Fall Wrap-Up

Copa/Questra

I wanted to let everyone know how much I appreciate all the hard work both teams put into this season. All the girls really worked hard and responded very well to the training. We worked a lot on technical skills (individual skill with the ball) for most of the season. The last several weeks we changed it up to more tactical work (positioning and the way we relate to each other as we move up and down the field). There is a method to this madness that I will explain more about in just a little bit.

A huge thanks to all the parents for your support and getting your daughters to training, games, and tournaments. The Lexington Tournament was a huge success for both teams because of you!

Questra already knows and has acknowledged this, so for Copa, Rhianydd's family is moving to Arkansas next month. Rhia and her family will be missed for sure by all of us. I'm sure she will land on a good soccer team in Arkansas and be very successful there. Most of you don't know this, but Rhia's older brother and my son, Connor are the same age and were in Warren County United together. Ria's dad, Anthony coached in the same system I was in and is a wonderful coach. The Hylton's are a great soccer family so please join me in wishing them success in the future.

Before you hear this from someone else, I was selected to be an ODP Coach (Olympic Development Program) for the 2010-2011 season. I will be working with the U12 Boys and U15 Girls in the Ohio South District. This will not impact my status with Questra, Copa, or Cincinnati United. Many directors of coaching and trainers become involved with this program. It gives us a lot of insight into how to better our own players and, just as important, we hear what the country is doing at the national level. Having knowledge of what US Soccer and colleges will be looking for in a player is valuable information.

About the technical vs tactical training I talked about earlier...Last night we had our first ODP coaches meeting and some of the information that was passed down was very pleasing to hear. The direction that the United States National Teams (from the US World CUP Team on down) want to see from our U12 players down to our U8 players is to place a heavy emphasis on technical ability. IOW, we already have and have been practicing that same philosophy this season with Questra and Copa!! Building the technical player at 6v6 and 8v8 so that when they hit 11v11 we then add a heavy dose of tactical - it all comes into place perfectly. It's what Europe has been doing all along and the U.S. needs to do that so we can compete at the World CUP level. The US will get there, it just takes time.

Another huge statement last night was when they told us coaches that if we have a .500 record at the U12 level and below then we are doing the right thing. Meaning that we are playing at the correct level and that our emphasis is on player development as opposed to just winning. We certainly reached that level with Questra in the fourth division, but really speaks to Copa that we need to move up from seventh to sixth.

Thanks and looking forward to going inside for winter soccer!

Coach Jon

Weekly Update October 25th

Copa,

Recap: After we “won” the second half of the first game, we went on to win the next two games to finish the tournament strong. I’m very proud of our girls and the fact that they never gave up. Yes, that Thunder team went on to win the rest of their games and the finals (What a shock). They only gave up two goals in the whole tournament and we lost to them 5-2 so guess which team was the only one to score on them….and out play them for a half?!?! It really shows how crucial it is for these tournaments to work hard when it comes to bracketing teams. I feel very cheated by this and know without a doubt that this tournament would have been ours. But, there will be other chances…and soon.

This week (last two days of the Fall Season)

Monday: Parents vs Players game. We will start at little later to help parents get there too. Warm-up at 5:30. Game time 5:45. We will go about 30 mins (unless the parents need a few more minutes to get another goal for the win).

Tuesday: Last Game and for second place of our division. Not telling the girls, but win or tie is what we need.

Game Time: 5:45

Arrival Time: 5:15

Location:Posey Hartman Complex

Field Letter S

Uniform: Black (bring white)

I know the girls always look forward to playing against the parents so have fun tonight. Parents may want to take some pain meds as preventative for Tuesday morning problems J

Quick Look Ahead

Copa,

FYI….

Our 10/31 game was rescheduled for 10/26 at 5:45pm at Posey Hartman so Monday will be our last training session of the fall season.

I would like to have a Parents/Coaches vs Players game on Monday.

Since Questra is done they will not be there at 6:15 so I would like to start this Monday at 5:30. Parents and players will warm-up together until 5:45 and then we will scrimmage for about 30 mins or so. (We may end sooner if we are beating them J)

So bring your work-out clothes and be ready to run or at least pretend to run.

