A Year Already - Time Flies!
Hannah is going to be one year old this Saturday. I can't believe how this past year has flown by - it seems like just last week that she was rushing to make her entry into our world!
Being a mom to two girls definitely has its ups and downs, but generally more ups than downs. I love watching my two girls interact - it's obvious that they really love each other. Miriam loves to show Hannah different things (sometimes she wants to help too much), and Hannah adores her big sister. Hannah loves to give kisses, and she is generally full of smiles and giggles. Sometimes I can see a bit of jealousy between them, especially when it comes to Mommy time, but overall it is a joy to be their Mommy.
The Zen of Potty Training
Well, Miriam is officially potty trained. I keep saying that she just woke up from her nap one day and said to herself "self, I think I'll use the potty now." Very zen... almost.
Actually, what happened is that she woke up from her nap on Tuesday about three weeks ago and asked to put on a big girl diaper, but there weren't any in her closet. "Mommy, we need to open a new pack!" "Sorry, Miriam, but there aren't any more packs of big girl diapers. Do you want to wear underwear or a regular diaper?" "No, I don't want to wear anything." And so she went nakey bum under her pants. And then she went potty. And then she went again. And then she pooped in the potty of her own free will, and there was much rejoicing by mommy and daddy because she didn't scream, and much rejoicing my Miriam because she finally got that little Cinderella doll that had been sitting on the bathroom counter waiting for her to poop in the potty. And then she wore diapers to school (daycare) the next day, but that was the last time that she wore diapers during the day (excluding naps). After a couple more days of nakey bum, she finally agreed to put on underwear because the seam on her beloved comfy pants was making her a little sore.
The next week when I took her to school and told them that she was wearing underwear, her teachers looked at me like I had two heads. I could see their thoughts: "She's never even SAT on the potty here - what are we going to do?!" She was fine - she used the potty when she needed to with no accidents. They were all amazed when I picked her up.
So do you want to know my dirty little secret? I lied. There were (and still are) two packs of big girl diapers in Hannah's closet - I just didn't feel like going to getting one. My gut told me she was ready and just needed a little nudge, but my head told me I was crazy. Maybe I was crazy, but thankfully my gut was right.
A Month and a Half In (or thereabouts)...
Well, it's been 6 weeks since Hannah was born. It was great having extra hands for the first month - thanks Grandma and Pop-pop! :) Since everyone has left, we are adjusting pretty well to being a family of four. Miriam is a great big sister - she loves Hannah and is very excited in the mornings to help get her up. She likes to hold her, sing to her, and give her kisses. Of course, we have our 2-year-old moments, but overall the adjustment went more smoothly than I expected. Even her teachers at daycare were impressed with how well she was adjusting with a new baby at home - they say that she is still as helpful and as good a listener as she has always been at school. :)
Hannah is a sweet baby - a champion nurser and a good sleeper. At 5 1/2 weeks she weighed 11lbs 4oz and was 22" long (I found this out after taking her to the doctor for a cold that all three of us girls have been sharing). She sleeps from about 9pm until at least 4am, sometimes later, nurses and goes back to sleep until around 8:30 or 9:00. She has started smiling, and she loves to watch her big sister when Miriam is singing or talking to her.
Today I went to the commissary for the first time with both girls. Overall it was a good trip. I think I'm getting the hang of being a mom of two. :)
Hannah has arrived!
On 03 July, Jen gave birth to Hannah Elizabeth Franzke - a beautiful 8lb, 1oz, 20.5" baby girl. What an entry Hannah made! Miriam has always been such an easy, cooperative child, and we have often said that we were doomed - our second one was bound to be a trouble-maker. Hannah already came into this world making a statement of her own agenda.
Here is a short version - Jen had been having contractions all day, starting about 2:30 AM. By mid-afternoon, they were still relatively far apart. Jen decided to take a bath to ease the pain of the contractions a little bit, and after a few minutes in the tub, the contractions sped up drastically. By the time she got out of the tub, the contractions were about 2 minutes apart. We didn't even have time to wake Miriam from her nap and get her dressed before Jen said "I'm not going to make it. We need to call the ambulance." At about 4:30 PM, Joe delivered Hannah at home, on our bed, while talking to the ER nurse on the phone. A few minutes later, the ambulance crew arrived and took Jen and Hannah to the hospital. They were only in the hospital for 24 hours, and were dismissed in time to go to a friend's house for 4th of July picnic dinner and fireworks! What a great weekend we have had!
Getting Ready
Well, here we are - 34 weeks pregnant and getting ready to move. No, we're not moving back across the ocean yet (next year), but we are moving across base and into a bigger apartment. We are very excited about having more space, but the prospect of moving at this point in a pregnancy seems a bit daunting.
The way that it works here with housing is that you can get your name on the waiting list as soon as you find out that you're pregnant. Great. The catch, though, is that they won't offer you anything until you're in the third trimester of said pregnancy - right at the time that you should be lifting heavy boxes and furniture. Makes perfect sense, right? Right.
