Do you have camping on your mind? Well wait no more because this weekend is sure to be filled with memories and a Scoutin' great time. I've attached this weekend's agenda to help you prepare. Please make a few notes:

* Saturday fishing will begin at 11:00am with the Park Ranger. So plan on bringing a picnic lunch. The Ranger will be bringing fishing poles for us to borrow, but feel free to bring your own gear for that down-home catch.

* The weekend weather looks fair, but there is a small chance for rain on Friday.

* The Pack will be providing meals for Saturday's dinner as well as Sunday's breakfast. Families will need to provide all other meals, as well as non-disposable water bottles for all meals... Parents and siblings included.

* Plan on arriving as early as 5:00pm on Friday to have enough daylight to set up your campsite.

* If you will be joining us on Saturday only, plan on arriving by 8:30am dressed in Class A uniforms. The Saturday morning Pack Meeting will begin promptly at 9:00am.

* Location updates for all activities will be posted at my campsite on Friday night. Follow the signs to my campsite. We will be in the "Bright Star" campground.

November to Remember

Howdy Pack 1978!

Is everyone ready for a November to Remember? We have many exciting events and ceremonies to prepare for. First and foremost, let’s make sure we exercise our right as citizens of this great country…

Tuesday, November 5th – Election Day

·  Parents, get out to your precinct’s designated voting location and VOTE! This is one of our greatest rights, as well as one of our greatest responsibilities. Make sure your voice is heard. Take a second to tell your scout what voting in an election means to you.

Saturday, November 10th (morning) – Popcorn Pickup

·  It’s Popcorn Pickup time!! The exact pickup time and location will be determined a little later in the week. Your Den Leader will have details for you when they become available. Be sure to quickly get this su-u-u-per delicious popcorn out to those who have supported your son’s scouting experience.

Monday, November 12th – Veteran’s Day (observed)

·  Happy Veteran’s Day: Thank you to all of our Pack Fathers, Mothers, Grandparents, Uncles, and Aunts who have served in our nation’s armed forces.

·  Calling all Scouts that attend Ethridge Elementary!! All scouts have been requested by the school’s administration to wear their Class A uniform to school, as we will perform the U.S. Flag Ceremony in celebration of Veteran’s Day. The flag ceremony will begin at 8:00 am during the morning assembly in the Ethridge cafeteria. Please let me know if your scout is interested in participating in the Color Guard, though there will only be 5 scouts selected. As always, we represent the Boy Scouts of America, so please look your best in your uniforms… wear you shirts tucked in, belts, neckerchief, and sliders.

Monday, November 19th – Pack Meeting

·  Come one, come all… we will be celebrating the progress of our newest scouts. Be sure not to miss our Bobcat ceremony. We will be visited by very special guests who will honor the first rank in the scouting journey towards the Arrow of Light… the Bobcat rank.

·  We will also be recognizing all scouts with well deserved belt loops, pins, activity badges, and much more.

·  We will begin promptly at 6:45pm in Schreiber Hall at First United Methodist Church in Garland.

Thursday, November 22nd – Happy Thanksgiving

·  From my family to yours, we wish you all of the best during this season of giving thanks. Always remember that there is much to be grateful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Gratefully yours,

Mario Mojica

July Activities!

Happy Independence Day

Today is an AMAZING day as we celebrate the 4th of July – a reminder of our nation’s Independence. On this day 236 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was signed and approved by the Continental Congress – paving a road to sovereignty and freedom for the 13 colonies. As you enjoy your relaxing afternoon cookouts, swimming parties, and fireworks show, I remind everyone to always remember the cost of freedom and liberty. We’ve been blessed that so many have sacrificed their lives and families to fight for the rights and privileges that we enjoy today – and sometimes take for granted. Take a moment today and give thanks and prayers to all of the men and women who are still serving this Great Nation’s military thousands of miles away from their loved ones, and remember what they are fighting for…. Us!

Upcoming Pack Events

Here are a few reminders and updates to our Pack Summer calendar:

Saturday, July 14th from 10am to 12pm – Pack Cleanup at Advantage Storage. I am encouraging everyone to come out and lend a hand to  Den 2 Wolves, Ghost Pirate Patrol, and Cottonmouth Patrol as we give back to those who give so much to us. It’s going to b a bit warm, but don’t worry! Your Cubmaster will have some cold treats standing by after the cleanup is over!

