My name is Jennifer Beck. I am the counselor for Gum Springs Elementary School grades K-5. Formerly, I was the chairperson for the Jackson County Student Support Services Organization. I have a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a M.Ed. in guidance and counseling. I am a nationally certified counselor also. I have worked as an elementary school counselor in Jackson County for 7 years. I have also worked as a middle school counselor, a DFCS case worker, a community counselor, and activity therapist. To provide a comprehensive, developmental program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. School counselors are professional advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement. In partnership with other educators, parents and/or guardians, and the community, school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure all students have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills to contribute at the highest level as productive members of society.
It is the school counselor's duty to assist students in developing:

6. time management
7. anger management
8. drug awareness

A Panther Helper is a 5th grader that has been selected to represent GSES due to their good character, excellent grades, awesome attendance, and willingness to help others.
Recruitment for Panther Helpers will be in Spring for 4th graders wishing to apply for the following 5th grade year.

I am currently offering the following group counseling opportunities:
Friendship/Social Skills Group - students who would like to learn more about making friends, keeping friends, and/or getting along better with peers will be encouraged through role playing, sharing feelings, and discussion to practice appropriate social skills. The group will meet weekly beginning the week of February 1 for approximately 30 minutes for 6 weeks during the regular school day.
Divorce Care Group - students who are currently experiencing a divorce or have experienced a divorcce in the past year will meet to discuss their feelings surrounding divorce. Confidentiality will be stressed. The group will meet weekly beginning after Spring Break for 30 minutes for 6 weeks during the regular school day.
