Dallas Club wins 2013 Bass on The Fly Fishing Tournament

The 2013 World Championship Bass on The Fly Fishing Tournament was held Saturday, May 11th, at Lake Fork Marina near Alba, TX.  This tournament is exclusively for fly fishing and all the equipment must be made for fly fishing.  It is one of only two such tournament in the world.  Forty-one participants from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas & Colorado enjoyed the nice weather and the morning topwater bite before the sun got bright and an unusual North wind picked up.

By 2:00 pm all the teams had checked in and the results were tallied in this catch-photo-release tournament.  Each team could check-in up to five largemouth bass which had to be photographed laying on a measuring board showing the length of the fish and a unique identification tag.  All fish were then released immediately back into the lake.  Since there is a 16”-24” “slot” on Lake Fork, this allowed contestants to photo and release even their slot fish unlike conventional tournaments where only the bass below 16” and over 24” can be weighed in.  The total length of the five fish determined the winner and the big fish of the boater division and the non-boater(kayak) division.

Although there were some teams with no fish to check in, there were some good photo stringers also brought in.  In the boater division, first place was won by Carey Thorn with a five fish total length of 100.5” which paid $600!   Defending champions, Benson & B.C. Fowler, claimed second place with 93.5” and received $325, Robert & Mary Ann Cummings took third with 81” and earned $225, and brothers Hal & Mike Maris received $110 for fourth with 48”.  Big fish was 22.5” caught by Carey Thorn which paid $120 and second was 22” caught by B.C. Fowler for $55.

There were six fishermen in the Non-boater (Kayak) division.  Greg Stine took first place with 34” earning $145 and Tim Kapp was second with 17” worth $70.  Greg and Tim tied for the longest fish with 17”.  The wind was a little rough for the kayakers to handle.

Rex White won the big blue gill side pot with a 9” blue gill and Tim Kapp claimed second with one 8.5”.  Tim also won the new Sage Largemouth rod in a drawing for those who registered by May 1st.

The Dallas Fly Fishers Club barely retained the Club trophy as the North Louisiana Fly Fishers mounted a strong challenge that came up just a few inches short.

Once again, the sponsors who donated products and gift certificates made the tournament fun for everyone.  All participants received a newly introduced Gypsy Jack bass lure made for fly fishing, a Skeeter or Ranger tee shirt, a hat from TFO or Skeeter, a Peoples Communications water-proof phone protector, and Cabela’s promotional items.  Other sponsors were TFO rods, Bass Pro Shops, Oakley sunglasses, Sage, Simms, Redington, Buffs, Rio Lines, Mariner Sails, and Tailwaters Fly Fishing store.  Every participant received a drawing prize after the winners received their checks due to the generosity of our sponsors.

Proceeds of the tournament benefit the Federation of Fly Fishermen and East African Christian Ministries.  Plans are underway to make the 5th tournament in 2014 even bigger and better than ever.  The date for the 2014 tournament will be announced later in the Summer.  For more information about participating in the tournament or becoming a  sponsor check the website, www.bassonthefly.org.

CFR Fly Boxes

To all the tyers, CFR Retreat is in November, but I would like to start to put the fly boxes together a lot sooner than I did last year.  So the deal is I need people to donate 14 identical flies for the ladies' fly boxes, the more I get from the club, the better the boxes will be.  I will be getting the boxes again, hopefully from J Stockard, they donated them last year.  We only had a few member donate last year and I had to get the rest from Fly Tying Forum.com.  I would prefer not to have to go that route this year being that we have so many tyers in the club.  What I would like to get are:
Wooly buggers size 6-12 (black, brown, olive)
Poppers size 4-12 yellow, white, char.
Foam hoppers size 6-12 yellow
Llano Bugs size 4-10 yellow
Briminators size 8-10 Black
Foam Spiders 6-12
Muddlers size 6-10
Mickey Finns 6-10
Clouser Crayfish 4-8

These are the recommended flies for the Paluxy River as per our speaker a few months ago.

When finished with the flies please contact me or bring them to the monthly meeting and leave them with myself or Margret at the door and let us know who they're from and what they are for.

Thank you all in advance for helping out with this great cause.
Looking forward to seeing some great flies.

Q & A--Have a question; know an answer, post here

Hello All, I am new to local fly fishing, and sadly, don't know the first thing about anything besides dry flies and mountain streams. If there is anyone who would be interested in showing my the ropes, I would be eternally grateful, and be glad to take you to dinner...I live just north of white rock lake in Merriman Park. Thanks, Thomas (tom_mccause-AT-yahoo-DOT-com
I am also wanting to learn how to flyfish and would appreciate some contacts to help me get started. dwdunlap@sbcglobal.net
Question about The Lower Mountain Fork River
Hi All,
I moved to the Dallas area several months ago and I am hungry to catch some trout. I checked the map and it says the nearest trout river is the lower Mt. fork river in OK. I am wonderding if some people know this river and would like to take a trip with me. I will pay the gas n dinner. My email address is yonexfox AT hotmail dot com
I would like to rent a 4 piece 8wt. rod with salt reel for the second week in June. Is anything available? Tom Klaasen takef322@yahoo.com
Does anyone know the recipe for Charlie Ducote's Hummingbird fly, I need to know the hook he used to make them.
Silly question. I keep hearing about LouDans. Even though I have been to several meeting I am unsure who Lou or Dan is. Could someone bring a LouDan to the next meeting so I can take a look? Or better yet, sell one?
I live in Ohio and have the option to move to Dallas but fly fishing is my life. Steelhead, bows and kings are my gig. What is trout are available and how abundant are they in the Dallas area?

Lake Fork fishing report 3-31-13 The bass are in spawning mode and are up shallow (1-5') around most of the lake. They are very catchable with a fly rod using streamers, clousers, leech/worm patterns worked slow.

The crappie are in 5' of water preparing to spawn. I am catching 10-15 nice ones in 2 hours within 100 yards of my boat house on Little Caney. Use clousers, brim type jigs, Loudans, wooley buggers and streamers. Let them go to the bottom and work in slowly. The bite is light but some of the fish are 2#.

I am available for guided trips this week if anyone is interested, then will be out of town for a week. I prefer 1/2 half day trips but can do full day also. Call for reasonable rates for 1 or 2 people. 903-850-7084, Ted.

Mussel Rescue
Freshwater mussels are finally getting some of the respect they deserve. Mussels clean the water in our rivers, remove pollutants, and help anchor the streambed in place during flood events. Mussels and some species of fish share a life cycle; both depend on having good quality habitat in order to survive. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department worked with the Texas Department of Transportation in a project on the San Saba River to study how best to protect mussels during bridge construction.
