-H Horticulture team, led by Dr. Tom Glasgow, spent last Saturday at NC State University in Raleigh competing in the State 4-H Horticulture competition. This is the third year Craven County 4-H has participated and our winning reputation was on the line. The team has received 1st place in the junior division for the last two years running. These young men work hard all year long to learn plant identification skills, basic horticulture principles and also judge quality based on specific criteria. This year, six of our County 4-H members, competed both as a team and individually. The team is made up of Nathaniel Glasgow, David Lynch, Seth Schneider, Zane Zechman, Tyler Toohey and Jack Roberson. They competed against six other teams from across the state and we are extremely proud they brought home the gold again in 2012. They have spent countless hours studying and preparing for this event. Plans are already being made as they advance into the senior division next year. But for now, they can relax starting their summer basking in that winning feeling.
Don’t be fooled though, Craven County 4-H doesn’t take the summer off. In fact, that’s when the fun and learning really gets cranked up. Our 2012 Summer Fun program is shaping up to be quite exciting with field trips and activities planned that include Citizenship Academy, Babysitter’s Paradise, Taylor’s Creek Paddle Tour & Cloverbud Camp! Each of these activities is designed as hands-on day camp opportunities for all county youth ages 5-18. It is not necessary to be enrolled as a 4-H member in order to participate. Cloverbud Camp is a good introduction to 4-H as youth ages 5-8 learn what it means to be a 4-H member by completing fun projects, playing games and learning songs! Citizenship Academy will give teens a chance to learn about the different aspects of citizenship and local government in Duplin County with other district 4-H members. Check out our complete summer schedule and registration information online at http://craven.ces.ncsu.edu or stop by the Craven County Extension office located at 300 Industrial Drive outside of New Bern at the Clarks Road exit off of the Hwy 70 W bypass. You may also call (252.633.1477) or email Wendy Paschal, 4-H Extension Agent (wendy_paschal@ncsu.edu) with any questions. Craven County 4-H has something for everyone with a variety of community, military and project-specific clubs located across our county.

PURPLE UP! FOR MILITARY KIDS!
April marks the nation’s “Month of the Military Child,” a time to honor youth impacted by the deployment of a family member. In celebration, North Carolina Operation: Military Kids (OMK), part of N.C. Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program, invites you to join the first “Purple Up! For Military Kids” in North Carolina on Friday, April 13.
OMK needs your help to honor our military youth during Month of the Military Child by showing your support for military families. North Carolinian's are encouraged to wear purple on April 13 as a visible way to show support and to thank military youth for their sacrifices.
North Carolina OMK is participating with other OMK states for the Second Annual Purple Up! For Military Kids! The color purple symbolizes, in military terms, reaching out to all branches of the military. OMK hopes everyone will take this opportunity to appreciate and celebrate these young heroes.
North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at N.C. State University, is part of Operation: Military Kids (OMK), an effort sponsored by Army, Child, Youth and School Services in collaboration with National 4-H Headquarters, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, American Legion, Military Child Education Coalition, National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies and other state and local organizations. These partners help support military children, youth and their families who are experiencing a love one’s deployment.
Children and youth whose parents have been deployed live with the uncertainty and concern for their parents on a daily basis. Military families learn to be flexible, but lengthy deployments can be difficult for military youth, and many have experienced their parents leaving multiple times.
While military children look the same to teachers, friends and the community after a parent deploys, their lives have changed dramatically. Through OMK events, military youth can connect with other youth in similar situations and to other youth in the community. Operation: Military Kids is a national effort to support children of deployed soldiers from all branches of the military including Guard and Reserve. Activities for military kids are ongoing throughout the year and throughout North Carolina.
"Purple Up! For Military Kids" was first created in 2011 by New Hampshire OMK. To honor our military youth, all OMK states have joined together to celebrate on a national "Purple Up! For Military Kids."
Remember to submit "Purple Up! For Military Kids" photographs to OMK for posting on the NC OMK website and Facebook page. Military youth and families from across North Carolina and the U.S. will see them. To learn more about "Purple Up! For Military Kids" and Operation: Military Kids, visit www.operationmilitarykids.org or contact Scott Enroughty, NC OMK project coordinator.

