St. Jude Children's Research Hospital owes it's establishment to a promise made years ago by then little-known struggling entertainer, Danny Thomas. He vowed "show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine."
That simple promise led Danny to found St. Jude, whihc opened in 1962. Today, St. Jude is the premier center in the United States for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other childhood catestrophic diseases.
Workign together under one roof, our physicians and scientists have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancer from less than 20% in 1962 to more than 70% today. The survival rate of the most common form of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, has risen from 4% in 1962 to 94% today.
At St. Jude, no family ever pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance - and those without insurance are never asked to pay.
