Nolan makes podium at State!!

Congrats to Nolan Tonkyn...his 15:41.1 gave him the fastest all-time time at the State meet for an Albany runner. He eclipsed the top time previously set by Sean Carey of 16:44.  And, he finished 8th overall-qualifying for a medal!

Nolan Tonkyn kicks butt at NCS

Congrats to Nolan Tonkyn--Nolan smashed the Albany High record today at NCS, with a time of 15:25. That time was a full 45 seconds faster than the previous record that he co-held with Chris Gioia and Colin Bauer. In addition, Nolan's sixth place finish qualified him for next weeks State meet at the infamous Woodward Park. Only one other Albany athlete, Sean Carey, has ever qualified for State on behalf of Albany High. It is quite an accomplishment!!! I can already hear those college recruiters knocking on Nolan's door!

Enough about Nolan...what about the rest of our runners? They ran absolutely great, with most accomplishing all-time PRs over this course. Especially noteworthy was Suzanne Becker, who once again managed to break another Albany High school record--besting the NCS time of 19:29 previously set by Jackie Quinn in 2005. Suzanne ran an outstanding time of 19:20 to finish 24th overall in the toughest Division III.

Our boys team just missed out on setting the all-time team time...coming up only 8 seconds short of that goal.

Nolan Tonkyn--6th place--15:25 (PR from last year by 48 seconds) Albert Buck-Bauer--38th place--16:19--PR of 2 seconds from Farmers and 45 seconds from last year NCS Erlend Harbo--72nd place--17:11--PR from Farmers of 42 seconds Stuart Adams--76th place--17:16--PR from last year's NCS by 36 seconds Teo Maldonado--86th place--17:34--PR from Farmers by one minute Hannon Ayer--98th place--18:01--PR from Farmers by 53 seconds Kai Wilmsen--103rd place--18:14--PR from last year NCS by 35 seconds

Girls also had plenty of PRs...

Suzanne Becker--24th place--19:20--PR by 13 seconds from last year's NCS Thalia Tom--61st place--20:32--PR by 45 seconds from last year's NCS Dorothea Miller--63rd place--20:33--PR from Farmers by 38 seconds Siobhan Bauer--81st place--21:29--PR from Farmers by 1 minute, 7 seconds and from 2009 NCS by 36 seconds.

Mari Kamiya--83rd place--21:33--PR--1st race here Connie Ma--87th place--21:46--PR from last year's NCS by 48 seconds Ya Davis--90th place--22:03--PR--1st race here

NEXT UP...WASH UP AND DRY THOSE SINGLETS AND WARMUPS..CAN HAND IN TO MS. BUCK-BAUER IN ROOM 312, PLEASE DO SO THIS WEEK...

TEAM PARTY WILL TENTATIVELY BE SCHEDULED ON DECEMBER 8TH OR 9TH...KEEP BOTH DATES OPEN...MORE TO COME LATER ON THAT...

THANKS FOR A GREAT SEASON...AND GOOD LUCK TO NOLAN NEXT WEEK.

Bsal League Champ Results

2011 Bsal Champs.xlsx

League Champs at Pt Pinole

Congrats to Albany for four 2nd place finishes and one third place finish.  It is tough competing with St. Marys, but we came away from the league championships knowing that we put it all out there on the course and gave them a good solid competitive race.  Plus, we had thirteen medalists this year!!!   I might also add that we had "15" personal bests on this course from last season.  Way to Go!!

Of particular recognition...
Thalia--running with a bloody toe nail....next time, we send her for a pedicure...(note: do not cut nails the day of a race!)
Dorothea--coming off her injuries this season,  Dorothea had a break-through race and is peaking at just the right time for NCS.
Mari and Ya--both had the sniffles, but still slogged through the race.  Good strong finishes for both and now have two weeks to get healthy and rested for NCS!!
Ben--also with the sniffles, but outstanding race in frosh/soph.
Brandon--37 second PR in the JV race.
Michael--30 sec. PR in frosh/soph race
Nolan--49 second PR in varsity race
Teo--46 sec. PR in varsity race
Kai--39 sec. PR in varsity race
Siobhan--36 second PR in varsity race

COMING UP!!!

1. The following varsity will continue to practice for NCS!!!  Congrats!!!
Nolan, Albert, Erlend, Stuart, Teo,  Hannon, Kai (alternates: Ben, Michael)
Suzanne, Thalia, Dorothea, Ya, Mari, Siobhan, Connie (alternate: Saskia)
Meet in front of gym on Monday--we will be going over to Hayward NCS course. Let me know right away if unavailable.

