Here's what's happening...

Pathway to the Pavilion - Eagle Scout Project

This week, a young Scout named Brandon, will begin Phase I of the Pathway to the Pavilion Eagle Scout project. This project entails building a path from the south side parking lot to the smaller pavilion. The path will be made from pavers and will enable park visitors to access the pavilion more easily.

Brandon's hope, and the Friends' too, is that another Scout or other organization, will work with us to complete Phase II of the project which would connect this path to another one that would lead to the Ellsworth Pavilion. This would make both pavilions accessible.

The Phase I work will be completed next weekend and provide accessibility and be a nice enhancement to our park by the river. I walked through the south side last Friday night and made a list of tasks to work on during our spring cleaning on June 3rd and noted a few projects that are available if anyone is interested in sponsoring another project at the park. I'll do a walk-thru of the north side later to do the same.

Some project ideas/opportunities on the south side include:

1. Garden spots / Memorial Gardens

2. Baseball diamond & backstop repair

3. Flag pole painting, flag & solar spot light

4. Bush removal & replacement (bushes or perennial flowers)

5. Wood stacking rack for fire ring (few logs to go with it would be great too)

6. Pavement repairs of a couple holes in the driveway

7. Picnic table replacement

8. Children's playground - our swing set stands empty due to safety risks :(

9. Building of a fireplace. We could use brick from Cork school if someone can help with this effort. Definitely need a mason to help with this one! If we didn't use the bricks, we could each contribute a stone and collectively have enough to build a pretty nice fireplace. I know we have enough rocks around here to do something like that.

There are more projects too, so if you're interested or know of someone who can help, please let me, or another Friend, know. We can work together to make this park an even greater place than it already is. Everyone has something to offer, whether it be knowledge, experience, a helping hand or a financial donation - - all help is welcome and so greatly appreciated by the Friends, the community and those who come to Ashtabula county for a visit.

Hope you all enjoyed the weekend...

Spring has sprung and the Easter Bunny is on it's way!

Good Morning and Happy Spring!

We've had spring-like weather for a couple weeks now but today officially marks the beginning of Spring!  We’ve had such a pleasant winter and we could still be in for yet another snow but while this weather is here, I say we celebrate it!

Last week, I was on my way to work and it was so beautiful that I drove out of my way just to drive through the bridge where I saw the morning sun beaming through the trees; glistening on the water.  I parked the car, jumped out and snapped a few pictures with my phone camera.  It was just one of those moments that make you stop and appreciate the beauty around you.  I was simply in awe of it all...

If you're out & about this Friday, stop by the Harpersfield Community Center this Friday  from 5 - 7 pm for the Lenten Fish Fry sponsored by HVFD.  They put on a great dinner and it’s always fun to catch up with friends and neighbors while you’re there.  My family and I will be there and you’ll find me visiting with the other “Friends” who also lend a hand there.  There are only 2 more Fish Fry's left before Easter so come out and have some fun!

Yes, Easter is right around the corner and hopefully, the chance of snow will be further behind us.  Soon that Easter Bunny will be hopping on down to Harpersfield so make sure you take the kids out for the Easter Egg Hunt on April 1st.  I've included the details for you below. The kids love all the excitement of hunting for those brightly colored eggs!

Well, that’s all I have time for now; have to get to work.  You’ll hear from me again soon, though.  Until then, hope you get out and soak up some sunshine!!!

Your “Friend”,

Denise

One Heartbeat...

The continued unity that I see in Chardon reminds me of that within our own Harpersfield community. We, like them, stand together through the trials we face and this gives us strength. My wish for our neighbors in Chardon today and during the difficult days ahead, is that they have strength, peace, and days filled only with love. One Heartbeat, standing strong together...

Thinking of our neighbors in Chardon...

May the children, their families and the victims' families in Chardon find strength and peace today as the children return to school.

What a Great Day!

Good Morning!

Well, despite the bitter cold, people braved those frigid temps & slippery roads to come out and support the Covered Bridge Park on Sunday. The hall was abuzz with people talking, laughing and participating in the 50/50 raffle, chinese auction and snagging those Dinner on the River raffle tickets.  It amazes me just how generous and supportive people are even though we always have a great turnout.  It touches my heart each and every time.

I've noticed that we continue to see the same loyal faces at every event (true dedication) but I'm also starting to see people from neighboring communities come out to support our park.  We're also gaining additional support from local officials as well as some that represent the state of Ohio.  That tells me that the word is getting out and that we must be doing something that is adding value that people appreciate.  That is, after all, our goal here! :)

I'd like to thank everyone who donated items for our Chinese Auction, baked those delicious cakes & cupcakes, volunteered to help at the event and of course, joined us for pasta & meatballs on a very  brrrr-ish wintery day!  The Friends of the Park appreciate all that you do to help us preserve and enhance our beautiful gem of a park by the river.  We cannot do it without YOU!!!

Have a great day!

Snowflakes & Cakes...

