Welcome to Paddlers' Realm on-line gallery
These photographs were taken over the course of a 2 day, 4-star assessment and the following off day. The conditions were big enough outside the Gate to be unsafe for venturing around Point Bonita.
It was a special treat to work with both Gordon Brown and Tom Bergh on the assessment. I'd never had the opportuntity to meet or work with either coach. As a bonus, Rob Avery and Jeff Allen also sat in on the assessment.
After the 2nd day, Sean Morely dropped Chris Lockyer off with Ed, Dick, Peter and I. We were to give him a ride back to the hostel. Little did Chris know that from that point on he was our captive and would be forced to paddle with us, out around Alcatraz and back, and eat all meals at Taste of Rome.
Day 4 was was Rock Garden Safety and Rescue with Roger Shuman and many other great coaches: Matt Nelson, Dave White, Paul Kuthe, Greg Berman. The day brought a most powerful wind event. Sean said it was some of the most extreme weather he'd seen in his 4 years there. 40-50 knot gusts ripping water off the tops of waves. A most excellent recue was perforemd by Roger Shuman and Paul Kuthe.
Within 30 to 45 minutes the storm dissipated and surfing -and rescues-resumed at Yellow Bluff.
Day 5 was incident management with Jeff Allen. He put us through our paces. Real scenarios coupled with staged ones occuring on the edge of a tide race, created challenging conditions for the "leader in training" to manage. Stop, Asses, Formulate a plan, Execute.
Day 6 Advanced Coastal Tour, again with Jeff Allen. We had the special privilege of Freya Hoffmeister joining us on this excursion.
We left Horshoe Cove and bucked the flooding current under the Golden Gate. We were a group of 14. There were at least 4 safety boats not including Jeff who was leading the tour with the assistance of Matthew.
The swell was big, 16 ft. It was the 2nd of 2 days over the course of 6, that we'd made it out through the gate. This day was much bigger than the 1st, which to me seemed powerful enough. Rounding Pt. Diablo was wild. The large swell rolling in, white froth surging up and around the point, waves rebounding back against the incoming swell. The hooking cliffed coastline tore into the clear blue sky.
We were planning to head across to the South tower, ride the flood in to Alcatraz, cross to Angel Island then return to Horshoe Cove via Yellow Bluff.
Due to heavy shipping traffic and the arrival of a new coast guard cutter, which conjured al sorts of welcoming crafts, we decided not to cross but instead head back up through the Gate on the North side. We paddled to the south end of Angel for lunch, then some rock gardening along the way to point Bluff, then out into the tidal race between Angel Island and Alcatraz. We rode this across to Yellow Bluff for some more excitement and unplanned practice, towing a few capsized patrons and there rescuers through the tide race and back to Horseshoe Cove.
