Camino de Santiago - an adventure with Domino Ireland

Welcome. Here you'll find updates on my latest travel adventures, including pictures and videos from The Camino de Santiago, a 900km journey from France across Spain then on to the ocean.

My travel journal

Domino's Camino Summer 2011- July 6 to August 4

Start at the bottom of this and read...well...UP.

August 9 at 12:14am

The Way | A film by Emilio Estevez's Wall.."Been there, done that...LOVED..." on The Way UK Movie's Wall..Domino likes The Way UK Movie and The Way | A film by Emilio Estevez..Remove PostDomino Ireland

It was really cool for the first car to ride in for over a month to be the last car I had ridden in, my wife's Mini.

‎"The Way" opens in the theaters in the US October 7th. http://www.theway-themovie.com/#/Camino THE WAY | a film by Emilio Estevez  www.theway-themovie.com

Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son...

August 8 at 8:57pm

And now, I have returned home. Fittingly I got to watch The Way" starring Martin Sheen on the long flight back. I am glad I did not see it before the Camino. You ALL should see it. It will give you an idea of the adventure and you will see many of the actual places I was, except Martin is carrying the backpack. Now, off to Pooles.

August 4 at 11:41am

As of 3pm, i have walked to the end of the Earth. Done! I’m tired but fell truly alive. Time for seafood. It is socked in here n Fisterre. Camino complete!

August 4 at 11:20am

Just met a guy that went to my Elementary school in Jenks, OK. In very rural Spain.

August 3 at 1:42pm

ok, one day left, i reach the sea. I’m in Olveiroa. 30+k

August 2 at 11:57pm

I cannot describe the magnitude of feelings I had yesterday at the end of the Camino in Santiago. Of all the adventures, the journeys...I thought the Camino de Santiago would come in less than a favorite, compared to others but it is a profound adventure that I´d have to describe to you over a beer or 5. So, when I get back, you buy the beers, I´ll talk of that which is the Camino. Cheers

August 2 at 11:35pm

Well, leaving Santiago this AM was Bittersweet. The goal having been accomplished and yet having an additional go to walk all the way to the water still at hand. Lucky for me I got to walk with Viktor all day after we happened to meet up just out of town. The jokes and songs we sang along the way made the day go quick and fun.

August 2 at 1:58pm

Im in Negreira today. Two days until the edge of the Earth. Taking a siesta today 4sure.

August 2 at 10:14am

3 more days of 30’s.Tomorrow, i begin the Camino de Finesterra to hike to the end of the Earth, as the Romans once thought while they watched the sun disappear into the ocean...with hope it would rise again.

August 1- At 10am  I completed the Camino de Santiago in Spain arriving at the Cathedral. Wow!

July 31 at 5:26pm

Oh yes 20km left, of the Camino. The feeling is overwhelming.Yes, i am currently “snuck“ out of the Albergue after curfew, so what.

July 31 at 5:20pm

Waaaahoooo, in Melide just 50.5 to go! About to go eat Pulpo with a group of friends and rest my sore leg and tired feet after 32 today.

August 2 at 1:55pm Pulpo was great..though I did not eat a whole plate alone and had beer to save me.

August 2 at 1:55pm

after hearing the song "GREAT DAY TO BE ALIVE" I put a temporary tattoo on my arm today...they come in Cheetoes believe it or not. I have a snake and a butterfly.

July 27 at 1:48pm

Viña Serea in España es muy bueno

July 27 at 1:37pm

I am learning how to "stealth charge" my Ipod on the Camino. Maybe I could write a IPOD CHARGING ON THE CAMINO for DUMMIES

July 27 at 1:24pm

As much as I like biking and bike touring, it seems a bit unfair that they can check into an albergue before 5pm and take the place of a walking Pilgrim who has been on the trail for almost a month. Though someday I may be back to do another route on a bike....but at least I will already have a pilgrim hike under my belt.

July 27 at 1:10pm

I am finally transferring my 761 pics over to a memory card so I can start snapping shots again. I’m in Galicia, the Celtic part of Spain and it is beautiful as can be.