Woke up this morning to a beautiful blanket of snow! It's a perfect day for baking cakes for the Pasta Dinner tomorrow.  Making a Red Velvet Cake with cinnamon buttercream, a Sour Cream Lemon cake with a light, lemon cream cheese icing, a Southern Caramel cake and one more cake but haven't decided on the flavor.

Maybe a Raspberry Jell-O cake using my Grandma's recipe.  It's quick to put together and is oh, so delicious.  In fact, when I was growing up, I would bake cakes and my Mom & brother would wake up in the middle of the night and sneak a piece from the kitchen.  One time, there was only one piece of Jell-O cake left and my Mom snuck into the kitchen to steal that last piece only to find that my brother had beat her to it!

Hope you all stay warm & cozy on this wintry day today!  See you at dinner tomorrow...

‎909 - Nine Hundred and Nine

That's how many meatballs "The Friends" made in anticipation of an even bigger turnout for this year's Pasta Dinner to benefit the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park. Remember, all proceeds will be used to Keep our Park Beautiful!

Heroes and their Families during the Holidays

Looking for a way to give a special gift to someone in need this year?  Want to pay it forward in some small way or do you just feel like doing something really nice (in hopes of moving up on Santa's "Nice List")?

If so, your "Friends" at the Covered Bridge Park can help you do this!  We will be hosting an Operation Homefront drive during the Covered Bridge Christmas event this Saturday.  Your donation of food or money will greatly help military families in need.  You can also sit down and write a caring note (or draw a picture) to send to the members of our U.S. military, veterans and their families, many of whom will be far away from home this holiday season.

We know that times are tough all over.  Many people are unable to spend the holidays with their loved ones and just need to know that someone cares.  Others don't have enough money to put food on the table on a daily basis or enjoy a festive meal with their family on Christmas.

If you would like to reach out and make a difference in someone's life, please bring a donation of food or money with you on Saturday.  Take a moment to say hello to someone far away or simply have your child draw a cheerful picture to send to our heroes this Christmas.  What a great way to teach our children how to care, share and help others.  That's what this community is all about.  We do it with each other throughout the year.  I think we can extend our circle of concern and care beyond the boundaries of Harpersfield and let our heroes, veterans and their families around the world know we're here for them just as they are there for us!

Covered Bridge Christmas - This Saturday, December 3rd, at 5 pm

Join us this Saturday, December 3rd, for our 2nd Annual Holiday Lighting ceremony.  As you know, our holiday lights fell victim to scrooge-like vandals last December so we had to replace all of our holiday lights.

This year, we have added new lighting to our Christmas tree and to the bridge thanks to  generous donations that were made and also from support received from those who participated in the Light up the Bridge fundraiser dinner held last February.

So, join us on Saturday, as we celebrate the simple joys of an old-fashioned Covered Bridge Christmas. Watch the children’s eyes sparkle as Santa arrives to illuminate the Christmas tree and the bridge with a breathtaking view, and of course, the sound, of the Harpersfield dam as a backdrop!

Visit with friends and family while feasting on homemade soups & chili. Sample the tasty Christmas treats with a toasty cup of hot chocolate.  Cap the evening’s festivities with a visit and photos with Santa, along with extra surprises along the way.  It’s the perfect way to celebrate the season, and it’s only at the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park!

Do I hear your voice in Buffalo? Yes, I do and it's all about our Dam...

Good Morning.

We have an another opportunity to share our concern and love for the Harpersfield Dam. The Buffalo District of the US Army Corps of Engineers will be reviewing the deterioration of the Harpersfield Dam and is requesting our comments within 30 days. However, the case was opened on November 4th, so we have to act quickly.

Please take a moment to share your thoughts and concerns for our dam. Also, I ask that you pass this along to your friends and family who enjoy and find value in having this dam as an integral part of our community today, appreciate its history and look forward to sharing it with our children and grandchildren in the future.

Fall Fun at the Covered Bridge Park!

Hello and Happy Fall!  Just wanted to catch you up on all that’s been happening at the park lately.  The setting for the Fall Fest and the Bark at the Bridge event was absolutely beautiful with the colors of autumn seen along the rushing waters of the river. The rain gave us the reprieve needed to allow both the kids and the pooches to parade around the park in their favorite Halloween costumes.

This year's Fall Fest once again had an extra large bonfire, the reading of the book It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schulz and fun rides over the river and through the bridge (Yes, Thanksgiving is just around the corner). Treats were handed out and all kids who wore their costumes were given a special prize to add to the excitement of the evening. We were also visited by the Great Pumpkin of Harpersfield, again too! We had to do a few work-arounds due to soggy grounds and some equipment issues but that didn't prevent the kids, young and old alike, from having a fun-filled night!

This past weekend, Marsha Vandervort of The Green Leash, sponsored the first "Bark at the Bridge" event. Many people and their furry, four-legged canine friends, turned out for the dog walk. The walk started at the south side of the park and went right through the middle of the covered bridge and circled around at the far end of the north side of the park and concluded back on the south side of the park.

