Paxie was a 6-7 year old female, spayed Border Collie. She was so friendly and loving, social and affectionate that she could win your heart in seconds. SHE DID MINE! She came to my rescue from a couple who had her on a rope inside about a 10 x 20 penned area away from the house. The house she longed to be near with the people she loved. The reason they used a rope in addition to the penn away from the house was because Paxie kept digging out, another sign that she longed to be with her people. She had a medal dog house under a sparcely shade tree in one corner of the penn. In the afternoon, I'm sure the sun beamed down on the house, heating it up to unbearable temperatures and angling the only shade in a direction outside the penned area.
When I went to see Paxie, it was very evident to me that she craved human contact. This was something I knew I could give her at my rescue. Something she so deserved.
The couple that had Paxie were elderly and not in very good health. I don't think they intentionally neglected Paxie or even were aware of the loneliness and cruelty they were inflicting on her. Some see dogs as "Just a Dog" and don't truly understand.
I'm writing this because I want everyone to be aware of what they offer their dogs in return for their devoted loyalty and desire to please. These precious Gifts from God deserve so much more than what some are getting. If you can't do right by a dog ~ don't get one! They are social animals. They want to be an active part of the family they live with so please don't abandon them to the back yard or punish them when they bark, dig and develop other neusance habits out of boredom. They are begging for your time. Bring them closer to you. Spend more time with your dog and let them be a big part of your life.
In the last months of her life in rescue Paxie enjoyed lots of human contact from family and visitors, freedom to be a dog, to run and play, chase squirrels and other dogs and be loved every day.