July 27 at 1:06pm

Since the Camino grant “Compestellas¨to anyone doing the last 100k, the last stretch is full of drunken Spanish HS and College students only out for 5 days. There are some great people too, dont get me wrong. I am just bitter after going long today on a hurt leg. My left leg is like toast, pulled a muscle in my anterior tibialis. It really sucks. But, it is not crippling...I go slower but I can still go all day long. “I’m as good once as I ever was” thanks Toby Keith.

July 27 at 1:05pm

I barely got into an Albergue after doing 33 today. I´d have been pissed to go all that way to find I was out a bed because of people that started two days ago or bicyclist who couldnt go an extra 10 or 20 k at 3pm. There are a ton of both. It is getting harder to find Pilgrims that have been on the trail since France.

July 27 at 7:34pm

OK, left leg is in some serious trouble...but I limp along. Would you rather hear about the suffering or the super old church I was in today that at one time had THE Holy Grail in it as it was being hidden by the Knights Templar? Now, I am in Triacastela and let me tell you, even with the heavy hiking days the volume of people is on the rise.

July 28 at 8:55am

This is El Bierzo wine region. See if you can find a bottle at your local store.

July 26 at 2:46pm

W/ a bunch of Koreans now. The Camino is very popular in many countries but Germany and Korea expecially. I know that in Germany there was a guy that wrote a Camino book much in the style as  Bill Bryson did about the Appalachian Trail in A Walk In The Woods. This is why it is popular there. On on.

July 26 at 2:42pm

tightness. Kind of worried, we’ll see how tmrw goes getting over the next mountain

July 26 at 2:42pm

Ok, in Vega de Valcarce, 42 today in pain. Lft leg has some muscle tear or something. I WILL limp along. It will just have to get better as it gets worse. I have just looked right at it and told it that.

July 26 at 2:42pm

Hiked to Ponferrada, it is Wow! amazing here, visit of ever u have the chance. Rooming w 3 from Sevilla. Heading to a Templar Castle. Its Santiago Day! Caio

July 25 at 7:16am

One of my favorite books THE ALCHEMIST was written by him to. If you like adventure, it is a great read. Tomorrow is Santiago Day...in Spain it is a huge deal...and holiday. I plan to hike into Ponferrada for this.

July 24 at 8:56am

Domino Ireland You would NOT believe where this place is AND the fact I am on the internet here.

July 24 at 9:42am

I hiked into the mountains to Foncebadon. Google that and "Paulo Coelho" and see what you come up with. Many are familiar with him but if not, read THE PILGRIMAGE After making the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1986, Coelho wrote this. The place I am at has a unique connection between him and Shirley MaLaine.

July 24 at 8:54am

Wow, In Astorga...and amazing city at the foothills to the mountains once again. Walked out of the Meseta...happy to leave it behind. At a pretty amazing publico albergue. Hiked alot with a Swede named Kristina today and met a few new faces along the trail. Now, pack is off, I am showered, time for a cerveza or five and to do some site-seeing about town. Until the next computer...adios amigos.

July 23 at 4:52am

Thank you to everyone who is following the adventure. If you know me, you know I love doing these things. I know it is cliche but, you do only go around once...

July 22 at 3:45pm

tomorrow, I pass a bridge where the inspiration for Don Quiote (Don Quinones) made a stand and held off 300 would be passers to declare his love for a gal. She must have been special. He did it and then took the shackles off and carried on to Santiago de Compestelo

July 22 at 3:45pm

lights out in 15 minutes. Alburgues have their own rules. Yes, only Pilgrims can stay there but, there are in and out rules. You get Sellos (stamps for your credential- what gets you your Compestella in Santiago) along the way, so I guess that counts.

July 22 at 3:41pm

Hold, someone just gave me a beer ¨FINKBRAU¨ from the machina

July 22 at 3:40pm

Kendra, she is from Vancouver and I have passed her as the only person I have seen twice in the past two days...same time. Afternoons, nobody hikes...cept me ...and a few others of course. Most leave the Albergue at 5 or 5:30 and retire at Noon or one to the next place. I pass most of them, some early , some late...but go further.

