You'll be able to have a great view of Jupiter tonight.  To view the planet, find the moon first.    The moon is just past the full moon phase so this shouldn't be difficult to do.  If you look to the right of the moon, you'll notice a bright "star" to the right.  That's Jupiter!  Jupiter is in its closest position to Earth.  If you look with binoculars, you might even be able to see some surface features or moons!  Happy gazing!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Saturday, July 17th, from 12-4 PM, I'll be staffing a GLCPS information table at the 11th Annual 3rd Eye Unlimited Open Festival.  The festival will be held at Buttonwood Park.  

We'll have information about GLCPS and applications available for prospective 5th grade students.  This is a great opportunity to get the word out about our school and to help recruit new students.

What am I thinking, mentioning back to school on July 12th?  However, the bargain hunter in me has to share!  Staples will be having weekly sales on school supplies with some items for 1 cent until Wednesday.  Here's a link this week's specials.

Operation Clean Sweep is looking for volunteers to help clean up the downtown area on Saturday, July 17th from 8:30AM to Noon.  They will meet at the YMCA on Union and Water Streets to start the day.  Lots of Domino's Pizza will be served at the end of the clean-up.

We wish to extend our sympathies to Crystal and her family at the loss of her father.  He had a courageous battle again cancer and passed away earlier this week.  His wake will be held at the Wilson Chapel on County St from 6-8 tonight, July 1st.  Much love to you, Amy and Crystal.

Dear GLCPS Families,

The LAST day of school is upon us!  Ms.O'G and I have have been reminiscing about the last 180+ school days and remembering the little faces we met last summer during interviews. Now, those little faces have turned into nearly 6th graders who have grown in so many ways this year. We thank you for all your support during the year with field trips, bake sales, exploratory demonstrations, drama club, homework, homework, and more homework.  We couldn't do all these wonderful things we do without your unending help.

Sixth grade teachers for next year will be Mrs. Devine, Mr. Branch, Mrs. Elias, and a new Math and Science teacher.  Ms. Andrade will return to her role as Math coach.  Bold new adventures await!

Our team will be changing next year.  Ms. O'G will be working with Mr. Clappi and I will be teaching a self-contained class (all 4 subjects with one teacher.)  I return to my fifth grade roots!

We'll keep the web site going during the summer and update it with any important information you might need.

Just a reminder, once an OZ team member, always an OZ team member!

We were very fortunate to have Maxwell's mom, Michele Mastroianni, with us for field day. She brought coffee for Ms. Zajac, cookies for the team, helped clean the fields, pushed swings for what seemed to be hours, and kept smiling the whole day!!  Thanks for all your help, Michele!!

Hi GLCPS Family. This is Mrs Pires.  After reviewing the weather for Wednesday, June 16th we are asking all of our staff and students to come dressed for field day. The students are expected to wear athletic shorts and the shirt they wore for the Walk A Thon. If the weather holds we will have our field day tomorrow. If the weather turns we will have it on Thursday. We will notify parents via the connect ed system if we depart from the school. If you have any questions please call us as early as 6:30 AM.

Field Day has been moved to THURSDAY!!  We will be in high cleaning mode tomorrow.  Please come prepared for locker and mailbox cleaning!  Bring extra bags; there's always more than you think!

Dear GLCPS Families,

Our final Presentations of Learning (POLs) will be held next Tuesday, June 15th.  Our tradition includes having parents, family members, and community members judge these final projects.  Students present their projects and panelist use a rubric to rate the presentation. 

Currently, Miss Bresciani is recruiting panelists to spend some portion of the day in classrooms.  It is amazing day to witness the poise and confidence of our students as they "strut their stuff"!

There wasn't a cloud in the sky, the temperature was rising, Mayor stopped by to say a few words and 400 GLCPS kids with grade-level colored shirts were circling Riverside Park.  What a day!!  In the end, over $5400 was raised by the Walk-A-Thon!!  The more Incredible part was nearly $1500 came from the 5th grade class!  Mayor Lang called it an effort in leaving a legacy for future classes.  The school was also able to get 2 grants for new classroom furniture.  The total raised was over $18,000.  WAY TO GO GLCPS!!!  5th grade earned a dress down day for their efforts.  Congratulations to our wonderful students for making our first walk-a-thon so successful. 