Destiny Oakley, Craven County 4-H, Recognized for Volunteer Service
The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Destiny participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Craven County 4-H in New Bern, where she is a member.
Destiny earned her award by participating as an at-large member with the Craven County 4-H program and serving on the County 4-H Council. Elected as Secretary of the Council for 2012, Destiny has been a constant presence since it began just two short years ago. Her creative ideas and innovative outlook has helped build the county program, which offers community clubs, school enrichment and special interest activities for youth ages 5-18 in Craven County. Last summer, Destiny taught a portion of Cloverbud Camp focusing on reading and illiteracy among elementary-age youth. The two-day camp was designed to offer youth ages 5-8 a variety of hands-on activities introducing them to the world of 4-H.
“The great thing about Destiny is she can always be counted upon to volunteer when asked. She has helped us with the Share Your Christmas Food Drive for the past two years and helped hand out Hero Packs as part of the Operation Military Kids 4-H program. She is smart and dedicated to the organizations she helps,” said Wendy G. Paschal. 4-H Extension Agent for Craven County. “It has been a pleasure to have her join our 4-H program and lead our youth in the 21st century.”
Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. More than 345,000 young people across American have been considered for these awards since the program began in 1995.
“The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John R. Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “In recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer service activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”
“Demonstrating civic responsibility through community volunteerism is an important part of life,” said NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. “These Honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate.”
Program applications were distributed last September through all public and private middle level and high schools, Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and affiliates of HandsOn Network. After Local Honorees were named, state-level judges selected State Honorees, Distinguished Finalists and Certificates of Excellence recipients. Volunteer activities were judged on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact, and person growth.
Enter a chance to Win $500 for your 4-H project or activity!
First Pioneer Insurance Agency in Asheville NC is giving 4-H’ers a chance to WIN $500 for their 4-H project or activity!
On February 15th they launched a contest on Facebook for all active 4-H members currently working on a project or activity. To enter 4-H’ers simply need to email a photo of their project along with their name, county, and a brief description of what they’re working on. They will then load it on our Facebook page where they can have family and friends “like it”. The photo with the most “likes” will be the winner!
They also want to get the community involved! For every “like”, they will donate $1 towards sending kids to 4-H camp (up to $1,000). Entries will be grouped by county, and the money will be awarded to the county whose entries collectively have the most “likes”!
Please spread the word and share this information with your active 4-H members. We have attached a flyer with all of this information for you to share with others. Please feel free to contact us by email (michellev@pioneerinsurance.com) or call us at 800-547-1495 with any questions.

NC State 4-H Livestock Program Needs Your Help!
Due to budget cuts at the university level the NC State 4-H Livestock Program is in REAL need of funds, currently Brent Jennings, NC State 4H Specialist, has very limited funds to support his statewide efforts. This problem needs to be addressed NOW !!
Dr. Todd See, Dept Head Animal Science, has just announced a fund raising effort, we
are calling "FUNDING THE FUTURE". This effort is an attempt to provide some much needed
funds, in a timely fashion. This effort is the result of some really "out of the box" thinking...
it is our hope that each of you will assist with this effort.
Details of this project are simple, but the goal is HIGH !!! We are selling tickets for a drawing to
be held at the 2012 NC State Fair, one half the proceeds from the ticket sales will go directly to
the NC State 4H Livestock Program. The remaining half will be awarded by random drawing to 5
drawn tickets, each of the designated youth programs will receive equal amounts. Purchasers of the tickets MUST DESIGNATE at the time of purchase to what youth program the proceeds should go to in the event their ticket is drawn. No one person can be awarded the money, it MUST go to a youth program. The youth program designated is entirely at the discretion of the ticket purchaser. The purchase price of the ticket is entirely tax deductible, all the funds will be handled through the Wilson County Livestock Association which has 501(c)(3) status, checks should be made payable to the Wilson County Livestock, Assoc.
Now the real "out of the box" part...... cost of each ticket will be 1000.00 each. We realize this is probably the most expensive ticket ever for a drawing of this nature, but our hope is, that groups purchase tickets, not necessarily individuals. The goal is to sell 100 tickets one in each county. If we reach that lofty goal....then NC State 4-H will receive $50,000 and 5 local youth programs will be awarded $10,000 each !!!!
I realize this is a lot to digest, but give this deal some thought, we believe it can and will work, but the success of this endeavor hinges on folks like YOU !!!!
If you have any questions or need tickets..... give me a call !!!

