The Aftermath
2010-01-15
A 23 Hour Vacation
Yesterday I went with Irene, a volunteer who's here for a few weeks, on a day trip to Agra. We decided to take a bus tour, since it was cheaper than the train and they would take us to all the sights. We got up at 4:30 am, arrived at the bus stop at 6:00 am (to catch a 6:30 bus) and finally left at 7:30. After stopping at a rest stop for breakfast, we arrived in Agra around 1:00. We had a whole half hour in which to see the enormous Agra Fort, before we were taken to a marble souvenir shop (no time limit there!). We ate a tasty lunch at a local restaurant and then headed to the Taj Mahal at about 4:30. It was a beautiful evening - the sky was full of dark clouds with the sun trying to set behind them. I could have stayed for hours, but we had to leave at 6:00 to continue on our journey. On the way back from Agra to Delhi, we stopped in both Mathura and Vrindavan. In Mathura we had half an hour to visit the birthplace of Krishna. Then in Vrindavan they took us on a mini-tour of the city...by this time it's 11pm. It's dark. Nothing is open, except one temple, where the priests kindly asked us to make a donation so that we could have our names engraved on stones and put up on the temple walls. I kindly declined. We finally arrived back in Delhi at 3:00 am, and got back to the house at 3:30. I was tired. This was a new experience for me. It wasn't bad, but I think I've learned my lesson. Next time - take the train.
Escape from Anupshahr: Paris-Brugge-Brussels-Leiden-The Hague-Sheveningen-Connelles-Givenchy-les Andyles-Paris-Dubai
I just returned from a 2 week “summer vacation” with Emma and her mom and brother in Europe. We had a wonderful time and I especially enjoyed having a break. I saw lots of art, ate lots of pastries and loved the cool weather. Emma and I flew in to Paris and met her mom and brother Ross there, and Megan stopped by to see us on her way to Amsterdam. In Paris we: went to the Opera House, went to the Musee D’Orsay, saw Notre Dame, went on a boat ride, explored the Louvre, walked in the gardens at Versailles (in the rain), looked up at the Arc du Triomphe and ate a lot. Busy huh? Next we drove to Mont-St.-Michel and didn’t make it in time to see the abbey, but we wandered around a bit (again in the rain). From there we went to our hotel in Rouen, saw the cathedral, and moved on. The next stop was Brugge, Belgium. In Brugge we: saw the town square, climbed up the bell tower, went on a canal cruise, saw an exhibit on Charles the Bold, and toured a chocolate museum (yum). After Brugge, we drove to Brussels and: looked at art, visited the Grand Place, ate tasty gyros, walked around the EU, got lost on a walking tour of Art Nouveau houses, and did a little shopping. The next stop was a town called Leiden in the Netherlands. We drove to The Hague and saw the Peace Palace, then drove to the coast to a town called Sheveningen, which I cannot pronounce. But it was nice and we walked along the beach and saw whimsical and giant and tiny statues. The last place we stayed was a tiny tiny town called Connelles that wasn’t even on the map. But we drove to Givenchy and saw Claude Monet’s house and beautiful gardens. We spent the afternoon driving to different small towns in the area, and enjoying the lovely weather. Then on our last day in Paris (our plane didn’t leave till 10:00 pm) Emma and I wandered in the Luxembourg gardens and I bought a cheeseburger that cost €15 (it was a tough decision to make…Emma convinced me to do it) but it was tasty. I didn’t sleep much on the overnight flight to Dubai, but managed to stay awake all day. Emma and I had an 8 hour layover, so we took a taxi to the Atlantis Hotel, right at the tip top of the Palm Jumeirah, where we ogled at everything – the giant sculpture in the lobby, the ridiculous paintings on the ceiling, the fish in the aquarium. I stuck my toes in the Arabian Sea! We went to the Mall of the Emirates and saw the indoor ski slope. We did not, however, go to the biggest mall in the world…And now I’m back in India and headed back to Anupshahr tonight and back to school on Monday!