About our last game on Tuesday…

This game is for second place, a trophy, and an automatic pass to move up to the 6th division! Technically we can tie and still get that, but I would rather have the kids think that we need to win it. If we lose, we still “tie for second”, but since the first tie breaker is head-to-head they would actually claim second place. No trophy, no automatic move, but I would be able to petition for the 6th division and have a decent chance to get it. Hopefully that all makes sense.

Last thing…if you noticed we are getting some looks by CUP coaches and our Directors of Coaching. I keep in continuous contact with them and I always talk Copa (and Questra) up. The word on the street is how well we play the game. The wins and losses mean less to them then it does us. They watch for player development and our two teams are high on the list in their minds. We showed very well in the second half of the first game and all the second game. The compliments that I receive about both teams are numerous. I’m really proud of the girls and their progress this season.

See you in the morning and lets get another win!

Coach Jon

Just A Note:

Copa,

Was thinking about our season and wanted to put some thoughts out there…

Regardless of what happens in our last two league games (or the tournaments) I’m very pleased with how this team progressed. Basically we combined a few girls from various teams and a few made the jump from SAY soccer to select. Truly, a brand new team and starting from scratch. We are 5-0 in league play with a big game this Sunday against a team that is 4-0. Win, lose, or tie on Sunday I have and will continue to talk proudly of this team (at least to those who aren’t tired of hearing it…not many of those left!).

All the girls have worked hard at training and it has shown on the field. Most of all, I like how the girls pull for each other as a team and want each other to be successful. Everyone on the team is playing a significant role and has contributed to our wins. Here’s a great example of how a player contributes and doesn’t even realize it. Zoe Bishop (former Copa, now on Questra) played with us in our first tournament this season. Afterwards, I thanked her and she said, “But Coach Jon, I didn’t score for you and we didn’t make it to the championship. I let you guys down”. I told her that just by her being out there and being a threat to the other team, performing at her position by playing hard and making good decisions, she helped us.

For this Sunday’s game: Avoid sleepovers on Saturday night, get plenty of rest and eat well (no fried foods and stay away from grease on Sunday morning, eat some fruit between breakfast and game time). Most importantly, we are getting some warmer weather this weekend. Drink a lot of water on Saturday so that you are hydrated on Sunday. Waiting until close to game time will not be enough.

Have a great weekend and I will see you on Sunday!

Coach Jon

Weekly Update October 11th

Copa,

First, there must be something going on in the air today. We lost, Questra lost, my son’s team lost two of four games in St Louis and the Bengals, well, not even gonna go there! Our only hope is for the Reds to pick us all up. GO REDS!!!!

Recap:

Tuesday we had a big win over the CU Lakota side. That team beat us last season 6-2 so it was sweet to have it back.

Today’s game…we were way off our game in the first half. We were slow to the ball and did not pressure the other team like we had been doing all season. Not taking away from the other team, they are very good, but so are we. Their strength and team speed put us at a disadvantage primarily because we backed off of them. I think we gave them too much respect in the first half.

At half time I asked the girls for two things. 1) Play aggressive so the other team didn’t have time to get their heads up to find the open player and 2) our outside mids needed to get back on defense to help cover the wide players. I felt for the most part we accomplished those two objectives and we ended up with a 3-3 tie in the second half.

This week:

Monday Training…5:00-6:15

Wednesday Training…5:00 – 6:15

Weekend:

Lexington Tournament (I will send out a separate email with tourney info)

Should be a great time for all. Our sister team, Questra will be there and if Copa and Questra can win their respective divisions, we will play each other in the finals. That would be too much fun!

I will ask a parent from each team to coordinate a CU dinner out somewhere for both teams/parents. Obviously not mandatory, but hopefully most of us will be able to attend.

Coaching Point ”Playing Out of State Tournaments”

My approach to playing out of state tournaments is simple.

1)  Have fun!

2)  We have players from various school districts and this will give the girls a chance to bond away from the soccer field-creating lasting friendships and memories. My 17 and 18 year old daughters still have friends from when they played soccer at 8 and 9 years old.

3)  Have fun!

4)  It’s a chance to play teams that we would typically never see.

5)  Have fun!

6)  A chance for the parents to mingle and become friends as well. Lisa and I still have friends from parents of teams that our older daughters played on.

As always, never hesitate to ask me anything. I am always willing to talk soccer.

Coach Jon
