Website failure
OK. I am committed to getting things posted on here. We have pictures and videos coming out our ears and if I don't do something soon..it probably won't happen. I'll do the videos first.
Hadley is now 17 months old and she is getting very chatty. She knows all kinds of words, letters and numbers. She still refuses to walk. So far she's a sit and read girl, not a get up and go girl. We'll see.
She has 6 teeth that are in or have broken through and 2 more threatening to come in anytime. She weighed in at 21 lbs, 9 oz at her last doctors visit(16 months).
We are now in Philadelphia and Hadley spends a lot of time exploring all the new places with us. We go to the zoo, and the Arboretum a lot. She can immitate all kinds of animals.
She still loves her stuffed bear "Mr Sqeakums" more than anything else. We dare not put her down without him. We went looking for a matching bear for the day this one falls apart. They don't have it in that color anymore. We got a pink one. We'll see what happens.
Hadley has been visited in Philly by sister Sarah, both sets of grandparents and her aunt Kathy. We have also had The Wardles and the Bredamus's come through town for a wedding. It's been fun.
So here are some videos..
We have fallen behind!
We have fallen behind in our journaling. We've been busy since the last post.
Let's see, for Thanksgiving we had people to our place here in Texas. Sister Sarah(RahRah) flew in for a whole week because they let them off of school for that long. We don't recall ever being off school for that long at Thanksgiving--no fair!! Jeff's parents and sister drove down from Tennessee later in the week and stayed through Saturday. Bob usually has a Sunday deadline for getting back home as the pastor needs to be where he belongs on Sunday mornings : ) It was a fun time for all of us. Everybody was saved from what could have happened to the turkey by Jeff's Mom handling things with him. We can all be thankful for that. I'm sure I'll learn how to do big items like that one of these days but it wasn't this holiday. Hadley had a special "1st Thanksgiving" outfit to wear. She had a hard time with all the new faces and the crowd in the apartment but she got better and better as the week wore on.
After everybody left we had a few weeks and weekends to ourselves. We've been going back to the same church and liking it a lot. Hadley seems to do very well in their nursery. She really comes by her stranger danger honestly. We moved right when she would have been spending lots more time with others and then she has spent so much time here in Texas with just Jeff and I. We are thankful for the chance to let her play with other kids and also interact with caring adults. They have really taken to her and we feel really good about that.
We flew out to Chicago on the 23rd of December to celebrate Christmas. We just barely made it. Chicago had already had an unreal amount of winter weather and more was scheduled for the day we flew out. As we came in for a landing at O'Hare we had to give up on the landing and go back up for another try. There was a total white out and the pilot could not see anything! We did make it down the second time and were probably some of the last people to make it into Chicago that day. Another storm was set to move in by our departure day, so we moved through the holiday knowing we had some drama ahead for our return trip. We had Christmas Eve at my cousin Teresa and Dawn's house. That is my Dad's side of the family. They are a big crowd, fun and loud. It was an eye opener for both Jeff and Hadley. Hadley got to meet lots of cousins that she had met before when she visited Chicago and a few that she had not seen yet. She was spoiled rotten by her family for Christmas. She seemed to have a lot of fun with the wrapping paper and all the excitement. I'm sure the babies can feel the good vibes in the room. Everybody is having a good time and they seem to know it. Cousin Erin and Bill were days away from having their twin boys Oliver and William. We didn't know at the time if they were boys or girls or both. We were all sad not to get to meet them but have that to look forward to. Christmas Day was at my parents and our family friends. The family friend gathering is a tradition and also a big and ever growing crowd of fun. Hadley got to spend time with the other kids and also the 2 other 2008 babies that were there. All girls! It was sweet : ) Hadley was again given far too much. We can see the trouble with these holiday timed brithdays. We'll be thinking up a plan for that. We decided to celebrate this year by going away for her birthday. We are thinking to try and make a trip the tradition. Not necessarily far away, just not our place for the day.
We got stuck due to weather when we tried to fly out of Chicago the 26th. We had to be picked up at the airport and brought back home to spend another night. We spent the next day trying to find ways home. Jeff's daughter Sarah was to fly into Texas late that next night but that had to be canceled because we weren't going to be there yet. We were concerned about how that would be rescheduled with all the business of the holiday flights. We found a way though! Jeff, Hadley and I arrived back in Austin early Sunday morning. Once we knew we would be around, we found new flights for Sarah. She flew in on the 30th of December--just in time for New Year's Eve and Hadley's birthday celebration.