There were smiles, laughter and friendly barks heard all around. The dogs (and their families) played a few dog-friendly games and were given a treat bag to take home with them. A costume contest was held for dogs under 30 pounds and also for dogs over 30 pounds with the two winners each taking home a 30 pound bag of dog food courtesy of Marsha and TheGreenLeash.com.

The Heel ‘N Time Canine Drill Team gave a great Broadway performance to entertain the crowd after the long stroll through the park.

The Lake Humane Society was onsite with a couple furry friends just begging for a loving family to adopt them.  If you would like to adopt a pet from Lake Humane Society, call 440-951-6122 or check out the available pets online at http://lakehumane.org/adopt.html for more information.

It’s been a busy, but fun, couple weeks at the park.  The leaves are falling and the temps are dropping which means the holiday season is fast approaching.  The Friends of the Covered Bridge Park are actively working to prepare for the lighting of our Christmas Tree and of course, the covered bridge, too, thanks to all those who supported the lighting of the bridge Pasta dinner fundraiser earlier this year.  The Covered Bridge Christmas event will be held on Saturday, December 3rd and that will be the final event at the park in 2011.  Santa will stop by to visit the children and pose for a few photos.   If you would like to donate cookies or volunteer to help with this special holiday event, give me a call or send me an e-mail.  Helping hands are always welcome and very much appreciated!

Have a great day!

What's happening?

So, I finally made the time to upload the pictures from the Covered Bridge Festival to our site.  The sunny weather in the pictures isn't warming my chilly toes as I sit here at my kitchen table at nearly 2 AM trying to catch all of you up on latest happenings at the park.  My apologies to  you.  I really should have posted these pictures sooner.  Life is so busy...

Anyway, the Covered Bridge Festival couldn't have happened on a more beautiful weekend.  It was gorgeous and as result, many people stopped by our bridge.  On Saturday, not only did we see the beautiful leaves on the trees surrounding the bridge but many, and I do mean many, corvettes passed through our bridge.  People were very friendly and we had quite a few artists and crafters on site for people to visit with and shop from.

Sunday's weather was just as beautiful and the temp was right around 80 degrees.  Sunday's weather brought out even more people including about 250 motorcycles.  The sight of that many bikes at once was really something to see.  Everyone was friendly and really seemed to be having a good time.  Next year, I plan to have even more artists, crafters and such at the festival.  Just got my feet wet this year but next year will be great - - watch and see!

Since one of the other "Friends" and I were there at the festival, we took the opportunity to introduce ourselves and this wonderful "Friends" group to our visitors.  We had about 8 people join our communications list and hopefully, some of them will become more involved in the care of our park.  The Friends group is very small in number and we sure could use some extra helping hands and we always welcome the opportunity to get to know people better.  We can all use a few more friends now, can't we?

Well, it is getting late so I should be getting into bed sometime soon.  Check out these pictures from the Covered Bridge Festival.  I'll be uploading some other photos soon from our Fall Fest that we have coming up this Saturday, October 22nd.  I hope you can join us for the bonfire, hayrides, the reading of the story, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and more.  We're inviting all kids to come in their "not too scary" costumes and we'll have a prize for each child who wears their costume to the park.  Hope to see you at the Fall Fest from 6 - 9 PM this Saturday.

Night all...

Your "Friend",

Denise Weinmann

Hurry and let your voice be heard to preserve our dam - Deadline 10/3/11

Meeting regarding the Harpersfield Dam - 9/22/11

Last Thursday, September 22nd, a meeting was held to discuss the dam at the Covered Bridge Park in Harpersfield.  I was unable to attend the meeting but I am told that there were about 30 people in attendance which included approximately 7 government agency officials and the rest were concerned local residents.

The officials said they are recommending that the dam be restored rather than relocated.  It is estimated that the dam is about 100 years old and that it could fail at any given time but no one can determine when the failure might occur.

The main cost to restore the dam and the "match" will be covered by 2 government agencies; the Federal portion would be covered by the Army Corps of Engineers and the Non-Federal portion would be covered by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.  Ashtabula County MetroParks role would be to allow them to come in and do the restoration work.

Despite the fact that funding might be approved at all levels, there is no guarantee that the funds would be available for the restoration.  They do, however, expect that the work will be done because the dam plays a key role in keeping lamprey eels under control.

If you would like help make the case for this restoration and help keep a dam in place in Harpersfield,  please send your comments and concerns to:

Michael.J. Greer@usacce.army.mil

Kevin.Kratt@tetratech.com

Do hurry and let the officials hear your voice as the deadline for public commentary is OCTOBER 3rd.  We have a wonderful treasure in this dam, the covered bridge and the park itself.  Let's all work together to protect, preserve and make this park a better place for everyone!

Thank you for your support.

