Starving On Stage

Ghostlight Theater Co. of New England, a multi-award-winning theater company, is bringing the controversial social drama CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS to the Janice B. Streeter Theater in Nashua, NH April 28th - 30th at 8pm and May 1st at 2pm.

Described by one critic as, “the latest in a long line of macabre and often brilliant excursions into [Shepard’s] personal nightmare-view of America,” CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS was first produced at New York City's The Public Theater in 1978, amid the rising gas prices and economic stagnation of the period. This Obie Award-winning play focuses on the Tate family as it clings to the last vestiges of the American Dream despite overwhelming cultural materialism. When alcoholic father Weston and discontented mother Ella each try to sell the family farm, the bottom-line cost is more than their imagined benefits. The opening and closing of a refrigerator door seems the only constant in the Tate family household.

“CURSE, concerns itself with deferred dreams and their explosive consequences,” stated the show's director William McGregor. “The tension arises not just from its social and political setting, but the archetypal relationships of the Starving Class. The Tate family’s not just poor; they’ve slipped so far from loving interactions that their lives are bereft of meaning. From the opening scene the play is a nightmarish slide from very bad too much, much worse.” While a popular director throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire, this is Mr. McGregor's directing debut with Ghostlight Theater Co.

“Ghostlight was excited to get to work with Will on this production to kick off our 2011 Season,” said Mariah Sefel, producer for the production. “This piece seemed very apt for the times that we are living in today.”

Ghostlight’s production of CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS opens on April 28th and runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm
at Janice B. Streeter Theater (14 Court Street, Nashua NH). Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors/students/military. Tickets can be bought online at www.gltne.org or at the door.  Due to strong language and subject matter, audience discretion is strongly advised.

Come join us for Ghostlight's annual Membership Meeting:

* Choose our new leadership! All eleven board positions are up for election! (want to run? email johnsefel@gmail.com)

Should we be going after the punk rock audience, the intellectual rebels, or both (a.k.a., Zombies, Brecht, or Zombie-Brecht). More or less of a focus on brand new material?

Not currently a member? You can sign up AT the meeting!

Through a Picture Darkly: Ghostlight Theater brings Oscar Wilde Classic to the stage.

Ghostlight Theater Co., New England’s award-winning alternative theatre troupe, is bringing the New England premiere of the Oscar Wilde classic The Picture of Dorian Gray to the Amato Center August 13th and 14th at 8pm and August 15th at 2pm.

This haunting and thought-provoking play tells the story of Dorian Gray, a promising young man who succumbs to temptation and the misguided influence of others. He is ultimately forced to face the consequences his reckless actions have had, not only on his life and others, but ultimately on his soul.  “We live in a very different time from the late Victorian era of Dorian Gray,” said director Ozan Haksever, “but our society faces the same problems of moral ambiguity, mortality, and alienation from our fellow human beings.”  Ghostlight brings Oscar Wilde’s classic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, to vivid life in an exciting stage adaptation by New Hampshire playwright David John Preece.

The Picture of Dorian Gray will take the stage at the Amato Center on Friday and Saturday, August 13th and 14th at 8 pm, and Sunday, August 15th at 2 pm. The Amato is located at 56 Mont Vernon Street , Milford , NH. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for students, seniors, active military, or Ghostlight Members, and may be purchased at www.gltne.org or at the door on the night of the show.

Once Upon A Time…

For immediate release – June 29, 2010 - CONCORD, NH - Ghostlight Theater Co. of New England, a multi-award-winning theater company, is bringing the terrifying thriller THE PILLOWMAN to the Capital Center for the Arts as part of the Spotlight Café Series July 16th and 17th at 8pm.

THE PILLOWMAN, written by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, was the winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2004. Katurian (Dylan Gamblin), a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state, is interrogated by two bulldogish detectives, Tuposki (Mark Morrison) and Ariel (John Kneeland) regarding several missing child cases which resemble his own Grimm’s-styled stories. The evening progresses from interrogation room to prison cell and back, leading to discoveries about the writer's own dark childhood, the brother (Steve Ihde) whom he cares for, and the stories at the heart of it all. With many twists and turns, the line between reality and fairy tale is blurred until it's hard to know who is telling the truth in this thoughtful thriller.

