Windows, bricks and roof
The cement bricks are being installed and you can really see a big change in the construction these days. Over the 4th of July holiday a rough roof was added and the old windows were taken out. Today (July 13th) a new crew was in to replace the windows.
April 2010 - Oops! Foundation and steal beams for Steeple.
Oops! I didn't see that there. Our white wooden welcome board located on the tree line as you enter the parking lot was hit when our steal beams were delivered for our steeple. Mustang will be repairing our sign.
There is so much going on with the construction work. The foundation has been poured and the frame work for the steeple was added. There are a lot of pictures to look at.
Purchase of a Carillon System for our Church Approved: At the 12 Apr Planning Council meeting, after discussion and voting, purchase of the carillon system for placement in our new church steeple was unanimously approved.
Status of Giving for the New Carillon System Project: As previously reported, FELC received an anonymous “challenge grant” donation of $4,500 towards the purchase of the carillon. We have been blessed to have received donated funds to date of $5,010. This amount plus the challenge grant donation gives us $9,510 towards the purchase of the carillon and total project costs. However, we do not yet know what will be the final costs for modifications to our new steeple and for purchase/building of a control cabinet.
We had estimated the carillon purchase price to be approximately $9,000, but this estimate did not include expenses for a cabinet to safely and securely house the carillon controls nor modifications to the church steeple to add a support system for the carillon speakers, electrical wiring, and louvers on the sides of the steeple to project outward the carillon’s bell(s) chiming and hymns. We will be getting estimates for these costs as soon as possible, but getting these cost estimates will not delay purchase of the carillon nor any part of the expansion project.
So, how does this impact donations to the carillon project? You can delay your donations to the carillon project until we know the final steeple modifications and cabinet costs; or you can still donate now. Any donations over the final costs of the carillon project (including the steeple modifications, and control cabinet costs) will go into our expansion fund. We will let everyone know as soon as possible what the estimates for these final costs will be and when donations exceed the total carillon project costs.
What’s going to Happen to our Old Church Bell? The Planning Council also voted to ask Nichols Bethel Methodist Church here in Odenton if they’d like the bell back. FELC was given the bell in the early 1950’s by Nichols Bethel, as they had used the bell since the early 1920’s (the bell was cast in 1922 by the McShane Foundry of Baltimore for Nichols Bethel). If Nichols Bethel does not want the bell returned to them, the Planning Council will meet at a later date to decide what to do with the bell.
March 2010 - Walls are rising!
The awning from the stairs to the basement near the open area was demolished and a foundation was poured in our main area. Concrete is now visible in the big hole in the ground and you can see the layout of the walls and elevator shaft. Things are starting to move now. With the warmer temperature and sunny days, this project is about to take off.
Our ceiling is gone!
It has been quite loud around here. Yesterday (2/17/2010) there was a lot of loud construction noises, earth quake shakes and flickering of lights. There was a dump truck here continuously taking load after load of snow from the front of the building where our new foundation will be constructed. When I went to take pictures of our progress I found we had no ceiling, a wall erected and furniture moved with plastic placed on it. The basement was filled with dust every where. Here is what was reported from Corkill and Mustang:
1. We have been delayed about 7 days due to the 24+" of snow covering the site.
2. 95% of the demolition is complete.
3. Digging for new foundation will begin next week.
4. We will be able to use the basement even though there is no ceiling. Existing lights will remain in place.
On another note, I got great pictures of our Bell which was purchased when we bought the old Bethel church. The Bethel Bell was constructed by Mc Shane Bell Foundry Company which is still around and located in Brooklyn, Md. The inscription reads:
Bethel Memorial M.E. Church, South
Odenton, Md.
1922.
Mc Shane Bell Foundry Co.
Baltimore, Md.
1922.
(Thank you Ms. Peggy Williams; self proclaimed Nichols-Bethel busy body and historian, for the Bell information)
Not much to report but SNOW!
There has not been too much construction to report because we have had a couple of awesome snow storms. On Friday and Saturday, February 5th and 6th, we received about 27 inches of snow. Enough snow to shut our services down on Sunday the 7th. The snow was plowed Monday evening and when I returned to work on Tuesday, February 9th the crew had asbestos signs up indicating that they were working in the basement. No picture could be taken while they worked on this project. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 9th and 10th we received another foot of snow! This pretty much stopped everything in our area. I could not make it back into work until Friday, February 12th. Wendy MacDonald, Scotty MacDonald, Beth MacDonald, Buford Hansberger and Mike Ketcham were shoveling as I tried to get everything together for service on Sunday. Monday, February 15th was President's day and the office was closed. This morning, we do have a crew here but they are working inside again. I cannot get many pictures when the crew works inside but check out the pictures from the snow fall.