Saturday, July 14th – Cub World (on the Summer calendar). We will not be hosting this event this summer after all. We are going to give the Summer Sun a small break. INSTEAD……

Sunday, July 15th from 5pm to 7pmPACK ROLLER SKATING PARTY!!! Get your family out of the heat and come join our Pack for an amazingly awesome Skating Party in the Ice Cold Air Conditioning! The DJ is gonna help us “shake it until we break it” as we strut our stuff on the skating rink. This will be a fantastic time to earn that Roller Skating belt loop. We will have the entire skating ring to ourselves. The Pack will cover the admission of all scouts. There’s a discounted admission for the rest of the family of $5 each (skates included). Bring a few bucks if you get hungry because the concession will be rockin’ the pizza, nachos, funnel cakes, pretzels, candy, and much more – Oh Yeah! I’ll see EVERYONE at the skating rink!

Thursday, July 19th starting at 1pm – Pack Webelos Camp. This is a Webelos-only campout, specifically designed for our Pack scouts to polish their Cub Scout experience with Boy Scout skills. We will have a great time through swimming, whittling, leatherworking, knot tying, BB gun/archery shooting, hiking, and much more. You don’t want to miss out on all of this fun! Please turn in all camp fees for scouts and leader ($45 each) by July 9th. The fees are due to your den leader. Scouts will arrive at Camp Wisdom parking lot at 1:00pm on Thursday, July 19th. Parents, please join us at the Amphitheater at 11:00am on Sunday, July 22nd for the closing ceremony. This is where your scout will be presented with the Pack 1978 Webelos Neckerchief. You will then be invited to visit our camping area before you return home with your scout.

Remember, either of these events (above) count towards the National Summer Activity Pin, for the month of July.

Have a great holiday!!

2012 Pack Summer Calendar

To earn the National Summer Acitivty Pin, scouts must participate in one Pack Activity per month. (One in June and July, then either one in August or September.)

In order for the Pack to continue to earn the Journey to Excellence Gold Award and the National Summertime Pack Award we need to host at least one activity per month and your help is needed, please sign up to volunteer.

Twilight Camp is OPEN Friday & Saturday!

Twilight Camp is OPEN Friday & Saturday! Please read the following post from the Camp Director and spread the news!

"Camp is open! We will start on time at 4PM, make sure if you are a WEBELOS that you bring your tent and sleeping gear for the overnighter (if you have not paid you can do so before camp starts) and everyone be ready for the Egg Drop at dinner today! Swap contest is on so turn in your swap before the flag ceremony. And a special surprise ... we will open the ranges for all campers on Sat from 9 until noon.

Staff met last night and we are doing a blended rotation today but not all ranks will be able to use all the ranges today so we wanted to give everyone an opportunity to do so before we took down the camp on Sat. We are doing this "Parent and Pal" style so make sure you have enough two deep leadership for the boys you bring and only Scouts in the Camp tshirt will be able to participate.

On the matter of refunds:

It historically has not been BSA policy to refund due to "acts of God" that are outside of their control. What many don't know is that all our costs are sunk long before camp and any profit made from camp pays for Council activities that a...re run at a loss such as local BSA outreach, afterschool programs at Camp Wisdom and to fund Packs and Troops that are not able to support themselves financially such as those in low income areas in our District. While I understand the issue from the Parents side we must all appreciate that this is not a simple matter as the BSA and Twilight Camp is not just some for profit enterprise like a Day School or YMCA. For those that wish to take up the matter you are welcome to contact our DE, Justice Hill. His email is justice.hill@scouting.org."

Friendly tip: Some of the park grounds are still muddy please make sure your scout wears appropriate shoes and be ready to clean them before he enters the house.

Twilight Camp Cancelled for Thursday, June 7th

Twilight Camp has been cancelled for today Thursday, June 7th. The Camp Director John Meek posted "I have spoken with our District Executive and the City of Richardson. The CoR has requested we do not use the park due to ground saturation and the damage that we will cause to the park. In looking at the weather I think it is a good idea to cancel anyway as we are a 50/50 for more thunderstorms this afternoon. We are still watching the weather for Friday and will communicate camp status by 10AM Friday." Please spread the news to the rest of your dens.

Are you ready for Twilight Camp?

Here are a few reminders/tips for to make sure that our boy’s have a great time starting June 4th:

The What-To-Bring Essentials

·   Camp T-Shirt: Wear your camp T-Shirt all week long. This is the uniform of the week. If you didn’t buy an extra shirt, make plans to wash it every day.

·   Shoes and socks: no sandals, flip flops, or crocs are allowed.

