Armor of God VBS
We have finished day 2 of VBS. We've had so much fun. The children have been delightful. We are teaching the lessons and leading the songs with puppets since Joe was unable to secure the time off from the bank. Joey is doing most of the work as "Grandpa." He has developed a delightful and amusing personality. The plays have been very effective in teaching the lessons. The children love the use of puppets to teach the lessons.
We've had wonderful lessons in our classes. I'm teaching the older group again. I'm challenging them by giving them partial quotations from scripture and having them find the passage. The discussions have been deeper and has caused them to think more. My goal is to spur them on to use their Bible more on a daily basis and to have more effective life changing Bible study. The younger classes are doing a wonderful job of learning the principles from the lessons as well.
The activities have been a lot of fun. Yesterday we had the traditional obstacle course. I teased them about skipping it. They didn't think that was a good idea at all.
Today we had tug of war challenges. They were very amusing. The boys against girls tug of war was the favorite. The girls won! The boys ended up in a dog pile. Unfortunately the two smallest boys were so determined to stand their ground that they ended up at the bottom of the pile. They weren't about to do what I instructed, let go of the rope and roll out of the way. No one was hurt. Just a few rope burns which quickly resolved.
Tomorrow is the last day. The children will finish making their armor. I'll take a group picture of everyone together. The activity tomorrow is to use a shield to block the flaming arrows (splash bombs) of the evil one. We're leaving the children in suspense.
Today the children enjoyed a picnic outside for lunch. I think we'll do that again tomorrow. I'll take pictures at lunch again.
City of Children Mission Trip
Joey, Davey, and I returned home from our week long mission trip to the City of Children in Ensenada, BC, Mexico. The contrast from the U.S. and Mexico was instant. The roads were immediately narrower and much rougher. The driving is aggressive. The buildings are made of crumbling concrete and covered with graffiti. Along the ocean side of the road you see American owned homes, condos, and resorts. On the hillside of the road you see barren land covered with colonies of dilapidated concrete shacks, plywood hovels, and very rundown trailers. The disparity is amazing and heart breaking.
The boys had the opportunity to work with the congregation in Calonia 89. They delivered food to the poor members of the congregation. They lived in 2-4 bedroom concrete or plywood homes with concrete floors. The main room had 1 small bed and a small table (about the size of the one in the cabin at Family Camp.) The people were very appreciative of the love and care. Joey said, "I felt like I was the hands and feet of Jesus when I got to hand out the food. I felt like I was really letting my light shine."
None of us will look at water and bathrooms the same again. We used so much bleach to wash vegetables, food preparation surfaces, and dishes. We probably used 2 gallons over the course of the week. Things started smelling and tasting like bleach after a while.
The children at the home were a delight. Their stories are heartbreaking. So many have been abused, malnourished, and unloved. They soak up whatever attention you will provide. They love high 5's. They love to play futbol (soccer) and jump rope.
The boys had a lot of fun playing. Davey immediately started holding court once we arrived. We went to play with the mediano chicos (6-9) and grandes (10-13) on their playground. In fact, Davey didn't return with the group to unpack and get settled. I had to go and get him. He was in the tire swing surrounded by 10 boys. When I called him and told him we had to go, I felt horrible. It was hard to say good bye to 30 sad little boys who wanted him to stay. I think the boys really enjoyed having children their age. The rules say that the kids have to be at least 14, so they don't get visits from kids their own age very often. All of them took full advantage of it. The boys have some new best friends. When we tucked them into bed on Thursday, Joey was behind Davey and I. The question I heard was, "Donde es su otro hijo? Donde es Jose?"
I had the pleasure of teaching the babies (up to 7) in the afternoons. They had fun making coffee filter butterflies and sail boats. I flew each of them as butterflies when we did the lesson about Nicodemus. My back was sore from that after I had lifted such heavy pans and washed dishes leaning over the deep sink in the kitchen. They may be called babies, but they are not little. Several of them are heavier than Davey. They loved to have books read to them, play catch, be tickled, and play "Row, Row Your Boat." They would start saying "Otra vez" before I finished the song. I really need to learn how to say "We need to take turns," before I return next year. I had to drag children of my lap so another child could have a turn.
The mediana chicas were wonderful to teach in the evenings. They are very disciplined and loved their worksheets. Even my translator and the Mamis liked the worksheets. Once I handed out the worksheets I no longer had a translator. Flor helped with the early readers.
I had fun with the children at craft time. It was a wonderful time to be able to play with the children and talk to them. They loved the fuse beads and the painting projects.
Another good time to get to know the children are when they came to eat dinner with us. Each lunch and dinner we had a different group eat with us. I really enjoyed speaking with the older girls. It was easier to have longer conversations because they knew more English and were willing to teach me more Spanish. The boys were harder to get to know because they were so busy hanging out with the boys.