Ghostlight’s production of THE PILLOWMAN had its first successful run at the Black Box Theatre located at Chester College of New England this past April. “We are excited to be touring this show and performing it at the Capital Center as part of the Spotlight Café Series” says Mariah Sefel, the play’s director. “The show is ideal for small, intimate venues as the space becomes a character in and of itself, helping transport the audience right into the interrogation room.”

Ghostlight’s production of THE PILLOWMAN runs Friday July 16th and Saturday July 17th at 8pm at the Capital Center for the Arts in Concord, NH. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students. Tickets can be bought online at
www.ccanh.com or by calling the Capital Center at 603-225-1111. Due to strong language and unsettling subject matter, audience discretion is strongly advised.

Membership Renewal Time!

Hello Ghostlight Members,

Those of you receiving this letter had the opportunity to attend the Ghostlight Theater Company Five Year Anniversary event held in Nashua this time last year.

That event gave us a chance to look back over GL’s five year history, to celebrate our achievements, thank some of those that have contributed to our growth and to expand upon our membership.

The passing of yet another year provides us another opportunity to reflect and it is our hope that as a member of Ghostlight that you are as happy with our efforts this past year as we are.

With your help, Ghostlight Theater Company:
·  Presented our most elaborate set to date in Suburbia resulting in a much deserved “Best Set Design” award for Tom Morgan at this years New Hampshire Theater Awards for subUrbia.
·  Psycho Beach Party had a well received and successful run at the Capitol Center for the Arts Spotlight Café in Concord.  Our first time performing in that space and a great beginning to a mutually beneficial relationship with the CCA.
·  Established a partnership with Chester College of New England that enables us to utilize their facility while encouraging students and faculty to participate in Ghostlight productions.
·  Rolled out a can’t be beat touring show in The Pillowman, starting with eight highly acclaimed shows at the Chester College Black Box Theater.

This letter however is not just about looking back and celebrating our achievements; it is about looking forward into the future of Ghostlight Theater Company of New England.  It is about our desire to have you be a part of that future by renewing your membership with us.

Being a member of GL provides discounts to shows, an opportunity to participate in deciding what shows we perform and waived production fees for shows you are involved in. But, it also provides you the opportunity to support a community theater group that demonstrates an unwavering commitment to their Mission Statement with every single show.

Please consider renewing your membership with us again this year, you have the following options:
a.  https://ghostlight-theater-co-of-new-england.ticketleap.com/buy-tickets
b.  www.gltne.org/join.htm
c.  Planning on attending Titus?  Great please visit the membership booth…….

The mission of Ghostlight Theater Co. of New England is to challenge the prevailing notion that theater is a quaint hobby when left to the amateur, and may only rise to the level of "art form" when handled by those charging for their services and/or presenting work that mirrors the industry's status quo. Instead, Ghostlight works to prove that theater gives a voice to all; by creating theater that varies wildly in its subject matter and style but always aims at breaking down barriers and stylistic strangleholds, Ghostlight encourages a deeper understanding and appreciation of this oldest of art forms by audiences, artists, and those members of the public who may not even consider attending live theater.

I look forward to having another year with all of our friends and family joining the fun.  Please consider continuing your membership with us.

Thank you.

-Andrea

Shakespeare's Darkest Tragedy Opens: Ghostlight stages "Titus Andronicus"

Ghostlight Theater Co., an award-winning troupe based in Salem, NH, will be bringing Titus Andronicus to the Amato Center for the Performing Arts on June 18th, 19th and 20th. The production boasts over twenty-five cast members, including Andrew Wetmore as Titus, Sharon Lajoie as Tamora, Jessica Scalese as Lavinia, Peter Josephson as Marcus, and Michael Zuccola as Saturninus.

The play is among Shakespeare's earliest writings, is rarely staged, and according to director John Sefel, is "generally considered to be one of his darkest and most brutal". This violence includes the mutilation of several main characters as well as a body count that rivals many of his better known tragedies. Ghostlight's production, however, "seeks to find the humanity and love at the core of the play's desperation and violence," Sefel said.

"Titus" is only one of several shows that Ghostlight will be putting up this year. In July, the group's successful run of Martin McDonaugh's "The Pillowman" will move to the Capitol Center for the Arts, followed by NH playwright David Preece's adaptation of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" back at the Amato Center, and finally the group's Seven Deadly Sins Festival, comprised of new one-act plays written by writers from throughout New England, to be published and performed in September as part of the Capitol Center's "Spotlight Series."

