Welcome

Welcome to my website! Here you'll find mostly photos reflecting my interest in Dr. Grabow smoking pipes and maybe some of my 1936 Chevy and a few other things that I hold near and dear.  In the near future I hope to add some comments and descriptions to make things even more interesting.  Stop by every once in awhile to see what's new.  --RJ--

2010 Dr. Grabow Pipe Factory Tour -- Sparta, NC, etc.

100_0682.jpg
100_0682.jpg
Duane (?) runs the hand frazer to shape a pipe bowl and shank.  He is one of several retired employees that came back to work a couple days a week at the factory.  Frank said it was hard to find new employees and that it takes a considerable amount of time to train someone to use the machines. By the way, EXCELLENT shot, Teri!!!  2010-07-14

Teri and I start our long awaited and greatly anticipated trip to Sparta, NC. Flew first leg from Killeen, Texas to Houston Texas on this Saab SF340 (operated for Continental Airlines). I love small planes and especially prop planes (albeit this is a turbo-prop), but I don't think Teri was very impressed. Still, it's quicker and easier to fly out of my local airport nearby (Gray Army-Air Force Base), rather than drive to Dallas, Austin or Houston to catch a flight.

I meet Ed. Well, this is after I met Ed and Tom (ted) at the Charlotte, NC airport and Tom is driving us back to Sparta.

(Left to Right) Dave Whitney, Ed James and Tom Douglas in Tom's garage at Piney Creek, NC. Our Dr. Grabow Collector's Forum group is starting to arrive for the 2nd Annual DGCF meeting and Dr. Grabow pipe factory tour!!! Maybe it was because we had "met" online, but after every introduction it was more like running into an old classmate at a Class reunion. There was instant bonding and the easy conversation of old friends within seconds of meeting. And this sort of thing repeated itself each time a new arrival showed up!

And Dave turned out to be a master story teller! Always entertaining and a delight to be around. Of course, everyone else was, too, but Dave would still win the yarn spinning competition in my opinion! Both Dave and Ed are master craftsmen, too and there ability to resurrect and restore old beat up Dr. Grabows is without equal!!! Dave especially, sells many restored Dr. Grabows on eBay.

Dave telling on of his many fascinating stories.  And when I say "stories" I don't mean fabrications, either.  True tales but told in a way that is not only entertaining, but often spellbinding.

If you are going through these pictures, I suggest going through them in order presented, as once the initial "introduction" is made with the folks featured in the photos, it'll be first-name basis after that.  Just the way it was when we met.  Old friends at first acquaintance.  I haven't experienced that very often in life, but this was an exceptional group of folks that met in Piney Creek and Sparta.  Must be the kindred interest in the Dr. Grabow band of pipes bringing birds of a feather together . . .

Ed and Tom.  Tom's probably typing gibberish because he's still not used to his new laptop that has number keys that shifted the other keys to the left compared to his old one. Looks like he's smoking an OMEGA for this bowl.  2010-07-13

Dave making a point while he and Ed discuss Doodler pipes. I continued to be amazed at Dave's knowledge of ALL pipes, not just Dr. Grabows. That little grille cooks some great hamburgers as I was to find out several days later. I have to be fed several times a day to keep me happy . . . 2010-07-13

In between tales, Dave takes a puff on a Dr. Grabow #81 Author shape.  Don't know what line as Dave likes the 81 and had them from several different lines!!! 2010-07-13

Wesley (left) arrives!  Another case of a new "old friend" joining in.  Tom finds another chair and the fun continues.  Wesley Brown shows us his "Five for a Dollar" Dr. Grabow pipes acquisition that he picked up at an antique store somewhere on the trip to Piney Creek.  He ended up with a lot of pipes, but he "only bought one pipe AT THE FACTORY."  That's his story and he's sticking to it!  2010-07-13

Unfortunately, some of the gang still hadn't made it.  Taken after the fine meal at Shatley Springs.  I'm no longer hungry!  Clockwise from left to right starting at lower left corner: My lovely wife, Teri McKay; Tom; Ed and his wife Freda; Trease and Terry Carpenter; "Doc Brian" Hendrickson; Dave; Wesley and; Travers ("irishlefty") Devine  ( www.irishlefty.com ). 2010-07-13