Mrs. Brown leaves tomorrow morning at 5 AM for a 3-week musical adventure to Ghana!!  She will be traveling with a professor from UMASS/Dartmouth and a group of students.  Their purpose of the trip is to learn African drumming and dance.  What better place to learn that right in Africa?!

Mrs. Brown will be keeping a blog so we can follow her on her journey through Ghana and as she learns the complicated techniques of traditional African drums.  Much of what she learns will be part of the music curriculum for next year.

Dear Families,

The regular uniform is being changed on Wednesday for the Walk-a-thon.  5th graders are to wear orange t-shirts.  Bottoms can include athletic shorts of any color, track pants, or uniform pants or shorts.  No jean shorts or short/shorts are allowed.  This uniform changed was just announced.  We apologize for the short notice.

Please have all pledge money for Wednesday's walk-a-thon in by Tuesday.  Mrs. Marsh and the Family Council are hoping that ALL students are able to raise $20.  We will begin our walk at 11AM on Wednesday!

When I first received your envelope, I thought, WOW!  The New Bedford students wrote another letter to us!  I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the envelope today.
 
THANK YOU, thank you, for the beautiful well wishes for my retirement!  I just love the cards -- especially Sydney's "to a teacher who needs a good and long vacation!"  Natasha's "at least you won't have to deal with screaming kids."  and "this is not a retirement card but have a good time after you leave work card!" I'll carry with me MANY happy memories of our times together! Mahalo!
 
I'll be off on my trip to Korea on Monday, May 31st and I'll return from Osaka, Japan, on June 17th.  I'll be attending a educator's conference in Reno in July and inbetween, we're renovating our kitchen (into a great room) and our master bedroom into a master suite.  There are many things I'll now have time to do...like scrapbooking, beading, gardening, and reading -- the best part is that I get to choose what I want to do during the day without having to be anywhere at a certain time!  Well, anyway, that's what I'm thinking will happen!
 
Kids Voting Hawaii is also asking me to get back on the board, so I think I'll be busy with that election process.  This year our governor's seat is open and our mayor is "thinking about" resigning to run for governor. I'll still be "working" with students with exercising their civil responsibilities.
 
I'm in school today to prep for our Bridging Ceremony ("graduation") that will be held tomorrow.  We give out certificates of completion and we have "prizes" for several special students -- example "I survived Mrs. Yap's class" or "social butterfly," etc.  The parents are preparing decorations and we've catered a dinner.
 
The students start their summer vacation in 2.5 days and they return on August 11th. If you don't mind, I'm leaving your name and address for the teacher who is taking my place.  His name is John Epstein.  Hopefully, he'll keep up the penpal connection.

Dear Families,

The Drama Club's production of ANNIE will be on New Bedford's Comcast!  The production will be showing Saturday, May 22 on Channel 17.  It will show at 10:00 am and then repeat again at 8:00 pm.

Cast members will be receiving individual DVDs as soon as they are ready.

Ms. Zajac went to the Museum of Natural History in New York City  this weekend.  I was in rock HEAVEN!!  If only the Rock and Mineral and Gems rooms were my classroom!  Or, better yet the WHOLE museum!!  This museum is a must see if you're in New York.  (Think "Night at the Museum"!)

While I couldn't bring the entire rock collection back with me, I did get a sample of dinosaur coprolite.  Everyone got to touch it.  If you haven't heard of this type of fossil, click HERE to learn a little bit more. 

Have you seen the Walk-a-thon sponsor sheet that went home last week?  GLCPS is having a walk-a-thon on Wednesday, May 26th.  The purpose of the walk-a-thon fund raiser is to purchase new classroom furniture of desks and chairs for as many classrooms as possible.  (5th grade got the first round, and we love them!) 

We are hoping that each family will be able to raise at least $20 in support of this effort.  The top fund raiser will win $100 in cash!  Other prizes for top earners will be available as well.  All donations should be sent to school prior to the walk-a-thon. 

