Back Home
Now that we are back home in our comfortable homes in Mississippi, we reflect on our experience. God had something special for us this past week and he called for our church to make a stronger commitment. What a wonderful opportunity for families to serve together. We had four families represented this week. These four families led by mothers and fathers who are witnessing in the primary mission field, the family. These parents found it important that they serve the Lord together and they are instilling in these children how important it is to serve. And what we learned is that we have many opportunities to be the light of Christ. In just one week, this team delivered food to 32 needy families, prayed with these families, loved these families. This team worked on a parsonage in a community suffering from drugs and poverty without a church presence. Now because of their efforts this community will have a light to shine in its darkness. We will never know how this community will be impacted by the efforts of a few families. This team entered this same community and engaged the children. They played soccer in the plaza. They went into the school to build a relationship there. This team went into another community to spread the Good News through a bible school. The entire community showed up. This team touched a small school in the outskirts of town. This school is a small school made of students in difficult home situations many orphaned and abused. It is often overlooked by the state and struggles to provide an education for these children. This team went in and built a relationship and shared to Gospel with these children. The team gave of themselves and answered the call. They ministered to their families by serving others together. It was great to see everyone experiencing Christ is different ways and doing it as a family. There is no greater experience we can give our kids than the experience of being the light of Christ. These four families reached so many. Who says we cant make a difference.
Our week
It has been a great week. We have been pushed out of our comfort zone. We all have been emotionally rattled in our own unique way. This team has grown and has done great things. I do not think this team realizes the miracles they have been a part of and what a blessing they have been to these communities. They came into this weekend looking for an opportunity to serve with their families and what they learned that once the comfortable routine was stripped away they found Jesus there waiting on them. Calling to them from the shore. "Have you caught anything?....Cast your nets on the other side." This team did just that. They heard the call of Christ and they touched so many lives. I can safely say that the team reached five to six hundred people this week. They spread the Gospel in three communities and two schools. They went into 32 homes to let strangers know that Jesus loves them. He loves them so much that he sent this team to their home personally to pray for them and love them. These acts were not easy. The were hard both physically and mentally, but this team answer the call without hesitation or complaints and with such a servant heart. Six hundred families....tell me that was not a miraculous catch of fish...!
Day 7 Thursday
What a unique opportunity. Rice and Beans has made some in roads with a small school on the outskirts of San Isidro. Being a small school (45 students) They usually get passed over when it comes to government support and have many needs. This community itself is in great need. The majority of these kids are from homes with no mother or father and have a rough home life. I think we are going to adopt this school through the Rice and Beans Ministry. They are currently housing their kindergarten in the kitchen. It would be nice to build a new building to give these children a better classroom environment. We were able to hold a bible school there today and spend a lot of time with the children. We may have been the only opportunity these kids have ever had to hear the gospel. Great day being the light!
Day 6 2010
We had our big bible school Wednesday. We were in a community on the outskirts of town. The turn out was incredible. Well over 100 children and parents. We came to learn that 3/4 of those were unchurched. I could not have been prouder of our group. i know for a fact that His first miracle was assembling this team. The ladies were a joy to see take charge of the situation with very little time to plan and i believe it was the most successful bible school to date here. We had some things happen this bible school that hasn't happened before. First, we had a large contingency of male teenagers come and stay the entire time. This is the hardest group to reach. For this we can thank John Arledge. He alone entertained two dozen or so male youth playing soccer and other games. Unfortunantly John will not know how much that act of love and kindness affected these adolescents. He did exactly what God brought him down here for...to plant the seed. I know now that these youth will always remember when someone took the time to love them and show by example how much they love their Lord. Secondly, we handed out nearly 100 bibles. I can not wait to see how this one day is going to impact this community.
But I really must say that the miracle for the day has been how every member of this team has grown. I have learned so much from each one. It is a joy to see this team work and love. This team has experienced Jesus Christ in many different ways. But most importantly (and i dont think they realize this) they have been such a vivid representation of Christ in the world. Their light is bright. They are touching so many people right now. They are in the "zone". I just feel privledged to be with them as they serve.
Day Five
What an opportunity for the mothers and daughters on our team. They got the opportunity to minister to a mother who had just lost her pregnancy. We were at this home on Monday and she was ill in bed. We visited and prayed with her for over 30 minutes. We found out this morning that she had lost the baby and their food situation was worse. The ladies and daughters in our group went to the store and bought food to take back to the home. They were able to spend quality with this family in a very low time in their lives. God sent us half way around the globe to help this family. The mothers in our group were able to touch this family in a special way. Mothers ministering to mothers.