July 22 at 3:39pm

Sitting in an Albergue having beer out of a "soda" machine...nice! These are everywhere...except..USA. Big days of hiking lead to a longer rest at the end. Glad I left Leon, big cities can trap you, draw you in. I am glad I had the displine. Anyhow, made a few new friends today, one from Denmark...Tomi, he is very cool. Wish we were going the same pace, he’s the kind of person I can tell we’d be friends for life.

July 22 at 3:37pm

Well, well made it out of Leon. Am in Villadangos del Paramo new friends, Kendra frm Van. Canada & Tom fron Denmark. walk to Astorga tmrw.

July 22 at 11:46am

In Leon, just visited the Cathedral and am about to go to the Basillica de San Isidoro y Panteon de los Reyes. Google them...cool stuff indeed. On On!

July 21 at 3:13pm

Domino Ireland I am in Leon as of Friday AM but hiking on. I am not going to stay in town...too expensive and I need to do 30´s at least. I may arrive by the 1st or 2nd-without injury or illness. If I can do that then I can walk to Finnestera and never ride a bike. I need to fly out on the 6th. Hope we meet again on trail or in the future.

July 21 at 4:05pm ‎3 minutes left on this, going to try to upload a pic. I crashed the last computer I tried is on.

July 21 at 2:21pm I have-in my mind- devised a persentation on The Camino as well as a training for REI staff to outfit people properly for the Camino. You certainly don’t need what you do for the Appalachian Trail.

July 21 at 2:17pm Someone, please tell my boss Dany that I´ll see her on the 8th...I will be flying out on the 6th. (smile, I made it past the Bulls).

July 21 at 6:47pm After Leon comes the new Mountains to trek. I can see them now. Exciting. The Meseta I have been on all week is a bit like West Texas, even panhandleesque...with a bit of plains and endless wheat fields mixed in. Except, it has the occassional vast field of sunflowers to lift your spirit.

July 21 at 2:12pm I think about so many things throughout the day to get me through. I always have some many ideas to post but they when I finally find a computer... blank. It is bizarre. Google map Leon, Spain and trace the N120 east to Puenta Villarente...you´ll see the nasty road slog I´ll have to walk along or next to tomorrow AM (while most of you are still dreaming)

July 21 at 2:09pm I got to use a sickle with some farmers yesterday. i was not terrible, but not that good at slicing through the veggies either. Who else takes a vacation where all you do is punish your body for 6 to 8 hours every day? No Zeros, No Slackpacking...just pack up your mochila (backpack) and walk.

July 21 at 2:07pm There are a ton of teachers here from all over world. I´d bet there would be more from the US if folks back there only knew about the Camino. It is so well know in the rest of the world. Much like our beloved AT.

July 21 at 2:04pm What is an "Albergue" u ask? These are somewhat like hostels BUT they r only for Pelerginos (Pilgrims on the journey). I pronounce "pair of green Oh´s" I´ll make a shirt when done. How do they know u r a peregrino? We all have a scallop shell hanging on our pack, for one & we must have our credencial, the Pilgrim´s passport. It gets stamped at ever albergue & a sello at bars & supermakertas along "The Way"-The Camino.

July 21 at 2:02pm Ok, I am in an Albergue in Puenta Villarente, just 12K out of Leon. Not sure weather to use some of my bought time to just go to Leon and spend a Friday and evening there. I know many people that are far back pushing to get there tomorrow. I was going to head on through. This Albergue is built nice but no one is here, there are 4 people...that is a first. There has never been less than 30 at any I have stayed.

July 21 at 1:53pm Domino Ireland I said ¨weather¨above...oops, hope I did not just jinx myself.

July 21 at 1:53pm Tons of fun out in the middle of nowhere.Cheers,Domino

July 20 at 3:07pm  Just introduced 40people from 7 countries to Domino style Legumes for dinner(spicy). Big hit..all gone. Then represented the USA by singing Friends In Low Places after dinner.

July 20 at 3:07pm left foot has a rock band going...let’s call them Twisted Blisters

July 20 at 11:22amWatching people playing Dominoes and Tour de France is on the cafe tv, in Bercianos. Albergue is great here w friendly people. 38 today and another new blister.