Please feel free to come by Riverside Park on Bellville Ave. after 11AM to cheer our walkers on.  We will be using the track that surrounds the soccer field.  Mayor Lang will be there to kick off the event!

Dear Families,

We wanted to remind you that MCAS testing starts tomorrow.  Our first round will be in Math on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The second round starts NEXT Monday and Tuesday (May 17th & 18th) for Science. 

Please make sure your child is well-rested and has breakfast on the morning of the testing.  Please avoid sugary cereals in the morning.  We've noticed the "peak and crash" syndrome!  A little protein goes a long way. 

There won't be any homework on the nights prior to the testing.

Hello GLCPS Families,

I think it's safe to say, spring has finally arrived!  Ahhhhh!  While I'm sure we're all appreciating the warmth and the longer days, Ms. O'Gallagher and I want to remind everyone school is still in FULL swing.  There is nightly homework, daily classwork, projects, multi-day assignments, 2 more MCAS tests, and a final POL.  It is NOT time to start kicking back.  That happens at dismissal on June 18th.  NOT BEFORE!!  Please use the homework hotline to check on daily assignments. Please check backpacks for a field trip permission form for our trip to the Minute Man National Park in Concord and Lexington.  The trip is on Thursday, April 8th.  ALL students should plan on bringing a lunch.  It is also an extended day trip with classes returning at 4PM.  Parents will need to pick up their children at 4PM.

A big thanks goes out to Lizzie, Crystal, Diamani, Amara, Mea, and Anna for their great team effort in getting our rooms ready for the High Tech High teachers' visit tomorrow!  With Ms. O'G out sick and Ms. Zajac at the drama club rehearsal, the girls worked for 2 hours making things look ready for company!

Dear Parents,

Next week begins the 2009-2010 school year MCAS testing.  The first round is for English Language Arts and reading comprehension.  The dates are March 24 & 25.  Testing starts at approximately 8:30 and will continue until all students have completed the given sections. 

We have found that breakfasts which have protein in them give the students better energy to run on that sugar.  So, for MCAS, Count Chocula, Fruity Pebbles, Pop Tarts should be on hold.  Eggs, meats, and cheeses are better brain foods!

We will make sure each child has reading material to have after they complete the test.  State guidelines are very strict about talking while the test is being administered. 

The next round of testing for Math and Science are in May.  The dates are on the class calendar on the left of this site.  Emails will be sent a day before to remind you.

We look forward to your cooperation of having your child present and on time during these important test dates.

Tuesday will be the 5th and 6th grade field trip to the Zeiterion Theater to hear the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. Several sets of field trip permission slips were sent home because the Symphony had a schedule conflict.  13 members of our team have not returned the correct permission slips and will not be allowed to leave the building without them.  If in doubt, please bring in a signed note allowing permission to go hear the lovely concert the Symphony gives us each year.

How did this happen already??  Getting ready for our March 3rd POL will be much easier if everyone comes in with their 8x11 drawing of their animal.  Research for habit, diet and life cycle begins on Monday.  The My Special Number project is due on Thursday!

We have an exciting opportunity to offer Team OZ for April vacation.  The New Bedford Ocean Explorium is offering a science-based vacation program which will be held from Tuesday, April 20th - Friday, April 23rd from 9AM-2:00PM.  Breakfast and lunch will also be provided.  The best part...it's FREE!!

The focus of the program is climate change.  Students will look at problems, solutions, and personal steps to improve the condition of the environment.  There are only 20 spots available and the course is being offered to ALL New Bedford Public School middle school students.  Call soon!

All of this will benefit our 5th graders as our final POL will deal with climate change.

Also, for Ms. Zajac's homeroom, our Hawaiian pen pals will be here in New Bedford on Monday, April 19th.  It is our hope that most of our homeroom can be at the Whaling Museum to meet them in the afternoon.  Ms. Zajac will be providing details as our pen pals get specifics about their itinerary.

Vacations...don't you love them!!

