Quick Start Tennis is designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size Tennis shoes required. Children must be of age at the time the class begins. Tennis rackets and balls will be provided for all Quick Start camps. For classes cancelled by GCPR due to weather; the dates will be extended.

Our school counselors will be sharing information about 1-2-3 Magic, an easy-to-use technique for managing difficult behavior in children. Parents will have an opportunity to view Dr. Thomas W. Phelan’s video and learn effective strategies for providing consistent discipline at home.

Sci/TECH 2012 is February 2nd. This exciting night begins at 6:00pm in the cafeteria with the amazing science magician, Arthur Atsma. Over twenty scientists from the greater Atlanta area will be visiting our school for hands on workshops and investigations. You can expect to hear from astronomers, archeologists, doctors and more! Doors open at 5:30 for your child to choose 2 events he/she wants to see and get one "mystery" ticket for a special presentation. See you there!

:-1 box of hot cocoa packets
-1 box of candy canes
-Bring a "peanut" free snack to share with BETA club members (salty or sweet) as we are sure to work up an appetite.
**Each student must send a note to stay afterschool. Please include a cell phone number (in the note) where a parent can be reached in case we need to call to confirm transportation.
Sending home on Monday, December 5th. Only students who return permission slip can watch movie.

Gwinnett County students will take and end of semester assessment that covers all learning from the beginning of the year. Grades will count in this nine weeks grade as 5% for their overall grade, making other tests count for 45% this nine weeks instead of 50%. Students are encouraged to review their notes from all their classes to review concepts. Please see the testing schedule posted on the calendar.

This is not a school sponsored event, parents need to be responsible for their child.
For the next (and last) RRT rotation, the counselors will be covering our new Think First & Be Safe curriculum. This lesson will address sexual and physical abuse, and neglect. It will also cover various lures that child predators may use. Parents have the option of excluding their child from this lesson by sending a written note to school.
Many parents have inquired over the past week how they can redeem their child’s spirit wear gift certificate. The PTA would like you to fill out the attached spirit wear form and return it to the PTA box in the front office by next Thursday October 27th. The LAST spirit wear order will be going out Tuesday Nov 1st!! If your child earned the spirit wear gift certificate for a shirt or shorts, but would like to upgrade to a sweatshirt, you will be able to. The PTA will pay $12 out of the sweatshirt price. After School Book Clubs Begin!
We are excited to announce that our after school book clubs begin this month! On Thursday, October 13th from 2:45-3:45 students will get together to discuss this month’s featured book. This month’s featured book for our 2nd-3rd grade students is the very funny Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin.
This month’s featured book for our 4th-5th grade students is the wonderful Enemy Pie by Derek Munson.
Students who decide to join this month’s club will need to read the book before the meeting and bring the book with them to the book club. At the club, students will discuss the book with their peers and engage in a fun follow up activity led by one of our teachers.

The CogAT measures students’ abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal assessments. Teachers use CogAT scores to determine if students are achieving to their potential and to identify their areas of strength.

Testing begins daily and promptly at 8:15.
During the testing period, you can help your student’s performance by doing the following: 1) have your child here each day to test 2) encourage your child to do his/her best; and 3) have your child well rested.
Results of the CogAT should arrive in December. Hopefully, your child’s results will be included in his/her re-port card envelope at the end of the second nine week grading period.
Reflections Entries are due on Friday September 30, 2011 by 9:00 a.m. Volunteers will be available in the lobby to receive the students' entries as they arrive at school.
We are looking forward to 100% of our fifth graders participating!

Please send in any boxtops that you have may have in your pantries! Each Boxtop coupon is worth .10 cents and will be used to purchase PE equipment for our school. Our class is competing with all of the other classes on our grade level to win an ice cream party at the end of the nine weeks. The class with the most boxtops turned in each nine weeks wins!
Just place the boxtops in a ziplock bag and write the teacher name on the outside!

Our school will be collecting toothbrushes and toothpaste, for the Great Days of Service. We will be collecting these items from September 26th - 29th. Donations will benefit Gwinnett shelters, group homes, and food pantries.