A not-very-good shot of Shatley Springs.  It's a beautiful place!!!  It has excellent food served family style, and it has cabins on a lake and good-for-what-ails-you Shatley Springs water with healing powers.  2010-07-13

It was dark -- or near dark -- but I thought I would try a photo or two without the flash.  If you can hold it still, my new camera does a great job in low light situations.  (LtoR) Wesley, Terry, Tom and Travers. 2010-07-13

I wouldn't post so many similar shots, but each person looks their best in different photos.  I don't know what has captured everyone's attention, but Tom's deck has a spectacular view of some of the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia.  (LtoR) Wesley, Terry, Tom (and Buddy), Doc and Travers. 2010-07-13

Gracen Lucas -- what an interesting and friendly man!  In the exact same way it happened in 2009, just happened to meet him leaving Brown's Restaurant just as we were arriving.  This time I managed a photo -- I was so in awe last year I didn't even snap a photo.  I was still so in awe this year, I didn't snap a very good one.

Retired now, Gracen started with Dr. Grabow in Sparta in 1958 (he made 65 cents an hour when he hired out), quit in a year or two and then came back in 1973.  He and a fellow named Jimmy Jones studied Danish, English, Dutch and everybody else's pipes and CREATED 137 shapes that were examined by the sales force, which was ultimately pared down to what became known as the "CONTINETAL" shapes.  Now you know why I was in such awe when I met him.

Gracen graciously talked with us for several minutes in front of Brown's.  He mentioned that, "somewhere at the house, I told Tom, I still got the other 125 or whatever is left of all those original shapes . . . if I find them I'll just give them to him, 'cause he's the only one that ever took interest in 'em to try and do something with the pipe . . ."  Tom said Gracen was "probably one of the most talented people I ever met as far as working with me . . ."

When we parted company, Gracen said, "Well, keep smoke'n them things (pipes) -- I got one somewhere here in my pocket.  That's one habit I've never been able to break . . ."

I hope to put up a bit more information about Gracen and other Dr. Grabow employees, past and present, on my website soon.  All the employees I have met are such wonderful and friendly folks!!!  They are so deserving of recognition and I greatly admire them.  Some folks have sports heroes -- my heroes are the men and women of "Dr. Grabow."

Hey, Hey, the gang's all here!  (LtoR)  Late arrivals the evening before, Steve Riddle and his wife Bonnie (hidden behind Steve) join us for breakfast and good times at Brown's Restaurant in Sparta on July 14th. Conversations abound as everyone contemplates their order.  Terry and his wife, Trease and, Dave at nearest table, then Freda (Ed's wife), Ed, Travers (his back anyway), Wesley and Doc.  2010-07-14

Dave and Terry discuss finer points of pipedom.  Unfortunately, trying to be everywhere at once and listen to everyone's conversations (I didn't want to miss anything!) only allowed me to get bits and pieces.  That's a good thing!  I'll just have to go back next year and try it again.  2010-07-14

The 2010 DGCF Tour of the Dr. Grabow Pipe Factory begins in the lobby.  Causing jaws to drop are the special pipes that are available for immediate purchase.  Some of the group saw them last year and bought several.  They are eyed approvingly and I am sure we all figured on checking them out and buying a few before we leave.  Some folks with backs turned and/or hidden, but left to right, they are:  Bonnie, Steve, Travers, Doc, Terry, Wesley, Ed and Dave.  Little did we know then, but later in the tour some even MORE SPECIAL pipes would emerge to catch our fancy!!!  2010-07-14

100_0643.jpg
Mr. Rick Wooten (left), IP&A Vice President, Sales and Marketing, greets us before the tour of the factory.  To the right of Rick is Frank Dixon, who led our tour last year and will do the honors again this year.  We were given "red carpet" treatment and it was greatly appreciated!!!  Since Steve is off camera, I am not even going to mention that it is Steve and his camera to the extreme right.  2010-07-14
100_0644.jpg
100_0644.jpg
Rick gives us a short introduction to the tour while Frank warms up with a few Karate moves.  He had some of us in the tour last year and he knows how we are when we see pipe stems and pipe parts.  In addition to giving us the tour, he'll have to handle security as well . . . 2010-07-14