Our next field trip will be on Thursday, Feb. 11th to the New England Aquarium in Boston.  We will leave school at 8:30 and return at 5:00PM.  We will allow ipods on this trip but students MUST BE responsible for their own equipment.  Cameras are also OK.

Students may bring a lunch from home, get a bagged lunch at school (regular lunch fees), or purchase a lunch at the NEAq cafeteria.  Lunches are around $5.  There is a variety of options typically including pizza, sandwiches, salads, chips, and desserts.  The Aquarium also has a extensive gift shop.  (This is the only trip we give 15 minutes to the visit the gift shop!)

For parent chaperons, the bus will be a tight fit!  We'll be very cozy!

Again, we appreciate your support with the bake sale to help fund this trip!

Ms. O'G and Ms. Zajac want to thank all the wonderful bakers in the OZ team for their delicious support for our New England Aquarium field trip bake sale.  We raised $178.30!!  Our goal was $200 to completely cover the cost of the field trip so this was VERY close.  We also want to thank Mrs. Stolmeier and Mrs. Ferreira for supervising the bake sale for all the lunch shifts.  We couldn't have done it without you!!

Fifth graders will be testing this year in the content areas of English, Math and Science.  The ELA testing is in March while Math and Science are in May.  Ms. O'G and Ms. Zajac will be assigning many practice questions and reviewing test skills as these important state tests approach. 

Mr. O'Mara has provided a great link to help the students prepare at home as well.  It was designed by the Boston Public School System.  If you'd like to try some of the practice questions, use the 4th grade sections.  Here's the link:  MCAS PRACTICE

Please let friends and family know that applications are now available for the 2010-2011 school year.  If current GLCPS families have other children they'd like to enroll, they must fill out an application.  Siblings have first preference and do not need to part of the lottery.  However, an application is still necessary. 

The will be a Community Open House on Thursday, January 28th from 6-8PM.  Any family interested in GLCPS should attend.

Please return ALL THREE signed permission slips to school on Tuesday.  Parent chaperons will be chosen on Tuesday, Jan. 19th for all field trips.

 Also, please remember to vote in the senate election on Tuesday, Jan. 19th.  It's an important day in Massachusetts.  Let your voice be heard!

Field trip packets for upcoming field trips will be distributed on Friday.  The packet will contain 3 field trip permission forms, an envelope for payments, and a flier for the fund raising bake sale on Jan. 29th.  Please ask your child for it for it.  A lottery will be held for chaperons.  All chaperones will be picked on Tuesday of next week.

Thanks to Mrs. Stolemeier who volunteered to help during the Jan. 29th  bake sale.  If any of you have time to help out between 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, we'd sure appreciate it.  Please notify Ms. Zajac or Ms. O'Gallagher if you're able to help out for a lunch shift.

The YWCA and the Boys and Girls Club of New Bedford is sponsoring a new after school for girls in grades 5-8 called Girls Exclusive.  It will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-5PM from January 19th - March 4th.  If you are interested in enrolling your daughter, please call Mr. Ferreira at school or call Kathleen Stykowski at 508-990-2358.

A community celebration of the life of Dr. King will be held at Keith Middle School on Sunday, January 17th from 4PM-6PM.  Performers will include students from Berkley College of Music, NBHS Band and Jazz Choir, Dr. Steve Perry from CNN, and a musical group from Worcester called Hip-Hop.  Free admission.

The school's web site has been upgraded!  Miss Wick and Miss Besciani have been hard at work!  While sections are still "under construction", the site is much more user-friendly.  Click HERE for a peak!

Nurse Connolly and Mr. Borowicz will be conducting postural screening next week on Wednesday and Thursday.  Mrs. Connolly is requesting that all girls have a bathing suit, bra or halter top to change into for the screening. All students were giving a notice to day for you to read.  Please ask you child for it.