July 20 at 11:22am I do miss my wife, Debra. I miss Raleigh too. I have never missed a city before on any adventures I have taken. Deb has always been with me though.

July 19 at 8:55pm "The Alchemist" book is on the fruit stand..." on Debra Ireland's status.."I MISS my girl. You are with me..." Like hurricanes, I have 4 ¨named¨blisters. I thought I was immune to those. Funny, there is a computer out here. Spain LOVES it´s cell phones and internet. I think there was a bathroom with a computer 25 miles from civilization some 100k back. I am gonna take a benedryl now and call it quits. My spider bite is starting to fade...it looked just like the ¨bullseye¨I got from tick on the AT (we know what that means).

July 19 at 5:16pm NO more 41km days (well, maybe). That´s over 4 10ks that I usually run. 35 is my limit. Tomorrow I´ll cross the half way mark....half way in my vaca. Nice. Looks like I will fly out on the 6th or so. I think I do a compare-contrast if the AT and the Camino for a presentation later this year. One thing is for sure, folks on the Camino need ¨leave no trace¨training and we need Trail Angels on the Camino. There are none.

July 19 at 5:06pm I am in Calzidilla de Cueza (google earth THAT) and see what you get (nada mas). I am with Honza the Czech, Enzo the Italian, Evert the ¨San Jose´n¨¨ and a slew of others I cant pronounce their names or speak their language. We just finished playing a card game called ¨Pumba¨like uno only you have to do push-ups upon being the last one out. Honza lost every time. Sore pecs maybe?

July 19 at 3:29pm Ok. I am in the middle of freaking nowhere Spain. 17.5 extra is a HARD F´n thing on a summer afternoon. My blisters have sisters now. Oh, N. Spain public bathroom lights are on a timer. You better know where the switch is because it is always a shorter timespan than my bladder et al.

July 19 at 3:25pm To Jason Knowles at Outside Magazine-Thanks Jas. these are the things they don’t write about in OUTSIDE Mag or other publications. Nor do they write about wearing ear plugs or headphones to drown out the snoring and fart sounds in an Albergue.

July 19 at 3:40pm long hard walks. sent some stuff home via mail so that helps a bit with the pack weight. it is the duldrums walking all day in the heat but the people you meet are great. There are alot of people dropping off. I miss the friends i have already made but must hike my own hike.

July 19 at 6:52pm in Carrion de los Condes for lunch, have already done 25, gonna push 17.5 more through a waterless, shadeless section at the heat of the day. Walking with an italian, a few irish and a ton of others. Yesterdays Albergue was like an oasis, it even had a pool. OH, and i stopped at a church to take a picture and a bird shat on me.

July 19 at 6:38am Long day on Meseta. N Boadilla w lots of new people. Almost halfway. Feet hurt, farmers tan.

July 18 at 2:40pm In Hontanas, 31k had 2 leave chris n claudia behind. Tough day on the Meseta new blister. Just as hard leaving C &C, we had grown close. It is amazing how quickly the trail can reveal a friendship.

July 18 at 11:01am · oh my feet, heading 17.5 beyond Carrion

July 19 at 6:39am Pushed 36 today. AM my worst, PM my best. Lft, foot troubles. In San Juan de Ortega, on to Burgos tmrw.

July 15 at 8:59pm I did get to Skype with my wife yesterday from "The Camino," and that was a true highlight. I finally figured out how to make the sound work (Sorry Fly By Mike). I cooked a wonderful hiker pasta soup last night for a few amigos...it felt great to be in a somewhat kitcvhen again but it is madning sharing it with twnety other groups of people trying to do the same thing.

July 14 at 11:07am Day 9 until I got my first blister. LUCKY, I guess. I think I´ll name it, like everyone else out here does, after someone from the past that they dont like.

July 14 at 2:50pm If you can see Christoph Schädtler as one of my friends, you should be able to see a pic or two of me. I have not had the chance to upload the hundreds of pics I have. Maybe later, always rushed and these foreign keyboards are very intimidating.

July 16 at 2:36pm I am only going to text to Facebook only now from the Camino in Spain as it costs a butt-load to do this and twitter.

