Last summer, Friends of Rye Nature Center welcomed 48 students from East Harlem to one week of summer camp. Through a new partnership with the Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the support of some very special friends, we were able to extend our regular camp by one week and offer it, free of charge, to children whose summer rarely takes them off the pavement of NY City. Most of these children had never had the opportunity to spend an entire week outdoors amid trees, creeks and animals. During the one week camp they explored the 47-acres of the Rye Nature Center while learning about the environment and their responsibility for it. It is our belief that every child, whether from the city or the suburbs, deserves and needs environmental education. We feel that this week will be life-changing for these children.
