Kale grows easily in our garden plots. Maybe planted now for winter or in Spring.
Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, and reasonably rich in calcium. Kale, as with broccoli and other brassicas, contains sulforaphane (particularly when chopped or minced), a chemical with potent anti-cancer properties.

Cucumber Benefits
1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6,Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.
2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.
3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.
5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!
6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!
7. Lookign to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.
8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.
9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!
10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.
11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.
12. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!
13. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucmber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm your fingers and fingernails while you clean.

Thanks to all who came out Saturday Aug. 20th, we pulled many weeds & spread mulch. See Summer clean up album at right. We have a workday Aug. 27th for the 2nd shift - 9AM to 11Am. See ya Saturday!
6/2/2011 5:04:13 PM - 002088689521
I hope you enjoyed the Spring growing season. Summer is here again & it sure is hot!
The only corps that can withstand the heat are: Black eyed Peas, Okra & Sweet Potatoes.
They will need to be planted by June 12th.
If you don't want to plant any of these, please remove your old crops and cover your plot with leaves. The leaves will decompose over summer & make great soil to start planting in late August for the Fall garden.

It's been a great spring for Green Beans, I've picked 4 Publix bags of Green Beans from the benevolence row . I gave part of the green beans to CASA & others.
The green bean row is now open to garden members for you pick.
Enjoy the green beans with your families.

Thanks for the wonderful turn out last Saturday the 19th for our workday. The garden site walkways looks clean & fresh.
Our well pump tank started to rust & leak. Mike (plots 3 & 4) found a larger used well pump tank to replace the existing one. Thanks Mike! Also, we are trying a new watering system on the Benevolence rows 36 to 40. It will supply water to the root balls of each 4 rows of plants. This should save water.

I'm enjoying my garden so much, and learning alot. Great website with lots of info. One question, my green and red peppers aren't doing much, the flowers and buds are there, but they don't grow into peppers. What do they need?

Welcome New Member Jane L. to the FCC Community Garden and website.
5/27/2010 3:05:10 AM - 002082828793
I have a confession to make. The white squash I grew in my garden plot is not White Acorn squash as I have been telling everyone. It is really called White Scallop or Paty Pan Squash.
Here is an alterative to frying it. I cut up the larger squash and boiled a big pot of it today until it was tender. After it cooled using a utensil I spooned out the seeds with no effort at all and then the meat. I put the meat in a pot mashed it up like smashed cauliflower and added seasonings 1 TBSP Flour, 1 TBSP corn starch, Butter and then some grated mozzarella cheese. It was divine!
4/18/2010 3:04:47 PM - 002082828793
Migrant Farmer (Gil) ask a very good question recently about what was growing in the mulch and on the wood frames along side our precious vegetables in our community garden.
Of the three categories it could possibly be Mushrooms, Slime Molds or Fungi. I would have to say it is more than likely the Slime mold:
Common names: slime molds, “dog vomit” fungus Scientific names: species of Physarum, Fuligo, and Stemonitis
What do slime molds look like?
They start as brightly colored (yellow, orange, etc.) slimy masses that are several inches to more than a foot across. They produce many tiny, dark spores. These molds dry out and turn brown, eventually appearing as a white, dry powdery mass.
Are they a problem?
No. These fungi are “feeding” on bacteria growing in the mulch. They are normally a temporary nuisance confined to small areas.
What should be done?
The fungi may be left in place to decompose. If their appearance is offensive, discard the fruiting bodies in a compost pile, household garbage, or a spot in the yard away from existing mulch.
4/17/2010 3:23:21 PM - 002002583804
Take a look at the photo of the 'fungus' that I took on April 17. Does anyone what it is, what effect it may have on our garden?
4/4/2010 11:28:42 PM - 002088689521
Welcome new FCC Community Garden members, Nikki A, Ava D, Jane L & Dawn W. This has only been possible because existing members are willing to give up or share plots. See new Garden Plot Assignments below on this page.
3/28/2010 1:30:33 AM - 002088689521
We have 8 on the waiting list for plots. Existing members have been wonderful to share 1/2 of their plots to make room for 5 new members to experince gardening, with a 4' x 5' plot this spring. I will adjust the plot plan below as new members sign up. Growing together is a wonderful thing!
3/24/2010 1:46:28 AM - 002088689521
We spread 26 yards of mulch last Saturday, to get ready for spring. Thanks for all the help.
3/9/2010 12:30:30 AM - 002088689521
Try some new greens. Bok Choi is easy to grow, use greens in stir fry. Swiss Chard is also easy to grow, use as spinach in a salad or steam.
3/8/2010 10:49:32 AM - 002088791930
seedlings are coming up- it is sooooo exciting! I love to garden. Waiting on the planting of tomatoes! Kathy
3/7/2010 10:36:19 PM - 002088689521
I think it's safe to plant for the spring garden now. I hope the frost is pasted. I set out flowers at the front gate, 2 tomatoes plants in my plot a few weeks ago. The garden got frost 2 mornings in the last 9 days & killed the new plants.
So next weekend I'm going to plant my plot for spring. No more frost please!!!
3/1/2010 12:10:14 AM - 001041495994
We love our crops, enjoying the beets, carrots, radishes, brocolli, and more! Thanks to God who makes all things grow!
2/21/2010 1:56:23 PM - 002082828793
Plant flowers in the vegetable garden. They provide nectar and pollen that attract beneficial insects for pollination.!
1/10/2010 1:46:05 PM - 002082828793
The garden looks like it took a pretty good hit with the cold freeze snap we just had. Some things will not make it and others will come back. When it warms up it will be a good time to go salvage & clean up your plot etc. and plan for your next crop. It's been a fun experience thus far and hopefully everyone has enjoyed some fresh veggies on their dinner table.
Happy Gardening....