On Thursday we spent part of the day in the port section of Ensenada shopping and eating out for lunch. The restuarant we went to served mainly seafood and was very nice. We were serenaded by a Mariachi band. It was my first experience with street venders and barkers. The people who were begging on the street were women and children who were obviously hungry and needed help.
We are looking forward to joining the Roseville congregation next year for this trip. I encourage everyone to join us in this special work. Contact us at 707-786-9525 if you are interested. We should know in October if our group has been accepted.
Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School will be August 10-12 from 10am-3pm. There will be puppet shows, crafts, and activities. All children ages 2-12 years are welcome to attend.
This year's theme is "The Armor of God." Contact us at ferndale-c-of-c@suddenlink.net with any questions.
Northern California Family Camp
We're packing for family camp. It starts on Monday, July 6 and goes through Saturday, July 11. We have the Children's Bible Class booklets ready to print. The sample crafts are in the bag with all the necessary supplies. I have just one more task to complete in order to be ready for the activities.
This is a wonderful time of fellowship and Bible study. If you are able come join us. If not I hope you will be able to join us next year. The McKinleyville congregation go to a lot of work and love to organize this event each year.
Another event to plan for is the Annual Labor Day Weekend camping trip which is hosted by the Garberville congregation. This year it will be at Kamp Klamath. When reserving your site make sure to tell them Scott and Angie Weaver referred you so you can receive a 10% discount. We will be going into the Jedidiah Smith Forest for hiking on Saturday. There are a lot of activities available at the campground for those who rather not hike.
Christmas Party
The Christmas Party will be December 14 at 3:00 p.m. The children have selected poems about Christmas to read. There will be singing, the reading of the birth of Jesus from Luke, and refreshments to follow. I hope everyone who is able will attend. We always enjoy this time when the children can share the meaning of Christmas and Jesus with their friends and other children.
Fun and Encouraging Camping Trip
The annual camping trip hosted by the Garberville Church of Christ was enjoyed by everyone. We had to change campgrounds. The planned site was Swimmer's Delight, but soon after unloading the cars we realized the campsite was infested with large ants. Upon checking out another site, we discovered the same problem. It was decided to change campgrounds to Grizzly Creek State Park, where we camped two years ago.
After the change of plans camp was set up easily and the fun began. Friday night was a time of settling in and fellowship.
On Saturday, we ate breakfast, enjoyed a short hike with everyone. Some then decided to return to camp, while others went on a longer more vigorous hike. In the afternoon, we all traveled to Eureka and visited Fort Humboldt, where we had a picnic lunch. We had more time for fellowship around the campfire in the evening, complete with s'mores.
On Sunday, we had our worship service. The lesson was shared between David Widner, the minister from Garberville, and Joe. The afternoon was spent on another hike, a visit to the visitor's center, and more fellowship. In the visitor's center, the children enjoyed seeing stuffed specimens of native animals and birds, touching bones and stones from the area, and looking at pictures of plants native to the Redwood forest. Unfortunately, Joe and I had to return home on Sunday afternoon. The other families stayed on until Monday afternoon.
Discussions regarding how we ought to live our lives and how to serve those around us better are always a part of the camping trip. This year we discussed how we could serve our communities and the people in them better. Sometimes it seems like we can do so little that we forget that small acts of kindness and service can have a big impact on other people's lives. These discussions always stimulate more growth as individuals and as congregations.
We always look forward to the camping trip and hope more people will be able to join us next year. The site of the camping trip will change from year to year, so contact Scott at the Garberville church of Christ for more specific information. Check out the album of pictures taken during this trip.
Summer Activites A Success
This summer has been filled with wonderful activities. One of the highlights was the Northern California Family Camp, which was held over the 4th of July week at Richardson Grove RV Campground. Joe and I organized the youth activities and Bible class. The children studied about the early church with the text being taken from Acts. The devotionals and lessons were educational and uplifting.
The children enjoyed their afternoon crafts and activities. The crafts included church birdhouses, salt votive candles, painted fabric Bible covers, and painted picture frames. The activities included flour tag capture the flag, capture the fort, Scripture freeze tag, and a wet sponge relay. They had fun making up their games and playing together.
At campfire on Friday night, they put on a performance where they sang songs learned over the week.
The other highlight of the summer was the Vacation Bible School, which was held at the end of July. We had between 13-14 children each day. The theme was "God Keeps His Promises" based on Noah and the Ark from Genesis 6-9. The backdrop was an ark, altar, and rainbow done in a Eric Carle style. The children had fun with the painting and assembly of the backdrop. The lessons were uplifting and prompted good discussion and growth. The activities included the traditional and much anticipated obstacle course, animal charades, and egg carry relay. The crafts included make your own puzzle, jungle sand art pictures, and rainbow sun catchers.
The children really enjoyed Joe's energetic and fun song and lesson session each day. As Joe says it's his job to "shake not stir the children and then hand them over to their teachers."
We look forward to the Ladies' Day in October and the Children's Christmas Party in December. This coming Sunday is our monthly Day In One Accord fellowship and potluck.