Star Beacon Article: They get no respect by Carl E. Feather

The Star Beacon; Ashtabula, Ohio

September 25, 2011

They get no respect

Ashtabula County’s covered bridges abused with graffiti, trash, weeds

By CARL E. FEATHER - cfeather@starbeacon.com
Star Beacon

— Despite the thousands of dollars spent annually to promote our 18 covered bridges to tourists, Ashtabula County’s crown jewels are being abused and neglected.

Take the Middle Road Bridge in Monroe Township, for example. Until two weeks ago, when a volunteer from the Covered Bridge Festival Committee tackled the mess, tall weeds grew along the approaches to the bridge and blocked the view from the south side. A tacky tourism brochure dispenser, resembling the kind perched in front of foreclosed homes, stood near the entrance.

Piles of trash, including broken glass and discarded paint cans, were all around the bridge. Grape vines grew up both sides of it.

Inside the 1868 structure, graffiti, including vulgar messages, are on the portals. Even the identity sign bears red “Metalica” graffiti.

At the Mechanicsville Road bridge in Austinburg Township, the bridge, which was the subject of $540,000 renovation just seven years ago, sports tacky holiday decorations and strings of lights far past their prime. Tall weeds surround the bridge on the north side.

At Creek Road, fishermen leave entrails in the trash barrel, creating a stench that draws flies and discourages visitors. A while back, a hunter gutted a deer a few yards from the bridge.

Even the flagship of Ashtabula County’s covered bridge fleet, the $7.8 million Smolen-Gulf Bridge, is a victim of vandalism. Its timbers have become the repository for information that marker-wielding visitors feel compelled to share with the world.

Incredibly, someone even had the stamina and nerve to risk to leave some graffiti behind on the center support, about 90 feet above the river. County Engineer Tim Martin said it appears as if the artist climbed off the bridge and onto the pier in order to paint their message on the concrete support. It is likely that message will be there for the Covered Bridge Festival, which takes place in two weeks.

Mark Winchell, executive director of the Ashtabula County Visitors and Convention Bureau, said his family visited the Windsor Township bridge earlier this year and he was “appalled” at the graffiti on the bridge, which was renovated several years ago.

“It’s been incredibly abused,” Winchell said.

Tim Martin said his crews are visiting the bridges as the festival weekend approaches and addressing issues where possible. He said maintenance of the right-of-way around the structures is the county’s responsibility, and a special effort is made to have them looking good for the festival. The maintenance includes working with area fire departments to hose down the interiors and remove the gravel that gets carried into the bridges on tires.

While getting them in shape for the annual festival is a no-brainer, Winchell said there is a need to make sure they look their best throughout the year.

“We pay all this money to promote this region and to promote our covered bridges, if people come here and our bridges look shabby, that’s something we need to address,” Winchell said.

“I’m guessing from the phone calls that we’ve had, there are people who want to visit the bridges in other than October,” said Connie Bayt, director/office manager of the Covered Bridge Festival Committee in Jefferson. Bayt, who has been on the job just two weeks, said she’d like to find ways to ensure that the bridges look just as good in February or June as they do the second weekend of October.

Board of Commissioners President Daniel Claypool said they have not received any complaints about the condition or appearance of the bridges and their environment, aside from one issue with an approach at the South Denmark Road bridge.

Winchell said residents can become acclimated to eyesores, just as a homeowner gets used to seeing a broken window pane or weed next to the front door.

“You need someone with fresh eyes who can really notice these things, and our visitors are those people,” he said. “If they come here and visit one or two bridges and don’t like what they see, they are going move on and leave the county.”

Bayt said committee members who have visited the bridges in preparation for the festival recently raised the issue of how bad some of the bridges look. She said some of the committee members indicated a willingness to  take on the task of cutting grass and weeds, but they are concerned about overstepping their bounds. Property owners around the bridges frequently post signs threatening trespassers who dare venture off the 30-foot right-of-way that extends from the center of the road. Tourists may view the signs as threatening and discourage shutterbugs from seeking alternative angles of the bridges. Even going in the river to snap a picture can be trespassing as the land under the water is private property.

Bayt said that bridge committee chairmen and women — the people who head up the committees that sponsor events at the bridges during the festival — have taken on the task of performing regular maintenance to make sure their community treasures look great year around.

For example, at the Root Road bridge in Monroe Township, several volunteers from that committee applied a fresh coat of paint to the fence and guards around the bridge and keep the weeds and grass in check.

Others have not been as respectful of the legacies entrusted to them. Martin said the department gave permission to a group that wanted to decorate the Mechanicsville Road bridge for the holidays, but long after the decorations went up, they still hang on the bridge and destroy its appearance except for those few December evenings when the strings of lights are plugged in.

“We had sent a letter to them requesting that they remove that,” Martin said. “It really was an eyesore. But I don’t think at this point, it’s getting close to the Christmas season, that they will be coming down.”

Winchell said he wants to initiate dialogue between the engineer, Covered Bridge Festival Committee and his group to find ways to make sure the bridges are kept top form year-around. He suggested a program where community groups, schools or seniors could adopt a bridge and keep a diligent eye on it for trash, graffiti and other issues. And he said every county resident has a responsibility to make sure they take pride in their lakefront, covered bridges and other assets that bring tourists and their dollars to the county.

