Cita's Birthday Bash
We flew to Little Rock AR to help Cita celebrate her 70th birthday at the Clinton Library. It was fabulous, as was the brunch the next day and the island theme party Saturday night. See the photos under the Travels tab at the top!
Catawba Falls
Fall 2011 photos have Catawba Falls, in Old Fort, which is 15 minutes away--used to have a private property entrance so we never went. Now it is open to the public. We didn't have good enough shoes to make it to the top, but it was quite a lovely area.
Also under travels I have the photos of our visit to FL to see Ed's folks for his and his mom's birthday. And our remodel of the house!
Check out the tab at the top for travels
Our Oregon photos are under the travel tab at the top of the page. Ed retired on June 30th and we flew to Oregon to visit with his Navy buddy, Mike McGuire and Carla, then rented a car and did the coast. Stopped in Florence to see Judi, whom we knew in St. Thomas when we all used to charter. A great trip!
Summer blossoms and deer
We are getting so much more wildlife now! And the rains of spring have brought a massive bloom to my summer garden, this solstice day! The pond iris were spectacular as well, earlier in the month. Heaven on earth, that is Eco Cove!
Greek night at Eco Cove House
Greek Night at Eco Cove House
Yogurt cucumbers
1 cucumber, cut in half, peeled, seeded and julienned
1 small red onion, julienned
3 T vanilla Greek yogurt (or plain with 1 T. sugar—but you want the thick Greek kind)
½ tsp. sea salt
¼ fresh ground black pepper
1/3 c. rice wine vinegar
Mix and refrigerate while you make:
Tomato/Kalamata relish
12 cherry tomatoes, sliced
10 pitted Kalamata olives, chopped
2 T. extra-virgin or Greek olive oil
2 Thin-sliced green onions
¼ red bell pepper, diced
2 T. chopped parsley
Sea salt (to taste)
Mix and refrigerate while you make:
Greek Chicken:
2 C. thin sliced chicken, or lamb
2 T. Greek olive oil
1 T. Greek seasoning
½ tsp. ground black pepper
3 T. Mediterranean feta cheese
2 T. crushed pistachios if you have them
Whole wheat pita pockets, wraps, or flour tortillas!
Sautée the meat in oil with the Greek seasoning and pepper. Lightly toast the pita, wrap, or tortilla to heat it, scoop in meat, feta, nuts, relish and cucumbers and enjoy—shouting Opa! And enjoying a glass of red wine…
Fall is on its way
A slight nip in the air and we know fall is on its way. The crocus are open and we had European starlings swarm our dogwood tree--first time ever and quite a treat.
Pond Party and Amanda and Dan's wedding
The pond party was a success, even though it rained most the day! Great food and company, then Sidestreet played at night and we all danced (some in the rain) and enjoyed ourselves.
Lyric's roommate in college at UNC (1 of 5) got married nearby and we were invited to the celebration! Great fun, with the girls all in cowgirl boots!
More wildlife visits
July has been busy with turkeys (3 behind Eco Cove House) hummingbirds, hawks, herons, and deer visiting our cove. We have also had 3 rentals in July--a record and delight. All great folks. Pond party is in the near future and we hope to see you. It has been a hotter summer, but the continuous flowers have made up for the temperature!
Summer showers and gifts
Not only do we have a parade of unending colors, we have the largest bumper crop of blackberries ever--that snowy winter must have been what they call a blackberry winter! Just a few plants gave us over 6 cups of ripe berries. We had a lightening strike right next to the house yesterday (we were on the porch, listening to the thunder god roar) but luckily it didn't hurt anything electrical. Ed saw the bolt hit as a ball of fire, and we heard a "pop" like a light bulb blowing, before the boom and crack. About an hour's heavy rain as well!
Summer in the cove
All of the hot color blossoms are opening, the koi are getting bigger, the birds are singing, and life is good at Eco Cove. The whippoorwill sings in the morning and at dusk, the crows sound like jungle birds in answer, and the hummingbirds are drinking from the bee balm. Lightening bugs flash over the grass and summer is here. Time to break out the floats for after work pond relaxation!