The tour begins.  (LtoR) Tom, Dave, Travers, Terry, Ed, Wesley, Doc, Steve and Bonnie look at large wall display depicting the various stages of a pipe being made from start to finish.  I probably could spend an hour gawking at that.  I tried to get some decent pictures of it at the end of the tour so I could study them later.  2010-07-14

100_0651.jpg
This year, rather than dividing my attention by taking pictures, I turned the camera over to my wife, Teri with very little instruction.  Here, (LtoR), Wesley, Doc, Travers and R.J. McKay look at large bags of briar and listen to Frank.  Frank has worked at the factory for 47 years and will be retiring in March at age 66! 2010-07-14

100_0654.jpg
Just as I did last year, Teri catches a block in the air and headed for the right bag after Bryan Johnson has gauged it for size.  Frank said they used to have five or six guys doing the sorting, but now just one man does it and it's not even full-time.  2010-07-14

Another shot of Bryan sorting. Frank also mentioned they used to have 360 or 370 "hands in here, but now we're down 30" in the factory.  2010-07-14

100_0661.jpg
Another shot of the sizing and some of the shapes obtained from it.  The only instructions I hastily gave my wife, Teri, about taking photos was that I like "people shots" and "to try and get shots of everything with writing and stuff on it", the latter primarily for my own "notes" and reference.  2010-07-14

100_0664.jpg
This looked like it would be some significant information.  Haven't figured it all out yet, but I am sure it means something.  Not sure what the "CVS" sticker represents. 2010-07-14
100_0665.jpg
100_0665.jpg
The factory contains a machine shop are where all the specialized equipment is made and maintained.  I would like to see the shop in operation, too!  That would be a tour unto itself. 2010-07-14
100_0666.jpg
100_0666.jpg
Letting my wife take pictures is a big advantage.  She notices things that I don't.  I don't know if this big pipe cut-out was there last year or not, but I didn't see it this year either. I actually remember the clearance sign, though.  Hmm.  True Dr. Grabow pipe fans will note that the spade is represented ion the WRONG side of the pipe.  2010-07-14

100_0673.jpg
100_0673.jpg
This photo should be rotated to the right, but I did not do that account I figured it would be easier to look at and recognize the shapes in this orientation.  Tom could probably quickly ID these shapes.  I think these are sample shapes used to set up and/or check the set-up of the equipment. 2010-07-14
100_0674.jpg
100_0674.jpg
As much of interest as the machine in this photo is the burlap bag full of briar, particularly it's markings. 2010-07-14
100_0675.jpg
100_0675.jpg
I believe this is a hand frazer machine.  On the right of the machine is the hand wheel used to rotate what, for a lack of a better description, looks like a car crankshaft.  The metal "wheel" to its left rotates with the cutting blades and follows the contour of a metal shape of the pipe shape being made.  As the machine is manipulated, the blades (which can be seen in the metal shroud) cut the briar roughly to the shape of that metal "model". 2010-07-14
100_0676.jpg
100_0676.jpg
More boxes of stummels.  Compared to last year it APPEARED they were making considerably more pipes, although that may just be a false impression depending of what particular operations are being done on a given day. 2010-07-14
100_0677.jpg
100_0677.jpg
Same as the previous photo.  I told Teri to get lost of photos of stuff like this as the tags on the boxes might provide some useful information later. 2010-07-14

100_0681.jpg
These blocks have had the tops shaped and are ready for the next stage.  I am hastily throwing up comments the best as I recall what was taking place, but I am hoping that Tom will follow up with necessary corrections or better explanations.  I have some photos that I took of the display shown to us at the beginning of the tour, that when edited, may help me explain some of the operations. 2010-07-14
100_0683.jpg
100_0683.jpg
Here you can see the blades (in the shroud) cutting the briar to the same shape as the silver-looking metal model.  Duane has operated this machine for over 30 years, I believe he told me. 2010-07-14
100_0685.jpg
100_0685.jpg
Not sure, but this appears to be the dimensions of the "Continental" shapes.  Sort of an odd thing to still find posted, since I think it has been some time since a Continental shape has been produced.  One of these days I will measure mine to see if it matches up. 2010-07-14
100_0686.jpg
100_0686.jpg
These bowls have been topped and are waiting on Duane to shape them -- from the blocks it looks like they are all bents. 2010-07-14