“As a community, we have to take a little bit of pride in what we have here,” he said.

From Acoustic Folk Music to Bark at the Bridge...

The annual Music Along the River was, again, a big success.  This year, the music was the focus, however, arts & crafts proved to be a great accompaniment. Musicians, from all over, filled the park with acoustic folk melodies, while artists and crafters displayed their creations for all to see and even take home with them if they chose to do so.  The event wrapped up with a performance from the ever popular, Smokin' Fez Monkeys, which brought people to their feet dancing all around. Thank you to all who participated in this event and those who worked so hard to make this a great time for all!

For more info on the Smokin Fez Monkeys, visit them at:  http://www.smokinfezmonkeys.com/

Next up on the calendar is the Bark at the Bridge event on October 1st.  If you love dogs and would like to lend a hand to bring this first annual dog event to the park, speak now.  Marsha Vandervort, of The Green Leash, is coordinating and sponsoring this event. The event will provide dogs and their humans, an opportunity to socialize and play around in the park.  We always have dogs showing their support by attending our events so we thought we would throw a pooch party just for them (oh, and their owners, too!).  If you would like to learn more about how you can help plan for or attend this event, contact Marsha at 440-466-7930.

Thanks and have a great day!

Custom Classic Cruisers Car Show: A truly great show!!!

What a great day and such a good turnout at the Custom Classic Cruisers Car Show last Saturday at the park. The weather was perfect and the cars, and their owners, were awesome. Approximately 100 cars rolled into the park last Saturday and lined up right along the river and filled up the field as well. We had people from all over join us that day and had some unique cars too. Picnic tables were stacked with prizes to make the event well worth the ride in. This was the "Friends" first time hosting the Custom Classic Cruisers sponsored car show but let me say it was a great pleasure and such an honor as well. These folks really know how to put on a great show! We gladly welcome them back next year!

Dinner has been served...

The winner of the Dinner on the River, Mr. Jim Compton, and his friends were served a delectable surf & turf dinner Saturday night right on the river.  Actually, the dining area was situated more "in" the river than on the river.  Jim and his guests were seated on a large flat rock that was surrounded by the waters of the Grand River with the sounds of water rushing over the dam and a small waterfall nearby.

The tables were set with fine china, glass stemware, and cloth napkins. Each table was adorned with candles and a large, fresh bouquet of summer hydrangeas.  A one pound steak, lobster tail, roasted red potatoes and green beans were plated as if they were artwork set on a china canvas.  The site was absolutely spectular.

Guests were entertained by Mr. Ken Accord whose melodic voice filled the span from one river bank to the other which was the final touch needed to set just the right ambiance for the evening.

The Dinner on the River event was truly a great success. I would like to thank everyone who gave their time and worked so hard to make this dinner event a delight for Jim Compton and his friends and family. I would like to give special thanks to Ken Accord, Jamie Cordova of the Spire Institute, and Mr. & Mrs. Butch Bilicic of Bilicic's Busy Mart for their time and generous donations.  I would also like to thank Mr. Everett Henry, the Chief of the Harpersfield Volunteer Fire Department, for allowing us to draw and announce the winner of the Dinner on the River raffle at this year's annual Beef Roast.

The Friends of the Covered Bridge Park appreciate the continued support of all those who participated in this raffle as well as those who help with and attend the other fundraising events we hold.  We need to work together to take care of this beautiful park of ours and we, the "Friends", cannot do this without the help of people like you!

Dinner of the River Raffle Winner Announced...

The winner of the Dinner of the River raffle was drawn at the Harpersfield Beef Roast last week.  Congratulations goes out to Mr. Jim Compton.  We look forward to serving up a surf & turf feast for Jim and nine of his friends and family!

Fun was had by all at the 2011 Harpers-Field Day Event!

Hello!

Just thought I'd pop in to let you know how our big day went last Saturday at the park.  As expected, Jungle Terry, drew in quite a crowd and all were eager to see what friends he brought to share.  If you check out the Pictures section on our web site, you will see just how many he brought with him.  There was a huge python, a tortoise that is big enough to use as a step-stool, the infamous, 22 pound albino skunk, a chinchilla & much, much more!

The Off Your Rockers Band entertained us early in the day and then most stayed to play with us the rest of the day which was great.

The Wii Bowling Competition provided a video game challenge that resulted in 5 prize packages being awarded.  These packages consisted of free bowling, shoes, pizza & beverages all sponsored by our local favorite bowling hangout, Sonny Lanes!

Local vendors were there offering information on how people can help Save the Old Tavern, Echerd's Magical Imaging & More provided free face painting for the kids, Robinson's Apple Barn was there to hand out colorful balloons to brighten the day and the Mentor Area Radio Control Society (MARC) provided flying fun in the sky for all to see.  Kids were climbing all over the firetruck and got to talk to a real firefighter, Steve Ozbolt, from the Harpersfield Volunteer Fire Department.  Lori Merkel, from Northwest Ambulance District (NAD), showed the ambulance equipment and talked with people about the equipment and services that NAD provides.

