Important Info on Danger of mixing Koolents:

Beware of mixing different colored coolants. Doing so could cause your engine some serious problems. (evelynishere, Flickr)

Dear Tom,

I own a 2006 Chevy Impala with a 3.5-liter V6 engine. The odometer is at 25,000 miles and the coolant has never been changed. The other day when I checked the overflow tank the coolant was low so I added a gallon of green anti freeze to the tank. I told my mechanic this and he said to have the system flushed immediately or trouble will crop up. Is this true?

Stanley from Reno, NV

Stan,

Yes, get that cooling system flushed immediately or you are in for massive trouble (if it hasn’t already occurred)! Your car takes the coolant Dexcool. What you added is Ethylene Glycol, a chemical that is not compatible with Dexcool. Flush the system now before you end up with major engine failure.

    Tom

This is one of those questions that I get after the fact and usually engine damage has already occurred. The green and orange coolants do not mix. There are some coolants that claim compatibility with Dexcool, but I would rather err conservatively and add what the system is supposed to take rather than take the gamble. Guard against major engine failure… read on.

Can I add the green coolant to the orange stuff?
As I stated above, the two chemicals of Ethylene Glycol (green) and Dexcool (orange) are not compatible. When mixed together they form a gel-like substance that stops coolant flow and consequently the engine overheats.

What exactly happens when these coolants are mixed?
The coolants chemically react and form a gel rather than a liquid. The coolant stops flowing through the system, clogs up coolant passageways and water jackets, radiators, and heater cores. The water pump overheats and fails due to a lack of lubricant in the coolant. Head gaskets blow, heads warp, and the engine suffers major damage.

If I have Dexcool in my car can I leave it in for the life of the car?
GM suggests flushing Dexcool for the first time in the life of the car at 150,000 miles.

Here’s the skinny on Dexcool
Eleven years ago GM introduced an engine coolant called Dexcool. It’s supposed to last 5 years or 150,000 miles but there have been problems with this coolant. Cooling systems that use Dexcool exhibit more acid buildup and rust in the system when the coolant level gets low and oxygen is allowed to enter the system. The acid eats away at head gaskets and intake gaskets. Rust builds up in the system, inhibiting coolant flow, which causes overheating. Overall, numerous cooling system problems have been attributed to the use of this controversial product, although GM sternly stands behind it. There are class action suits against GM on this issue, but no settlements have been made to date.

So what are the guidelines on maintaining Dexcool?
Here’s the bottom line when it comes to cooling system maintenance. Whether you are running Dexcool (the orange stuff) or ethylene glycol (the green stuff), inspect the coolant level and the condition/protection of the coolant at every oil change. In addition, completely flush and refill the system every 2 years or 25,000 miles whichever comes first. These actions will avert the problems associated with Dexcool or any other coolant product.

When I check my engine coolant what do I look for?
Color, consistency, and smell.

Color
The color of healthy engine coolant is green (for ethylene glycol) or orange (for Dexcool). A rusty color indicates that the rust inhibitor in the coolant has broken down and it can no longer control rust and scale buildup. The system must be cleaned/flushed and a fresh 50/50 mix of coolant installed to restore integrity. A milky color indicates the presence of oil in the system. This is not good; it usually means that a head gasket, intake manifold, or transmission oil cooler is leaking oil or transmission fluid into the engine coolant. This is a deadly mix that will kill an engine or transmission in short order. Address the problem immediately!

Consistency
The engine coolant should feel slippery to the touch and smooth (like the engine oil).  If it feels gritty, the coolant is dirty and should be flushed and replaced with a fresh 50/50 mix. If the coolant does not feel slippery then it has lost its lubricity (the lubricating and rust inhibiting agents have deteriorated) and the system is at risk for rust and scale buildup, as well as water pump wear.

Smell
Change the coolant if it smells burned. Also change the thermostat; it’s probably gone bad because it was exposed to overheating (or it caused the overheating). Overheating damages the bi-metallic spring that opens and closes the thermostat valve. Most importantly, find out what caused the system to overheat and repair it, or face major engine damage.

Welcome to Studebaker / Packard Country

Welcome to our site! Here you'll find the latest pictures and news about our group. Visit us regularly to see what we're up to.

The Studebaker / Packard Driver's Club is a Club of owner's and friends who are dedicated to keeping the Studebaker / Packard Vehicles alive. They have Rally's and get together's all over the world. The Chapter's are open to all who enjoy the Studebaker / Packard legacy.

We are looking for five member's of The Studebaker / Packard Driver's Club to help form a Governing body for our North State Studebaker / Packard Driver's Club.

We need a: President

       Vice President

       Secretary

       Treasure

       Program Director

This is our / your chance to become a part of a great organization Historically as well as Recreationally. In the past, before Computer communications, other's have tried to start a Studebaker / Packard Driver's Club in the North State. Because of lack of communications and being able to get the word out they failed.

Today, we have instant communications to most people anywhere in the world if we use it. We are hopeful there are those who are interested in forming a Club and making a go of it. The ground has been broken. Now we just need you, the fellow Studebaker / Packard owner's to get involved. We have the support of other Chapter's towards making our goals a reality.

It was learned this month that all meetings should be at a time when everyone can attend instead of just locals. It was voted on that we have a meeting on a Wednesday  evening at 5:00 P. M. and not even those locals who voted for that meeting showed up. We had one other person other than myself and my wife show up. That person drove the better part of 65 miles to make it. On our Pot Luck we had two couples and the same man who showed up this last meeting and all lived over fifty miles away. We had two Guest from The Shasta Wild Life Rescue Center also present.

If, you for some reason are not interested in forming this Club, please inform us and we will remove you from all mailings. This is for interested people who want to enjoy doing events with other's who enjoy their Studebaker's and Packard's. This was not my thoughts, but those of people of other Chapter's who commented. We are not here to be a bother towards anyone.