Invisible Theatre
This week I attended a five day workshop on Participatory Theatre in Delhi where we studied Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. There were two facilitators and seven participants. All the other participants were Indian, so most of the workshop was in Hindi. I tried to understand as much as I could and people translated for me also. It was a great experience for me! I’d learned a bit about Theatre of the Oppressed at school, but never participated in it. Basically there are five forms, all of them intending to bring about some social change, and they all involve the participation of those who would be the audience.
The two forms of theatre we actually did were Invisible Theatre and Forum Theatre. Our Invisible Theatre piece was on littering, which is a huge problem here. We divided into small groups and went out into a market in Delhi. The two people in the first group bought some snacks and threw their trash on the ground. Then my partner and I went up to them and asked why they’d thrown their trash on the ground when there was a trash can so close by. A crowd started gathering and the last group of us joined in. The shopkeepers and the shoppers were all talking and arguing and discussing it. It was great! Of course, I don’t speak enough Hindi to know what exactly they were saying, but I could tell that they were interested. We did this three times in different markets close by.
On the last day we performed our Forum Theatre piece in Old Delhi, just across from Jama Masjid. When we started singing and clapping to get people’s attention to come see the show, we mostly just attracted a crowd of kids. But then when we began a big crowd gathered and watched the show. It was a play we’d come up with called Khushiram ke Talash (Khushiram’s Search) about a man named Khushiram and his family. They are forced to move out of their village when the government builds a dam that floods the area, so they move into the city in a slum and Khushiram gets a job as a rickshaw driver. Then the government bulldozes the slum because it’s an eyesore so Khushiram and his family live on the street. At the end of the play they are going to be kicked out of their home on the street so that a stadium can be built for the Commonwealth Games. At this point, members of the audience can come up and take the place of Khushiram and do what they would do if they were in that situation. It gives people a chance to voice their opinions and come up with solutions to their problems. It was amzing! I had lines in Hindi (I was the town crier, always bringing the bad news…). We sang songs and danced. We had to stop for a few minutes in the middle of the show for the call to prayer from Jama Masjid. And people were interested!
I’m going to try to work on this with some girls at school, and we’ll do shows in the nearby villages about issues like health and sanitation, girl child education, and early marriage. I think that in small places like this, and with a specific issue in mind, it can really help things. Plus, it’ll be fun!
Travel Adventures and Kitchen Duty
My friend Kendal came to visit Emma and me from Paris, so we took her traveling to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. This was our first time to travel (except for the trip to Nainital) so it was very exciting. The adventure began when we took a train from Delhi to Jaipur. We couldn’t find our car and jumped onto the train as it was pulling away. For about 20 minutes we rode standing up squished in among lots of men at the end of a 2nd class car. But at the next station we got off, ran ran ran to the other end of the train, and finally found our car. Our 2 ½ days in Jaipur were lots of fun. We went to the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Surya Mandir and we wandered around the bazaars of the Old City. Jaipur is known for its silversmiths and I bought a bunch of jewelry. From Jaipur we took a train to Agra (this time we accidentally sat in the most expensive class car, but the porter didn’t make us move). 1 ½ days in Agra was enough. On the first day we went to a tomb called Chini-ka-Rauza and to Itimad-ud-Daulah, which is my favorite. It’s a beautiful small tomb made of white marble covered with inlaid stone work. We spent quite a while there because it wasn’t crowded and there was a nice cool breeze. At the end of the day our rickshaw driver took us across the river from the Taj Mahal to see the view from the back as the sun set. There were only a few other tourists there, and a bunch of local kids who kept trying to sell us bracelets but finally left us alone. Since the river’s mostly dry we could walk out into the middle of it and see the Taj Mahal with nothing in the way – no people, no trees. On Day 2 in Agra we went to the Taj Mahal early early in the morning to avoid the heat. White marble that’s been in the sun all day can burn your feet! Luckily it was lovely weather, and we also beat the tour buses so it wasn’t too crowded either. After that we took a taxi to Fatepur Sikri, but only went to the mosque, Jama Masjid. We had a loooong dinner at a restaurant called Zorba the Buddha (very interesting) and then took a train back to Delhi. When we finally arrived at Sam’s house in Gurgaon at 12:30 am, we were given another dinner and ice cream. That made 4 ice creams in one evening for me…
Another recent adventure of mine was my day of kitchen duty at the school. The girls cook all the school meals and do all the cleaning on a rotating basis. In theory, each girl should only have to work about once a month. So last Wednesday Emma, Pranav and I decided to do kitchen duty. Lunch for the day was loki and chapattis. I started out by sifting flour and then mixing it with water to make the chapatti dough. Then when all the flour was mixed, I was put to work rolling out the chapattis. The dough has to be rolled into small balls and then flattened out with tiny rolling pins. From there they are cooked on a griddle for a few moments before being puffed up on a gas flame. I got to try all of these things and had nothing to do with the loki, except serving it onto the plates. I apparently wasn’t fast enough at that because Jyoti had to come back and keep finishing the ends of my rows as I couldn’t keep up with her. At the end of the day I was hot mostly, and just a little worn out. This was nothing like working in the kitchen at camp!