There were games for the very little ones like the Flippin' Frog & Dunkin' Duck game.  Kids (of all ages) could be seen participating in the 3 legged race, sack races, the belly ball race and performing all kinds of nifty maneuvers with hula-hoops.  Brings back memories of my Granddad with his hula-hoop & unicycle that he enjoyed well into his 70's.  Who says you have to be a "young" kid to play these games!

Dunkin Donuts sponsored our Donut Eating contest which was a riot to watch and even more fun to be a part of.  It wasn't the number of donuts eaten but the speed at which a participant could eat one donut which was hanging from a string. Oh, and no hands were ALLOWED.  For added fun, we filled the center of each donut with some whipped topping.  We snapped some great pics of this event that you'll undoubtedly enjoy seeing.  I think the adults enjoyed it even more than the kids.  It's not as easy as it looks - - I know.  Prior to the event, one of our "Friends", Mr. Jim Pristov, brought "test donuts" to our planning session and had me and fellow "Friend", Mark Mihalik, do a trial contest between the two of us.  The competition was stiff but I won!  I really think it was only because Mark was being a gentleman and let me win, though.  Maybe it was really because he didn't want to have the title of Fastest Donuting Eating Friend of the Park.   Hmm, I wonder about this now.  Guess I might be the loser, after all...  :(

Anyway, Harpers-Field Day was a ton of fun.  I'd like to thank Jungle Terry for donating his time and the companionship of all his friends to us and our guests at the park.  I'd also like to thank our sponsors, local vendors, NAD and HVFD for helping us host this festive event.  As always, I want to thank each and every person who stopped by the park that day for spending the day with the "Friends" team and for helping us make this first "Harpers-Field Day" a truly great day!!!

Harpers-Field Day is Tomorrow, Saturday, July 2nd

Happy Friday!

Tomorrow is the big day and the team is busy doing all that last minute stuff in preparation for our first annual Harpers-Field Day down at the park.

We have so many fun events planned.  We even tested a few out the Dangling Donut Eating Contest out ourselves and laughed the whole time!

The forecast calls for warm, sunny weather so a spot in the shade near the river seems like the place to be tomorrow.  If that doesn't keep you cool enough, you can grab a nice, cold glass of lemonade or take part in the water balloon toss - - that should chill things down a bit.

Well, it's back to work for me.  Still have treats & prizes to organize, need to make a big bowl of pasta salad and get those cupcakes baking.  Hope you all have a great Friday and we'll see you down at the park tomorrow!  Can't wait - - it's gonna be a blast!

A Dam Move? - Article From the Star Beacon on May 6, 2011 by Margie Trax

In case you didn't see the articles in the Star Beacon regarding the dam, here is a link and a copy for you to read here.

http://starbeacon.com/local/x340277318/A-dam-move

May 6, 2011

A dam move?

Harpersfield structure could be replaced, but in Lake County

HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP —  Fishermen angled their hooks in the murky waters of the Grand River on Thursday, casting their lines from the wooden sides of the Harpersfield Covered Bridge and off the river embankments.

The 100-year-old dam may not stay behind the old bridge, said Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem restoration project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Michael Greer, as engineers and Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials try to determine whether the dam should be “refortified or replaced.”

Replacement of the dam doesn’t mean it will be rebuilt in Ashtabula County, Greer said Thursday.

“Maybe,” he said. “Maybe the dam would be rebuilt in Ashtabula County but maybe not.”

ODNR documents reveal the dam could be moved 25 miles downstream to Lake County.

A dam feasibility study, as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, is under way, Greer said. Workers took four samples of bedrock from the river at the dam Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, said Tetra Tech water resources scientist William Carlson.

Greer said the relocation of the dam is being considered because of the dam’s age and need for maintenance.

“Right now, we are better trying to ascertain the condition of the dam,” he said. “Periodic inspections by the Ohio Environmental (Protection) Agency gave some preliminary indication that, at minimum, the dam needs some general maintenance and upkeep.”

The need to replace or upgrade the dam “is happening in the shadow of a larger problem,” Greer said.

The dam stops invasive sea lampreys from moving upstream. Sea lampreys are aggressive parasites to key predator species and game fish, like lake trout, whitefish, chub and lake herring.

“If the Harpersfield Dam were to fail — and that has been a concern for some time — it would have a lot of terrible consequences for the surrounding ecosystem,” Greer said. “The lamprey would get into a lot of great spawning areas, and the potential for a significant increase in this parasitic fish would skyrocket.”

Greer said the feasibility study is “in its infancy” and alternatives to moving the dam are possible.

Likely alternatives to replacing the dam include repairing or modifying the existing dam to maintain its current structure, which the USACE notes is effective in preventing sea lampreys upstream. Other alternatives include construction of a sea-lamprey trap at the dam and the construction of a second barrier and trap at another location downstream, USACE project specifications reveal.