·   5-gallon “buddy” bucket: will serve as the boys’ chair as well as their storage bucket

·  What goes inside of the bucket??

o  Sack Lunch: pack your son a sack lunch every day. If you do not, he will not eat. If the food needs to stay cold, include an ice pack. But remember the more you pack the heavier it will be for him to carry.

o  Water bottle: bring a filled water bottle. There will be a limited supply of cold water throughout the evenings to refill.

o  Cap or Boonie hat: it will be hot and sunny all week. I recommend a boonie hat to block the sun from their necks as well.

o  Sunscreen: your son will need to have sunblock applied before he arrives. The bigger the SPF, the better. Put it in the bucket. No aerosol cans. Mist or cream only.

o  Bug Spray: We will be deep in the park and there will be bugs. No aerosol cans. Mist or cream only. There is a combination sunscreen / bugspray you can buy called “Bullfrog”. It’s a little expensive though.

o  A few dollars: there will be a Trading post with snacks and drink. I will allow the boys a chance o visit at lunch time to visit and buy, but NO sodas.

o  Wet Wipes or Hand sanitizer: for lunch time cleanup

o  First-Aid kit: a travel size kit will do just fine for just-in-case boo-boos. For bigger things, there will be a first aid station on site.

o  Bucket Notes: Label everything with your son’s name, Pack #, and even a cell # should be on the bucket, water bottle, etc. These things will come up missing. Do not make the bucket too heavy. Your son will need to carry their buckets all evening and all week.

The What-To- Do Essentials

·   Drink Water, Water, Water: Have your son drink a lot of water starting today! We must get them hydrated before camp starts. Make sure they go to the bathroom before each night of camp. It will be hot. Dehydration is the quickest way to an unhappy time at camp.

·   Arrive on time: Make sure that your son is at the flagpole in the center of park (near the big pavilion) at the specified time. This means you should arrive about 15 minutes earlier to park, catch the shuttle, and walk to the flagpole.

o  Monday arrival time at the flagpole is 3:30pm.

o  The arrival time for the rest of the week is 4:00pm.

o  Back these times up by at least 15 minutes.

·   Drop off point: The camp will be near Parking Lot C at Breckenridge Park. DO NOT drop off at Parking Lot C. The drop off point is at Parking Lot B. There will be shuttles picking up at B and dropping off at C. Parents, you can park and ride the shuttle with your son and escort them to the camp area, then immediately make your way back to the shuttle. See slide 5 of the attachment.

Non Essential, but Fun Stuff

SWAPS – plan on making about 25 small creative crafts to SWAP with other scouts. These are awesome ice breakers to meet other boys. This is not required, but fun to do. Start with a box of safety pins to clip these crafts on your hat. The craft could be as simple as a small rope knots, bottle caps painted as a favorite bug with stickers “eyes”, etc.

Who will be the CAKE BOSS?

Hi Pack 1978!!

I hope you are all ready for Spring Break. Enjoy your well deserved time off. When we return, we will be ready to create more exciting memories….

Get Ready!! I look forward to seeing EVERYONE at our next Pack Meeting on Monday, March 26 inside of FUMC’s Schreiber Hall. We will begin promptly at 6:45pm. At this Pack Meeting, we will be in for a very SWE-E-E-E-ET time as we will have our Annual Parent-n-Scout baking benefit. Each scout is requested to bring a homemade baked cake, decorated in Cub Scout Spirit. Parents…. I am encouraging you to bake with your scouts and allow their imaginations come to life.

This year, each scout will vote for the cakes decorated with the most Scout Spirit, using quarters as voting ballots. Scouts, please bring at least one roll of quarters with you and be ready to vote. The scout who receives the most ballots will be awarded the prestigious title of “THE CAKE BOSS”! But wait, there’s more!!! The top 10 cakes having the most votes will have an opportunity to S-M-A-S-H a slice of cake on the face of their favorite Cub Scout leader. Who will it be? Mr. Emes, Mr. Colunga, or……??? Once the voting and the cake smashing is over, we will round out the fun by eating these amazing pastries together.

I can’t wait to see your amazing cakes!

Scouting for Food Success!

Hi Pack 1978!!

What a phenomenal job you all did today! Regardless of the cold and rain, we delivered 705 food items to Good Samaritan, weighing in at 623 pounds!! That goes to show that we can always do our best, no matter what. I can't express how much this helps our local community. Be very proud of yourselves scouts and parents.

Gratefully yours,

Mario Mojica

Scouting for Food

Hi Pack 1978!

We are up for another action packed weekend… full of scouting adventures. After our Pinewood Derby on Saturday morning, we will take part in one of the largest, single food drives in the country. We will join our council and district in our yearly Scouting For Food event. This is an amazing opportunity to help our local food pantry, the Good Samaritan, in filling their shelves now that the holidays are behind us. Neighborhood pickup maps and bags will be distributed by the morning of the Pinewood Derby so that each den can pickup and deliver together. All drop-offs are needed at the Good Samaritan by 2:00pm on Saturday.

