Freshwater mussels are finally getting some of the respect they deserve. Mussels clean the water in our rivers, remove pollutants, and help anchor the streambed in place during flood events. Mussels and some species of fish share a life cycle; both depend on having good quality habitat in order to survive. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department worked with the Texas Department of Transportation in a project on the San Saba River to study how best to protect mussels during bridge construction. |

Well it's that time again, school is out and that means kids are looking for something to do. This summer many families are discovering they don't have to look far for fun and inexpensive ways to get kids out of the house and hooked on the outdoors.
These lakes are stocked with catfish in and around many of the biggest cities in Texas, and anglers under 17 don't need a license to fish. To find out more about where to go, what to catch or even how to fish, visit www.neighborhoodfishin.org |

When bald eagles built a nest in a tree right beside Highway 29 near Llano, drivers gawked and people came flocking to see them. As Texas Parks and Wildlife reports, it's rare to find bald eagles nesting this far west in Texas, but it shows how our national bird has made a comeback in recent decades.
The pair of bald eagles are still returning each year and stick around until June. For more information, visit http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us |

The Catos are working hard to fight invasive species, preserve water resources, and carry on a tradition of stewardship. The Buck Hollow Ranch is located in Uvalde and Real counties and the Stockard-Sirianni Ranch is located in Frio county. Both ranches present unique challenges and opportunities for conservation practices.