Greer said there are economic benefits to a more-aggressive approach to the Great Lakes sea-lamprey problem.

“Improvements to prevent sea-lamprey passage and reproduction upstream — of the Harpersfield Dam on the Grand River — will prevent the need for lampricide treatments above the dam, saving $335,000 per treatment,” the project description reads.

Lampricide is used to control the sea lamprey population in the Grand River but is also lethal to “nontarget fish species,” USACE reports.

“The improvements (to the dam) will contribute to an overall lower sea-lamprey population in Lake Erie, which in turn improves the sustainability of valuable fisheries resources,” Greer said.

Reducing the number of sea lampreys could inhibit desirable steelhead trout from passing through as well, ODNR reports.

Greer said the feasibility study should be complete in June, but USACE won’t move forward without public input.

“There will be a lot of discussion, a lot of public input, to follow that feasibility study,” he said. “The Grand River has both wild and scenic designations, so we are treading carefully here. But as part of the study, we will seek input both formally and informally.”

These information meetings and public hearings have not been scheduled yet, he said.

Officials will Fight Dearly to Keep Dam - Article by Margie Trax, Star Beacon, May 6, 2011

Officials will fight dearly to keep dam

Busy Day at the Park...

Hello!

It was quite the busy day at the park last Saturday.  In addition to the spring cleaning, there was an Elmo themed baby's 1st birthday party, canoe races and a visit from the Ashtabula County Water Rescue Team.  The park was absolutely packed with people everywhere and cars lining the streets.

We had a good crowd show up to help us with the cleaning of the park.  Everyone worked together to rake leaves, pick up garbage and debris, trim trees and give the park a good spring cleaning.

Mark & Debbie Mihalik, of Eagle Excavating, brought in a backhoe to remove some overgrown bushes, broken tree limbs and also remove a picnic table from the river.  Yes, that's what I said, there was a concrete & wooden picnic table in the river.  I know we've had some high winds but I'm thinking it took more than a strong breeze to toss that table into the river.

Danny Cuccarro volunteered his time and his trencher to assist Clayton Warner and Mark Mihalik prep for some much needed electrical upgrades to the south side of the park.  We will have real lights, not my old camping lanterns, in the south side bathroom now!  Plus, our "Friends" group can prepare and serve food during events without losing power.  No more noise from generators anymore, either!

One of the park supporters offered to donate flower baskets to hang at the ends of the bridge while others volunteered to plant flowers beneath the park signs and other areas that could use a splash of color to brighten things up a bit.  Several people gave generous monetary donations while others were kind enough to donate food to feed the many hungry workers.  The lunch gave everyone an opportunity to rest, relax and enjoy each other's company.

We made some new friends at the park that day as there were several new faces that came out to help us tidy up the park.  We also met some of the people that were participating in the Lake Metroparks canoe races and had the opportunity to see the Ashtabula County Water Rescue Team in action as they were conducting their practice drills.

It really was a great day at the park.  Sunshine, familiar faces and a few new friends too.  Good food and lots of interesting activities on both sides of the river.  Thank you, everyone, for helping with our annual spring cleaning and for your continued interest and support of the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park.  Thanks to all of you, the park is open and ready for  everyone to enjoy.

We have many exciting events planned this year like the Grand River Cruze-In car show, a Family Fun Day with Jungle Terry, Dinner on the River (get your raffle tickets now!), and the annual Music Along the River event which will be accompanied with a wine tasting in late August.  It's going to be a "Grand" year down at the park by the river.  Check out our calendar to see what else we have planned for 2011.

Hope to see you at the park soon...

Sincerely,

Denise Weinmann

Chocolate Fest

The Friends were invited to attend the annual Chocolate Fest sponsored by the Geneva Rotary Club.  Janie Sibell made 200 delicious portions of chocolate covered hull-less popcorn decorated in all the bright colors of spring!  The brightly colored popcorn drew people in and while they munched on the popcorn, they learned all about the Friends and the work we're doing at the park.   Janie then enticed them to buy some of her all natural, homemade suet cakes, called "Tweety Treats", for our bird friends.  Janie donated half the proceeds from the sale of the Tweety Treats and some of her chocolate covered popcorn to the park.  Janie plans to continue the sale of the Tweety Treats at future events held at the park.  Thank you, Janie, for all the work you did to pull this thing together on short notice and thank you Jackie, Rhonda & Clayton for helping our guests at the Chocolate Fest learn more about us and our beautiful park!

Winterfest, Business Expo & Light the Covered Bridge Pasta Dinner!

February is going to be a busy month for the "Friends".  We will be participating in the Winterfest on February 5th in Geneva.  On February 17th, we will be attending the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and then on February 27th we will be hosting a Light the Covered Bridge Pasta Dinner to raise funds to replace the lights that were damaged just before Christmas.  These events will be an opportunity for us to increase awareness of the wonderful assets we have at the park, highlight the work & events that the "Friends" have done and also see if we can make a few new "Friends"!