100_0697.jpg
Another shot of Bobby.  I'd know more about what Bobby was doing except in a humorous moment, when Frank started to explain the operation, Bobby -- who had hearing protection in -- didn't hear Frank say to hold off starting the machine and took it as the OK to begin. The machine is fairly noisy, so I really didn;t hear everything Frank said after that!  2010-07-14
100_0698.jpg
100_0698.jpg
From what I remember from last year, this is Steve Dixon at one of the machines.  Last year he was sanding, but that's not what he's doing here.  I THINK he may be setting up one of the machines for doing another shape.  Seems like he was measuring the models and making adjustments.  Tom, what's he doing?  2010-07-14

(LtoR) Frank, Duane (?), RJ, Terry and Ed.  If I look concerned, I might be.  I got carried away chatting with Duane (everyone there is very friendly!) and then I realized the tour was moving on without me.  I don't know what it is, but it seems like everyone was always waiting on me or I was hurrying to catch up.  No matter where we went, it seemed like I was always lagging behind! 2010-07-14

(LtoR) Ed, Duane, RJ, Terry and Wesley.  Maybe I wasn't lagging behind after all.  Or maybe I lagged behind so far that I was actually ahead of the group at this machine.  2010-07-14

(LtoR) Ed, RJ and Duane.  I think Ed is telling me he'd like to have that machine!!!  Ed is one heck of a pipe restorer and craftsman, so he was taking a pretty keen interest in all the equipment and operations. 2010-07-14

(LtoR) Travers, Ed, RJ and Duane.  Ed takes a closer look -- something he was seen doing A LOT during the tour.  We were ALL fascinated, but I think Ed SHOWED it more than anyone!  The employees seemed to enjoy the tour as much as we did, too! 2010-07-14

Some of the models of shapes that Travers was taking a picture of in the previous photo.  Some of the shapes may not have been produced in years, but I think somewhere on some wall, there is a model to every shape they ever produced.  I could have spent a lot more time just examining all the shapes!!! 2010-07-14

Well, in my haste, quality control of my uploads went kaput.  I thought I was rotating one photo and I think I rotated the whole batch I uploaded by accident.  Patience, my friends.  I'll get back to these in a day or two and get it corrected.  Until then, consider it good exercise for your neck . . .

Teri did a masterful job taking this picture!  I took one of this last year and never did figure out the belt routing and what it did.  Here I can clearly see it and can see it twisting the layers of paper into the filter shape.

Back by the filter machine the tour starts to get a bit distracted by some treasures that were dug up -- vintage NOS (new old stock) pipes that had been kept somewhere in the factory.  They weren't Dr. Grabows, but rather some things Mastercraft marketed years ago.  My interest is only marginal at this point, but things would show up later that got me excited.

I'm thinking, "Yeah, they're neat and all, but that ain't Dr. Grabows . . ."

On the porch at Crouse Park.  At the top of the photo on the table are some of the things Travers (Irishlefty) brought and the other half of the table is some stuff Dave  (Whitney's Pipes) brought for the gathering.  As I was flying in and didn't trust the airlines with my pipes, I only brought my master pipe chart and some of my favorite pipes I could stow in my carry-on luggage.  I had intended on bringing some NOS Royal Dukes to give away to this year's attendees, but didn't even realize until I returned home that I had forgotten all about them!

Apparently my unfinished Dr. Grabow Master Pipe Shape Chart was a big hit and IT went like hotcakes -- well, one hotcake anyway, as I only had the one.  Unfortunately, it was the one I had made notes on.  I needed to redo and update it anyway!  2010-07-14

An earlier shot of the car. My wife and I managed to break the front bumper when we towed it home after it left me stranded a few miles from home. It took a lot of tinkering with the engine and wiring to get it running, work out fuel problems, etc., so for awhile I didn't stray too far from home!

That old 1996 Chevy S10 i the background will later serve as the "donor car" for the engine, transmission and rear end upgrade for my '36 Chevy.  I had wanted to keep my old Chevy completely original, but as much as I drive it and as much more as I want to drive it, it wasn't working out too well and it was getting painfully obvious to me what the ideal solution (for me, anyway) would be.

The original engine in my old car developed a knock, and come to find out it was one of the rods. The engine was just plum worn out! There weren't even any shims left in any of the bearings.