Titus Andronicus will take over the Amato Center stage on Friday and Saturday, June 18th and 19th at 8pm, and Sunday, June 20th at 7pm. The Amato is located at 56 Mont Vernon Street, Milford, NH. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for students, seniors, active military, or Ghostlight Members, and may be purchased at www.gltne.org or at the door on the night of the show. Due to the violent nature of Shakespeare's text, audience discretion is advised.

SINFULLY ARTISTIC: Theater Troupe Calling for "Seven Sins" Related Plays and Artwork

For Immediate Release - Concord, NH - Ghostlight Theater Co., a multi-award winning NH-based theater group, is accepting submissions from playwrights and visual artists for their upcoming Seven Deadly Sins Festival, to be held as part of the Capitol Center for the Arts' Spotlight Cafe series in Concord, NH on September 18th and 19th, 2010.

The festival, open to any artist based in New England, will be comprised of seven one-act plays, each related to one of the traditional "deadly sins" (Pride, Wrath, Avarice, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, and Envy), as well as an art exhibit on the same theme. Ghostlight will also be publishing an anthology of all plays performed as part of the festival.

"The Seven Deadly Sins have been a thematic magnet for writers and artists since medieval times," said John Sefel, instructor at Chester College of New England and Artistic Director of Ghostlight Theater Co. "This festival provides a way to celebrate the wealth of creativity all around New England, wrapped around a theme that naturally suggests a huge range of styles and approaches, from humorous to dramatic to spiritual." Sefel will serve as the production coordinating director for the festival, working alongside producer Don Tongue. Seven additional directors will stage the selected plays with local actors.

All genres and styles are welcomed and encouraged; plays must be approximately 10 minutes long, must clearly be about one of the seven sins, not previously published, and easily staged with minimal set-up time. Visual art work should be limited to painting, sculpture, photography, or multimedia requiring no more than a single standard household outlet, must be able to be carried by two people or less, and able to be installed in under ten minutes - traditional displays (paintings, framed photos, etc.) are preferred, but, Sefel added, "if it's impressive enough, we're open to anything."

All judging will be handled by a panel of college and university instructors, who will not have access to the identity of the artists. The deadline for One-Act Scripts is Friday, May 14th. Submitted plays should include a cover sheet with the play's title, the represented sin, and the playwright's name and contact information. The deadline for artwork (submitted via high resolution photographs with a cover sheet and an artists' statement) is July 1st. To ensure impartial judging, playwrights and artists must make sure that their name appears only on their cover sheet, and nowhere on their actual submission.

There is no limit on the number of submissions from each artist, but all artists must currently live in or attend school in New England. Submissions and questions may be sent to SevenDeadlySinsFestival@gmail.com, or by mail to Ghostlight Theater Co., 258 Main Street, Salem, NH 03079. More information can be seen on the group's website, www.gltne.org.

THE PILLOWMAN is a very intense journey of four characters as they try to discover the truth behind the murders," says Mariah Sefel, the play’s director. “The intimacy of the Black Box [Chester College’s 20-seat theater] is perfect for transporting the audience right into the interrogation room.” This show marks the second production Ghostlight has staged at the college, and the first in the newly-created Black Box. Although “perfect for the students at Chester, who deal with philosophical issues surrounding what constitutes art on a daily basis,” Sefel warns that the play is not for audiences under 18.

Ghostlight’s production of THE PILLOWMAN runs March 26-28, April 2-3 and April 9-11th. Fri & Saturday performances are at 8pm with Sunday performances at 7pm. All performances will be held at The Black Box Theater, located in Douglas Hall on the Campus of Chester College of New England, 15 minutes from Downtown Derry. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for members/students/military. Seating is limited and on-line ticket purchase is recommended at www.gltne.org. If you have any questions call Ghostlight at 603-930-9536. Due to strong language and unsettling subject matter, audience discretion is strongly advised.

3.WISE.MEN.

Lowell, MA - December 3rd through the 12th, Ghostlight Theater Co. of New England will be presenting the premiere of "3.Wise.Men.," a new play by Lowell resident John Kneeland. The play tells the story of three brothers, a run-down pub owned by the eldest, and a dark secret threatening to rip them apart.

