Welcome from the Founder, Tara Lenahan

Welcome to FUZZIES FOR THE HOMELESS(founded January 27, 2009), my "Lifetime Charity." I am looking  for people to knit or crochet scarves and hats for the homeless and the needy. The items collected will be donated to 2 organizations: Covenant House and the Pierre Toussaint Pantry in St. Benedict's Prep in Newark,NJ. This is an ongoing project and plan to make deliveries monthly, forever, so even though the weather is getting warmer...it's not too late or too early to get started! I will also take donations of yarn if you don't knit. I would like to suggest dark colors for the boys and men.The scarves should be about 5 inches wide and long enough to wrap around the neck at least once. If you could send a picture by email of you knitting that would be great!  Eventually I plan on making what I call FUZZY BUNDLES which would include a hat, mittens or gloves, and socks wrapped up in the scarf. If you would like to help, post a comment here or email me at tarasfuzzies@gmail.com

The first ever presentation and donation debut was to Sister Linda at the Pantry at St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, NJ on February 24, 2009. The other half was to the President and CEO of Covenant House, Mr. Kevin M. Ryan, at the Newark Office on March 27, 2009. Scroll down and click on albums to see pictures.

Thanks to you who support FUZZIES FOR THE HOMELESS, the number of scarves will be changing so click on the "Logo and Tally" section on the right side of this page for updates. You can also read the story on how FUZZIES was born by clicking on the picture of the Scroll titled "My Story".
Please help and keep spreading the word. Thank you!

My mom and I recently dropped off bags of scarves and hats at Covenant House, Newark on November 29, 2011. The youth were so grateful and I quote one of the young men who helped us carry the bags in, " Wow, these scarves have love in every stitch!" That is definitely what you give them!!
The response has been overwhelming and amazing that I just wanted to let all of you know that we have expanded where many of the beautiful scarves, hats, etc are being donated. My father has dropped them off at the following: Project Paul in Keansburg,NJ and Catholic Charities- Ozanam Family Shelter in Edison,NJ which houses up to 80 family members. Once again, thank you ladies so much for all you've been doing, you are a major blessing this Christmas season and more!
Love always,
Tara

Special thanks to St. Mary's Helping Hands, in care of Betty Fitzgerald, who just donated 9 beautiful hats and 20 beautiful scarves today!! You guys rock!

I'm on my 5th scarf, and I think I convinced some ladies in North Jersey to make some, too!
Two of the ladies who go to St. Bernadette's Church in Parlin will be knitting scarves also.
I'm spreading the word!!!

OMG that rocks, you rock, oh my gosh Ms. Jones! I'm so glad to hear from you and YES I am still collecting and will be forever! That rocks that you have been knitting. You rock too! You can drop them off at SBP if you like, but PLEASE make sure you label the bag with my name and Fuzzies for the Homeless and leave a note to make sure it doesn't go to Sister Linda in the pantry first because I need to log and count them into my log book. Thank you, thank you, a million times, thank you so so much! Could you let Cullen know that I did do the triathlon. Please continue to spread the word and if you want to email me it is tarasfuzzies@gmail.com

Hi Tara
I know this is the first time I have sent you and email since I met you in May at St Benedict’s where my son, Cullen Jones was honored. Since that time I have been knitting scarves. I have about 8-10 scarves and wanted to know if you are still collecting them and if the drop off point is still St. Benedict’s?
Thanks,
Ms. Jones

Please note that it is my brother, Kieran, who is currently a Junior at St. Benedict's. My brother, Jared, who is 20 years old is in the Navy in Great Lakes, Illinois.

Also, Debra Langer donated 35 scarves!

My school is St. Mary's Elementary on the grounds of Newark Abbey which is where St. Benedict's Preparatory School is also.
