Update from Karen (on March 25, 2014)
James was discharged from the hospital yesterday. We were lucky enough that a room was available at the Ronald McDonald house. It's a little scary being discharged, but the house is right across from the hospital.
James has quite a bit of pain in his head (to be expected) and it's hard to get around but he can and holds on to me for balance. Painful to eat good so I am heading out for yogurt, pudding etc. ...The left side of his head is swollen and his eye is almost completely swollen shut.
If you have to have brain surgery, it is beautiful here on the upside!!
I am trying to keep James mentally and physically prepared for the next surgery on the right side, which is prob this Wed. The scar is very big and long but most will be covered by his hair...unless he decides to join the military some day, lol. Besides James said he will have a story to tell...always trying to look on the bright side.
You never know where life will lead you and I believe there's a plan for everything, I always have. God is watching over us and will see us through this as He had done before and continues to do with all of us; God is Good.
Without trying to wax too philosophical, I have had to dig deep, call upon strength and keep my mind clear to do what's best for James. It's been a time of growth in my life when reserves were seemingly low already from events of the past couple of years. My inner constant faith that never waivers and the ongoing support from friends, family and people I don't even know have helped us through.
James teaches me everyday. Our kids can always teach us, but at times like this it's threefold. His trudging through this, his patience, bravery, his will to get better are truly amazing qualities to witness. He helps me, tells me to calm down when I need to.. Leans over to give me a kiss unexpectedly... Reaches to squeeze my hand when he's coming out of anesthesia...to comfort me!
I have always known I was blessed to have three beautiful children; this experience reminds me of what a lucky woman I am and what a beautiful life I was given.
Post again when we approach round two!!!!