Hi Everyone,

Celestial powers are working to making this year's New Year's Eve a little more special.  It's time to get back outside in cold and dark of night to view something that only happens "once in a blue moon"... a BLUE MOON!!  Don't expect to literally see a blue moon.  This full moon will be its regular color, reflecting the light of the sun.  The term means this full moon is the second full moon of the month.  This doesn't happen very often since the cycle of the moon lasts 29.5 days. (Every OZ student knows that but I included that for parents who want to be smarter than a 5th grader!) Blue Moons typically happen once every 2.5 years.

Hello Families, 

I have special request for everyone to do over vacation.  We will be doing our first scientific research project at the end of January. In order to do the research properly, all students should have a library card for the New Bedford Public Library. If you do not own a current library card, please use this week to get to your local branch and sign up for one.  A parent will need to be present.

We will be learning how to use the electronic card catalog and ordering books from the SAILS network.  Our school does not have a library so this is an  important resource.

Ms. Zajac and Ms. O'Gallagher will be monitoring use and adjusting assignments to best match what each student needs and what is going on in the classroom.

Our team had the pleasure of learning from Professor Jacek Sulanowski, Professor Emeritus of Bridgewater State College.  Professor Sulanowski is an expert in paleontology and shared his extensive collection of fossils with the team.  He also confirmed that Mrs. Marsh's green rock, who we call Green Monster, is in fact marble!  (Ms. Zajac was very excited for the correct identification!  Professor Sulanowski is a great teacher!)  Remember all roads (literally!!) lead back to geology.  Keep your eyes open for interesting specimens!  A pocketful of rocks is a good thing!

Vaccinations for the H1N1 flu will be given in school tomorrow, December 16th.  All students who returned the appropriate permission slip will receive the shot.  Please call Nurse Connelly if you have any questions.

We will be working on developing PowerPoints on rock types this coming week.  It would be very helpful if all students could have a USB jump drive to hold their work.  Our computers can be somewhat temperamental and I don't want any anyone to experience the agony of lost work!  I have seen very inexpensive 2 GB jump drives at Target and WalMart.  All have been under $10.  Thanks for your support!

The Community Service Club is running a food drive for the next 2 weeks.  Please send as many non-perishable items as you can to help this worthy cause.

Team OZ started the Geology Unit.  It's one of Ms. Zajac's favorites!  I'm asking everyone to activate their inner geologist and be on the look-out for interesting rocks.  "Interesting" means something that  catches your eye and you'd want to spend some time looking at it.  If anyone is going on a trip, rocks from away are greatly encouraged. (We have some from Switzerland, France, Japan, Newfoundland and Hawaii!) We going to develop a Geology Museum and will need many specimens.  Fill up your pockets with rocks and bring them in!  Rock on, Team OZ!!

Friday will be another dress down in jeans field trip fund raiser.  Uniform shirts are required.  The cost of being casual is $1.  The last jean day raised over $300.

Kids are taught that when the pilgrims arrived in America, they landed on Plymouth Rock. Well, it might not have gone down like that. According to George Mason's History News Network, the Plymouth Rock theory rests on the "dubious testimony" of one man. Historians argue that pilgrims first landed at Provincetown (not Plymouth). Still, one can visit Plymouth Rock if so inclined. According to the Plymouth Rock Foundation, the rock once weighed thousands of pounds. Over the years, the rock split and parts washed out to sea. Pilgrim Hall Museum writes that the world's most famous rock weighs around several tons, a big drop since its heyday. Today, the remains of the rock are housed in a special building so tourists can gawk from a safe distance.  Photos aren't exactly awe-inspiring.

Did the first Thanksgiving have turkey?
Probably not. The Christian Science Monitor hosts an excellent article on the first Thanksgiving that happened back in 1621. According to the journals of several of the colonists, deer and large amounts of "fowl" were enjoyed by the pilgrims. However, instead of that being turkey, it's more likely the hunters brought back duck or geese. So why did turkey become associated with the holiday? According to Slate, price may have been a chief reason. "Among the big birds, turkey was ideal for a fall feast. Turkeys born in the spring would spend about seven months eating insects and worms on the farm, growing to about 10 pounds by Thanksgiving." Additionally, they were cheaper than geese. Good news for geese, bad news for the turkey.

