Historical Auburndale Walking Tour
The information given in this tour was found on site written by Steve Rajtar. I give all credit to him and his sources in putting this tour together, the only thing I did was create a photo journal from it.

Site of Old Railroad Station
The name of Auburndale for the railroad station, and then the town, was suggested by Mrs. Pulsifer, who was the wife of the publisher of the Boston Herald. In 1903, Auburndale established a "color line", which had a radius of 1/4 mile from the railroad station located near here, then the exact center of town. No colored person was allowed to live within the area bounded by that line.

Auburndale City Hall
This building was erected in 1927, including indoor parking for the city's fire truck. In 1954, a new fire station opened across the street, and the old truck quarters were remodeled to provide an office for the city manager.

State Bank of Auburndale
This triangular building, one of the city's best known landmarks, opened in 1912 as the State Bank of Auburndale. It was the first brick building on this street.

This block of Main St. near the Florida State Bank was twice destroyed by fire in the 1910s, with only the Florida State Bank surviving. The fire of November 23, 1913, began in the H.P. Walker Building and destroyed practically the entire business section of Auburndale.

St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This church was built by the community, Episcopalians and others alike. The first service was held in it on September 25, 1898. They later built a parish house which also doubled as a community center. The Carpenter Gothic style church features three stained glass windows created in 1913 by C.E. Langley, and another that dates from the 1890s. The chancel was extended and a new altar was added during 1937.

First Church of the Nazarene
This building was formerly the home of the First Methodist Church. Its stained glass windows date to its original construction in 1922.

Site of the First Public School
The first public school in Auburndale, known as Public School #56, was located near this site. Before it, there was a private school on Park St. run by W.S. Irvin and his two sisters. In 1947, a new elementary school was opened across the street.

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church
This congregation was organized on October 21, 1906, by Rev. J.A. Wooten and Deacon A.J. Bishop. This sanctuary was rebuilt by Rev. W.J. Isaac and dedicated on October 25, 1944.

St. James AME Church
This church was organized by Bishop Rt. Rev. G.N. Collins and Pastor Rev. J.C. Wilkins. The sanctuary was rebuilt by Rev. J.L. Denmark.

This home, now utilized as a museum, was built in 1894.

The Baynard House (Second)
This large home, now housing the Kersey Funeral Home, was the residence of E.M. Baynard. Around the house was an ornamental fence to keep out roaming animals. It overlooked his large citrus grove which stretched between Lakes Stella and Ariana.

Site of Braddock Property
Site where Bobby Braddock, an American country music songwriter and record producer grew up. A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Braddock has contributed numerous hit songs during more than 40 years in the industry, including 13 number-one hit singles. Although the structure is new, this property is owned by Bobby's older brother, Paul and it is a private residence.

Site of Senior High School
This property was donated by Capt. John Patterson in May of 1913. In 1915, Auburndale Senior High School was built here, with a cornerstone laid on September 8, 1915, by Mrs. F.I. Stone, president of the Auburndale Woman's Club. Its first graduating class was in 1925, and the W.P.A. added a gymnasium in 1936.

Auburndale High School
This high school was completed in 1958.

Lake Ariana
Along the east shore was located the clubhouse of the Seminole Club, which opened on December 20, 1908. Max Beach on Lake Ariana was popular as a swimming area and there was a pavilion for dances in the 1920s. Earlier along the lake, a post office was located in W.L. Patterson's store in 1883. At that time, the surrounding community was known as Sanitaria.

First Presbyterian Church
This Spanish Mission style church with the square tower was built for the Presbyterian congregation in 1925. This was not the "first" Presbyterian church in Auburndale, as it was predated by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the 19th century. In early 1900 following its dissolution, its building between the post office and fire station was purchased by the school board and made into a three-room school. It later was converted into an apartment house.

Paul Smith Hotel
In the late 1920s, the first floor of the hotel was occupied by Hobby's Pharmacy and the Groceteria, which later became the Auburndale All-American Store. A later use of the building was as the Ariana Apartments.

Lawrence Brown House

The L.B. Brown House was designed and constructed in the late 1800s by a self-taught master carpenter, Lawrence B. Brown. It contains nine rooms and is approximately 1700 sq.ft. It is an impressive structure adorned with heavy Victorian ornamentation. Mr. Brown owned this home and was a former slave.

John J. Swearingen House
John J. Swearingen, an attorney and state senator, owned this two-story brick Neocolonial style house. It was built in 1923 using plans developed by B. Clayton Bonfoey, which included an Ionic portico and a gallery across the first floor entrance facade. Later owners include Katherine Swearingen Langford and her husband, Richard. In 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Thomas Lee Wilson House AKA The Stanford Inn

This Victorian treasure was built in 1906 by prominent Polk County Attorney Thomas Lee Wilson. Mr. Wilson and his wife Cora and their only daughter, Tommie Lee lived in the home upon it's completion in 1906. Tommie Lee lived in the house from the 1920s until her death in 1983. In 1995 after an extensive refurbishment, The Stanford Inn was transformed into a bed and breakfast and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This building was used as a funeral parlor in the movie My Girl.

The Gamble Plantation

This antebellum mansion was home to Major Robert Gamble and headquarters of an extensive sugar plantation. It is the only surviving plantation house in South Florida. It is believed that Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin, took refuge here after the fall of the Confederacy, until his safe passage to England could be secured. In 1925, the house and 16 acres were saved by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and donated to the state. Today, the mansion is furnished in the style of a successful mid-19th century plantation.

Madira Bickel Mound Archaeological Site

This ancient Native American site was the first in Florida to be designated a State Archaeological Site. Karl and Madira Bickel donated the mound and surrounding property to the state in 1948. The flat-topped ceremonial mound-composed of sand, shell, and village debris-measures 100 by 170 feet at the base and is 20 feet in height. Archaeological excavations have disclosed at least three periods of Native American cultures, the earliest dating back 2,000 years.

Cracker House Tour
A park ranger with knowledge of the Florida Cracker lifestyle hosted a great educational tour through the Cracker home replica, schoolhouse, and the other areas which are used for students in the area.