The cast includes seven area performers, including local favorite Peter Saati, whose recent work includes roles with Image Theater, Yellow Taxi Productions, and a principal role in the upcoming Derrick Comedy feature film, The Mystery Team, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The show also features Chris Samperi, Guy Bardascino, Emily Murphy, Mike Zuccola, Cliff Blake, and Dylan Gamblin.

The play, which is set in a bar, is being staged at the Lafayette Club, located at 465 Fletcher St, Lowell MA. "It's been really wonderful working with the Lafayette Club," said producer Mariah Sefel. "Being able to set the production inside an actual working bar has brought such a level of realism to the story, allowing the audience to really get 'inside' the play." Sefel added, "plus, having a working bar available for preshow and intermission doesn't hurt either." In the past, Ghostlight's productions have been seen throughout New England, from the Capitol Center for the Arts to the Provincetown Fringe Festival.

The production runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, and 12th at 8pm, with doors opening at 7pm with full bar service. Tickets are $15, or $12 for members of Ghostlight, the Lafayette Club, or seniors, and will be available at the door the nights of the show. The script includes intense violence and strong language, and is not intended for audiences under 18 years old.

For more information about Ghostlight and this production, visit the group at www.gltne.org, or call producer Mariah Sefel at 603-930-9536.

BEACH BLANKET MADNESS!

Ghostlight Theater Co. presents Charles Busch's "Psycho Beach Party"

Ghostlight Theater Co., New England's award-winning alternative theatre troupe, wants to warm up this cold weather season with their presentation of "Psycho Beach Party" on Saturday, November 14 at 7 and 10 pm and Sunday, November 15 at 7 pm in the Spotlight Cafe at the Capitol Center for the Arts, Concord, NH.

"Psycho Beach Party" is a twisted 60's Malibu Beach tale that follows, Chicklet, a young girl with a passion for surfing that harbors a dark secret.  Chicklet wants nothing more than to learn to ride the waves and unfortunately, she suffers from a multiple personality disorder.  The sight of the color red causes her to transform into various other selves including a radio personality, a checkout girl, a male model and a dominatrix out to conquer the world.  To add to the commotion, throw in a group of surfers led by the great Kanaka, a mother Joan Crawford would be scared of and a B-movie actress fleeing her latest bad film.  The climax is a wild luau scene where we discover the root of Chicklet's disorder through hypnosis.

The show is co-directed by Jessica Goodman and Lisa DeFazio and includes a cast of local favorites including Victoria Hogan, Marc Pelletier, Dylan Gamblin and Steven "Dingo" Ihde.  Jessica said, "It's as if "Gidget" and "Beach Blanket Bingo" meet up with "Psycho" and "Mommie Dearest".  It's a 60's beach movie with a delicious twist."  She warns that due to language and subject matter that this dark comedy is for adult audiences only.

General admission to the performance is $20. Tickets can be purchased at the Capitol Center for the Arts box office or online at www.ccanh.com.  For more information or to join the madness, check us out at www.gltne.org.

Ghostlight Theater Seeks to Regain Title of State Best!

Anyone who enjoys live theater, ever considered acting, or just wants to know more about the art will have a once-a-year opportunity on September 13 at Manchester’s Majestic Theater, 281 Cartier Street.

The 38th Annual Festival of Community Theatre will feature a competition in which five of the association’s 37 member theater groups will perform one-hour plays. The judges, theater professors and consultants, will also conduct workshops for actors of all ages and skill levels. Workshops begin at 10:00 AM; the competition starts at 1:30 PM.

There is even a unique opportunity to heighten one’s appreciation for acting and directing. After each competitive performance the judges will individually spend five minutes telling the theater group—and the audience—what worked, what did not work, and how to make it work.
The format for the Festival is designed to be exciting for both the performers and the audience. Each group has 10-minutes create a set onstage, 60-minutes to perform, and 10-minutes to empty the stage. In the past, groups created sets ranging from a simple table and chair to Medieval castle.

Audiences get a backstage view as set crews perform a choreographed dance to get everything set up and then take it all down.
There are four options for attending. An all-event pass costs $25 for all the workshops and the theatre competition. Participation in single workshops is $5 each, and tickets for the Theatre Session are $15. Individual Members of the NH Community Theatre Association get free admission to all events included in their $25 annual dues. Tickets will be available the door or by calling The Majestic Box Office at (603)669-7469.

Festival adjudicators and workshop facilitators are:
