M97 Green win 2011 US Club WA Cup
Congratulations to M97 Green for winning the US Club WA Cup. The final was a hard fought game against SSC Elite from Spokane. The score was 1-1 after regulation time. Aaron had scored a goal in the dying minutes to bring M97 level and take the game to over time. The team that scored first would win the championship. Within a few minutes of the start of OT M97 continued their momentum and attacked relentlessly. After barely 2 minutes Mike played a through ball to Jasper who calmly beat a defender and slotted the ball into the goal for the Championship.
The tournament win gives the team automatic entry into the Santa Clara Invitational in August.
Congratulations to Coach Jon Mats, Jackson, Ian, Mac, Rahul, Luca, Connor, Parker, Noah, Mike, Reid, Aaron, Raj and Jasper.

White Team October 23 Match
On a sometimes wet Saturday late afternoon match the White Team gave Coach Frank Barton a 3-1 Birthday present victory. After adjusting to the quick pitch the team settled into match by forwards Blake Hudacek and Kanai Watson getting hold of the ball and releasing quickly to their supporting midfield teammates. Central Midfielders Spencer Cook and Trevor Mello began to receive balls from the forwards and deftly getting ball to Leon Bormann and Cole Thompson on the wings. At the ten minute mark the boys began to tilt the field towards the Blue Arrows half of the field.
The back line of Kevin Musar on the left, Carson Jones on the right and central backs Benjamin Smolen and Josh Vadja pushed their line higher to keep the ball from not worrying Goalkeeper Brennan Lebo too much. The back four constantly won balls to keep the Blue Arrows pinned in their defensive half. After inserting a few strategic substituion into the match, Sam Smolen into central midfield and Omar Haddouch on left side of midfield, the team broke thru. After a good stretch of pressure, Co-Captain Josh Vadja curled in a 25 yard free kick to the near post. Following the first goal the team did not let up.
Both Carson Jones on the right and Kevin Musar on the left jumped balls as they were being cleared and on one of such plays Kevin, instead of passing ball up the line, cut inside, pushed thru some attempted challenges and hammered a shot into the back of the net. Half time could not come quickly enough for a gutty but frayed Blue Arrows.
The start of the second half saw Coach Frank experiment with using Trevor and Spencer as forwards in order to give Blake and Kanai a break. The flow of the game stayed the same with EC keeping the Blue Arrows on their heels. The team began to " bring the ball down and play" as Coach Frank instructed them to. Close on a few chances the team finally broke thru again after attaining a free kick just outside of box. This time the other Co-Captain, Spencer, beat the goal keeper with a well struck shot to the near post. The team continued to pressure but the Blue Arrows broke thru on a well concucted counterattack. A good win by team to keep their winning ways in the Championship league.
Weekend round-up
Congratulations to both Green and White teams for the wins this weekend. ECFC M97 Green sits second in the PSPL Super League division, while ECFC M97 White is a decisive first place holder in the Championship division.
This weekend the Green team played CB United and won 4-1.The boys came out ready to play, despite having any subs and missing the regular goalie. Both Reid and Parker stepped up to play in goal. Great job boys!! The mid field and defense were solid, thwarting CB United’s attacks. M97 Green played a controlled game and took their chances regularly throughout the game. The first goal came from a free kick by Raj and the second a penalty by Jasper. Coach Jon was pleased with all the players efforts in the first half, giving them words of wisdom during the halftime talk which resulted in a concrete second half performance to seal the game. Both second half M97 Green goals were results of good team play. Well done boys!!

2010 Puma Pacific Coast Challenge
Well done to all that played in the PCC this weekend. The team came away with some positive play to take into the Fall PSPL and Champions League season. All three group games were very close and the team showed improvement as the tournament progressed. Great goal by Aaron in the last group game. He dribbled the ball from the back and caught the opposing teams midfield and defense napping, as he slotted the ball in the back of the net in the first 5 minutes of the game. ECFC M97 goal keeper, Jackson, also had a great tournament, making vital saves to keep the games close. The team's players, coaches and parents stayed at the WWU dorms this weekend, another great team building experience!! Lets go ECFC M97!!

Spring Season Kicks Off!
M97 Green kicked off the spring season with a two nil victory over the Whatcom FC Rangers. Playing on the Rangers home field M97 Green had their first game on grass in quite a while. The field was soft but in good condition.
In the first half ECFC opened up in total control keeping the ball in the Rangers half for the first 15 to 20 minutes. But the slow field turned the tide a bit in the last 10 minutes of the half with a few serious threats by the Rangers. However, the half ended scoreless.
The second half opened strong for ECFC and this time they continued to dominate possession. Strong play by the back line and midfield kept ECFC in control, but the Rangers showed the ability to counter attack if given the opportunity. As the second half developed it became clear that the right side could be exploited with Michael Leshchyshyn consistently winning the side and taking the ball deep into the right corner. After several threatening crosses Michael punched a shot from deep on the right into the side netting.
The Rangers responded with several strong attacks. Jackson Whitaker responded well with a number of saves including a overhead finger tip slap that dropped on the goal line and was quickly covered up by Jackson. That brought the loudest cheer of the day from the sidelines.
ECFC continued the offensive pressure and iced the game with a goal by Quentin Chi on an assist by Benjy Nurick.
Great game Green!