Happy Girls and Pink Hair
On Saturday the school celebrated International Women’s Day. We’d been planning for a little over a week, and I think it was a big success. The girls didn’t have to wear uniforms, so that was a lot of fun. They came to school wearing anything from jeans to leather jackets to their nicest suits. I borrowed a lovely purple sari from Shanti, which took three women twenty minutes to put on me. Then as soon as I met my girls to rehearse, they immediately began rearranging it. The morning was free time, and the girls played outside and rehearsed for the program. Any kind of celebration at Pardada Pardadi involves a (usually long) program. Saturday’s was about three hours of speeches, songs, dances, a gynecologist talking, a spelling bee, and a little bit of confusion. My girls sang the Martina McBride song “Happy Girl”. I think they did quite well! After the program they had more free time (while the men teachers cooked lunch) and some of the girls in my class did a beautiful mendhi design on my hand.
Tuesday and Wednesday are the Hindu holiday Holi. We had both days off school, so the school celebrated Holi on Monday. We let out early at 3:00 and girls began to wander out of the school. Things started out pretty calmly. A few girls had colored water in bottles and they just rubbed it on their hands and cheeks. They got Emma and me too. Then, somebody brought out the powder and the schoolyard descended into mild chaos. Emma, Judy and I seemed to be the main targets. Most of the other teachers, though, had the sense to stay inside. They’d pop out to get the token powder on their foreheads, maybe get dusted by some girls, and then they’d go back in. We stayed out and I had a ball chasing girls around. By the time they headed home on the school buses (quite a sight!), my face was completely covered and the rest of me was pretty colorful too.
Tuesday and Wednesday proved to be no less exciting, and even messier. Tuesday we just rested. We missed the Holi fire in the village, but that was alright. Sam’s sister invited the village ladies to the house, and they sat outside singing for several hours. She was offering each woman 5 rupees per dance, but they seemed a little shy. Emma and I were dragged up to dance though and so I got my 5 rupees too. Wednesday was the day everyone in the village played Holi. Some people came to the house to say hello, and we got a little colorful then, but it wasn’t until we went walking in the village that we got the full force of it. There were little boys everywhere with plastic bottles of colored water that they squirted at anyone who passed by. We were good targets because we’re Westerners and we weren’t yet too messy. So we got squirted and powdered, and were about to head home when one of the women who’d been at the house the night before led us into her courtyard. We thought she was taking us in to get away from the crowd of boys following us with water…we were wrong. They had this greenish powder that they scrubbed all over our faces. I saw Emma getting it first, and saw her teeth turn pink, so when it was my turn I kept my eyes and mouth shut tight. Back at the house we tried to wash up a bit and discovered that this green powder turns pink when mixed with water. And it does not want to wash off! I think I much prefer playing just with powder. This stuff is not as much fun, and my face stung all afternoon. My hair is still pink in the front and Emma looks like Violet Beauregard. The girls will have a good laugh when they see us at school tomorrow!
Road Trip Indian Style
This weekend Emma and I went with the teachers and staff of the school on a trip to Nainital, a hill station in the foothills of the Himalayas. It was quite an interesting experience...
