Essential, es’sen’tial, 1. being of the greatest importance; 2. Absolute necessary and vital; 3. The most basic and vital element of something. That is Webster’s definition of the word essential. In fly casting there are five time tested and accepted essentials. These principles were shaped by Bill and Jay Gammel. Their book, “Essentials of Casting”, is available from the Federation of Fly Fishers web site (www.fedflyfishers.org). Whatever your casting style, these essentials must be followed. In this newsletter we will cover the first of the five essentials with the other four to follow.
SLACK LINE, the elimination of slack in the fly line, will maximize the efficiency of the cast.
It might be helpful to think about the difference between casting a spinning rod and casting a fly rod. A spinning rod casts a weighted lure that pulls a weightless line. The lure basically pulls the slack from the line. In fly casting, you cast a weighted line, and the leader and fly go along for the ride. Fly casting is mainly about the most efficient way to unroll the fly line to present the fly to a target. Slack in your fly line will delay the loading or bending of the rod with the weight of the fly line, causing some part of the casting stroke to be wasted, removing the slack in the line. The best way to recognize slack in the line is if you start your casting stroke and the end of the fly line is not moving, you are removing slack and shortening your effective casting stroke. Think of it this way: if you are towing a car with a chain, until that chain is pulled tight, you are not moving the car.
So, what causes slack in a fly line? The fly line can be moved by outside forces like wind and water, abrupt power application in the casting stroke, or poor timing between the forward and back cast. However, the most common cause of slack, especially in beginners, is the curve in the line from a high rod tip to the ground when starting the back cast. You should start your cast with the rod tip low, almost touching the ground, with the fly line straight. This is not always easy for the beginner to do unless someone is there to “walk the line out” so it is straight. If, however, you are alone, the best way to practice is to simply walk backwards with your rod tip low until the line is straight and then start your back cast. Once you become a little more advanced, have learned the roll cast and are practicing on grass or water, you can “roll” the line straight. By the way, never practice on concrete or asphalt with a good fly line.
Poor tracking of the fly rod is another way to introduce slack into the fly line. Keeping the rod in a straight plane throughout the casting stroke is important. Again, eliminating slack is an essential, not a style issue. Whether you cast more with a Lefty Kreh (side arm) or Joan Wulff (upright) style, the rod plane must travel in a straight line. The biggest problem tends to show up in the back cast. The biggest culprit is a swiveling of the wrist just about the time your hand leaves your peripheral vision. Try looking at your reel or hand on your back cast and make sure the view is consistent for the entire stroke. Also, you can have someone watch your hand on your back cast and tell you if it looks the same (doesn’t twist) throughout the stroke.
Remember: the fly line goes in the direction of the rod tip. Lefty says always keep your thumb in line with the target throughout the stroke. One good way to improve tracking issues is to lay out 50 to 100 feet of rope or garden hose in a straight line. Stand in the middle and make your cast, but drop the back cast to the ground and see it the fly line stays on the line. Do the same on the forward cast. Poor tracking can be difficult to correct on your own. If you think you need help with this issue, call me or Jerald and have us take a look.
Remember that slack line can kill a cast. With a little practice you will be able to feel the weight of the fly line “pulling” against the fly rod. As long as you feel that constant tension you know there is no slack in the line.
In the next newsletter we will discuss proper acceleration of the fly rod.
"It is not easy to tell one how to cast. The art must be acquired by practice." Charles Orvis, 1883
Attaching and Removing Split Shot by Jerald Lewis
Attaching and Removing Split Shot
One of the keys to catching fish is presenting the fly where the fish are located. Sometimes fish are well below the surface and we need to add some weight to enable the fly to reach the fish. One of the ways to add weight is to attach split shot to the tippet about 6 inches above the fly. Split shot are round lead with a slit down the middle.
To attach them, hold the split shot between your thumb and forefinger with the split facing up. Place the tippet in the split and then pinch the split together with hemostats.
One way to remove split shot is to begin with the split facing up. Next grasp one side of the shot with hemostats and then pry open the other side with your thumbnail or another pair of hemostats.
Doing this allows the split shot to be returned to your container and used again at a later time. This method might not work if the split shot is really small. In that case, you might have to cut off the fly and then slide the split shot off. Another option, which uses more time, is to cut the tippet off above the split shot. Then you will have to retie the fly and possibly more tippet. I don’t like this option, especially as I’ve gotten older and my eyes and fingers don’t work as well as they used to!
Now that we know how to add and remove split shot, let’s discuss a stream fishing situation where this might be needed. We’ve attached a strike indicator and we’ve attached our fly. Next we need to decide how much weight, split shot, is needed for the fly to drift in the current near the bottom. For deeper and/or faster water, more weight is needed to get the fly to the bottom. For shallower and/or slower water, less weight is needed. If the fly never catches on the bottom during the drift and the fish aren’t taking the fly, then add more weight. If you add so much weight that the fly hangs up early in the drift on every cast, then you’ve probably added too much. Remove a little and try again.
There have been times where I was confident the fish were near the bottom where I was fishing and the fish were not taking. So, I would add more weight and bingo, the fish would start biting. Be aware that as you change locations on the stream, you may have to adjust the amount of weight used depending on water depth and speed.
Remember, the next time you’re fishing, strive to present your fly to where the fish are feeding. If that’s well below the surface, then attach some split shot to increase your chances of success.