July 14 at 10:59am I am in Redecilla de Camino. I have a bottle of San Miguel to my right and friends to my left. A true "one horse town" but, it has a major highway running through it and a Camino cyclist pilgrim was hit earlier. Chris n I went to help but the ambulance got there as we did.

July 16 at 2:38pm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azofra,_Spain

July 13 at 9:31am  I´ll try to get on here at least once a week. It is amazing! Feet hurt but you forget about that with all the adventure. Cheers!

July 16 at 2:40pm HEY ALL! First time on the actual internet since being on the trail. Buen Camino! If you reply to these, I probably wont see them until August when I am done. In Azofra for those keeping track. The Rioja region of Spain...amazing. Glasses of wine for about 80 cents...beer is expensive..by the cents standard. I have made some great friends frm all over d world.

July 13 at 9:14am ·

WOW, I show up in town and hear my name being called out....C & C, and it is great to see them again. W/ Chris’s y Claudia now. Off to Azofra tmrw.

July 12 at 4:30pm

In Rioja region @ Navarette, went hard, left Arvid n Mateo. Hope to catch up with others I know. It is hard hiking on past friends you have made. As with any path, just walk...you will make more friends.

July 12 at 9:18pm ·

Along the trail we drank free frm a wine tap outside a vinyard, AYCD!

July 11 at 7:16pm

Just celebrated a Spanish B-day and yes, I helped cook. Days long, feet ache but what an Unbelievable adventure. Buen Camino!

July 10 at 4:11pm

Just read a sign here it says, “this is not Spain.“ – Basque Country. (see pic)

July 10 at 10:27pm

At a cafe in Estella, 16 miles today. Celbratin smons b-day. Signs

July 10 at 8:28am

Today I ran w the Toros, visited a church made by the Knights Templar & walked far. Not a bad day.

July 13 at 11:24am Domino Ireland has run with the bulls. Hola! when I get done Ill do some better bull identifier stuff. The day I ran was the biggest day of San Fermin with the toughest bulls and the absolute most people. I was more scared of the mass amounts of people than I was of t bulls.

July 14 at 10:54am This was posted by a friend, I did not see anyone get gored...but I wasnt looking either. http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/07/08/spain.bull.running/index.html?hpt=hp_bn2

Australian man gored in 2nd day of Spain's running of the bulls

www.cnn.com A 24-year-old Australian man was gored in the thigh Friday, the second day of the annual running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain...

July 8 at 1:43pm This is a crazy place...and I run w Bulls tomorrow. At an International Party we found here in Pamplona. Am with Matteo and Arvid...and some a Basque couple buying us pints.

July 8 at 10:48pm Woa! In Pamplona, San Fermin Festival. OMG, it is Mardi Gras’esque but everyone wears white with red scarfs. Tomorrow, I run with el toros!

July 8 at 8:05am Done w/ Pyrenees. Buen Camino!

July 7 at 3:44pm A Great Time. Appalachian Trail this is not, but it is still hard on the feet.

July 7 at 2:05pm So many nationalities, so many good people. 1 day out of Pamplona.

July 6 at 11:55am Basque country, Spain! Roncesvalles, with some awesome people sure 2 b friends w. Today was 2 b the hardest hike of all. Medium difficulty by AT standards. 27km over the Pyrenees. WOW!

July 6 at 8:11pm · Havn beers w two italians, a norweigian n a Spaniard n the Pyrenees. I dont inderstand much conversation, cept... Cheers!

July 5 at 8:03pm · Sad I missed the 4th back home but, the Irish had a big celebration for us in the airport in Dublin yesterday. There was a cowboy juggler, a lady dressed as the statue of liberty and a bunch of guys singing "Mack the Knife." What else could one ask for on Independance Day, USA? Yes, there where even the little US flags on a stick, dongt worry.

July 5 at 1:40am Yes, people still rollerblade, they are all in Bourdeaux, FR

July 4 at 12:22pm Oh the wine becons but I’m gonna save that for another time, heading to meet-up with my room host.

July 4 at 12:22pm Bourdeax. I should have took French. Wish my wife was with me here, it is amazing along the river. A bottle or two of wine and a picnic with her here is in the future.