2. The rest of team should wash and dry their uniforms--please take all the pins off!! Place in bag and bring to me at track on Wednesday at 2:30 please.

3. We are still waiting for some of our teams to complete their fund-raising efforts. Final results cannot be tabulated and winners cannot be awarded until we receive all proceeds. Please bring your monies by on Wednesday at the track.

Another Team Sweep vs. Salesian and Piedmont

Congrats to our XC cougars on a clean sweep of Piedmont and Salesian.
With that being our last league meet,  we are clearly improving and peaking for our league championship meet to be held at Pt. Pinole on November 3rd.

For those interested,  at yesterday's meet we had  twenty-five athletes achieving PRs or PBs (personal records or personal bests) over the Cesar Chavez course.  Congrats to them all.  Especially note worthy yesterday was the JV girls team--led by Julie Kao, Ivory Beltran, Hannah Schoenberger, Faustine Luo and Berhana Jones. All had PRs.  And, the JV boys team had a strong showing led by Matthew Blankinship, Ben Boskin, Conner Brown, Lucas Kampman, Jackie Hong and Aaron Tiedemann--there was only a 40 second gap between our 1st and 6th runners.  Way to Go!!

Also very strong performances from our Var Girls--with PRs fromThalia, Connie, Ya, Mari and Saskia.  And, our boys Var had probably the toughest challenge facing Piedmont and came thru with the victory.  Nolan and Albert had strong races, despite the howling winds.  And, Teo, Erlend and Stuart ran great and beat out the 3rd Piedmont runner--just as planned!  Plus, PRs from Kai and Hannon as they keep getting faster.

Teams Place 2nd and 4th at Mariner Invite

Running against some tough schools,  our boys and girls  ran well enough to place second and fourth as a team.   Nolan and Thalia led their teams. Strong closings by Ya and Dorothea and Michael, who moved up the last mile. Looks like Nolan and Albert now have "top" two boys times over this course for !!! Way to Go!!!

Results posted below.

Albany sweeps league meet

John Swett, St. Pats/St. Vincents and Holy Names were no match for the depth of our team on this day.  The course was changed a bit due to construction--we started by having to run up a hill!!  This did not deter our Cougars from a dominating performance.

Records:

Varsity Girls:6-1

Varsity Boys: 4-2

JV Girls: 6-1

JV Boys: 5-1

Cougars run over 250 miles at fun-d run raiser

Congrats to our Cougars on running all those laps and securing all those sponsors for our cross country team.  We are still compiling and tabulating results of monies collected and to be collected.  Teo has already collected nearly $200, all thanks to his Herculean effort on the track.

Torrential Rains and Making a Mark at Cesar Chavez

Albany hosted a meet at Cesar Chavez park, taking on St. Joes and Encinal in Bsal league battle.  Coach Craig got out to the park around 1pm to do his chores...marking the course with chalk on the paved portions and flour on the dirt trails.  As he went through the routine,  he witnessed the blue angels passing overhead...quite  a site.

It was almost 2:10pm and the bus had failed to come to pick up the athletes and disaster was avoided as Thalia found her clothes bag! Meanwhile, a few scary and puffy dark clouds began to loom overhead.

Coach finished marking well in advance of the meet...wait, it was raining...wait, this was no sprinkle...it was a downpour, a monsoon..and, away went all the markings.

Many thanks to Michael Williams and our JV boys for going out over the course and helping to re-mark the course.

Also, many thanks to our parent volunteers: the Dan and Dean on bikes show, Elizabeth and Carl, our bus chaperones, Phil, Chris, Dave,   Andrea, Barbara, and Stephanie.  Plus, many thanks to Richard and Marguerite and Sarah for helping with timing, set-up and tagging.

3 out of 4! Albany, Encinal and St Joes

A fun meet on our home course.  We had a few PRs--Nolan, Teo, Stuart, Siobhan, Connie, Thalia--most of the JV times were not great--perhaps due to the wind and muddy trail conditions.

Nolan dropped over 32 seconds off his previous best on this course to come away with Cougar victory.  Our Varsity Boys came up just short of beating St. Joes.  Arcadio--in just his first race--amazed everyone with his super run--coming in just behind Stuart as our #4 guy.  As said before, we are very close to being able to run with the St. Joes and St. Mary teams--we just need to avoid having their teams get two runners together in front of one of our runners.

