HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM JENNIFER SALVATORE!
Hello Juniors,
Happy New Year to each of you! I hope that it is a great year for you personally and for each of your clubs. I am looking forward to reading your reports. It is always nice to see the variety of projects and the dollars donated to such great causes.
January is the month of recognition for the following Home Life related causes:
Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
National Birth Defects Prevention Month
National Blood Donor Month
National Poverty in America Awareness Month
The following are partners with which you can organize fundraisers and awareness events for the above causes:
Let's start the year out right by organizing a project to benefit one of the above suggestions.

Hello Juniors!
I'm sure you are all wondering how we got to September so quickly this year but it certainly is here! One very important observance in September is "Ovarian Cancer Awareness." It is one the cancers that is very difficult to detect, especially in its early stages, so please review the signs and symptoms listed on this page and check out the official website for more information. www.ovarian.org
I also want to encourage each of you to review your personal finances in the coming weeks. And by review I mean:
Make sure you are getting the most for your money with utilities and home services. Review package prices for cable/internet/phone. Check to see if you have competing companies for utilities and compare pricing. Don't just get comfortable with your monthly rate (although they seem to be increasing on their own;)
Review bank and credit card company charges. Lots of laws just changed in order to protect consumers; however, these companies have had plenty of warning and have implemented other fees to make up for losses. Look at your statements!! Even if you are paperless (and I hope you are!), you can still thoroughly review statements online.
Secure your savings. You should have at least 8 months of living expenses saved up and readily available in case of emergency. Yes, I know that is easier said than done...but it can be done. Sacrifice dining out for a bagged lunch and you are well on your way. With the failing economy many people are losing their jobs with no notice.
Prepare a monthly budget and track spending. Trust me...you will be surprised at how much money is "wasted" on items that are not necessary. Some credit card websites will categorize your spending...now that will make you think!
Protect your personal information. Do everything you can to prevent identify theft. The steps above will help you find any problems quicker since you are reviewing statements monthly!
I know this seems overwhelming but it really can be done and I think it is worth your time.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect, especially, in the early stages. This is partly due to the fact that these two small, almond shaped organs are deep within the abdominal cavity, one on each side of the uterus. These are some of the potential signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer:
- Bloating
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
- Feeling the need to urinate urgently or often
Other symptoms of ovarian cancer can include:
- Fatigue
- Upset stomach or heartburn
- Back pain
- Pain during sex
- Constipation or menstrual changes
If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, see your physician.

Fall Greetings 2011
Happy Junior Month!! I hope that you have lots of great projects and fun membership events planned for October. The Fayetteville Juniors had a busy week of both fun and project related events during our Junior week festivities. We also had a new potential member at our monthly meeting! It was great!
As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please consider participating in a project that helps spread the word about early detection. October 21st is National Mammography Day. Remind your club members, family, friends and your entire community to get regular mammograms and to do their monthly breast exams. Save the Tatas! The following are Risk Factors:
Risk factors for breast cancer include:
- Age: Half of all women diagnosed are over age 65.
- Weight: Being obese or overweight.
- Diet & Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity, a diet high in saturated fat, and alcoholic intake of more than two drinks per day.
- Menstrual & Reproductive History: Early menstruation or late menopause, having your first child at an older age or not having given birth, or taking birth control pills for more than ten years if you are under 35.
- Family & Personal History: A family history of breast cancer—particularly a mother, sister. or a personal history of breast cancer of benign (non-cancer) breast disease.
- Medical & Other Factors: Dense breast tissue (often identified by a mammogram), past radiation therapy to the breast or chest area. A history of hormone treatments—such as estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes— including BRCA1, BRCA2, and others.
October is also Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month. This is a subject that we don't hear about much in the news but it is still a major cause of death in infant. Contact your local labor & delivery wards and ask how you can help educate new parents about SIDS. If you know someone who lost their baby to SIDS, find out how you can help support him/her.
Enjoy your month and give yourself a pat on the back for committing to be a volunteer for GFWC. Thank you for all that you do!

Holiday greetings....
Hello Ladies
The holidays are quickly approaching and I want to take a minute to bring a few things to your attention. Most of us have started holiday shopping and are planning to participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday. As you go out to shop or sit in your PJ's at home to shop the web, please remember to guard your personal and financial information. If you are heading to the malls and villages:
- Only carry credit cards that you plan to use that day
- You can choose to write "Ask for ID" on the back of your card instead of signing it so that the clerk has to see a drivers license to complete the purchase
- Make a copy of the front and back of all of your credit cards to keep in a safe place in your home so that if your purse is stolen or lost, you will have the contact and card information at your fingertips
- Check your wallet before leaving each store to make sure that the credit card you use was handed back to you.
- Be aware of people around you...the latest trend is for a person to stand behind you and take a picture of your card with their cell phone
If you are shopping online:
- Pick one card and use it for all online purchases so that you are not putting multiple credit account information in cyber space
- Make sure the checkout page is using a secure url (https instead of just http) There should also be a padlock icon displayed somewhere on the page
- Use a website and virus protection service so that you know what sites are secure for shopping
Though we are very busy during this time of year, don't forget to plan family time into your schedules! Turn your cell phones off first! Some ideas are:
Game night (board games or Wii games are always a hit)
Movie and popcorn night
Decorating for Christmas together
Holiday art projects
Playing in the snow
Your family will be happy with just about anything as long as it's with you!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
