GEAR UP Reads
GEAR UP Reads is a program that ASU GEAR UP is promoting for all the GEAR UP Cohort students to read. That means all the GEAR UP high school Students in Avery, Burke and Alleghany will be reading the same book. The Selection is "This I Believe".
Just to give you some additional details about this project,
This I Believe _is a collection of short essays (2 1/2 to 3 pages max)
by remarkable historical and contemporary people. ASU's thoughts are to
provide each cohort English teacher a class set of books, and a
curriculum guide that they can use. Teachers can pick and choose the
essays and activities that they think best fits in with their English
curriculum and pacing guides.
"This I Believe" is a wonderful book that will remain in your English teachers' classrooms, and they could be used for years to teach different narrative styles, character education, discussion
generators, or as a short activity within the grading period.
Open House
Open House for all incoming Students and Parents of Alleghany County was held on August 5th from 4:00 - 7:00. This is always a well received event as students and parents are always excited to meet their teachers and review their schedules. Alleghany High School also held a special meeting for the Freshman Class and Parents. Over 50% of students and parents attended. The program agenda was "open mike" Mr. Crouse, Mrs. Haynes and Guidance Counselor- Buddy Marion. GEAR UP also provided a brief program explaining the GEAR UP Grant and the opportunities the students will be having as well as stating the GEAR UP Goals of Post Secondary Schools.
Freshman Transition
We had approx. 95% of our Freshman to attend Freshman Transition on August 5th, 2009. Students were brought together for a general meeting and introduced to the staff at Alleghnay High School. Students then were taken to homerooms and toured the school. After homerooms, students followed their schedules for the rest of the day. Lunch was served by GEAR UP and students were dismissed to go home.
Summer Programming
Dear GEAR UP Summer Programming Staff:
I just wanted to take this opportunity to say "Thank You" for supporting GEAR UP and giving of your time and energy for our Local Summer Program in June. Without your help it would not have been as successful as it was. After completing all the data base entries, we had a total of 72 students to participate in one way or another in our summer programming. Our album of pictures can be viewed at this site. As they say, " a picture tells a story." Just seeing the faces of these students one can't help but smile- knowing they were learning and having a good time.
I know our local camp wasn't as large as we had hoped, but for a new program and the timing of other programs being offered, I think we had a good turnout. I know the students are going to be talking about it for months to come and it will grow for next year’s programming.
We had a lot to offer and you all did an exceptional job. Many times we asked you to juggle you schedule and include other students who just happened to show up and you accepted them with grace and they felt welcomed. Most importantly the students felt at ease and hopefully built up their self-confidence. We even had students who had never been away from home go on overnight trips!
I think having the program at the high school really helped the middle school students feel better about the layout of the buildings for next year as well as having them travel to Wilkes Community College for their class will help them understand how duel enrollment works during the regular school year. Thank you Paul and Diane for allowing us to invade the classrooms at the high school, I can't say it enough that without you, the program would not have been the same. You rescheduled your summer to help out in this program and attend everyday with enthusiasm. It was amazing to hear all the different activates as you shared your experiences with each other. Many times I heard you all have side conversations with the students about their personal goals for school and careers. You were supporting GEAR UP in every way. The more the students hear this from more and more people has to have an impact on their outcome. If we start early to get their attention, it will only have a positive outcome. Again, "Thank you".