Our Varsity Girls really gutted it out...both Ya and Dorothea attempted to run despite having foot/ankle issues.  We really appreciate their gutty determination in just toeing the line at this meet.  Kudos go out to Thalia for really sticking with it to come in 2nd to St. Joes.  And, we could see that Suzanne was suffering, but she managed to edge out the #2 St Joes girl.  Siobhan continues to be on the comeback trail--moving up to our #3 girl--with a painless free performance.  She also held off the #3 St. Joes girl.  And, Ya beat the #4 St. Joes girl.  Perhaps most instrumental was Connie and Mari coming in ahead of the #5 St. Joes girls--thus, we had six runners in before their fifth runner finished!  The big difference between the boys and girls race is that St. Joes was unable to get more than one runner ahead of each of our runners.

Cannot forget JVs--super runs by Saskia, Tamia and Julie to finish 1-2-3 and guarantee the V.  Also liked the strong efforts from Maddie, Faustine and Berhana, who finished together.

Boys JV was also victorious--with Conner and Michael running a bit slower than last season.  Jackie, Cameron and Aaron were instrumental in this win..with them coming in close together as our 4-5-6 guys.

Results (below) and pics have been posted.

We will have another chance to improve on our times this next week against St. Pats/St. Vincents, Holy Names, and John Swett.  Girls will get to go up against top Bsal runner, Julia Gullickson.

1st League Meet--with defending Champs St. Marys

Our Albany Cougars Cross Country held their own in competing with the highly ranked St. Marys Panthers yesterday. We had a few people banged up and missing,  yet we still managed to make it a very entertaining day of racing.  This certainly bodes well for the remainder of the season.   If we can get healthy and get our runners in the spots they are capable of,  there is an excellent chance that we will suprise everyone with a league championship at Pt. Pinole in November.

Kudos to Nolan Tonkyn for a super fast time over the course...I have been told by the St Mary's coach that time may have been the 2nd fastest time ever on that course.  Definitely the fastest Albany time ever!!!

See Notes below about some thoughts about how we might beat St Marys.  Overall,  most of our runners had excellent starts--with both varsity teams showing strength at the front at the 1/4 mile mark.  The JVs definitely needed to get out a bit faster at the start.

This week, we will be hosting the very powerful St. Joes and Encinal teams at Cesar Chavez park.   With that in mind, we need some volunteers to help us host the meet--all volunteers should be there by 3:15 pm--need course monitors, finish line and chute assistance, scorers and timers.  IF YOU CAN HELP,  PLEASE LET ME KNOW RIGHT AWAY.

Stinson Beach a Blast!!

Lots of fun at Stinson Beach today. Twenty-three athletes and adults ventured out to the beach....suprising how warm the water was!!

Lowell Invite at Golden Gate Park--Sept. 17th

Congrats to our Cougars for a fine performance at the Lowell Invite.
We came away with a few medals too!!!

Especially outstanding runs by Thalia and Nolan to top off our Varsity Girls and Boys Teams.

Kudos to Mari for her medal as well in the JV girls race.

When you look at the results--look to see how many people were just in front of you by the same time or a second or so...this tells us that we need to give that little bit extra to get in front of those other runners before we reach the finish line.  Your beating out one or two more runners could help your team win a meet!!!

Also, we had a lot of PR type races--which shows that we are rounding into shape.  Hopefully this will translate to
our being competitive with defending champions, St. Mary's in less than two weeks time.

Results are posted below..also, if anyone has photos...please get them to me for posting.

Ed Sias Invite 2011

Cougars "Compete" and finish strong 2nd at Bsal League Champs

Our Albany Cougars Cross Country Team finished a strong second in each of the five races held at the Bsal League Champs.  Tons of PRs over the Pt. Pinole course as well as all league honors to Suzanne Becker, Brisa Bodell, Connie Ma and Siobhan Bauer for the girls and Nolan Tonkyn, Albert Buck-Bauer, Stuart Adams and Aidan Juengling-Bean for the boys.

In addition, top honors to Maddie Johnson, Molly Greene, Julie Kao, Faustine Luo, Grace Lu and Berhana Jones in the JV Girls; to Oscar Rodriguez, Matthew Blankinship, Hannon Ayer, Michael Williams, Ben Boskin and Jackie Hong in the Frosh/Soph boys; and to Kai Wilmsen, Tim Clopp, Conner Brown, Alex Muschler and Juneyoung Jeong in the JV Boys.

That makes it "25" medal winners for our 2010 team, with "8" earning all-league honors!!!!  Last year we had "20" medal winners, with "6" making all-league honors.

Results are below--still awaiting JV boys results.  Photos also posted.

Cougars fast at Mt Sac

Our top boys and girls runners ventured down to SoCal to see how they matched up with some of the finest high school runners on perhaps the most famous west coast cross country course at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. Sac).