Annual Achievement Banquet - November 10th!
Craven County 4-H held it's Annual Achievement Banquet on Thursday, November 10th at the Agriculture Center in New Bern. County 4-H members, volunteers and Extension staff enjoyed a wonderful meal from Famous Subs' to start the evening. The program included a Thought for the Day, "Happy 236th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps", written by Ms. Destiny Oakley.
Clad in cami’s with boots in hand,
They are scattered all over this land.
They are forever known as heroes to all,
And are always there to answer the call.
We see them walk by every day,
And we need to remember to say thanks and pray,
For the things they do for you and me,
As they travel far across the sea.
Fighting for our country is what they do,
Away from their families, and their friends, too.
No one knows what happens behind the scenes,
But everyone knows they’re US Marines!

Joining the Revolution of Responsibility
For more than 101 years, the 4-H Program of North Carolina has been engaging youth in programs that help develop skills for a lifetime. These skills range from communication to community service and from goal setting to leadership. Regardless of the skill learned, the benefits gathered from a young person participating in the 4-H Program are priceless.
The 4-H is the largest youth development program in the nation, serving more than 6.5 million youth annually. Administered by North Carolina Cooperative Extension at NC State University and NC A&T State University, 4-H serves youth in all 100 counties in the state plus the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians through a network of 100 County Extension Offices. 4-H is managed jointly by both a professional and volunteer staff. North Carolina 4-H, one of the leading 4-H programs in the country, has more than 218,000 youth participants and more than 21,000 volunteers working together to deliver the more than 100 projects, opportunities, and events offered annually through the program.
4-H is unique in that it offers experiences to the most urban young person and youth in rural areas by providing the opportunity to participate in community 4-H clubs, K-12 outreach programs (delivered in school classrooms), day and overnight camps, and other special interest opportunities. North Carolina 4-H serves the sons and daughters of our military personnel through the 4-H Military Program located throughout the state, primarily on military bases.
Youth members can participate in a variety of projects in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, healthy living, citizenship and leadership. Beyond the excitement of learning something new through a project, youth have the opportunity to participate in citizenship and leadership conferences, travel the state, become involved in their community through service, and meet new friends in a safe and comfortable setting.
4-H youth are a living, breathing, culture-changing Revolution for doing the right thing, breaking through obstacles and pushing our country forward by making a measure-able difference right where they live.
If you would like to learn more about 4-H, or have a family member wanting to join 4-H, contact Wendy Paschal, Craven County 4-H Agent at (252) 633-1477 or wendy_paschal@ncsu.edu. Visit the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development website at: nc4h.org.

JAPAN DISASTER SCAMS
Not even three hours after the earthquakes and tsunami struck Japan, scams taking advantage of this disaster began appearing. Scams range from fake anti‐virus downloads to fraudulent donation sites. Scammers are posing as charitable organizations and distributing mass emails or creating new domains, most using the words “Japan tsunami,” “relief,” and “donations.” It was estimated that 1.7 million fraudulent pages were created since the disaster. Some scammers use the domains and emails to request donations while others are harvesting email addresses and personal information from users. Other emails contain viruses that are downloaded onto the victim’s computer when opened. Another classic scam, known as the 419 message, is an email that convinces potential victims to advance funds with the hope of a larger return due to a settlement of millions of dollars with an earthquake and tsunami victim.1 In another scam, a link on Facebook’s website to a purported video of a whale being tossed from the ocean into a building leads to a fraudulent You Tube site. The fraudulent site is able to gather personal information which can be bought and sold on the cyber-black market. The link even has a hidden “like” button that causes the user to spread the scam to others on their own Facebook.
RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONSThese scams have the ability to install viruses on computers, collect and sell personal information, facilitate identity theft, and collect donations for personal use. Anyone wishing to donate to this cause should be cautious.
- Only donate to legitimate and recognized organizations directly through the organization’s website.
- Be skeptical of unsolicited email requests for donations even if they appear legitimate. The email could contain a computer virus or could be used to gain your personal information through a donor form.
- Be skeptical of unsolicited donation requests received via text message and social media sites.
- Checks should be made payable to an organization, never an individual.
- Request and keep receipts from your donation.
- Use caution when providing credit card information over the phone.