Here are the guidelines from our District:

·   Wear your Scout uniform (Class A).

·   Invite your parents, brothers and sisters to help.  Many hands lighten the load!

·   Work in teams.  Remind Scouts _ SAFETY FIRST!  No Scout should ever be alone.

·   Tell Scouts NOT TO ENTER ANY HOME.

·   Recruit as much adult help as possible.  An adult should be assigned to each team of boys (especially Cut Scouts and younger Boy Scouts). More food is almost always collected by knocking on doors.  Bags have dates and times so please do not use last year’s bags, if you are going to pre-distribute them.

·   You do not have to put bags out if you plan on going door-to-door on the 18th.

·   On February 18th, FOOD COLLECTIONS CAN BE IMPROVED BY KNOCKING ON DOORS WHERE BAGS ARE NOT LEFT OUT!  Some people plan on donating and simply forget to set their food bag out.  If they say they are not donating, be polite, say thank you, wish them a nice day, and leave.

·   Please count all food items before bringing them to the drop off center.  Each can, each box, each envelope (such as gravy or drink mixes, etc.) counts as one food item.  You will be advised if your drop off location wants the items sorted.

·   Please arrange to deliver all food items to your drop off center NO LATER than 2:00 p.m. on February 18th.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I would like to wish our Scouting family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Our Pack has once more created many memories over this wonderful year of 2011. We have much to reflect on and cherish with our families and young scouts. Over the last half of this year, we have:

·   proudly welcomed home hundreds of loyal Troops at DFW airport through our Welcome Home the Troops service project

·   wished a happy Labor Day to our fellow Garland citizens in the downtown Labor Day Parade

·   said farewell to 9 amazing scouts and 10 dedicated leaders as we watched them crossover into Boy Scouts at our Arrow of Light ceremony

·   welcomed almost 30 new families to our Pack since the Fall recruitment drive

·   sold over $22,218 in popcorn to help our Scouting movement

·   enjoyed an action-packed family Fall campout at Eisenhower State Park

·   camped with Boy Scouts troops at Webelos Woods

·   donated nearly 1,000 boxes of Mac ‘n Cheese to the Good Samaritans of Garland to help our friends in the local community

·   presented a wonderful Christmas tree full of thoughtfully crafted Scout ornaments to our community elders at Winters Park Nursing Home

But wait!!! The best is yet to come. Get ready for a rockin’ time as we prepare for our:

· Rank Advancement – 1/23

·   Blue and Gold Banquet – 2/11

·   Pinewood Derby race – 2/19

·   Scouting for Food – 2/19

·   Pack Spring Campout – April

I would like to thank each and every one of you for allowing my family and I to be a part of your family this scouting year. I look forward to an amazing and adventurous 2012!

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Happy Thanksgiving Day Pack 1978!

My  hope for this very special day, is that you all have a safe and memorable time with your families. May your tables overflow with meals prepared from the heart. May your afternoon savor in sweet delights. May your living rooms flood with fellowship. For throughout the day, we all have many reasons to stop and give THANKS.

As you celebrate today, I ask that you also keep others in your thoughts. Those that, through this past year, may have lost more than most can bear. Those that simply need a warm meal and a handshake. In the spirit of Scouting, I look forward to seeing the generosity of our Pack shine through our upcoming Mac ‘N Cheese food drive.  I am asking for every scout to donate 20 boxes of Mac ‘N Cheese at our December 5th Pack Meeting. We will take the donation to Good Samaritans so that they have more to distribute to our fellow citizens of Garland, and beyond. Can you imagine the impact that we can make on our community?!

Also, Tricia and I would like to start a new Pack 1978 tradition. We will be donating a Christmas Tree to a local Garland location on behalf of Pack 1978. However, we will need our Scouts to fill this tree with ornaments. So please bring a handmade craft to hang on this tree. You do not have to buy anything at the store. Simply create a Token of Joy, along with your Scout’s name, and bring it to our December 5th Pack Meeting. Our plan is deliver a Pack 1978 Christmas Tree to a local Retirement or Outreach center. I will let you all know the location within the next week.

Blessings to you all,

Mario Mojica, Cubmaster

Fall Campout - Scouting at it's best!

I hope everyone had a fantastic time at our Fall Family Campout, just as my family and I did! We had an amazing time hiking, throwing pies, earning our Bobcat patch, becoming junior Rangers, whittling, fishing, EATING, and so much more. I am so grateful to all of the leaders and parent volunteers for your hard work in making this a memorable weekend for all of us. Neither the 18-wheeler nor the rain could stop us from having fun. This is scouting at it's best.... Making lasting memories!