Who made Thankgiving official?
Ladies and gentlemen, let's give it up for President Lincoln! That's right, Honest Abe is responsible for making Thanksgiving an official holiday in 1863. National Geographic hosts a blog on some surprising facts about the holiday and notes that Lincoln may have been swayed by magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Historians say she was a big proponent of making Thanksgiving a national holiday. Mr. Lincoln apparently agreed.

The new GLCPS Middle School Student Council is being formed.  Mrs. Marsh asked 5th grade students to self-nominate themselves for 2 positions on the Student Council.  The enthusiasm for the OZ team was terrific.  Six students put in application papers.  They were Anna, Mea, Michael Terence, Jordyan, and Sabria. Speeches were given on Thursday morning in front of the entire 5th grade and elections followed.  The top vote getters were Joan Martinez and Samuel Shuman from the Chouinard/Elias team.  Our Anna came in 3rd with 25 votes.  Our entire team wishes Joan and Sam great success in their new positions.

Today marked the beginning of the G.R.E.A.T. program in co-opoeration with the New Bedford Police Department. This is a nationally recognized program. We are so thrilled to have Officer Henry Andrade back as the instructor.  The goal of this program is to recognize how gangs work and give students tools to resist gang involvement and stay safe.  Another benefit of the program is an opportunity for free participation in the Boy and Girls Club summer program.

This is a reminder to send in $2 with your child on Monday for Wednesday's Community Breakfast.  So far, we've only collected $18!  We will need the contribution from each student in order for this tradition to continue this year.  We look forward to your support.  Also, many thanks to the parents who have offered to volunteer. 

Our 5th graders will do their first Presentation of Learning, POL, on Tuesday, November 24th begininng at 9AM.  Presentations of The Explorers will be presented in both classes.  If you're interested in attending, please come by between 9:00-11:00. 

The Senior Class fundraiser, Holiday Fest, will take place at school on Saturday, November 21st between 8AM and 4PM.  There will be a craft fair, make and take an ornament, picutes with Santa, stocking stuffer sale, a raffle and auction.  Go join the fun!

Notices went home last week about the Community Breakfast on Wednesday, November 25th.  We are looking for some parent volunteers to set up the cafeteria between 8:00 and 8:45.  Students will arrive at 9.  If any of you can help, please let Ms. Zajac or Ms. O'Gallagher know.  Also, there is a $2 donation for supplies.  We need all money in by Monday, November 23rd.  As always, thanks again for your support.

The Leonid Meteors are in the sky tonight.  Unfortunately, the best viewing time will be at 4AM.  Here are some details from space.com if you are up for an astronomical adventure.

How to watch

The best viewing will be in rural areas. Get out of town if you can. If you have local lights, scout a location in advance where the lights are blocked by a building, tree or hill.

Dress warmly, and take a blanket or lounge chair so you can lie back and scan as much of the sky as possible. "At this time of year, meteor watching can be a long, cold business," Rao reminds people.

Leonids can appear anywhere, but if you trace them back, they all point to a hub, or radiant, in the constellation Leo – hence the name.

Give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Then give the show at least a half-hour. The hourly rates stated above typically come in bursts, with lulls that may test your patience. No special equipment is needed. Telescopes and binoculars are of no use because meteors move too quickly.

When to watch

Earth will pass through one of the denser debris streams at around 4 a.m. EST (1 a.m. PST) Tuesday. If you have only an hour or less to watch, center it around this time. Leo will be high in the sky for East Coast skywatchers, putting more meteors into view. In the West, Leo will be low in the eastern sky at this time, so fewer shooting stars will be above the horizon, and therefore Western skywatchers should also try to stick it out until daybreak.

Across Europe, the best bet is to watch anytime between 1 a.m. and daybreak local time.

The planet will pass through an even denser stream later, just before dawn Wednesday in Indonesia and China, but that show won't be visible from North America because it will be daytime here.

One truth about the Leonids: They always produce, and they sometimes produce spectacular, unforgettable fireballs.