So here we are, packing things up to move this weekend. We got exactly one and a half week's notice from the time housing called us to our move-in date. We get three business days to move. Luckily I was able to talk our housing counselor into giving us a move-in date of Thursday, so we get over the weekend to do the bulk of the moving.
I'm a little worried about how Miriam will do with the move and living in a new house. She knows that we are moving to a new house, but she doesn't really understand what that means. Just like she doesn't really understand that a new baby is coming in a few short weeks.
So many changes, so little time...
Life with a 2-year-old
Life with a 2-year-old is very different from life with a 1-year-old. Especially life with an independent 2-year-old. Miriam is learning things so fast - her vocabulary has exploded (although not all of her words are completely clear yet), and she is starting to talk in sentences. She currently has two favorite phrases - "by myself" and "Lovey take him with us?". She wants to help with everything. When she was one, she would never notice when I started the washer or the dryer, or poured her a cup of milk, or set the table. Now she notices all of those things and wants to do all of them by herself, or at least to help us do them as much as she can. If she doesn't get to, watch out! Although, she is pretty good at calming herself down and using her words when we tell her that "we don't understand screaming/whining/etc."
Miriam is still a sweet little girl, though. She is very good at sharing when asked, although she does have a little trouble sharing some of her toys. But she is learning. And growing - the girl is tall! She was right around 36" on her 2nd birthday, so if you go by the old wives' tale that means she will be 6ft tall someday. She is pretty sensitive and gets very upset when we yell, whether it's at her or at a football game. She is generally a good listener and fairly cooperative, and we are so thankful for that.
Miriam loves to read books, and she will sit back in her rocking chair and read to herself. She also loves music and loves to sing and dance. We are working on numbers right now - she can kind of count to five. She knows a lot of her colors and almost all of her letters. It's so much fun to watch her take everything in, and it's even more fun to watch her get into pretend play with her dollhouse, dolls, and kitchen playset. She loves to bring us cups of tea.
The next big adventure is potty training. We'll see how that goes... we're going to try it next week after we get back from Tokyo. Hopefully we'll both still have our sanity by the end of the week. :)
Hong Kong, here we come!
We leave Sunday for Hong Kong. We are staying for five nights, two in Kowloon and three out on Lantau Island (the island where Disney is). I don't know why, but Hong Kong is someplace that I've always wanted to visit. Evidently my dad thinks that I'm nuts for paying to fly to another big city when Tokyo is just a quick train ride away. :) But Hong Kong has one of the most famous skylines in the world, along with some of the most famous shopping in the world - sounds like a great combination to me!
One reason that I am really looking forward to getting out of Yokosuka for a few days is the stupid weather that we've been having. It's been about 40-45 and rainy here for about the last 10 days straight (with a couple days here and there to break it up). It's so nasty. Cold, wet, gray... I miss snow. At least snow is pretty and you don't get as wet. And you can play in it. All you want to do with this rain is stay inside. But it's supposed to be 70 and partly to mostly sunny in Hong Kong while we're there - yippee!!!
I am also excited because we will be spending a day at Hong Kong Disney. This will be Miriam's first Disney experience, so it should be interesting. HK Disney is supposed to be uncrowded and to have short lines, though - perfect for a toddler. I can't wait to get a picture of her flying in Dumbo or spinning in the teacups. :)
So Hong Kong, here we come - and at this point it can't be soon enough!
Miriam is 2!
I can't believe it - I am the mother of a 2-year-old! We had Miriam's birthday party yesterday (Friday the 30th here) and we all had a great time. It was very low-key and unstructured, which I think it perfect for this age. :)
I have been reflecting a lot on the past two years, trying to remember what it was like when Miriam was born. It's been so amazing watching her grow into the beautiful little girl that she is becoming. It amazes me how much they change in those first two years - from helpless baby who is totally dependent on us for everything, to independent toddler whose favorite phrase is "by myself".
We have many adventures ahead of us this year. We will be moving in April into a bigger place because our family will be expanding in July. Yes, Miriam is going to become a big sister this year! We are excited for this next step, and if you ask her she will tell you that she wants a "bo-oy". Somewhere in there we will also have to transition her to a "big girl bed" and to contend with potty training - ahhh, the joys of parenting a toddler. :)
Merry Christmas!
We just wanted to take a chance to wish everyone a "Merry Christmas" and a "Happy New Year". We enjoyed Christmas this year, and Miriam wasn't afraid of the wrapping paper like she was last year. She is enjoying all of her new toys, and we are enjoying watching her play with them - we can see her imagination developing, and it's so much fun! We spread our Christmas out over two mornings this year so that we could open presents "with" our families over the webcam. This turned out to be a good idea because Miriam's attention span for actually unwrapping presents is not very long. :)
We hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas, and we wish everyone a joyous and healthy start to the new year!
It's been too long!