On New Year's Eve Jeff, Sarah, Hadley and I got in the car and drove to Galveston Island for a few days at the beach. We had managed to find a community that had very light impact from the storm. The rest of the island was something to see though. There is much work to be done. Jeff's parents drove down from Tennessee and met us at the house on New Year's Eve. We all(even Hadley) stayed up to ring in the New Year--then we went and passed out. The house was great. We all had our own rooms and there were lots of decks with views of the water and surroundings. The temperatures were 70's during the day and it was so relaxing. Hadley's Aunt Debbie, Uncle Rick and cousin Travis drove down from Houston on Friday January 2nd to be with us fall or Hadley's first birthday! Hadley had her own little cake out of the deck so she could make a mess. The adults came inside and ate lunch and had cake of their own. We opened presents from everybody and then went for a long walk on the beach. Many sea shells were found and Hadley got her feet stuck in the water. We drove back home on Saturday evening and had one more night with Sarah before she returned to Virginia the next day. We had a great time and were so glad that we could ring in the New Year by celebrating all the joy of Hadley's first year gone by.
We came home and all promptly became sick. We've been taking it easy and are mostly on the mend. Hadley had only gotten one tooth up until Christmas and then the 2nd one broke through that next weekend. On January 4th her 3rd tooth, the upper, center right tooth broke through. We are worried she will be getting them all at once at this new pace. She's crabby like a baby would be but super cute with her new pearly whites!!
It has been a lot of activity and we are unwinding a bit and trying to work on what the next adventure will be.
Pumpkin Patch
We went to the pumpkin patch/Christmas tree farm this weekend. Wow, that was stimulating for her. Petting zoo animals, pumpkins, swings, other kids, hay bale mazes, etc. She was just taking it all in. It wore her right out! I think our next trip will need to be the zoo.
We keep thinking we might get her a haircut and then cannot bring ourselves to do it. She plays hard now and her hair is really wild afterwards : ) I don't know if Daddy is ever going to let her get a haircut at all!
She's learning
Hadley is changing all the time. She is trying out her legs when she is able to hold on to an edge and push up. She'll use the edge of our armchair and push herself up on her legs. She won't put her feet down if we try to hold her upright but she's getting more interested. Just like all the other changes, it is shocking to see her do something so different. Mama cannot even believe her baby could ever stand up, much less walk!
Hadley has been able to do things like dump stuff out of a bucket, take rings off a stacker, and take nesting cups out from inside each other for awhile now. All of a sudden she is starting to put stuff back in the bucket, try and put the rings back on the stacker(hard!) and places the cups back where they were nesting. You can tell she's really thinking.
We have been giving her these little puff treats(cheerio like) that melt in her mouth. Mostly we have had to feed them to her as she was not very good at grasping the little pieces. Starting this last Monday, she caught on to that as well. What used to be a very long, and frustrating ordeal to get her to grab ahold of one little puff, is now us trying to stop her from putting 10 in her mouth at once : ) She's got that pincer grasp down. This baby has never turned down food a single time since birth and so we do not anticipate that will be a huge issue with her. Even when she's not so hot on something and twists up her face, she keeps on eating it. Tasting bad isn't going to stop her from filling up!. We look forward to finding things to let her feed herself with. She thinks that is lots of fun.
We have her 9 month check up next week(at almost 10 months-bad Mommy!) and we'll find out how much she weighs and sadly get her a few more shots. One of the days I am going to have to get Daddy to take her to these appointments.
Hadley still doesn't like to be read to and insists on taking the book and looking through it herself. She loves to grab Daddy's glasses and thinks it's a hoot when I put mine on. She is trying to wave back at us now but she still turns her hand inwards and essentially waves at herself. She points to anything interesting she sees and so always has an "Onward!" look about her. Hadley now sits up in the grocery cart by herself when we go shopping. She loves to look around and 'talks' to everyone we pass in the store. She can stay busy for an hour if we give her a plastic water bottle to play with and she is crawling all over the place trying to escape us. We can go outside a lot more now that it is just in the 80's. Who knew October could be so pleasant?
Hadley is looking forward to a visit with Aunt Debbie and Uncle Rick soon and then not long after that sister Sarah and Nana and Pappaw will come for Thanksgiving. Before all that there will be Halloween. Daddy picked out a costume and we'll get those pictures up next weekend.
New trick!
Hadley went from laying down to sitting up all by herself tonight! It's always so funny when she does something for the first time. No warning--all of a sudden she's up..wow.
Not a tooth in her mouth yet.
Hadley likes us to stack up blocks of all kinds so she can knock them down. The higher they go the better. She still would rather grab the book out of our hands when we read to her, so she does a lot of looking at them all by herself.
It's cooler here. Everything is relative, of course. Over 90 most days, but that feels great next to how it's been. We cannot wait for November. It is a lot easier to take her outside to walk and run errands.
She turned 9 months old on the 2nd. It is hard to believe. She is a wonder.
