DugdemonaSWCD - Make a Splash with Project WET
Make a Splash with Project WET is the largest nationwide day of water education in the world. It is celebrated across the with water festivals, which are educational, fun, and interactive water celebrations where students explore a diversity of water-related topics.
The water festivals consist of multiple structured learning stations where students actively engage in hands-on water activities and investigations. Station topics include the hydrologic cycle, ground water, spring water, water quality, wetlands, water management, water conservation, soils, and the properties of water.

Over 250 students submersed in water
…education!
On October 14, 2010 approximately 250 4th grade students from Caldwell, Jackson and Winn parish schools made the trip to Jimmie Davis State Park in Chatham, Louisiana to take part in an effort to raise an awareness of the need for water education and conservation. The objective of this annual event is to highlight the role of water in people’s everyday lives and to teach children of the science and history of water, one of our most essential natural resources.
Water resources are vital to the health and well-being of our society…..even here in Louisiana, where water is often taken for granted. Water is a life sustaining non-renewable resource. As water quality and conservation issues continue to grow it is important that our children learn how they can contribute to its wise use and protection. These 250 plus 4th graders, 24 educators and 40 volunteer high schools students gathered on the shores of Caney Lake, gained critical knowledge of water and other natural resources and some basic components of resource conservation and management. This knowledge was acquired through structured learning stations and exhibits where students actively engaged in hands-on water activities and investigations. Student groups rotated from one activity station to the next where activities included topics such as the hydrologic cycle, ground water, watersheds, soils, water quality and the Sparta Aquifer.
Each teacher and student left the festival with a commemorative bag containing useful educational items including journals for the students to record their experiences and knowledge gained from each of the activities. All educators who attended this festival strongly agree that these Project WET activities expose children to the important subject of resource conservation in a way that both compliments and reinforces traditional classroom learning. That, in itself, is fun and exciting. There is no question of the vast enjoyment the students receive from this type of activity participation.
The activity presenters at the event were from the Boeuf River, Caddo, Calcasieu, D’Arbonne, Dugdemona, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Northeast & Sabine Soil & Water Conservation Districts, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Trailblazer RC&D, Northeast Delta RC&D, the La. Dept of Agriculture & Forestry, FFA and 4-H students and teachers from Jackson parish and many very helpful Earth Team volunteers.
The Dugdemona SWCD gives it heartfelt thanks to the sponsors of this event. Our sponsors are the Caldwell Parish Police Jury, the Winn Parish Police Jury, Weyerhaeuser Company, Northeast Delta RC&D, Caldwell Bank & Trust, Jackson Parish Farm Bureau, Bank of Winnfield, P.K. Smith Motors and the Louisiana Loggers Association.

What is Make a Splash?
Make a Splash with Project WET is the largest nationwide day of water education in the world. It is celebrated across the United States with water festivals, which are educational, fun, and interactive water celebrations where students explore a diversity of water-related topics.
When is Make a Splash?
Make a Splash is an adventure for our 4th graders and is held annually. The Festival usually takes place in October at Jimmie Davis State Park in Chatman, Louisiana. We have had to move the festival March due to hurricane activity before but we will keep you updates as festival time nears.
What is a water festival?
Water festivals consist of multiple structured learning stations where students actively engage in hands-on water activities and investigations. Station topics include the hydrologic cycle, ground water, spring water, water quality, wetlands, water management, water conservation, soils, and the properties of water.
What topics are addressed?
Each festival is unique, addressing a theme of local importance. Subjects that are typically addressed include the hydrologic cycle, ground water, spring water, water quality, wetlands, water management, water conservation, soils, living history and more. Water festivals, like all Project WET activities, teach children about an important topic in a manner that's fun and exciting.
The water festival as an educational tool
Make a Splash with Project WET Water Festivals are designed to emphasize water education principles within a fun, interactive environment. Unlike traditional "look and leave" field trips, Project WET Water Festivals provide a solid educational framework for teachers and students.
Pre- and post-festival activities and creative assessments are included in materials provided to all participating teachers to reinforce the lessons from the festival. While grounded in water science principles, water festivals also promote multidisciplinary approaches to learning by incorporating social studies, geography, language arts and art.
Festivals are widely used to deliver factual, up-to-date information on a variety of water-related topics to both students and adults. The hands-on, interactive learning stations are designed to reach students with diverse learning styles, including those who may struggle in a traditional classroom setting. Local water resource experts are used as instructors at the water festival stations, creating bridges between teachers, students and local experts that often result in follow-up visits. When outdoor sites are used as the water festival setting students develop a connection with that natural area, often leading them to revisit the site with their parents or on their own.
Festival Goals
1. Students will learn about water topics of concern in our community by participating in hands-on activities that fulfill state science and social studies standards.
2. Students will explore key water science concepts in a fun and interactive environment.
3. Students will celebrate and learn about water in all its forms.
4. Students will meet, learn from, and be inspired by members of our local water science community.
5. Students will explore the four types of wetlands found in our region.
6. Students will learn about the importance of ground water in our community.
Festival Objectives
At the conclusion of this festival students will:
-
draw a picture of the hydrologic cycle and describe each part
-
define a watershed
-
explain the difference between surface water and ground water
-
explain how the world shares water
-
explain the major water issues in the community
The Make a Splash Project WET Water Festival hosted by the Dugdemona SWCD and is for all 4th Grade students in Caldwell, Jackson and Winn Parishes.
We invite all local media to the event as well as each of our sponsors, local legislators and local public officials to join us the day of the festival.
