GFWC WV Jrs Crown Jewels of Volunteers... - INT. OUTREACH

Jessica Hames, International Outreach

Hello ladies!  I know our clubs are thinking locally right now - we all want to help with the Christmas needs that are close to home, but there are easy ways to help our international neighbors as well!  GFWC has recently added a new partnership for International Outreach - INMED.

INMED Partnerships for Children rescues children from the immediate and irreversible harm of disease,

hunger, abuse, neglect or violence, and prepares them to shape a brighter future for themselves and the next

generation.

INMED is partnering with GFWC to give members the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of

children in Latin America, the Caribbean, southern Africa, northern Virginia, and Compton, California.

Established in 1986, INMED has rescued millions of children through sustainable programs that engage

vulnerable communities to create positive, lasting change.

Among others, one way that you can contribute to INMED is by shopping from their gift catalog!  For more information about INMED, check out our club manual at gfwc.org or go to www.inmed.org.

August 2011

Hello ladies!  I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, I can’t believe it’s almost over!  I know that most of our projects are geared towards local needs, but we also like to help internationally.  There are some programs that clubs do yearly, which is fabulous, but be on the lookout for new needs/projects.  A website that I would like to share with you is www.womenforwomen.org – this site has information and ideas that could help our clubs.  Also www.globalgirlfriend.com is a wonderful shopping site, with everything from clothes to jewelry.  There are some great earrings and bracelets on this site for under $20 and even $10.  These would make great gifts for your secret pals, club gifts, or even to get your Christmas shopping started!  Speaking of Christmas, summer is a great time to get started on your Operation Christmas Child boxes!  We all get so overwhelmed close to Christmas, it would be great to have your shoeboxes done early!  For more info on this project, go to www.samaritanspurse.org.   If anyone has any International Outreach program ideas you would like to share, or any questions about this Community Service Project, please don’t hesitate to contact me!!

March

March is Women's History Month, and International Women's Day is March 8. Around the world, these important events will be celebrated in various ways. Each day, Heifer makes lives better for thousands of women and girls. Heifer knows entire communities can dramatically change when women are given opportunities to make decisions, run businesses and take charge of their circumstances.

January

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!  And now it's time to get busy!!  I'm not going to post ideas or suggestions this month because I'm sure everyone is preoccupied with reports.  I'm so anxious to read the reports and hear what everyone has done in the past year.  If you have any questions about International Outreach or if there's anything I can do to help, please feel free to contact me.  Just a reminder....Here are the GFWC Partnerships under International Outreach - CARE, Heifer Project International, INMED Partnerships for Children, Operation Smile International, Plan USA, U.S. Fund for UNICEF, United Nations Association of the United States of America.  All other projects will be reported under International Outreach Collaboration.  Happy Reporting!!

Relief Help for Japan Earthquake

Because of the ongoing tragedy in Japan, here is a link to an article that gives several ways to help:  http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20473235,00.html

Hello Juniors!  Hope everyone is enjoying September!  I just want to remind you all of a wonderful project that many Juniors already participate in and is one of our partners:  Operation Smile.  At Operation Smile, medical volunteers provide safe, effective, and free cleft lip and cleft palate repair surgery for children born all over the world.  It is an international medical humanitarian organization and their medical missions are made possible by the thousands of volunteers and donors who generously contribute time, talent and resources to their cause.  There are so many ways Juniors can give to this organization.  Not only can you donate money, but you can make dolls, arm bands, blankets and other items that are given to the children.  For more information go to www.operationsmile.org or feel free to contact me with any questions.  I know some clubs are planning pajama parties in October, this would be a great opportunity to get all the ladies together and make some Operation Smile dolls!  Junior Week in October would also be a great time to plan a sewing party!