Suzanne won the frosh girls race with a strong time of 19:50 and Thalia also finished in the medals with her top ten finish.  In the boys varsity, Nolan had a great race to finish in the medals as well.  In addition, our JV boys and varsity boys and girls teams finished in the top ten out of 30+ schools!

Cougars win 3 of 4 at Pt Pinole

Albany had a meet today with Salesian and Piedmont on Salesian's home course at Pt. Pinole.  This is also the Bsal league championship course.

JV boys and girls were dominant in their victories.  The JV girls were capably led by the winning runner, Maddie.  They finished first thru fifth, with strong supporting races by Julie, Molly, Faustine and Berhana.

The JV boys were led by Miguel, who almost caught the winner near the finish line.  He was closely followed by Matt, Conner, Hannon and Michael.

The Varsity Girls also dominated the highly ranked Piedmont girls, with victories by Suzanne (a new course record of 20:09), and strong backup from Brisa, Thalia, Connie, Siobhan, Tamia and Saskia.

Our varsity boys wasted two top/course record performances by Nolan and Albert,  only to come up short in the team race by one point to Piedmont.  Hopefully we will get them next time...at Bsal championships.

Photos have been posted.  Awaiting full results to post.

Frosh-Soph at Castro Valley Invite

We show-cased our outstanding Frosh/Soph runners today at the Castro Valley Invite.  It was quite a day, with Thalia and Oscar both finishing in the medals.  Plus,  great runs by everyone who participated...and...really enjoyed seeing the strong finishes by everyone out there today. Especially since this is not an easy course.  Results will be posted when we get them.  Photos are being posted in our pictures section.

Cougars are on a Roll!!! Victorious Again!!

Our mighty Cougars ran at Benicia State Park and easily defeated a trio of teams--John Swett, Holy Names and St. Patricks/St. Vincents.

Highlighting the day were wins bye Saskia  in the JV girls; Simon L. in the JV boys; strong races from Suzanne and the girls in the varsity race; and a win by Albert in the varsity boys race.

Most everyone managed to get extremely close to Coach's time predictions and placings--thereby insuring some strong performances by all.

Complete results are posted below.  Still waiting on full results from the Farmer Invite.

Photos have been posted on "pics" page.

Farmer Invite --Medals, Medals and More Medals!!

Cougars cleaned up at the Farmer Invite with medals galore and lots of PRs from last year's events.  This was despite the high heat on the course.  In addition,  Oscar led the team to victory in the dance contest as well.

Kudos to 1st place winners: Nolan, Conner and Suzanne.
Plus top places and medals or t-shirts to Albert, Stuart, Brisa, Thalia, Molly, Connie, Tamia and Matthew.

In addition, some great PRs by Nolan, Stuart, Albert, Juneyoung, Matthew, Connie, Ryan and Jesse.

Most important,  everyone managed to best the time of Coach Craig from the earlier Coach race!!!

1st League Meet at Crab Cove

Congrats to our Cougars Cross Country team.
We managed to win 3 of 4 meets against Encinal and St. Joes.

Results are posted below and photos have been posted by both Coach and Julian.

The JV boys and girls and the Varsity Girls were dominant in their races and
our Varsity Boys just got edged out by a State bound St. Joe's team--losing out 27 to 29.

The JV girls were ably supported by Tamia (got the win, despite playing ring around the rosie/tree several times), Julie, Faustine (strong finish), Grace (overcoming her ankles), Tianna, Berhana and Riosin (getting stronger after shin splints).

The JV boys were led by Teo (winner), Michael, Ben, Jesse,  Alex, Juneyoung, Nir, Julian and Derek.  Each boy should be commended for his efforts.

The Varsity girls race was exciting as well,  with Suzanne and Thalia and Brisa out among the lead pack with St. Joes and Encinal.  Eventually it became a battle with Suzanne and a St. Joes girl and Thalia.  At the end, it was Suzanne putting on a furious sprint to the line for the win.  Our girls were strong 1-8, with top placings by Molly, Connie, Saskia, Siobhan, and Maddie.

Our varsity boys looked ready to steal one, with St. Joes going out real fast at first and then dropping off after the first loop.  It was St. Joes, Nolan, St. Joes, Albert, St. Joes, Stuart and then Corwin and Aidan in front of the fourth and fifth St. Joes race.  By the end,  the St. Joes team had managed to get their fourth guy up there and that resulted in a win for them.  Imagine,  only one place change by us would have meant a victory for the Cougars.  We will get them next time!!

