Nature Journal

From the Intern's Desk

It has been a joyful experience to be able to walk through nature preserves and discovering so many wonderful things.  One of which explorations resulted in a one-on-one visit with Thelma the squirrel and I.   Walking down the Cedar Creek Trail this morning I was in the process of collecting hickory shells and acorns to use for ACRES Christmas tree decorations. Beautiful fall day, in fact it felt like spring!  Most of my photos have been from daily visits from Thelma and her pals on the deck of ACRES office, however this time I was lucky enough to be less than 20 feet from her as she squandered for the same nuts under wet leaves that laid on the forest floor.   I moved quietly on the path squatting so as not to disturb her afternoon quandary.  Every now and then she would look toward me as if trying to decipher if I were a threat or if I were a familiar.   It was quite comical over the next few minutes as she continued to dig for her treasure in the brush.  Needless-to-say it was quite the experience to actually capture a moment with her in the preserves.  Hope you enjoy the pictures!

From the Intern's Desk . . .

Dear Friends of Cedar Creek,

I wanted to share with you first my appreciation, and second an observation as I work on the Friends of Cedar Creek website from the basement of the ACRES Land Trust office.  It seems I have a couple of wonderful little co-workers that visit me every morning. Two little chipmunks play without a care in the world on the basement patio outside of the picture window.  If they would sit still long enough for a picture I would love to share their darling antics with you.  Albeit they seem oblivious to me watching from the corner of my eye, playing hide in seek in the wood pile outside, it is obvious that they are collecting nuts and winter food as well. Each morning the chipmunk, Chester as I call him, sits at the top of the wood pile and eats breakfast with me.  When the afternoon sun sweeps across the foliage of the ACRES facility Chester and a playmate, whom I have not had a good view of yet, play in the tall yarrow and forget-me-nots scattered in their infinante wonder.  Taking all of this glorious beauty in, I realize how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to assist in building the website for all of you to enjoy.  Thanks to Al Diefenbach and ACRES for allowing me to take part.  And thank you members of Friends of Cedar Creek for the warm welcome at the first meeting I was able to attend September 22nd.  Please enjoy the website and share your photos and journal entries as well!

Sincerely,

Heather Baker