Another '36 Chevy owner had an engine that he had overhauled and only put about 50 miles on before he decided to hot rod his car. A friend of mine and I drove non-stop from Texas to Mississippi and back to get the above engine and transmission.

I did the engine and transmission swap with no help, but it took awhile. Here I have almost everything removed so that I can jerk out the old engine and tranny.  I hadn't done anything like this since high school, so it was interesting and even a bit of fun -- reminded me of working on my old '55 Chevy pickup and overhauling my '62 Corvair about 30-something years ago!

I eventually want to drive my car around the country and take pictures of it and various backdrops, like old service stations. Here I just took a quick picture of it with a Santa Fe steam locomotive that is parked at the Temple Railroad Museum.

My '36 in front of the old Taylor Motor Company dealership (the Chevy and Buick house) in Taylor, Texas.  I have long wanted to shoot some pictures of my car and this sign and now my car is roadworthy to make such a trip!  I hope to take photos with the car and other old dealerships and filling stations that have the period look.

My car goes "home" again!  Well, sort of.  It sits in front of what used to be Taylor Motor Company, 200 Porter Street, Taylor, Texas.  It is a "period" dealership from the 1930s or 40s I presume from the signage.  Actually, my car was purchased new in Missouri.

A beautiful sign and example of an old Chevy house!!!  It still has the neon tubes on the sign, though I don't know if it will still light up.  If it does still light up, it would make some great night shots with my car.

Long story short -- this is my car parked about where the first car I bought (a 1962 Corvair) was parked in 1975 when this building was the old Ford house in Taylor, Texas.  Also parked there back then was a 1937 Chevy pickup, but my Dad convinced me to buy a 1962 instead.  I really wanted that old pickup, so I returned to the scene of the lost chance for a photo op.  One day I still hope to find and purchase a '37 Chevy p/u!

Made it down to Granger, Texas to check out the filming for the remaking of TRUE GRIT. I primarily went down there to see the old steam locomotive they trucked and fired up for a segment in the movie.

My car is way too new for the time period of TRUE GRIT, but I thought a shot of my car including that old steam locomotive and train would be cool, nonetheless. When my car was new, steam ruled the railroads, though the diesel-electric locomotive was in its infancy and being used some at the time.

Rough in fitting of the new Clutch Master Cylinder, mounted logically enough, next to the original Brake Master Cylinder.  Those wire nuts (and many more I used) were all my old temporary wiring when I added turn signals to the old car -- got quite a laugh from Adrian and Danny.  I guess I'll finally make the wiring more permanent when we finish this upgraded drive train project.

A friend of mine and I drove from Texas to Mississippi and return to pick up this engine and tranny.  I put about 1700 miles on it, but finally decided the vibration it always had was something I couldn't live with and couldn't trust on longer trips.  Had this motor not had that vibration, I probably would not have contemplated the drive engine and drive train upgrade.  I have three '36 motors now and probably will sell all except the one that originally came in the car.  This engine sports the New-in-Box 1953 era Rochester carb I bought off eBay.

Now comes the fun part for Adrian and Danny -- sorting out the wiring!!!  Some of it is needed in the new application and some of it isn't.  I have to admit that I had not considered the complexity of the fuel injection system and the engine computer and all of the sensors and wiring.  At this stage they are ID'ing the wires and marking them to correspond to the wiring diagrams.

The silver looking box on the firewall is the computer and at last, the wiring has been sorted out and routed.  I had no idea there was that much wiring in a four-cylinder S10.  In order to use an old temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, etc., some new plumbing had to be added.  In the end, the plumbing for the temperature sending unit had to be redone as it wasn't "in the flow" of the water and didn't register.

We'll see how this exhaust system set-up works out.  Might be a bit low, but then, I don't plan much off-roading.  With the stock Chevy S10 crossover pipe, the exhaust pipe runs down the opposite side than the stock '36 system.  Used a simple long glass-pack, not for the throaty sound, but mainly for trouble-free service.  Another reason we didn't go down driver's side was that is where all the hydraulics were and it was thought better to keep heat away from the area.

A look at the front shocks.  We were going to stay with the original front shocks and just rebuild them, but after disassembling them found they were leaking out the shafts and basically not really worth the time or effort to rebuild.  It took a bit to find the SHORT shocks needed and build the mounts for them, but they work like a charm.