Day Four 2010
We had a God moment at a home in San Isidro. An ill elderly woman had been praying for help and then we showed up. we prayed for her for at least 30 minutes. She saw Angels with us. What a testament to our being the hands and feet of Jesus. We are put on this earth for a reason. God has made us all very special and different. He uses us all in
very different ways. Today he call this very special team to love a complete stranger who had been asking for help. He brought us this far and used us to show his sheep that they are loved. The miracles are becoming clearer each day. For that we can be truly thankful.
Day Four 2010
A full day of construction and Rice and Beans. Everyone has found a special place. Spence and John and the boys have been playing football (soccer) with all the local kids. What a wonderful chance for the dads to use all those years of coaching soccer. They really enjoyed being with the kids and the kids really enjoyed the "loco gringos (crazy Americans)
Day Three 2010
What a great day...The first have the day was spent working on the parsonage. And man can this team work. I am really looking forward to the rest of the week with this group. They worked their tails off all morning and finished the morning with an impromptu football (soccer to us) game in the park down the street. After lunch, half the team went out delivering rice and beans to several needy families on the outskirts of town. It was a great experience. The rest of the day we spent building the relationships with the local children. Please pray for our group, i think the Lord has something special planned. They are an extraordinary group.
We made it
We finally made it to San Isidro. It was a little slower than usual because of thick cloud bank at the top of the mountains. Only one bag got lost and we just found out that it has been found and they are delivering it today. Everybody is settled and ready for the week. Today we are going to worship in the community where we will be working this week. This afternoon we are going back to the Santa Rosa Community to help them celebrate the one year anniversary of the completion of their new sanctuary that helped finish last year. It looks like it is going to be a good day.

Acts 9
Saul’s Conversion
1Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven fl ashed around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5”Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6”Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 7The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 10In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. 11The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13”Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” 15But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” 17Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be fi lled with the Holy Spirit.” 18Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

Luke 24
On the Road to Emmaus
13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16but they were kept from recognizing him. 17He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19”What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucifi ed him; 21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23but didn’t fi nd his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Did not the Christ[b] have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” 33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
Song
Perfect song, Ginger! I know I have definitely gotten "caught up" in the preparations of the trip and probably missed many opportunities to prepare myself for just what God has in store for not only me, but everyone we will be serving....thank you so much for sharing this with us. Can't wait to serve with you and your precious family!

John 10
The Shepherd and His Flock
1”I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. 3The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6Jesus used this fi gure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them. 7Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. 11”I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the fl ock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14”I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Matthew 19
The Rich Young Man
16Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 17”Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.” 18”Which ones?” the man inquired. Jesus replied, “ ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,’[d] and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[e]”
20”All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 21Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” 26Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” 28Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother[f] or children or fi elds for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30But many who are fi rst will be last, and many who are last will be first.
Follow You by Leeland

I have been very busy in preparation for the mission trip. I realized yesterday that I haven't given much time to preparing my heart. I was listening to music last night and found this song. It is a perfect theme song for our mission trip!
Monday July 19 - 5 days and counting.
Today's devotional focuses on what we are leaving behind.
Matthew 4
18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19”Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” 20At once they left their nets and followed him. 21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Matthew 10
26”So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny[d]? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1”Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God[a]; trust also in me. 2In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going.”
"Follow Me"
The theme for our trip is “Follow me…”
All throughout the Bible Jesus asks many different people to “Follow me.” That does not necessarily mean to only follow in his footsteps, but in many occasions it means to do as he has directed us. Many times he asks us to go “On Ahead.” But as we will learn throughout
our trip and through our devotionals he wants us to go on ahead because he has prepared a place for us. It is almost like a surprise party. He has prepared a place for us to go and He can hardly keep it a secret. He has been preparing this place for a long time for us. He has called each of us by name and will move each of us in different ways. Each of us will have a different
experience and react in our own special way. I ask everyone to have an expectant heart. As we will learn through our devotionals, we need to have a child’s heart. Try to remember back when you were five years old. That will be harder for some of us, but try to remember how excited you used to get before a birthday party or a family vacation. Consider this trip to Costa Rica His little family trip and throw in a surprise party on top of that…I can’t wait!
One month and counting
Please pray for our team as we prepare to make our next trip to Costa Rica July 24-31, 2010.