It is our goal to build a source of great recreation and educational enjoyment with our piers as well as future generations preserving our vehicles legacies.

We welcome all comments, Pro and Con so we will be able to understand other's thoughts and desires. Let's get together and start enjoying fun events together and with others as a group and Club.

Thank You Sincerely:

North State Studebaker / Packard Driver's Club

Coordinator

The Studebaker-Packard Corporation was the entity created by the purchase of the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, in 1954.

Packard acquired Studebaker in the transaction. While Studebaker was the larger of the two companies, Packard's balance sheet and executive team were stronger than that of the South Bend company.

It was hoped that Packard would benefit from Studebaker's larger dealer network. Studebaker hoped to gain through the additional strength that Packard's cash position could provide. Once both companies stabilized their balance sheets and strengthened their product line, the original plan devised by Packard president James Nance and Nash-Kelvinator Corporation president George W. Mason was that the combined Studebaker-Packard company would join a combined Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson Motor Car Company in an all-new four-marque American Motors Corporation.

Had the complicated set of combinations gone through as planned, the new company would have immediately surpassed the Chrysler Corporation to become the third of America's "Big Three" automobile manufacturers. However, the sudden death of Mason, the selection of the disinterested George W. Romney as his successor, and disputes over parts-sharing arrangements between the companies doomed any chance of completing the proposed merger. This failure to combine the companies effectively sealed the fates of all four.

Packard executives soon discovered that Studebaker had been less than forthcoming in all of its financial and sales records. The situation was considerably more dire than Nance and his team were led to believe; Studebaker's break-even point was an unreachable 282,000 cars at a time when the company had barely sold 82,000 cars in 1954. Furthering the new company's problems was the loss of about 30% of Studebaker's dealer network by 1956.

Following a disastrous sales year in 1956, S-P entered a management agreement with the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. C-W, led by Roy T. Hurley, insisted on major changes. All of S-P's defense contracts and plants where defense work was carried out were picked up by Curtiss-Wright, Packard production in Detroit was stopped and all remaining automotive efforts were shifted to South Bend. The Packards (for 1957 and 1958) were essentially Studebaker Presidents with large amounts of bright work. The vehicles were referred to as Packardbakers by comedians. The final Packard rolled off the assembly line in July 1958.

The one bright spot to come of the company's troubles was a distribution agreement, brokered by Hurley, with Daimler Benz. The agreement was looked on as a necessity both for the income that Mercedes-Benz could add to the company's bottom line and as another product that the increasingly disgruntled Studebaker dealer network could sell in the event that the company quit building its own cars.

Studebaker-Packard Corporation made one last stab at resurrecting the Packard nameplate. The Franco-American Facel-Vega four door sedan, which was powered by a Chrysler V8 engine, would have been rebadged as a Packard. The plans fell through when Daimler Benz demanded that Studebaker-Packard cease with the plans or risk termination of its sales agreement to sell Mercedes-Benz cars.

In 1960, the company began diverisfication efforts by buying:

  • D.W. Onan & Sons - Generators
  • Cincinnati Testing Labs - Plastics Research
  • Gering Plastics - Plastics Manufacture
  • Clarke Floor Machine Company - Fork Lifts, etc.
  • Gravely Tractors - Quality lawnmowers
  • Chemical Compounds Company - Maker of STP additives

In 1961 Sherwood Egbert was hired to be the company president. He was expected to help diversify the company. In the spring of 1962, four years after the last Packard car rolled off the assembly line, and eight years following the merger between Packard and Studebaker, the company dropped Packard from its legal name and reverted to the Studebaker Corporation name.

First letter about forming New Studebaker Drivers Chapter:

On November 12, 2009: Raymond F. Pittam a member of The Studebaker Drivers Club, Inc. sent out our first letter to prospective members towards starting and forming a Chapter in the Great Northern part of California. If and when this Chapter is properly formed and registered with the main Studebaker Drivers Club Inc of America, we will co-inside with the two great Chapters in Sacramento and San Jose, Hayward and Bay areas.

It is not, my desire to be one of the main Officiers. The main reasoning is to many times the one who Organizes a Club or organizations trys to be a dictator or ruler as to how it is run. I feel each and every member has the right and obligation to volunteer their services and wisdom towards making a club / organiztion one in whice each and every person / member has equal rights towards being heard.

I have talked to several in higher positions with the organization and they all have been extremely supportive. Now we have to all work together towards making it something we all enjoy being a part of. I have talked to several people throughout the North State who are and are not members of other Chapters and the National Organization. Some seemed excited and said they would help and become involved, and other's has flat said they are not interested in any manner. I have found that to be true in life. Some want to see things happening in a positive manner and others will stand bye and watch things go down the drain.

Now, the door is open. I have support from Bob Peterson, President of the Sequoia Chapter as well as several of their officiers. I also have letters from the President and several other main officiers of the main headquarters of The Studebaker Drivers Club Inc. with their support. The only thing holding us up, is YOU!

I am not going to start anything untill all of the Holiday's are over. But I feel the middle of January would be a great time to start. So I am making Reservations at the Grand Buffet, 2650 Hilltop Drive, Redding, Ca. 96002, Phone Numbers are 530-221-1111, or you can Fax, your reservation confirmations at least (1) One week in advance so they will have our area set up for us.

Or call me, Raymond F. Pittam, 1756 Filaree Drive, Redding, Ca. 96002, 530-222-1948 to confirm or to just talk to me about this subject. We have so far, (3) three members of both Sequoia and National who has said they are interested. We also welcome any and all comments to be added on this web site. Just sign in and make your comments and suggestions. We need all the help we can recieve.