If anyone is available to help out with these events, we'd love to have the help and the company is always a pleasure!  For more info or to volunteer, call Denise Weinmann at 440-477-5001 or send a quick note to FriendsoftheCoveredBridge@gmail.com.

The chill of winter...

It's a great time for planning and organizing and getting things done - - indoors!  That's exactly what the "Friends" team is doing.  We will be attending the Geneva Area Chamber Business Expo on Thursday, February 17th to show what our park has to offer, bring awareness to the work and activities the "Friends" are involved with and invite others to become a "Friend".  Hope to see you there...

A New Holiday Tradition begins at the Covered Bridge Park!

Friends, family & neighbors all gathered at the park on December 4th to ring in the holiday season.  The party started with a social gathering 'round the bonfire and of course, near all the chili, soup and the "keep your hands warm" walking tacos.  Holiday hayrides and a cozy shuttle ride carried the many visitors from the south side of the park over the river and through the covered bridge to the north side of the park.  There, the voices of the Geneva High School Choir filled the chilly night air as they gave the gift of music to all nearby.

As promised, Santa made his arrival but not in a sleigh with all his reindeer but riding instead in a John Deere Gator; truly a country christmas carriage!  Santa was greeted by all the little children who were more than delighted to see the jolly man in the red & white suit!

Santa invited the children, young and old, to join him in a countdown to the lighting of the tree.  Cheers and clapping welcomed the beautifully lit tree that will grace the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park throughout this holiday season.

Despite the chill of the wintery evening, people stayed on to visit with Santa, participate in the many raffles offered, toss a few snowballs, and sip on warm apple cider as they enjoyed the holiday cookies that formed a bright & festive spread themselves!

A new tradition has been started with this First Annual Covered Bridge Christmas.  This tradition, like the beautiful new tree overlooking the river, will live on for years to come. The Friends of the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park will continue their work to improve the park and offer more community centered events like this one.

The Friends of the Covered Bridge Park would like to thank everyone who joined us that snowy evening and would also like to thank the many generous people who gave donations of food, prizes, their time and effort to make this festive event such a success!

Covered Bridge Christmas! Saturday, 12/4 at 5:00 PM

Tomorrow is the big day! The bridge is adorned with bright lights, wreaths, and holiday bows.  The Christmas Tree holds Christmas ball decorations of many colors but the lighting of the tree tomorrow night will truly brighten up our park by the river.

Santa has made time in his BUSY schedule to visit all the good little boys & girls at the Covered Bridge Park in Harpersfield.  I hear that he's anxious to talk with them and hear all their holiday wishes!

Holiday Hayrides will be a source of transportation and enjoyment as people pass through the covered bridge from one side of the park to the other.  If you prefer a cozier ride, a shuttle bus will be available to shield you from the chilly night air.

The bonfire will be lit and ready to keep all our friends & neighbors warm as they visit with Santa, sip on a hot beverage, munch on a walking taco or warm up with a nice bowl of chili or soup.  There will be cookies by the dozen - - all free for the taking!

We'll have raffles & prizes to keep things exciting and the sounds of Christmas Carols will ring through the air as the Geneva High School choir leads us in our favorite songs of the season!

So, don your warmest holiday apparel and meet us down at the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park tomorrow at 5:00 PM as that's when the celebration begins!

Fall Car Show & Bonfire were a Hit!

The Friends of the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park would like to thank all who attended and contributed to the Fall Car Show and Community Bonfire yesterday.

The sights, sounds, and yes, even the smell of Fall was in the air as cars, trucks and several motorcycles rolled in along the sunkissed river yesterday afternoon.  We met some new friends that came from cities all around to join in the show, grab a hot dog, pick up their car plaque & door prize and chat with other proud owners about their vehicles, the warm weather and the hope of winning the 50/50 raffle.

Later in the evening, the party really started as people from Harpersfield came out to talk with neighbors, make new friends and feast on the sloppy joe dogs, chips, hot chocolate, cider & donuts.  The sound of children laughing filled the air as they played in the field with friends and all the dogs who came out to have some fun.

As darkness fell, the warmth of the bonfire made for a great place to pull up a chair, sip on hot spiced cider and listen to songs sung by the Girl Scouts.  The kids rode through the Covered Bridge and all around the park in a wagon pulled by a John Deere Gator decked out in Halloween lights.  The final destination was the S'Mores Station where the free S'Mores were a big hit with kids of all ages.

The end of the evening drew near with a telling of the story, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and the appearance of "The Great Pumpkin of Harpersfield".  The finale of the evening was the drawing of the 50/50 raffle with the winner receiving $180.

We hope that those of you who joined us, enjoyed the fall party as much as we did.  We look forward to seeing all of you again at one of the many future events we have planned in the park!

Many people offered to lend a hand for other events at the park.  If you would like to become a "Friend of the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Park", please send me an E-mail or give me a call. We would love to have you join us.

Thanks for EVERYTHING!