"Popcorn Rewards" Kickball Game

We had a kickin' great time yesterday at our Scout vs. Leader Kickball Game. I am happy to report that our scouts took the victory scoring 25 runs to 2 over the adults. What a great game! I am very proud of all of our hard working scouts during this popcorn season!

"Good Turn" Service Project

We had an AMAZING time today at Advantage Storage! Mr. T-Tom and Mrs. Janette were most welcoming and a joy to spend time with. This month the Flaming Stickman, Duct Tape, and Cottonmouth Patrols showed their gratitude by tidying up the facilities, and eating a few donuts along the way. Our Pack is very grateful for the generosity of Mr. T-Tom and Mrs. Janette. Way to go scouts!! Thank you to the parents who also rolled up their sleeves today.

    Attention Webelos

    Pack 1978,

Centennial Camporee is almost here!!  After talking with a lot of people at Circle 10 on Friday this is our game plan.  Kevin Saye and I will be taking a trailer down on Friday morning with all the Scouts gear.  I suggest every Scout that is going to bring me their tent and sleeping bag on Thursday.  We will be setting all tents up for the Scouts.  The official check in location is Camp Wisdom.  The shuttles will begin at 5:00pm to Dallas Executive Airport.  The closer to 4:30 to 5:00 that your Scout can arrive at Camp Wisdom the less time waiting in lines to get on a bus.  Your Scout must be able to carry his gear he brings from the bus all the way to the site by himself.  We will be charging everyone $5.00 for food for the weekend.  You can pay that on Thursday when you drop off their gear.  There will be lots of souvenirs and food for sale at the Camporee.  The registration fee included a t-shirt so I would not give your Scout any more than $20.00.

    Things to bring for sure:

Water Bottle     Head Light     Tripod Stoll

    Poncho     Warm Clothing    Pack T-shirt

Remember to pack as light as you can.  He will have to carry his own gear.

    Thanks

    Stevan Sanderson

I received a call from 2 scout that were so excited to tell me that they are both over $600.00 and have a pie with my name on it.--Thanks Mark and John McKelvey

    Welcome Home the Troops

What a great time we had this morning at DFW.  Thanks to all the scouts that came out in the rain to say "Thank You" to the men and woman that keep us safe. Great Job Pack 1978!  Then we went to Cowboy Stadium for a tour and lots of pictures.

    First Week

    Go Green!!

What a great start for us.  We had Den 6 average $606.87 per scout and the Duct Tape Patrol average $489.63 per scout. Great Job!   19 scouts already earned a spot in our Kickball game.  8 scouts have earned pies to thrown at Hula Girl aka Mr. Barron and a marshmallow crossbow shooter.  Go to the Fundraiser page for a List of scouts and top sellers.  We sold $17,696.99 and averaging $210.68 our first week selling.  We need to have another week like that to get to our first goal of $450.00 and finally to $650.00.  There is already $2247.27 earned to go into den accounts.  Den 6 won the Pizza party this week.

    T-shirts, Campout & more!

    T-SHIRTS
You can find the order form for T-shirts on the Uniform page. We must have your order at Pack meeting so we will have them at Campout.

    CAMPOUT
Campout must be paid for at Pack meeting.  If there is anyone that needs a tent just let us know.  I will have our Webelos set up and take down for all our first time campers without tents.

    PACK MEETING
Pack meetings is Monday Sept 20 at Walnut Glen Academy at 6:45 to 8:15.  It is very important everyone gets their at least 5 minutes early so we can start on time.

    POPCORN
This is going to be a great weekend for selling. Let's see if we can hit our Pack Meeting goal of $450 each and everyone will receive a Pizza Party. That will leave us only $200 left of our goal of $650. We alreday have over $300 in online sales. Great start for online sales. I also have heard of a scout over $1200. Great start! Pack record $3004 set last year by JD Barron.

We'd like to show our gratitude to the Sanderson's. It's not until we began to volunteer that we understood first hand how many hours it takes to help run this pack. Then we thought about the Sanderson’s and how much time and effort they put in for all of the pack families to enjoy the Cub Scout experience and help our sons grow. Having said that, we'd like to say a big THANK YOU to Stevan and Sharla. The endless service you provide for our pack is invaluable. Together you have inspired us to want to be of good service to the pack as well. May God bless your family and keep you leading the Pack for as long as He can. Keep up the great work Sanderson’s! You ROCK!