We left on Saturday evening at 9:00 - about fifty teachers in two school buses. School buses are not very comfortable places to sleep, especially when you have a cold and therefore can't breathe, teachers are having singing contests, the roads are bumpy and it is COLD! So I didn't get any sleep at all on Saturday night. We arrived at the hotel in Nainital at about 5:00 Sunday morning and Trichul made us tuna sandwiches for breakfast. We all squished into jeep taxis which took us up the hills to a spot where we had a beautiful view of the Himalayas! The mountains were just amazing, even from a distance! There was a little snow on the sides of the road and everyone had fun throwing snow at each other. We saw a few more sights and went into a cave before heading back to the bus for another outing. Most of us squished onto one bus to go see another lake and eat lunch. On the way back, the bus overheated and started smoking...so we sat by the side of the road for an hour while it cooled down. In the evening Emma and Judy and Mr. Jose and I took a boat ride across Lake Naini to see the Naini Dev Mandir. It was all lit up at night! We walked back through the market and had dinner and I even bought an ice cream bar!!
On Monday we left Nainital and drove through the mountains to Ranikhet, which was another beautiful town. The drive was amazing, along a narrow windy road high up on the side of the mountain. There were all these tiny little towns nestled in among terraced hillsides. In Ranikhet we went to an old church where there was a weaving project going on. The tiny little church was full of men and women weaving on big clacking looms.
From Ranikhet we drove for ever and ever and ever. We were lost in the mountains for five hours. We were hoping we'd get out of the mountains before dark, but that didn't happen. We finally made it out of the mountains at about 10:00 pm. From there, we had to drive all the way back to Anupshahr. I got back to the house at 3:15 am. We were supposed to arrive back in Anupshahr at about 6:00 pm...so we ended up about 9 hours late. But somehow all of the teachers made it to school on Tuesday, even after having so little sleep! Overall it was quite an adventure.
Teaching
Well, I have now been teaching for two weeks and kind of have a schedule worked out. I teach English and Drama to Class 8, which is the equivalent of our 8th grade except the girls are between the ages of 12 and 17. There are two classes and I've divided each class into two groups. The A groups have the girls with the best English and the B groups have all the other girls. So on Mondays and Thursdays I teach the A groups and on Tuesdays I teach the B groups. I teach all of the girls during their regular English class time.
On Saturday mornings I teach Drama for an hour to the A girls all together. This morning was quite fun - we read and acted out Where the Wild Things Are! They had a lot of fun being Wild Things, roaring their terrible roars and gnashing their terrible teeth. I was surprised at how enthusiastic they were! I'm going to have to find some other fun short stories to act out with them. I think this really helps their English also. They can read English but usually they have no idea what they're reading. By acting things out, they learn what it means and what is happening in the story.
Emma and I are also working on organizing and cleaning up the library. When we got here, the library was a small room behind the computer lab. There was one bookshelf half-full of books. Since then our books have doubled and we've gotten some children's reference books also. Yesterday we cleared all the junk and old computer parts out of the room and tidied up so it's much more pleasant. In the next few weeks we are hopefully getting another bookshelf, and then in a few months moving to a bigger room in the school. We're going to try to make it like a real library, nice and cozy. I think they're already working on getting us some mats and cushions for the floor and we might even get to paint!
Namaste
Hello Friends!
I have finally had time to attempt to get this page set up! I'm going to try to post lots of pictures and write a little about what's going on here. Sooo...the basic info is this: For the next year I'll be teaching English to 8th class students at the Pardada Pardadi Vocational School in Anupshahar, India. Right now, Emma and I are staying at the home of Sam Singh, the man who started the school. His house is in another village called Bichola. It's a beautiful big yellow house, which right now is very cold. We've been observing classes all week and are going to begin teaching next week (I think).
So far my time here has been wonderful. We spent 2 days in Delhi resting and sightseeing before taking the 4-5 hour trip to Anupshahar. So far I've been boating on the Ganges twice, I've seen a monkey eat our geraniums, I've learned a few phrases in Hindi, I've seen a herd of goats wearing necklaces, and I've made banana bread without an oven!
Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to upload a few photos...
