Call for 4-H Volunteers!

WANTED:  4-H members  and volunteers willing to demonstrate a simple activity, craft or project near the Kennedy Building between 2-4pm each day (except Thursday) during fair. If interested, please notify the 4-H office when you would like to present and what you will be doing.

WANTED:  4-H Teens and volunteers to monitor the Kennedy Building exhibits in 2 hour shifts during fair. The Kennedy Building hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Please contact the 4-H office for time slot availability.

ALL ENTRIES ARE DUE BY 5PM -Monday, JUNE 3rd! 

 

 

The 4-H Office highly recommends that you turn in your 4-H Fair paperwork in person to the 4-H Office so it can be checked for accuracy and completeness.  Please note that we do need complete entry forms- including Social Security #- so we can issue premium checks.

Four things that Judging should do for you:

What every exhibitor and parent should remember about evaluation

 

Why do we judge?

There are four things that judging should do for you:

  1. Help you gain more appreciation of excellence and quality of workmanship or performance.

  2. Teach you and help you to improve skills and techniques.

  3. Encourage you to discover and develop your talents and potentials.

  4. Help you to think critically and objectively about your work and yourself.

 

Who are the judges?

Judges are people who want to help 4-H members learn. They are asked to be judges because they have special training and background in certain subject matter areas. Not all judges have all the same training and therefore differ in opinions and ideas of how something should be done. You need to understand this so that you can graciously accept the awards they give you.

 

The process of judging will never be perfect. Judges can evaluate only what they see. They can’t know how hard one member has worked or what obstacles another might have had to overcome. They judge according to a standard, what we refer to as the Danish system. They can guess a little about what to expect from members of a certain age or years of experience, but even then one can still encounter a difference of opinion.

 

Five steps of evaluation (judging):

  1. Self- evaluation- how do you think you did? What could be improved? What was done especially well?

  2. Evaluate each other in your 4-H club. Be honest, but not overly critical. Never tease or make fun of another’s work.

  3. Ask an adult from outside your 4-H club to evaluate your work.

  4. The judge at county fair will evaluate your project. Keep in mind that blue is for excellent work, red is for good work and white is for worthy work. All ribbons are for work well done. Be proud of what you did well and accept suggestions for improvement.

  5. De-briefing- get together with your 4-h club after the county fair and talk it over. Stress the positives. Remember that the person is more than the project!