Turkey time and flower power
Such excitement on Mother's Day--a turkey came right up to the porch while I was hand painting leaves on boards--no fear! Ed gave me my camera through the window and I got some shots. A hummingbird came by and I snapped it too! The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, and life is good at Eco Cove. We think we may even get a lotus blossom, which has not happened in four years. Check out the spring flowers album for the ones on our driveway, and the new Eco Cove House May flowers I just added.
April 30th, my birthday
I can't keep up with the photos of all the beautiful flowers coming into bloom. It has been a spectacular year with all the cold and then turning warm quickly. It's 80 today, clear and sunny, and a great day to appreciate being born! I am so glad I am here to revel in this beauty and life.
FIRST DAY OF SPRING!
It has been a long winter but spring has finally arrived with flowers beginning to open and koi feeding in the pond and Winston, the cat who adopted us this fall, loving sunshine and lolling in the grass. We have constant duck visitors on the pond eating the corn from the swim float. Raccoons are hitting my compost bin again, so I guess I'll give that up for awhile. It's been in the 70's but turning colder...the almanac says we have one more snow to go. I hope not!
Snow Snow Snow--and celebrations!
We've had some snow on the ground since December 18th and today is March the 10th! In the 19 years we have been here, you'd have to combine them all to equal what we received this year. It is lovely as the photos show, but we're ready for spring. The crocus and snowdrops are poking up in my garden and it's been in the 60's the past few days.
We celebrated Crazy Alice's birthday here (flew her in from Colorado) with Pauline Franko from Florida--we have been friends for 34 years, since we arrived in the VI and met these fabulous women.
I also celebrated International Women's Day on March 8th with girlfriends and Ed, doing a "Meet me at the bridge" which Women for Women (Lyric's employer) was doing world wide. It was great, and I had wine and cheese for everyone afterward.
I just joined Facebook so am posting photos there as well. Hope you are all warm and happy~
Snow Snow Snow!
The previous snow lasted on the ground a month in shadows, and was followed by two more since! Ed dug the weekend snowfall out with the tractor, but when the 3rd one fell last Thursday, we had to stay home on Friday. The rains on Friday mellowed it out enough so that we could get out on Saturday to go to Charlotte and see, get this, Spring Awakening! Worth the trip. I have just a few photos to post soon--been busy working on my new Facebook page now that the college allows it. Ed's ready for spring as are the cats (got a new adoptee) and dog.
December 18th Snowfall & Christmas 2009
We got 8 1/2" of snow and it was fabulous. The most snow since the blizzard of '93! Luckily, Ed had a scraper for the tractor and was able to plow our drive from the lower road (in 5 1/2 hours) so that Lyric was able to make it home on Sunday! We had a great week together before she had to return to D.C. We went to movies, had friends over, baked breads and made rum balls, went shopping, went to the gingerbread display at the Grove Park Inn, had had wonderful visits with friends. Wish we could have seen all of you! Hope you all had a marvelous Christmas!
October 25, 2009 fall walk in our woods
Fall is my second favorite season and it is beautiful here this year. Ed saw a turkey out front, and 12 mallards in the pond. Pepper joined us for a walk in our woods and the radiance of the deep blue sky and sunshine made the whole forest glow. Spectacular!
New England for Ed's birthday
We flew into Boston, rented a car, and drove to Salem to spend the night with our good friend, Richard. He took us on a tour of the town and the Witch Museum (good time of year to visit with all the Halloween decorations!). Then next day we went to Boothbay Maine--my favorite stop on the trip. Lyric and I shared two full lobsters at McSeagulls in Boothbay for $38.00! That was a fabulous dinner--Ed's seafood extravaganza was stacked with lobster, shrimp and scallops and the crab cakes appetizer was accompanied by a delicious salad. From there we drove north to Camden so Ed could visit Satori's designer's old haunt and try to get his fill of schooners. That was an action packed day ending up in North Conway. The drive across the White Mountains the next morning was fall at its peak, even on a rainy day. It was Ed's birthday, and after a great lunch in Woodstock VT, we went on to Brattleboro, VT, to stay at a beautiful B&B, the Meadowlark. Dinner at Peter Haven's was another high point.