Wow.. I was looking through and noticed that we haven't posted any pictures from October OR November yet! I owe Joe a batch of cookie press cookies tonight, but after that I will work on uploading general pics from October and November. Hopefully Joe will get on the ball soon and post pics of when my mom & dad were here, too. :)
We can't believe that Christmas is this Thursday! It's hard to believe that this is Miriam's second Christmas already. She is getting to be so big, and her words are becoming clearer and clearer (although it still takes us two or three times to get what she's saying sometimes). She loves our Christmas tree, and I am excited to see her reaction on Christmas morning.

Home Again
Well, we are back from a few days in Tokyo. We started our visit with a wonderful Sunday brunch at the New Sanno. Then we attempted to go to the Tokyo Tower. I say "attempted"... we made it there, but wow, was it crowded! Monday was a Japanese national holiday (Culture Day), and there was a two-day festival going on at the Tower. The line to buy tickets to go up wrapped around the base of the Tower - crazy. There was also a crowd waiting for a concert to start, and Picachu was posing for pictures with kids of all ages. Of course, there were Christmas decorations all around as well, since Christmas season begins the week before Halloween.
Monday we ventured to Ueno zoo and Asakusa Kanon temple, both of which were very crowded with people enjoying their day off. On Tuesday I took mom to my favorite fabric store in Shibuya where we both spent too much money, and Wednesday we went out to the Imperial Gardens before coming home. We also swam in the chilly hotel pool nearly every day, which Miriam greatly enjoyed.
Now we are home again, to enjoy our last week before Mom & Dad head back to the States. I know that Miriam will be sad to see them go.
Visitors!
My (Jen's) parents are here to visit. So far we have traveled to Kyoto and Hiroshima via the Shinkansen (bullet train). We are headed to Tokyo this Sunday for a wonderful brunch at the New Sanno and to see some sights. Miriam is so happy to have her Grandma and Pop-Pop here, and Joe and I are enjoying watching their reactions to how the Japanese people react to Miriam when they see her ("kawaii, kawaii"). :)
A Much-needed Update!
We have been pretty busy since we got back from Australia. I have been busy with school, AWANA has started back up, and Joe is keeping busy with various activities as well. I have finally taken a few minutes to download pictures from the camera and I am in the process of uploading them for your viewing pleasure. :)
I made a photo book!
As Joe's been working on getting pictures edited and posted as a normal album, I've been working on putting together a photo book of our time in Australia. So for a slightly different perspective, take a look at it (bottom of the right column on this page). Now that I've finished it, I guess it's time to get back to schoolwork - ugh!
We're back from Australia!
We made it back from Australia on Tuesday night around 10:15pm. It wasn't a bad flight - Miriam actually slept for a few hours. She was so tired by the time we got back, and has been catching up on her sleep since we've been home. It was a little tricky with all of us in the same room at the hotels - she didn't necessarily want to stay in her crib all night. So sometimes we all shared a bed, sometimes we rubbed her back to help her get to sleep, sometimes we sat down by her crib. Fortunately it doesn't look like any of the bad habits stuck, since she is sleeping great in her own crib again since we've been home.
We all had a lot of fun on our trip. Joe is working on editing pictures and getting them ready to post. He will post at least some before he leaves Sunday for the to head Stateside for training. We went to the Sydney Zoo, toured the Opera House, biked around the Olympic Park area, did a lunch cruise around Sydney Harbour, played at the big playground in Darling Harbour, played in the fountains in Cairns, visited the rainforest via Skyrail (a cable line over the treetops, like a very high enclosed ski lift), walked through the butterfly house, rode the scenic railway back down through the rainforest, snorkled at the Great Barrier Reef, shopped, and ate. I also managed to watch one of my classes and write a paper while we were there!
Now it's back to normal life again... Miriam and I went to PT Tots today, and we have playgroup tomorrow. I need to go work on another paper for school, so I guess I will sign off for now. It's good to be home... I guess. :)
What have I gotten myself into...?
I'm starting to think that I've taken on too much this fall... so far I have: (1) Oakleaf treasurer, (2) AWANA T&T Director, (3) my first class toward my PhD, and (4) slides for the chapel service that we attend. Plus all of our typical social engagements, and all of the fun stuff that Miriam and I do like PT Tots and playgroup. Whew - it's going to be a BUSY fall!
Joe Made it to the Top!
Joe climbed Mt. Fuji this week! He went with a group of about 30 people from the dental department. About half of them made it to the top of the mountain, where they were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise amidst a very large crowd. He got some great pictures, which will be posted soon. He said that he was "glad that he got to do it, but it's not something that he especially wants to do again."
Our Next Big Trip!
I (Jen) am so excited! We have had a lot of fun this summer so far, and we have a busy end to the summer coming up. In a few weeks I will be running the craft station for VBS at the Chapel here, and then immediately after the last day of VBS we will be heading to the airport to board a plane for Australia! We are so excited - Australia is somewhere that Joe and I have always wanted to visit! We will be spending six nights in Sydney, and then four more nights in Cairns. We are looking forward to taking (and sharing) lots of pictures while we're there!