Ecclesiastes 11:6

Be sure to stay busy and plant a variety of crops, for you never know which will grow- perhaps they all will.

Jeremiah 29:5

" . . plant gardens and eat what they produce . . ."

Matthew 13:3-8

A farmer planted seed. As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road, and birds ate it. Some fell in the gravel; it sprouted quickly but didn't put down roots, so when the sun came up it withered just as quickly. Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled by the weeds. Some fell on good earth, and produced a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.
What kind of seeds are you sowing today? Anger - bitterness - your own way or thankfulness -
kindness - being peacemaker?
Make your world a better place, sow good seeds!

Why don't bell peppers grow in Florida Summers

Summer is the Best (and Worst) Time

Summer is best in Florida because of the heat — peppers adore hot weather!  Conversely, it can be the worst time, due to rain (like what we had in 2008 – whoa!), humidity and super-bright sunshine.  Each can cause problems, but there are solutions!

Solution number one is to primarily grow your chile (hot) and ornamental peppers in the summer.  They love the heat, and especially the habaneros, scotch bonnets and bhut jolokia peppers.  Their original home is the tropics, which fits right in with Florida in Summer!

Bell peppers are better grown in the cooler, “shoulder” seasons.  I’ve had very little luck growing nice, big bell peppers in Summer.

The sweet peppers can be grown in the hot Florida summer, as long as you provide them shade during the hottest part of the day.  In fact, I like to grow all but my hottest peppers in dappled shade, during July and August.  Sun scald can be a problem!

Humidity can also be an issue , unless you leave plenty of room between your pepper plants for air circulation.  If the air can’t circulate, sweet and bell peppers in particular can get mold and fungus on the leaves.

Should tomato plants be pruned back and how is it done?
As your tomato plants grow and develop their first bract of flowers you need to snap or cut off any suckers or lower leaves at least several inches from the ground. This will reduce the development of fungus and disease. Only indeterminate tomatoes should be pruned at this point. Your plant information tag will tell you if they are or not. Patio tomatoes are usually determinate.
How often should a garden be weeded?
Weeds may often look unthreatening, but they steal water and nutrients from your vegetables, so pull them when you see them. This is especially important early on. A 2006 study of weeds and vegetable growth showed there was a significant benefit to keeping areas weed-free for the first four to six weeks
What is Kolrabi?
Kohlrabi is a member of the cabbage family that will grow almost everywhere. Its strange name comes from the German words for “cabbage” and “turnip,” which is appropriate, since kohlrabi taste a bit like a combination of the two. If you think the name is weird, though, just wait until you see this strange vegetable. It’s shaped like a ball with several stalks growing out of one end. Many observers have likened its odd shape to the Russian spacecraft, Sputnik.

Kohlrabi comes in green or purple varieties, and can be eaten either raw or cooked. It’s low in calories and extremely high in nutrients, especially vitamin Cand dietary fiber, so it’s great for the immune system and for promoting digestive health.

http://www.farmersalmanac.com/recipes/a/what-the-heck-is-kohlrabi
What vegetables grow June, July & September?
You can grow Black eyed peas, peanuts, Okra, Collard greens, Mustard greens, Swiss chard, Sweet Potato. Cherry tomatoes may fruit in the summer; however, the full-size tomatoes will not set fruit in temperatures above 90 degrees.

Faith Covenant Church Community Garden Rules

Annual fee is $60.00, due September 1, 2010, for a 4’ by 10’ raised bed plot to cover garden expenses.

I will plant my plot by October 1st

If I must abandon my plot for any reason, I will notify the garden leadership.

I will keep weeds at a minimum and maintain the areas immediately surrounding my plot, if any.

Work time is sunrise to sunset.

If my plot becomes unkempt, I understand I will be given two weeks’ notice to clean it up.  At that time, it will be re-assigned or tilled in.

I will keep trash and litter out of my plot, as well as from adjacent pathways and fences.

I will participate in the end of summer clean-up of the garden.

I will plant tall crops where they will not shade neighboring plots.

I will pick only my own crops, unless given permission by another gardener.

I will not use insecticides or weed repellents without approval of garden leadership. This is an organic garden site.

I agree to volunteer my time towards the community gardening efforts (include a list of volunteer tasks when needed).

I will be solely responsible for my guests, including children.

I will not bring pets to the garden.

I understand that neither the garden group nor owners of the land are responsible for my actions. I THEREFORE AGREE TO HOLD HARMLESS FAITH COVENANT CHURCH COMMUNITY GARDEN GROUP AND FAITH COVENANT CHURCH, THE OWNERS OF THE LAND FOR ANY LIABILITY, DAMAGE, LOSS OR CLAIM THAT OCCURS IN CONNECTION WITH USE OF THE GARDEN BY ME OR ANY OF MY GUESTS.