Mystic CT and the Seaport Museum (and the best lunch of the trip at the S&P Oyster House) took our afternoon the following day, and we pushed on to Bristol RI so Ed could see the Herreshoff America's Cup Museum the next morning, where we spent four hours reliving the J boat history. That afternoon took us to Cape Cod and our most expensive lunch (lobster rolls, 3 drinks and 1 dessert for $111.00!
We drove through Plymouth to see the rock, then on to Boston where we arrived late. The next morning our good friends from St. Thomas, Steve & June arrived. We did a trolley tour of Boston, ending up at John Kennedy's favorite Oyster House (oldest restaurant in U.S. still in operation) for a great dinner. Back to Quincy Market for desserts--the perfect end to the vacation.
Another bear on the porch this morning! I put the photos in 07/2009
The junior member of the local bear family seems to have been told to find his own food. I didn't see mom or the twin cubs today, but the yearling came up on the porch this morning while I was sitting by the window reading and stood looking about for food. He looked at Barney's outdoor cage (luckily the parrot was in the house) then the window. I grabbed the camera and shot. Photos are in the workbench album because the earlier bear photos are there, as well as I was adding shots of the finished workbench to that album! As he looked at me, trying to figure out what I was behind the window I said, "What are you doing here?" and he ran off. Skinny little guy! But good size and looked healthy.
Lyric and friends
Lyric, Lee, Mariah, Lindsey, Hailey, Rachel, Kyle, Marissa, Colleen, and Seke all came from DC or NYC for a weekend of relaxation, floating, eating and playing. Dalmar joined us as he was visiting Asheville and a friend of Marissa, and Turner and Richard and Linda came over on Saturday. I had decided on not doing a pond party this year with Ed's health iffy when I normally send out invites. Luckily, he is doing well and we had a great weekend with these amazing young folks. Mariah and Lindsey drove across country to be here, on the way back to UNC Medical School. Seke is on his way to Harvard Business School and Dalmar is at Chicago Divinity School. Most work for foundations or non-profits. Lee works for Congressman Butterfield (D-NC).
Lyric had her first interview as a Women for Women representative last week, which we saw online. She did a great job.
Summer at Eco Cove
The drought has finally ended and it is absolutely beautiful at Eco Cove. The Koi are also getting very tame and coming for a feeding whenever we show up on the dock! There are some photos of them and the bear that visited in spring under the work detail photo book--I was learning on putting these into place! The flowers are in wild color and abundance, as is evident by the most current photos. I hope you enjoy them.
Turkey adoption day
The turkey that visited last year off and on seems to have taken up residence now, and shows no fear when I drive by her (?). We are hoping for a nest and babies and have started putting out corn. It came right up to the porch on mother's day. There is a great blue heron visiting the pond, looking for koi (the babies seem pretty smart and the big ones are way too big for him) and the pileated woodpecker has been making the rounds (I love their cry!). Crows find us a fun place to live as well.
The azaleas and iris are rounding up an amazing display, and peonies are on the rise...spring is so much my very favorite time of year. I had a first blossom on a tree peony this year--hot pink and lovely! Day lilies are coming up like mad so it should be a fabulous continuation of color.
Spring is around the corner
The peepers are singing their soprano song, accompanied by the bass-toned red frogs all night long in the pond in front of the house. Hundreds of them! And my front lawn is a carpet of crocus, mostly lavender but a few dark purple and yellow ones as well. Off in the shade garden the snowdrops shyly bow their blossomed heads, and the Lenten Rose pushes up new blossoms ready to greet the warmer weather. Spring is 8 days away, and we are ready for the warm sun to greet our days!
koi in the pond
Yesterday I noticed that the koi had babies!! I counted 100 of them hiding along the side, under the brambles. Some of them are still very dark in color so there may be more I missed. They range in size from 2-3", with the longer ones showing colors of white and orange. The big koi are 22 in number, and still eating on warm days like yesterday--77 degrees when we got home from Charlotte. The water is cool but not cold yet so they are sluggish at first, and then pick up the pace once the feeding begins. We never understood why we didn't have little ones--so glad to see them!
Turkeys wandering in time for Thanksgiving!