Back in the states
We are back in the states but have left a piece of our soul in Costa Rica. We have come back to work, clients, recruiting, staff meetings, Wednesday night children's worship planning, construction, football practice, sick loved ones and some of us had to go back out on tour. Whatever it is that we have returned to has not changed, but i believe our attitude about it has. We had an opportunity to get to know one another and to experience miracles together. Some miracles happened in our presence and some will happen because of our presence. All I know is that we felt privileged to be called to play a part in His miracles. I feel we have learned that it does not matter how old we are, how long we have been a christian or about preconceived ideas about what role we are to play in God's kingdom. It is that He called this group from many different places along the christian path and used each one as His hands and feet for His work in His kingdom.
God Bless.
Day 6: Reflecting
Last night was a moving experience. The Church had a send off service for us and it was very special. There wasn't a dry eye in the church. We have only been here 6 days. Only four of which were spent in this community. Mission Trips are all about going forth and spreading the Good News and helping the needy. This was different. Relating to the scripture focus, we were brought here to receive the Good News. God made his plan a reality by getting us here.
The language barrier served as a conduit instead of a barrier. We were able to communicate soul to soul. God sent us here to be loved. He pulled us out of our routine and brought us here to tell us how much we are loved through these special people. Our mission was to come here and help with their mission work in their community, but what happened was we received the blessing by their witness. What happened was they helped us with our mission heart. They taught us what Jesus means when he said "love one another as I have loved you."
We where wrapped in our routines just like the disciples had become. They decided to go fishing while they waiting on the lord. Jesus called us over to the shore here and appeared to us through the love of this small Costa Rican community.
Now we set forth on a long journey home. We miss our families greatly, but it will be bittersweet, because we know that we will miss this community greatly as well.
God bless.
Chuck's comments during the closing worship service in Santa Rosa.Costa Rica:
Thank you for the wonderful welcome that you have given us. We have been blessed to be here with you. Thank you for putting up with our very bad attempts to speak Spanish. Thank you for allowing us to participate with you in caring for others, and sharing the message of Jesus Christ. It has been wonderful that our children have played together. The adults have also played together. We have worked together, laughed together and served together.
Building a place of worship together has been great; however, the relationships are more important than the building. The relationships are eternal while the building is not.. Revelation 7:9-11 states that John saw people from every tribe and language worshiping together and proclaiming, “Salvation comes from God who sits on the thrown and from the Lamb.” We hope to return to worship with you here, but even if we do not we look forward to worshiping with you in heaven. As followers of Jesus we will be brothers and sisters forever.
Acts 2:44-46, reminds us that after the Holy Spirit came upon the community of faith all the believers met together in one place, shared their possessions, gave to those in need, worshiped together, as well as met in homes sharing food with joy and generosity. This past week we have been able to participate with you in all of these things. This is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit. Sharing these experiences together has truly strengthened our personal faith. However, Acts 1:8 informs us that the gift of the Holy Spirit has a purpose and that purpose is to be a witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Through this experiences the Holy Spirit has truly been working among us, and we will be better witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our pray is that you will be strengthened in your witness to Costa Rica as well. May God bless you.
Day 5
For more information about the Rice and Beans Ministry goto www.riceandbeansministries.com
Day5
Looking forward to worship this morning and then heading into the rain forest for some zip lining through the canopy.
Day 4
The team went door to door in a neighborhood inviting children to come down to a vacant lot where we set up a bible school. Huge success. we had over 100 people. All the parents came down with their children. It was a wonderful time to reach the unchurched. After the morning bible school, we headed out into the city to hand out rice and bean food packages and prayed for the recipients. We traveled into a neighborhood that was built in the city dump. The only shelter these people could afford was housing built in the city dump that the government gave them. A lot of "God" things happened today. It was a blessing to see Jesus tend to his sheep!
Day 3
Costa Rica Mission Trip Day 3: Last night we went to a service at the local church we are working. It was 2 hours long and all in Spanish. It was amazing to see the Holy Spirit work despite the language barrier. The locals have accepted and loved us in such a unique way, it is going to be hard to see who is going to receive the bigger blessing, them or the team. Today we worked more on the rest rooms pouring concrete and digging trenches. Played with the children most of the day. At the end of the day our children did not want to go. It is wonderful to see them learn from a different culture how to have the best time without TV"s or video games. Made several trips into the mountains to deliver rice and beans. We prayed for the families and recieved our own blessings. The team really has bonded and enjoyed themselves stay tuned.
Day 2
Costa Rica Mission Trip day 2: We are going to head out into the local village to work on a sanctuary. this afternoon we will be handing out rice and beans to the locals. Great group on this trip, cant wait to see the blessings. Started construction on rest rooms outside sanctuary. All the children from the surrounding are comming down to play and help.
stay tuned.