Students of Team OZ will be knee-deep in project-based learning next week.  In Ms. O'Gallagher's class, students will be putting the final touches on their explorer projects that will be their first GLCPS "POL", or Presentation of Learning.  They will also be visited by Professor Timothy Walker from UMASS/Dartmouth who will do his own "presentation of learning" about Portuguese explorers. 

In Science, we will be traveling throughout the Solar System.  Our goal is to learn the order of the planets, terrestrial and gaseous planets, size comparison, and important information about each.  We will be achieving this through "jigsawing."  We'll working together on size and order for state standards and then small groups will become "experts" on an individual planet or celestial body.  Our goal will be to turn the classroom or conference room into a mini-planetarium for the school community to visit by Friday.  Let's hope all flu germs have passed!!  We need every 5th grade "explorer" of history and space here all week!

Four years ago, the Community Service Club I ran raised $50 at a bake sale to lend to Kiva.org.  The Kiva organization works with banks and community organization around the world to help lend small amounts of money (usually less than $1000) to people in typically 3rd world countries who are trying to start or improve small businesses.  I am happy to report our initial $50 investment has been paid back for a 4th time, and we will be lending it out again this week.  If you have a moment, visit their web site at www.kiva.org.  They are always looking for new investors to help those who starting small businesses that support families and provide commerce in many rural communities.

Let's try again!  If it's a clear night on Wednesday night, we'll meet once again at Fort Taber to view the nearly full moon - actually a waning gibbous.  6:30 will be the meeting time.  

Congratulations go out to Madyson, Elizabeth, Mariah, Jayme and their DEDICATED parents for braving the cold and the clouds to get a peak at the full moon.  After nearly 60 minutes, we got about 10 seconds of viewing!  Stayed tuned.  We'll keep a "weather eye" out on Wednesday night.  If Mother Nature cooperates, we'll try to see the waning gibbous moon.

All Math and ELA classes start this week as well as the enrichment programs.  (Drama Club begins in January.)  All sessions end at 4PM.  Please be on time with pick ups.

Ms. O'Gallagher and Ms. Zajac want to say a big thank you to all the families who attended Parent Conferences last night.  It is always a pleasure to see all of you and share information about life at GLCPS.  Please know we are here for any question you might have at other times. 

After School programs including Math and English groups will begin on Monday, October 26th.  If you haven't turned in the forms for enrollment, please do so by Monday so groups can be properly formed.  Students involved with Math and English groups should attend twice a week for maximum benefit.  All current after school programs end PROMPTLY at 4PM.  Please make sure rides are here on time.  If a child is picked up later three times, they may be dismissed from the after school program.

Student-lead parent conferences will be held on Thursday, October 15th from 12:30 PM to 7PM.  Students are expected to attend the conference with their families and present their work.  It is also the Title 1 Literacy Night with opportunities to get involved with the Family Council, visit a book store sponsored by Baker Books, and get the latest information about what's happening at school. 

Please ask your child for the conference appointment form, fill in your top 2 choices of meeting times, and return it back to school by Thursday.  We will send out confirmation notices on Tuesday.

Team OZ is working towards a lofty goal - 100 consecutive days of 100% of the class doing their homework in Math and Science.  Each homeroom is trying to meet mildstone waypoints on the Road to Excellence.  I'm happy to report the O'Gallagher homeroom as met their first mildstone - 10 straight days of homework!  They earned a "no homework" break night on Tuesday but were right back at it and are now at day 12!  CONGRATULATIONS O'G HOMEROOM! 

The OZ Team sends a hardy thanks to the New Bedford Ocean Explorium, ECHO, and UMASS/Dartmouth for their generous support of EnviroLab.  It's one of the best field trips of the year!

A day at the beach with 42 kids?  No problem!  Our first field trip of the year was a great success!  The OZ team search for shell and fish species, sea weed species, living and non-living examples, tested sea water for salinity, temperature, and turbidity, checked atmospheric conditions and had enough time for a fun photo shoot around Fort Taber.  Many thanks to all the parents who helped out.  We especially want to thank Mr. Jack Crowley from the New Bedford Ocean Explorium who helped with species identification and a seine net tow.  We can't wait for EnviroLab on Monday!