ECFC M95 Green’s, Peace Brandons Region IV ODP Championships experience
The Region 4 Championships were held this year in Phoenix, Arizona, January 14th to 17th. This was one of the best soccer experiences I have ever had. To qualify for this tournament as a player we had to participate in the EPD pool trainings, where all the players picked for the pool to begin with come together to train. The coaches then pick the players that they want for the 18 to be on the traveling roster. We needed to pay for the uniforms and the trip itself, have a few more trainings just with the 18, and then we were set to go. Everyone arrived at the airport in the black ODP polo, khakis, and clean running shoes. Once we arrived in Arizona, we got settled in, and got our room assignments. We only had one light training throughout the whole tournament, the rest of the time we were playing games. I played right back the whole tournament. It was very hot during the day (and snowing in Seattle!), and cold at nights. I loved it.
We ended up winning the whole tournament, beating Cal North 4-0 in the finals. I would have to say our toughest game was against Utah, which was 1-0 and we scored in the 44th minute off of a penalty kick. We also beat New Mexico, Arizona, and tied Colorado. Overall, it was the best soccer tournament that I have been to in my soccer career to date, and I hope to soon play there again. I am thrilled to have been a part of the team.
Peace plays for Bobby Howe on ECFC M95 Green.

Great turnout for Emerald City FC and PSPL Special Topics Event with National Clinician Jeff Tipping
(November 16, 2011 Seattle, WA.) Emerald City FC was proud to host NSCAA Master Coach, Jeff Tipping on Tuesday, November 15 at Ingraham High School for the kick off of the new PSPL Coaching Education Initiative, "PSPL Special Topics" that will feature twice monthly open coaching education sessions. Coach Tipping ran his session on "Developing strikers for elite youth teams" in front of a crowd of about 50 coaches from around the Puget Sound region as well as a large number of Emerald City FC parents, players and staff. In all, over 100 people attended the event and were treated to some great insights on training attacking players.
This event highlights Emerald City FC's commitment to education and I was extremely pleased to see a good representation from our club of not only coaches, but players and parents as well. This caps a great week of continuing education for the club with our first Parent Education and open Q & A event last Sunday evening at Arena Sports at Magnuson Park. This was also a successful event with great dialog between the parents, coaches and board members in attendance. We will continue to hold monthly Parent Education and Open Q & A meetings and will also post the schedule for the PSPL Special Topics events on our club website to provide additional opportunities for all of our members to continue to learn about the game throughout the year.
I am excited by the way these events are bringing our club members together, helping to strengthen our bond as a club and developing more of a sense of community and culture around the game in Seattle. Thank you to all who have attended these events!

"Misty Acres was great, I definitely want to go back next year ..." (Leon B. from M97 Green) One of the many positive comments received from players that attended the second annual ECFC Residential Camp at Misty Acres, Union,WA.
This year Emerald City FC coaches held separate camps for both girls and boys. The first session was for the boys and the coaching staff designed the camp to help players prepare for the upcoming fall league season.
The second session was for the girls, and this was the first time Emerald City FC held a camp for girls. To this end the coaches constructed a special schedule for the girls in order to prepare them for the intense high school soccer tryouts and high school soccer season.
Many activities were also added to both weeks of the camps this year that helped players learn to work together on and off the field. One of the most popular, was the ropes course, where players had to help each other through a rope wall. Similar to last years camp, each meal was prepared by the players for themselves and the coaches, with different players preparing meals each day. Between activities and practices, players took advantage of the camp's facilities, playing table tennis, pool and taking nature walks exploring the camps surroundings.
Emerald City FC would like to specifically thank Ruth Nicholson and Jody Bauder for recruiting 15 parent volunteers to help organize resources, supplies and food for each camp. Volunteers like Ruth, Jody and the other parents of Emerald City FC continue to make the club a success on and off the pitch.
Some stats from the camps
- camp attendance increased by over 30% this year
- volunteer participation increased by 3 fold
- each camp session had at least 4 coaches present each week, a ratio of about 1 coach for every 8 players

Former ECFC player, George John opts to stay with FC Dallas

After days of speculation, former Emerald City FC player, George John, has opted to stay at FC Dallas and not move on to the English Premier League team, Blackburn Rovers. George, who also was an outstanding player for the University of Washington, has spent the last couple of weeks in talks with the EPL and his current team FC Dallas, in order to get the move approved before the EPL transfer window closed. Unfortunately the deal fell through and George returns to FC Dallas to finish out this years MLS season and his current contract. Reports indicate that Blackburn is still interested in George and are looking to resume talks next season. George John and FC Dallas will be playing against the Seattle Sounders FC today, Tuesday 8/30 in the US Open Cup.