Craven County 4-H FIRST ® Robotics Team Receives Sponsorship Support from JCPenney
Support will help local Havelock students prepare for FIRST Regional Competition
FIRST® team # 3715 at MCAS Cherry Point’s Community Center is one of 500 high school teams being sponsored this year by JCPenney as part of the company’s multi-year goal to bring FIRST to more than 1,100 communities in the U.S. FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a not-for-profit organization founded by Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology by engaging them in innovative robotics competitions. The 4-H Robotics Team is a rookie team that has spent six intense weeks designing and building an original robot for the FIRST Regional Competition scheduled for April 7-9, 2011 in Raleigh.
“Having our students involved in FIRST is not just about increasing educational opportunities in science and technology; but also instilling well-rounded life capabilities such as self-confidence, communication and leadership,” said Wendy Paschal, Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development in Craven County. “JCPenney’s sponsorship demonstrates a commitment to investing in our local youth by making participation in FIRST possible.”
JCPenney’s sponsorship of 500 FIRST teams this season marks the beginning of the company’s philanthropic goal to introduce FIRST to more schools and communities throughout the U.S. and encourage greater participation among minority and female students. JCPenney’s legacy of working with youth organizations through its signature charity, JCPenney Afterschool, helps make it possible for more students to become involved in life-enriching learning opportunities.
A short six weeks ago, the 4-H Robotics Team received this year’s challenge, “LOGO MOTION™” and a kit of parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC and a mix of automation components – but no instructions. Working with professional engineering Mentors, the team has spent the last six weeks building a robot that can maneuver a field flanked by poles and earn points by hanging as many triangle, circle and square logo pieces on each pole as possible. Bonus points will be awarded for each robot that can hang and assemble logo pieces to form the FIRST logo as well as deploy a “mini-bot” to climb vertical poles positioned within the middle of the field. Competitions measure the effectiveness of each team’s robot and the students’ ability to collaborate effectively.
Schools, communities and government acknowledge the need to improve the country’s global economic competitiveness by increasing aptitudes in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among America’s youth. Studies show that FIRST students are three times more likely to major in engineering in college, 10 times as likely to have an apprenticeship their freshman year, more than twice as likely to pursue a science or technology career, and nearly four times as likely to pursue a career in engineering.
Currently in its 20th Season, FRC anticipates close to 2,100 teams will compete in 48 Regionals in the U.S., Canada and Israel, as well as nine district competitions and one state championship in Michigan ― all leading up to the 2011 FIRST Championship at the Edward Jones Dome, April 27-30, in St. Louis, Mo. This season, participating FRC high school students are eligible to apply for more than $14 million in scholarships from leading universities and colleges.
About FIRST®
Accomplished inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. Based in Manchester, N.H., FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering. With support from three out of every five Fortune 500 companies and more than $14 million in college scholarships, the not-for-profit organization hosts the FIRST®
Robotics Competition (FRC® ) and FIRST®
Tech Challenge (FTC® ) for high-school students, FIRST®
LEGO® League (FLL® ) for 9 to 14-year-olds, (9 to 16-year-olds outside the U.S. and Canada) and Junior FIRST®
LEGO® League (Jr.FLL™) for 6 to 9-year-olds. Gracious Professionalism™ is a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. To learn more about FIRST, go to www.usfirst.org.

Billy S. Murray, Sr. Scholarship
Billy S. Murray, Sr. was a professional farrier and a long time 4-H leader and supporter in the Southeast District. Billy led 4-H horse clubs in both New Hanover and Brunswick counties. He was also an active member of several horse organizations in Southeastern NC, including the Carolina Classic Horsemen’s Association, the Seagate Saddle Club, the Brunswick County and Columbus County Horsemen’s Association. This scholarship was established to carry on Billy’s tradition of supporting youth through 4-H horse activities.