New Camera
Our camera met an untimely death and stalled our picture taking for a time. We have solved that problem though and are back with more pictures of Miss Hadley.
She turned 8 months old on the 2nd of September. We cannot believe it. We are sad to report there are still no teeth. She did get sick though (right after Jeff and I did)and had to get some antibiotics. She seems to be on the mend but still tires out quicker than she used to.
We dodged hurricane Ike last weekend and are really thankful. We thought we would catch the edge of it at the least and are happy to report we missed it entirely.
Hadley recently got to visit with her Nana and Pappaw and sister Sarah on a trip to M'ville. She was happy to see them but was a little upset to be in such a new and unfamiliar place. We all survived though. I found that it is much easier to have Mom and Dad on the plane together when taking a baby. It made all the difference : )
I'll go post those pictures now..
Hadley tooth watch
Well,,,,no tooth yet . Nobody is more ready than Hadley though. She has been a sleep through the night wonder since almost the beginning and that is changing as she is in more pain. Good thing Mommy and Daddy are up already since they cannot stop watching the Olympics! On a fun note, she has been awake for a lot of big moments like Michael Phelps endless string of wins. When she is older we can tell her she got to stay up late and watch : )
Hadley loves magazines and catalogs, the remote control, our cell phones, wires, the laptop, our glasses, playing with balls, not going to bed, watching us eat dinner, sitting on her Daddy's lap and holding books by herself(does not like us to hold the book when we read to her). I am going to go out on a limb and say she likes swimming a whole lot. It may not be love yet but we are working on it.
Hadley does not like bedtime, being strapped into her high chair, being put to bed, being in the dark(I think), having her clothes put on or taken off, having pj's put on(signaling bedtime!), being forced to sit still(carseat, stroller,,,etc).
We are looking forward to fall as it should be just generally hot instead of furnace hot and we will be able to do more outside with the baby. It seems like the time just goes so fast. It's a good thing it just results in her getting sweeter and sweeter. We wake up each morning and wonder what new little thing she will amaze us with. We are looking ahead to our visit to VA over Labor Day. Hadley will be able to see sister Sarah, her Grandaprents and our friends in Martinsville. We are excited. Mommy is especially excited she will not have to fly alone this time!
That's all the news for now.
Burning up
It is really hard to have a baby in Texas in the middle of summer. I honestly get very freaked out after I put Hadley in her car seat because no matter how much air conditioning I blow she is still really hot. The seat being turned backwards means she gets less air. I try to make our trips short and early in the day. We try to go swimming as much as we can. She really seems to enjoy it. It's funny to go to the pool by myself. There is definitely a stay at home Mom thing at the pool. Hadley is a good ambassador and opens all the doors to my adult conversations. We go where it's cold~the Walmart, the HEB, the laundrymat. How about the mall you ask? Yeah, it's outside : ( Whose idea was that??
Hadley just loves balls. She has little tiny ones and ones that are bigger than her and she loves them all. She is also starting to interact with her stuffed animals in a much more familiar way. She spends longer babbling at them and does more hugging than she used to. She has started really playing with toys in the bathtub and spends a fair amount of time trying to untie things like the ties at the end of my pants, Jeff's shoes, bows on bears...that kind of stuff. Every day is some new little amazing thing for us to see.
Looks like we will take a trip to VA soon so all those people can see all her cuteness for themselves. Can't wait.
Scooting
Hadley began scooting Friday. It is a huge effort on her part but she gets where she is going. Truly, I am amazed at how each day we can see her realizing more and more that she has the power to go get what she wants and not wait on us to hand it to her. She is really wiggly and is now always rolling or scooting away. Goodness, she is cute. Floor time is filled with begging to chew on the remote, willing to try endlessly to see if just this once she will be allowed to roll all the way to the wires coming out of the wall, taking off her own diaper~ fun stuff like that! Hadley still laughs a lot more for Daddy than for Mommy but I think it must be the endless raspberries she receives. I tell joke after joke and ,,,nothing! I haven't been one for taking naps as she sleeps through the night and I haven't been very deprived(i give a sad face to all my Mommy friends who are not having this joy right now). This stage though may leave me needing some rest!
Hadley turned 7 months old on the 2nd. She is 17 lbs 9 oz at last weeks doctor visit and is 26 inches long. She got some shots which she of course did not enjoy at all. Everything looks great though. We are just taking our family time when we can get it and trying to get through the required stuff like work as fast as we can so we can get back to the fun part.
Monday
Hadley is missing her sister. Sarah finished up her visit to Texas on Saturday and flew back to VA. This is a real loss for Hadley. It is pretty nice thing to have someone around all day and all night who loves to do anything it takes to make you smile and laugh. Also, who would never never make you go to bed at 8:30pm like Mom and Dad. Hadley is finding solace in our screen saver which is a picture of her and RahRah. It was a fun, fun visit and we are sorry to see her go. It is a lot quieter and markedly less funny around here now!
