Let us tell you about a blessing that came into the life of several golden girls out of nowhere. Most of us played sports somewhere in our younger lives, so when a senior basketball team was formed, a few were ready and some others initially responded "Are you out of your mind? We are too old and will get hurt!"
The few brave souls who ventured out from the beginning never gave up on recruiting and wore down others by acting like it was so much fun for a bunch of fifty and sixty year olds playing ball together. When the holdouts came out, the story was always the same: They agreed to come to check it out and just practice! Most intended to get their friends off their backs by saying "I didn't enjoy it" and not come back. However, what each of them found was a group of women who were having FUN!!!
We have so much fun being together and building this team. Remember when you were young and you dreaded practices. Not the case now, we still work hard but we can't wait for the next time we can practice. We may not win every game, but at the end, it doesn't really matter because we are still winners for living a dream together. By the way, we have had injuries, but we mend and come back. No one wants to miss the fun and fellowship of being a part of this great team.
Through a group of old women running around slower and sweating more, we have renewed old friendships and found many new friends. Words can not explain what this opportunity to act like a teenager again means to us. This team is very dear to all of us and we will always be thankful for God bringing a bunch of senior citzens together for fellowship, fun and love. Thanks to a very dear group of special women who are matured in years, but are truly young at heart.
We can not fail to mention our leadership tearm. Initially, we had a person who was willing to sacrifice her time to coach the team. She had participated in senior basketball before and could help navigate us through the beginning. When she wanted to step down, we were fortunate to find two coaches and one manager who are not gray yet, but complete our team. They have worked hard to mold and shape us into something that resembles basketball players who can jump, shoot, and box out. They try to push us hard but they patiently understand that we need more timeouts and bathroom breaks. Our team was missing something until these special folks showed up. They are our glue and we thank them for taking their time to share our experience.