Nike Invite

Cougars ran at the the Nike Invite that is hosted by Carondolet and DeLaSalle at Newhall Park in Concord.  Varsity ran the 3 miles and everyone else the 2 miles.  Both distances featured a big climb up a large hill near the one mile mark.

Congrats to our Cougars for a nice day of running.  Everyone was so supportive of everyone else.  Special thanks to the drivers--Ruth Chang, Dan Greene, Astrid Juengling-Bean, Michele Bachmeier, and Richard Braucher.  Further kudos to Berhana Jones and mom for the tasty pineapple, and  to Mr. Adams and Mr. Braucher for the watermelon.

We finished off the day with a salute to our birthday boys of the week, Alex and Nolan.

As for the racing,  strong performances by just about everyone.  Plus, it was good to see the efforts put in by our athletes to move up on the field after mile one.

As for records,  Nolan continues his assault on the all-time Albany records at invites.  For the 2nd week in a row,  he set the record for fastest time by a Cougar on an invite course.  This time,  by some fifteen seconds!!

Albert and Stuart managed to crack the top ten of all-time times at this course.

In the girls Varsity race, Brisa and Saskia ran the 3rd and fourth fastest all time times by a Cougar on this course.

In the JV races, we had strong races from Ryan, Tim, Simon and Kai, who now have the top JV times ever over this course.

In the JV unlimited race, it was good to see Julian pull away from several of his competitors at the end of his race.

In the Frosh/Soph races,  Oscar put himself on the all-time list with the 3rd fastest time ever.  Further, it was good to see Molly, Tamia and Berhana move up on the field over the last mile of their races.

Thanks to our athletes who volunteered to work the "dunk" tank at the Solano stroll.   Hopefully everyone had fun and we made some money to boot.

Hot Day at Ed Sias!!!

Some really nice time gains by several returning vets.  Some not so nice times...most likely due to the high temps over the day.  Most pleased with "starts" and strong finishes.  Also,  we appreciated the strong efforts put out by our Cougars!!  Results are below.

Practice Meet with Berkeley at Cesar Chavez

We ran today at CC Park vs. Berkeley over the 1.6 course.  Some very nice runs by just about everybody,  with marked improvements on most PRs.  Special notice of drops in time by Berhana, Carl, Suzanne, Riosin, Connie, Saskia and Thalia.  And, all of our boys ran faster than the time trial the week before.   If this had been a scoring event,  we would have lost the VB race by score of 26-29, won the VG race by 28-31 and won the JV race.  Results are posted below.  Plus, we will be posting some incredible action photos from Michael Mejia and Coach Bayano.

STINSON BEACH...ALMOST 40+ ATTEND!!!

We had a great turnout and day at Stinson Beach.  Many thanks to all those parents who made it possible by driving our athletes out there.  There were some worries of rain and freezing temps.  Instead, we managed to get through a four mile or so run with some huge winds and a wind chill factor!!  That was followed by "ice baths" in the ocean and heart-warming food at the local establishment.  Another great excursion and fun had by all!!!  Pics are posted in the pictures section.

Time Trial at Cesar Chavez Park--1.6 miles

Some really nice running out there in rather windy conditions.  We will be racing vs. Berkeley on the same course on Tuesday...so good idea to visualize the course.  There are obviously sections of the course that you can take advantage of--particularly,  the few uphill sections.  I can also visualize you surging on some of the turns, as well.  Results are listed below near bottom of page.

PRACTICE IN FULL SWING!!!

Cougars Cross Country embarked on defending its league championship title--starting Monday, August 16th at 9am at Cougar Field track.  Over 30+ have come prepared to run and workout for 2 hours.  No ipods and cell phones during workouts.  Have running shorts and shoes.  No jeans please.  Also, good idea to bring a water bottle.  We will practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 11 am.  We will also be running on Saturday morning--meet at high school at 9am for transport to Tilden Park!!

Remember to turn in your physicals and permission slip forms...copies of these can be accessed on the website below.

Also, be sure to take a look at the photos recently added--including course photos for Bsal league champs, NCS section course photos and Mt. Sac course photos!!!

Message board

Can We Win Bsals This Year???

I think we have a great opportunity to win leagues for both the boys and girls...how can we do that...

General Requirements:

1. Stay healthy

2. Keep practicing and building up our mileage

3. Work and run together as a team!

Specifics:

1. We will have to beat St. Marys and St. Joes most likely--which means,  we need a strong showing from our top seven boys and top seven girls.  Will discuss more as season progresses....but, ask yourself,  how can you contribute to our team...

What are your Goals for the Season?

Take a look at the nice articles on goal setting listed on our website's home page.

Tell me what your goals are for you and your team?