Trout Unlimited vs. Federation of Fly Fishers by Mike Hawkins
Trout Unlimited vs. Federation of Fly Fishers
And by “vs.” I mean one organization compared to the other not winners and losers. Both of these groups promote our sport so they are both worthy of our support. All too often opposing groups, with their own petty agendas sprout up and vie for the same limited funds from the same group of people. This usually means that some projects get watered down and nothing gets done. My personal opinion is that is not the case with these two fly fishing organizations. However, there are some differences in the mission statements that may be more geared to individual or clubs preferences.
2009 marked the 50 year of TU. It has 400 chapters, with 30 offices nationwide. Founded on the banks of the Au Sable River in Michigan. The guiding principal of TU has always been “take care of the fish and the fishing will take care of itself”. TU mission statement says, “to conserve , protect and restore North American cold water fisheries and their water sheds”. TU has a strong political presence at local, regional and national levels.
Federation of Fly Fishers came along a few years later. Started by Lew Bell and Lee Wulff in 1965. The first conclave took place in Eugene, Oregon and was hosted by the McKenzie Flyfishers. Today the FFF grown to over 300 clubs and is moving to an organization of individual members represented by regional councils. Shreveport, Longview and Tyler clubs are part of the Ark-La-Tex region of the Southern Council which covers part of Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. The FFF mission statement says, “the FFF is dedicated to the betterment of the sport of fly fishing through Conservation, Restoration and Education.
The rest of this is my opinion only so if you don’t want to hear it stop reading now. Although both of these organizations have conservation as stated themes, TU probably puts much more emphasis on conservation than anything else and only for cold water fisheries. Many of us have probably benefited from a TU program, some right here in the state of Texas. TU also has a great television show that highlights some of the river project they have worked on.
The FFF on the other hand is very strong in education programs for fly fishers. The individual councils of the FFF have regional conclaves and then there is the National Conclave (the 2010 conclave will be in West Yellowstone). I attended my first national in Loveland, Colorado this past year and it was a great experience. The Southern Council Conclave is in Mountain Home, Arkansas in October every year. This event is always well attended from people from all over the country. There are three days of classes that range from casting, tying, rod building and fishing all kinds of waters all for a nominal fee.
Again if you can join both of these groups, do so I think they are great stewards of money directed to bettering fly fishing everywhere.

Fly fishing is not just for trout by Jerald Lewis
Fly Fishing is Not Just for Trout?
It amazes me how often I’m asked this question or someone makes a comment similar to it. One of the recent times was a father/kid campout our church had here in East Texas. The land we camped on has a good sized pond loaded with bass, bream, and crappie. Some of the people were surprised that I could catch all those species, and good numbers of them, with a fly rod.
Granted, trout will always be the darling of fly fishing, but warm water and salt water species are well worth pursuing. In fact, sight fishing for redfish in the shallow water marshes in South Louisiana is one of my favorite fly rod pursuits. Like most trout fisherman, I’ve spent a lot of time staring at a strike indicator trying to figure out when a trout has taken the fly. Sometimes the take is very subtle and the indicator just twitches or floats a little different. Contrast that to a redfish take. The redfish grabs the fly and you better have a good hold of the fly rod! It’s kind of like playing the game of tug of war and the other team started pulling before you did.
While there are lots of differences between trout fishing and fishing for other species, there are many similarities. You still have to locate the fish, understand what they’re doing, and present your fly in a manner that will fool them. Your casting and “thinking like a fish” abilities get lots of practice.
One nice difference is that many warm water species are much closer to home than the nearest trout. This means the time commitment is not as great and you save some gas as well. Also, grilled redfish or fried crappie are very tasty. In fact, my wife is very encouraging of me fishing for redfish because she loves to eat them!
So don’t hesitate to fish for species other than trout. You’ll be glad you did and it will make you a better overall fly fisher.