The original cooling fan lined up fairly low on the radiator -- for that and other considerations like the air conditioning condenser, an electric fan was also added.  A battery box was fashioned and the battery moved to the engine compartment because with the new transmission, cross member and moving the original emergency brake back, it wouldn't fit under the floor any more.  I had no problem with the battery being located under the floor, but must admit I do like this placement much better.

Sharp eyes might note the power steering pump has been removed from the engine and it was necessary to find a shorter serpentine belt.

Things are getting cleaned up on the inside as well.  Note modified old shift lever applied to new shifter.  Maybe I am silly, but for all the modifications, I still wanted the look and the feel of the old shift lever and emergency brake.  Only a true afficionado will notice something amiss with those levers moved back about seven inches.  When I drive it, I soon forget it's been modified and that was the whole objective!

Another view of the new battery box and the fuses and relays that were dropped a bit to make room for it.  In the end, I like the neat little functional package this 2.2L and five-speed made.  The performance is just what I was hoping for and more!  It's not a hot rod, but it'll scoot and get -- about all I would want to on original size tires for sure.

Yessir, that's the air cleaner we chose -- although I am proud of everything that is stowed away under the hood, it's not a show car and I didn't want any chrome plated do-dads in there.  Everything just needs to be functional, maintenance friendly and accessible.

That pretty much finished the project.  We had one small coolant leak and the a/c compressor had a plug come out with a resultant refrigerant leak, but after the initial shakedown all is operating well and I am extremely happy with the outcome.

This conversion may not be for everyone, but it was the perfect solution for me.  I thank my mechanics Adrian and Dannie of Adrian's Garage for their expert help and for working with me to achieve my goal and realize my ultimate dream car.

Yep, it DOES occasionally get cold in Central Texas and it'll even snow every now and then!!!  The actual temperature is probably 2 to 3 degrees colder than shown because the thermometer is mounted under an eave on the front porch where heat from the house affects it.  Quite a change from summer when it often pegs 100 degrees or better.

Yep, I'm an idiot!  But it's lots of fun.  It actually drives rather nicely.  What I didn't count on was other idiots out driving around -- a concern that was starkly driven home when a pickup truck I was meeting that was coming up a hill suddenly started spinning around and coming into my lane.  At first he tried to recover, but then just eased around until he was proceeding back down the hill ahead of me.  He gave up the notion of trying to climb the hill again, but I was a bit paranoid after that incident!

I had stopped to take my photo next to this old (erected in 1936!) historical marker near Little River, Texas where I had taken pictures of other cars I owned when a nice fellow stopped and offered to take MY picture with the car.  I thought he was stopping because of the car, but his only objective was to take my photo for me.  He DID tell me about a lot of history and about a cemetery located nearby that I knew nothing about, even though I have lived in the area for almost 45 years!

My 1955 (late model) pickup at Flagstaff, Arizona circa September 1976.  During the summer and winter of '76 I had driven this truck three round trips between my home in Texas and where I worked in Winslow, Arizona at the time.  The mechanic I bought the truck from had put a 283 engine in it with four-barrel Rochester, a granny gear four-speed transmission from a 1950 Chevy truck and custom built drive shaft.  It was a GREAT old truck!

My FIRST car, a 1962 Chevy Corvair 4-dr parked at the Santa Fe depot at Temple, Texas circa August 1975.  I had a choice between this and a 1937 Chevy pickup, but my Dad convinced me to get the Corvair for $500 because he didn't think I could work on the '37 pickup.  As it was, I completely overhauled the Corvair after I got it in a shop on the farm of my friend's Dad's.  Broke it in driving to the Wild West Music Fest on the Steiner Ranch near Austin, Texas.

This is the only photo that I know that I have of it.

What's this doing in here? Well, I decided to expand the catagory a bit to inlcude significant cars in my life. This is a car my parents bought new while I was in high school. Hondas were so popular then there was actually a waiting list at dealerships to get the cars as they were delivered. They were great cars and eventually owned this one myself, putting many more miles on it after doing a valve job myself on it after it burned a valve (you need to adjust those valves periodically!). My parents traded in our 1966 Chevy pickup for it. The reason my parents bought this car was because my Brother, then in the US Coast Guard, had bought a new 1973 Honda and my Dad was so impressed with the little car, he decided to buy one.

