Mission Statement
Community Market
Intention
The Friends of Belle-Rivière (FBR) mission is to assist the residents of Belle-Rivière, Haiti in the long-term development of their community by meeting basic human needs for food, clean water, health, education, and sustainable commerce. It is essential that these goals are accomplished through representatives of the community. In Haiti projects are prioritized and facilitated by a group of local coordinators called Team for the Progress of the Community (TPC). FBR seeks to equip this group with organization, perspective, connection, and resource.
Vision
Our goal is to alleviate unnecessary human suffering by helping to provide residents of this mountain community with access to the essentials of living: health/sanitation, clean water, nutritious food, education, and economic opportunity. We strive to inform and empower community leaders so that through their knowledge, skill, and resource they become the spark of change which flames progress throughout the community. We hope to establish a lasting foundation for community development based on environmentally friendly solutions which produce a higher quality of life for both present and future generations.
Roots
Friends of B-R, Inc. evolved from the outreach efforts of Friends of Awakening, an Indianapolis-based meditation group seeking ways to benefit those in extreme need based on the following resolutions:
1. To be aware of the suffering caused by exploitation and social injustice.
2. To seek ways to cultivate loving kindness and work for the well-being of others.
3. To practice generosity by sharing time, energy and material resources with those in need.
Assumptions
1. We will respect the beliefs and cultural values of our collaborators. The manner in which we find shared solutions is at least as important as the solutions themselves.
2. Our humanity unites us in our challenges and struggles. The ultimate success of a project will be measured by the dignity, personal empowerment, and independence it promotes.
3. Each individual can make a difference, every effort sends a message, every effort counts, however small.
