The instructors first learned from students, then on a follow-up visit became students themselves during a recent training session for high school teachers. The Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies, whose office is housed at Sinclair Community College, features hands-on learning in a project-based and collaborative learning environment. Veteran Ford PAS teacher Donna Tucker, of Lima Senior High School, brought several of her students to showcase their work from her class and to facilitate the class for the participants, teachers from all over Ohio, helping them complete the activity. “The students were the highlight of the whole session,” one participant remarked following the first week’s classes. Their teacher, Ms. Tucker, who has taught the Ford PAS modules for the past four years, is proud of the way her students have responded to the material. “I used to spend hours every day writing up students,” she said. “But since we introduced this curriculum, I have zero referrals. The students truly love this material, and so do I.”
The workshops were held over a two day period in November with a two day follow-up in December, during which the participants each presented--or “unpacked”--an activity of their own choosing from the Ford PAS curriculum. The Ford PAS modules are designed to teach 21st century skills such as communication and collaboration, and may be incorporated into any high school class, even math or science.