My 1980 L82 Corvette, nearly new at the time.  I ordered it new (to replace my 1969 Corvette) and then had to wait for some time because the Government had held them up on production of the L82 engine for some reason or another.  IT came with a speedometer that only went up to 85 MPH as was the rule those days, but I quickly bought an aftermarket speedo that went up to 160 MPH.  It was a very nice car, though not as good overall as the 1963 Corvette.

Our nearly new 1987 Honda Civic is in the photo.  Traded in my 1980 Corvette for it -- long story, but I am sure it is familiar to anyone starting a family and commuting a considerable distance to work.  Even back then, I gave myself about a $200 to $300 pay raise a  month by the savings in gas! (37 mpg vs. 16 mpg.)  I miss the old 1980 Corvette (but not as much as my 1963 Split-window Corvette), but that is a past chapter in my life . . .

My 1996 Chevy S10 pickup returns home after serving as the donor car for my 1936 Chevy upgrade project.  I'll pick a few more parts off of it before eventually selling the frame and body to a hot rodder or scrapping it.  It sits by my 1936 Chevy 4dr Sedan parts car.

"Back in the day" I was single and did a lot of traveling in my cars.  I would spend my entire vacation just driving around to new places and visiting friends where I had been before.  I miss those days of traveling and hope to do much more in the future in my old '36 Chevy.  There's my '80 Corvette in front of the all but abandoned depot at Douglas, Arizona back in September 1980.

My Mom is the ten-year old girl on the left in this photo. I threw it in this album because it has a neat old car in it (and a horse and wagon), but also because I would like to identify the location of this Southern Pacific depot.

My 1963 Chevrolet split-window Corvette -- Man!  What a car that was!

Just a neat old automobile picture from the family albums. Taken in 1921 by my Grandfather, Wilford Fletcher.

I scanned a portion of this 1921 photo to better show the cars and what looks like motorcycles with sidecars.  If any car buffs can identify the automobiles, I would be interested in knowing what makes and year models they are!

An interesting visitor to Temple, Texas and an unlikely locomotive to be in the diesel servicing facility -- JOBX 33011, an electric locomotive that was used on the NdeM in Mexico. Could be going to one of the power company electric railroads in New Mexico or Arizona. December 16th, 2011.

Newest Arrival to the Temple & Central Texas fleet, sitting in scale track in BNSF yard at Temple, Texas.  Taken on way home from work.  We delivered the unit to the TCRR in the next day or two.  The GP15-1 is leased from Larry's Truck Electric and hopefully will work better than the GP38s they have which I believe have had some issues.

My Daughter, Natalie, delivering a wonderful and moving speech at her Pinning Ceremony the night before her graduation from Mary Hardin-Baylor. My biggest regret is that I realized too late the video capability of my camera and I only shot a short segment of it.  I have always been proud of her, but my pride bubbled over into tears, realizing what a great job she did and how public speaking wasn't something she had done or was comfortable with.

This was one of the emotionally charged parts of the speech.  She'll be a great teacher!

I figured out the movie feature of my camera would work better than still photos in the fading evening light, but in my excitement of finally spotting Jake in the procession of UT School of Communications Graduates, I forgot to focus. Jake is in the center of the screen and his friend and one time roommate, Jeff Driggers is to his right.

OK, managed to get focused, now if I could just keep the camera still. Jake seemed genuinely happy and excited and I am glad he felt compelled to do a few antics for the camera, especially since he doesn't seem to like me shooting photos and video of him anyway. He made me laugh, as he always does! His Mom and I were excited and happy, too!

I think Jake is saying, "CUT!", but I just keep shooting. In a bit I lost him in the sea of UT Grads and the program began in earnest.  We were lucky to have been sitting on the side Jake walked down, although had I known, I would have selected the end of the row.  We didn't know what to expect and I don't think Jake did either.  At least these clips are mercifully short, right? Comes from the "old school" days of expensive 50 foot rolls of 8mm and 16mm film. Still could use some editing, though. Thanks for not hiding, Jake -- AND CONGRATULATIONS FROM MOM AND DAD!!!

After the ceremonies, Jake seeks us out. He's in the center of the frame. I know, not that great of a clip.