The Fine Art of Seeing
I have, throughout my life, been afflicted with myopia, that is, short sightedness. This was first discovered in my grade six year when my teacher, Mr. Bishop, and I did not get along. After one altercation I was sent to take up residence at the back of the room, where presumably I would cause Mr. Bishop no more trouble. At the back of the room I was a little confused in that Mr. Bishop appeared to be writing in a deliberately faint sort of way on the chalk board making it hard to read. I can’t remember if it was falling grades or whether I complained to my mother about not being able to see the black board but I do remember going to the ’s Bay store in down town to get my first pair of glasses. I put these glasses on my face and the world changed. There were a number of posters on the walls of the office with pictures of beautiful women all wearing glasses of various styles and they all had wonderful smiles on their faces. I marveled at how clear and sharp each one of those pictures was and I wished I could take one or more of those pictures home with me and put them on my bedroom wall.
I had a similar experience during a fly fishing trip with my young family years ago. There was a time when I would rig up the rod at the tent or the car with whatever I had available in my meager supply of flies then run down to the stream and immediately begin to thrash the water. For me fly fishing was more of an athletic event than it was a contemplative sport. My father had taught me that if you don’t get a fish in the first couple of casts move on to another likely spot. I covered a lot of water and my tactics were most often unsuccessful and frequently frustrating because many of my fishing partners were catching fish. I never slowed down long enough to watch the water or my friends and to actually “see”.
It wasn’t until I read a book published by Nick Lyons Books called “Reading Trout Streams” that I began to understand the folly of my methods. Another book published by Nick Lyons Books “In The Ring Of The Rise” taught me more about using my eyes to see what was going on. This information came to me after a bit of a hiatus from fishing.
I had fished all through my growing up years with my Dad and then during my undergraduate degree at the of with my coach but had stopped when I moved to for graduate school. My lack of success as a fly fisherman combined with the many other things that were on my plate at the time made it easy to leave fishing behind. However after I was married and started having a family my wife and I took our children on canoe camping trips into the Northern Saskatchewan wilderness where there were all kinds of fish to be caught and my interest was revived. Initially I purchased a spin casting rod and caught Jack Fish and Pickerel but in the back of my mind these were second class fish and a spin casting rod was a second class rod, neither of which could be compared with the fish or the fly rods found on trout streams on the east slopes of the Rockies in my home . I guess that I was a fly fishing snob even before I knew there was such a thing.
Karen and I eventually took a trip to an trout stream with the kids. To celebrate the occasion I purchased a red fiberglass fly rod, a reel, some line and a few flies. I also purchased and read the books mentioned above as preparation for the trip and off we went. We camped at Elk Creek just above it’s confluence with the . This was a small creek with a few beaver ponds and an abundance of 12 inch trout.
There were two trout on this trip that taught me a huge amount about seeing and being patient.
My daughter Jennifer pointed out the first one. Jennifer saw the trout feeding in a small hole behind an obstruction that caused the water to eddy there. She was very young at the time and she had seen the fish feeding and knew somehow what it was. I think if she could have she would have taken me by the ear lobe and brought me to the place. As it was she took my hand and excitedly brought me over to the spot where, sure enough, there was a trout rising regularly to whatever bug happened to be on the surface.
In spite of having fly fished for many years I was just beginning to really learn about the sport and I wasn’t yet privy to all the lore about matching the hatch so I tied on, a #14 . Jen stood beside me as I cast the fly upstream of the feeding trout and she was at least as excited as I was. She stood bent forward from the hips with both her hands just in front of her mouth concentrating on the spot where the trout was feeding, hardly daring to breath. The trout obliged us both by taking the hook on the first cast and we had a nice fat fish to take back to Karen to cook for supper. I felt especially happy because my child thought that I might be some kind of good fisherman and I didn’t have to relate the story to anyone, Jenn did it for me.
Catching that fish was like putting on that new pair of glasses in grade six. A number of things became clear. I had seen the fish, watched it for a time, decided on a strategy to take it and was successful. Later that evening I watched as another trout rose regularly to surface bugs just up stream of where I was standing. I was fishing a beaver pond and not having a lot of success when I noticed this fish. He was resting in a channel about 20” wide that had been made by beavers getting into and out of the water. What little bit of current there was flowed past this point bringing bits of food with it and the trout would dash out into this gentle stream grab whatever had taken his interest and return to his hiding spot.
I watched for a few minutes and then cast a fly well upstream of the trout’s hiding spot and watched as the fly arrived just in front of the trout and sure enough the water erupted and the fly disappeared. I had another one. This time there was a young boy on the bank up stream of me who had witnessed the whole drama and he was very generous with his praise. There was a warm glow inside of me that night as I went to bed. It was the glow that comes from having learned something. I looked back on all the fly fishing I had done up to that time and realized that if I had just paid attention to my friends, read a few books and slowed down and watched I would have learned these things much earlier; I certainly had the opportunity. I had turned a corner on this trip and the world became a better place as a result.

Out fishing the guide

17.5"
This was the longest battle I've had in landing a fish. The locals called it a football. It was heavier than the 20" Rainbow I caught last month. The guide near us asked me if I needed help. I told him I only needed a bigger net. He didn't laugh.

Beaver
The beaver was ready for us to move on. Sadly, a family of river otters showed up in the same place the next day. Watch out trout.

Rainbow

LMF
The fog moves in around 7:30 each night with cool spots in the air.

LMF at 8PM
This is just beautiful to see each night on the LMF our last night there. My son just sighed and said, "I'm going to miss this place." Me too, Son.
