2009 ESCAPE THE ROCK WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Council Rock South High School, Holland, PA
The Council Rock South High School and the Council Rock South Wrestling Booster Club are proud to present the fourth annual Escape the Rock Wrestling Tournament, a 24 team, individual competition, with the top eight wrestlers in each weight class receiving awards. This includes a custom Championship Belt for the winner of each weight class. Wrestling is set to begin at 3pm on Friday, January 9, 2009, with the finals scheduled for 5:30pm on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Many college coaches will be in attendance. We are happy to announce that former Lock Haven University Head Coach, Carl Poff, who is also a Council Rock High School alumnus, will do the
honor of presenting our awards.
Our 2008 event was a huge success, with ETR newcomer and national prep power Wyoming Seminary taking the team title. Joe Kennedy from Delaware Valley was voted the Outstanding Wrestler after defeating the defending PA state champion, Nate Eachus from Hazleton, in the finals, Eachus earned the Most Falls trophy. The 2008 tournament featured 11 State Champions, 40 state place winners, 74 state qualifiers and 9 National Prep Tournament place winners. Congratulations to all of those wrestlers! Many of the teams also enjoyed post-season success in 2008. In PA, defending ETR champion Wyoming Seminary were the PA prep state champions and 3rd at the National Prep Tournament. Hazleton repeated as district champion, as did Council Rock South, who also finished 4th at the PA state duals. Across the river in New Jersey, Paulsboro was runner-up at their region tournament. Down in Delaware, Sussex Central was crowned Division I state champion and Hodgson Vo-Tech was the Division II state champion.
This year’s tournament has attracted some top teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The newcomers this year are headlined by nationally ranked Central Mountain, who were the 2008 PA state tournament runner-up and 3rd at the PA state duals, along with Phillipsburg, New Jersey, who were in the top 4 at the NJ state duals. There are many returning state qualifiers and place winners scheduled to compete, including the following who appear in WIN magazine’s pre-season national rankings: Council Rock South’s Josh Dziewa (#20
at 135) and Paulsboro’s Gerald Hodges (#15 at 215). Wyoming Seminary is #5 as a team and has two individuals ranked in Nicky Gordon (#10 at 135) and Joe McMullan (#7 at 215). Central Mountain is #10 as a team, which has the Alton twins, Dylan (#1 at 140) and Andrew (#3 at 145).
There is also an added element to this year’s Escape the Rock, as we are promoting Colon Cancer Awareness, hoping that the wrestling fans in attendance might help themselves or a loved one save a life. All fans will receive literature on the risks and symptoms of the disease, along with contact information on screenings and early detection. We will also be collecting donations to go toward colon cancer awareness and research.
For those who can’t make the trip to beautiful Bucks County, PA to catch the action in person, all of the results will be POSTED ONLINE LIVE, AS THEY HAPPEN, at http://liveevents.nhscasportsnetwork.com/.
We will also be providing a LIVE, AUDIO, INTERNET BROADCAST of the finals, which will be available at http://www.audiosportsonline.net/WVCD2/WVWWrestling.htm.
