Welcome
Welcome to my website! Here you'll find all you need to know about Domestic Violence in America today. What is Domestic Violence? What are the warning signs? How can you get help? How can we make a change? Not only is this a website to help you recognize if you are a victim or not but this website is to encourage men everywhere to stand-up and get involved. Men can change the cycle of Domestic Violence against women and girls everywhere by showing that disrespecting women is wrong and will not be tolerated in our society. Women can speak out about violence against women and raise awareness but men may ignore it. Men need to come forward, speak out and target the audience that will initiate the change.....MEN.
Domestic Violence against women has been a problem in relationships for years but it was failed to be recognized in society as a social problem. In fact, Domestic violence wasn't seen as a problem at all. Back in the 1700's, it has been said that there was the "Rule of Thumb" which was an English law that allowed a man to beat his wife with a stick as long as it was no thicker than his thumb. This just shows that domestic violence dates way back. It didn't start to become a social problem until the 1870's,1910's and 1970's. During these three historical periods statistics were gathered and the problem was publicly recognized. After recognition explanations were proffered and policy reforms were introduced. This move to public recognition and reform was led by vigorous women's movement. Women have definitely said their piece and made change happen but it has not stopped the abuse completely. The evidence about domestic violence tells a common story, of a problem that is serious and widespread in most societies and of violence perpetrated by males against females. This is a great example to prove that men need to help as well. Men and women need to come together to raise awareness about domestic violence and promote the equality of men and women. This is the basis for encouraging change and stopping the violence!
There is an organization that has begun to achieve this exact goal and they are called Stand-Up Guys. Click the Stand-Up Guys tab to find out more and how you can get involved!
“My father used to always say, 'If you have to hit a woman, then you’re not a man.' That’s one of the things that always stuck with me.”
— Dwayne Milton
"I never understood why anybody thought that they needed to beat their partner. The way I was raised of course played a big role in that. If that’s learned behavior, that’s something that needs to be unlearned."
— Peter Alexander

Great site! I never understood how a man would want to abuse a woman for any reason at all. They don't deserve it.They should be treated with tender loving care and respect.

Re: Tell us your story!
Wow, Lindsey,
This is a really nice site! I think it is excellent how you combined real stories with real facts to help get the message across to the site visitors.
Also, it is great how you offer a "Call to Action" to "Call for advice or to get help", at the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and then listed their phone number!
People need to know what their next steps should be; and you've shown that you can get a meaningful/useful message together for community.
Awesome Job!

My story
My story is simple, I am a survivor of domestic violence and after 27 years of always looking back on my abuse and wishing I could help others, I have finally found a venue to really make a difference. I went to ABW to see how I could help and they directed me to a group called SAFER (Survivors Advocating for Effective Reform). I also work with VSLP (Volunteer Legal Services Project) on some pro-bono cases for women that are in the same situation that I was in during my abuse. I also work with Task Force on Courts to help rectify some of the injustices happening in the courtrooms. When I heard about Stand Up Guys, I was very impressed with their mission and felt I would be a good fit here as well. If any of the men that were in my circle of family and friends would have stood up during my abusive relationship, I would not have had to endure 3 years of emotional, mental and physical abuse. Raising awareness and teaching is where I feel the most good can come. Giving people tools to make better choices in their lives rather than resort to violence is the answer in my mind, so anything I can do to make a difference is my goal.
