This Edgewood College student poses for a photo outside the Admissions Office on the 2nd floor of DeRicci Hall.

Two students act naturally as they pose of a staged photo in an unidentified residence hall. Although the picture is allegedly staged, the laughs appear to be authentic.

A not so common view of the Predolin Humanities Center and DeRicci Hall from the top of the Sonderegger Science Center.
Look no further than the courtyard behind Predolin and DeRicci for inspiration.

And if there's an art exhibit inside, so much the better.

It rained most of the day today and was generally dark and yucky. Nice weather for octopi.
Doesn't mean a person can't sit in the car and play with the camera. This was outside Octopus Car Wash on South Park Street, Two exposures, two different lenses, blended in-camera with Nikon's Image Overlay. One shot wide open with the 50mm to focus on the raindrops on the windshield and throw the background out of focus and produce the bokeh highlights. The octopus was photographed with a tele-zoom at 120mm.

And it towers 26 feet high in the Hilldale atrium across from Macy's. It's all in a good cause. It will be the centerpiece of the Gingerbread Casas for CASA event this Saturday afternoon, Nov. 21, to benefit CASA of Dane County. Madison-area companies are invited to participate in a gingerbread house or “casa” decorating competition. They were putting on the frosting tonight, buckets and buckets of it.

But I don't think it's the politicians as much as the developers and their allies

I'm kind of a fan of our local lakes. I support efforts to protect them, and no amount of hysterical propaganda from pro-development groups is going to change my mind.

Here's a bit of color after all that dreariness. I could call these holiday lights, but they weren't really. I thought I had the autofocus on. And a faster shutter speed. But I didn't.

The real visual here was was the grass waving in the wind, which I couldn't really capture in a still. So I made a video filled with November moodiness for all the Scorpios out there who have birthdays this dark and gloomy month. I tried to post the video on Flickr, but they cut off the end because it was longer than 90 seconds. So you'll have to see it at my blog or at YouTube.
The audio is Art of Noise's "Opus 4." The lyrics are drawn from the 1844 poem, "No!," by Thomas Hood. They stripped away some of the 19th century ornateness. Here's what they kept:
No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -
No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day.
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member -
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -
November!
The "no bees" gets me every time..

President Obama's ambassador to Afghanistan seems to think so, too.
In a leaked cable to Washington sent last week, the US ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl W Eikenberry, argued that it would be a mistake to send reinforcements until the government of Hamid Karzai demonstrates that it will act against corruption and mismanagement. Mr Eikenberry knows what he is talking about because he has long experience of Afghanistan. A recently retired three-star general, he was responsible for training the Afghan security forces from 2002 to 2003 and was top US commander in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2007.
Patrick Cockburn, writing in The Independent, explains why the word "corruption" is a major understatement when it comes to the Afghan government, and why the U.S. and Britain should not continue to support that government militarily.