We've had 3 turkeys in our driveway in the past few days and they are very low key, slowing walking and feeding as long as you go slow in the car! We had 1 all spring, so we are delighted she's brought her friends to visit. We just started putting out corn now to keep them happy. We had 12 ducks on the pond this weekend, too. The koi are not eating much, as I guess the water temperature is slowing them down. It was one of the prettiest falls ever at Eco Cove.
Raccoons are back
Forgot the feeder again and at 4am we had 2 raccoons back for breakfast, chattering and reaching for the feeder. One is on the post, and then climbing the table saw for cat food--which was all gone. Even when we turned on the light, one stayed for more food attempts. I had difficulty remembering how to change the iso to 1600 so didn't get any great shots--but I'll be ready next time!
Wildlife at Eco Cove
I awoke to a repeated thunk from the front porch and went to investigate: a huge raccoon was swinging on the bird feeder (which we forgot to take in the previous night) and dropped to the porch, gobbling up seed and running away before I could reach my camera. We've had box turtles in the driveway, a rare treat since Old Yeller used to drown them in the creek and eat them. He's been dead for years, yet the turtles are only now making a comeback. A large deer crossed the road in front of Ed last week. We haven't seen any ducks or the resident turkey in over a week, but the crows and squirrels are loving the corn we put out. The Koi are getting closer to eating from our hands. We had a great rental last week, and the folks loved the pond. They have had Koi as well, and encouraged us to keep trying to get them to come closer. They never would come for food until the ducks eating corn and knocked it into the water. That started the Koi's schooling for food!
5/1/2010 8:25:02 PM - kizzylu3@...
Happy Birthday, dear friend!! So happy to hear that everything is
coming up roses (as it were) and then some! These newly blooming
spring flowers hide their beauty during the colder months, and then
take their cue to explode into riotous color when the warm weather
invites them to emerge into their fullness. You, on the other hand, my
dear, choose to radiate your beauty all year through. The cold chill
that old man winter brings cannot touch you, for you are lit from
within, wrapped in a warmth of spirit from good seeds that you have
planted all through your life, which have been watered by your tears
when needed, and rooted in the fertile soil of your earthly and
grounded mind. Celebrate away, Gabrielle, for another year beckons
you!

As one of the lucky few who got to attend the EcoCove weekend hosted by Ed and Gabrielle for Lyric & Co., I can't say enough about their home and hospitality! What a beautiful place. The pond and surrounding woodlands are a peaceful escape from everything. The guest house we stayed in is tucked away in its own little enclave, surrounded by pretty gardens. It has a luxurious master bedroom (with jacuzzi) and a pretty side porch overlooking a small private lawn, perfect for sitting out on and watching the fireflies. Ed and Gabrielle are the most gracious hosts and have a treasure trove of stories from their years running a charter boat in the Virgin Islands. And of course I can't forget the last member of the family - their talking parrot Barnacle Bill! He also has many stories to tell from his days as their shipmate in the Virgin Islands :) What a character, he’ll greet you with a “good morning, ahoy matey!” but it doesn’t stop there – he has a musical routine too if you can coax it out of him.
Ed and Gabrielle, thank you again for such a wonderful few days away from it all!

Help! I added an album and it ended up in the featured spot and I don't know how to undo it! Gabrielle, I'm hoping that you will be able to move things around as you please. Feel free to slap me around the next time you see me.

Oh, this really makes me miss you even more than i did before. It is good to see Ed looking well.

Just in from a recent guest:
We recently spent an extended weekend at Eco-
Cove. We had an absolutely fantastic time. The
house is wonderful. Very cozy and we instantly
settled in. It really felt like home. The grounds
were wonderful as well. Very peaceful. The kids
LOVED swimming with the koi in the pond. Another
few days and they would have been eating from our
hands! We got to do some great hiking/exploring
as the house is close to several trails, waterfalls,
etc.
Finally, Gabrielle and Ed were fantastic hosts. Great
company as well. We loved the Island stories. Very
interesting. We hope to spend some time back at
Eco-Cove again soon. Thanks Gabrielle and Ed!

I loved the "Work Detail" photos...great picture of Barney! Haven't seen a photo of him for a long time!
Also love your whole website. Does this mean no more emails? Or will you still answer them? (Can't send jokes to this site!)
Are we supposed to put a photo on here where our name is?
Love, Waldy