On a logistical note, we have returned Hadley to her own room to sleep at night. She slept in our room while Sarah was here. This was not a problem until morning time. We had to set an alarm for Jeff and of course this would wake her up. We covered the outside of her bed with sheets so she would not be able to see anything. This made for some funny scenes. We would sneak around the bedroom in the morning trying to keep her from seeing us. She knew we were there but could not prove it! : ) She would just lay there saying "Mamagnagnanama". Even though she calls everything Mama..(usually not me), it was much harder to leave her in bed while she said that. We'd get her up and let her realize she was still tired and then try and put her back down when Jeff left for work. Now she can just sleep away as our alarm goes off. I miss hearing her cute talking in the morning though.
No crawling and no teeth. She is starting to realize she will have to do something with her legs to go forward without rolling but she hasn't really caught on to what that is. I give her another 2 weeks and she makes some kind of crawling gesture. She has a lot of things out of reach that she would like to get to and the frustration is building. We have her 6 month doctor appointment tomorrow and I will ask all my questions then. She will get her shots again which I hate. Daddy volunteered to come with but I can do it--I can do it!
Off to try and post the rest of the pictures from the visit. I cannot keep up. We went to Walmart of all places and had some pictures taken. We loved how they came out. They sell you the copyright release so if anybody wants copies go ahead and order them or we can make you a CD of them and send it. Just let us know.
Hadley is waiting on her tooth
We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of one of Hadley's top left teeth. It is very white and the skin is extremely tight. She is very upset and seems to be hurting quite a bit. We are trying to will the tooth to come now, so Sarah can see it before she leaves on Saturday. Hadley continues to practice her rolling and has gained speed and agility. You cannot take your eyes off her now. She'll be gone in a flash!! : ) She does not seem to understand that crawling might be an option and so she gets very frustrated when she cannot go that extra inch to get a toy that is out of reach. In place of this fix, she started doing something new this morning. She is rolling up on her belly and then turning or rotating herself on what appears to be her belly button. It's cute--looks little like a breakdancing move. It gives her some options for moving. Hadley has also taken to mimicking us. She watches very carefully and then gives what we are doing a try. Talking, laughing, playing with her tongue. She is endlessly fun to watch. She is bigger by the day. Mama cannot believe there will be a tooth soon. It seems so impossible.
Hadley is on a roll!
I had just about given up on my baby ever being mobile. I was picturing carrying her to her first day of school! So there we were on Friday, playing on the ground and it finally happened! The phone rang and I turned my back to her for a minute(the kid has never moved) and the next thing I know she is across the room gumming on the wires coming out of the wall! I could not have been more surprised. She would roll from front to back and from back to front but she would not go anywhere or "roll over". Now she is just mad that the room is so short. She keeps rolling into roadblocks or "us" blocks. It's amazing to see. She seems to know that things have changed because she just wants to go from wherever she is to somewhere new now. Sitting still has lost its allure : ) It's pretty funny how dangerous our apartment looks to me now. It's like one giant accident trap. I was eager for her to crawl. Now I am not so sure. She's pretty cute though. She looks around to make sure we are noticing her big accomplishments. There is much clapping around here lately.
Hadley had a bunch of new experiences this weekend. Mommy had a few too. We went to one of the town pools we hadn't visited yet on Friday. As we were walking in my arm suddenly felt like it was being stabbed. I was carrying the baby in the car seat and thankfully did not drop her or anything. I don't know if it was a wasp or hornet but something that can sting more than once was attacking my arm. We got away and Sarah watched Hadley while I went in search of ice or sympathy : ) I have never been stung by anything. So at the age of 32 I finally know why people dance a silly dance when bees start landing near them. It's funny to go from having no fear of something by virtue of being ignorant of what that thing is/does to having a new appreciation for not getting stung. I think we have decided this particular pool, fun as it was, sets their garbage and food out in places that might encourage stinging. Glad that is over!
We went out to a place called Volente Beach on Saturday. It is a private beach on Lake Travis that has a small beach, some pools and also some slides and water rides. I am glad we went because now we know what it is but I think we all agreed it's not somewhere we need to go back to. It was not set up to make things easy to do or worth the cost and effort to go. I knew it would be tricky with a baby but it really was not the place for such little ones. The only shaded places were reserved for groups and parties which made keeping her cool very stressful. She did fine but it was too hot not to have somewhere to hide out other than a restaurant. Jeff and Sarah went down some slides. Sarah went down one that I cannot imagine getting on. You shoot almost straight down an enclosed tube and get ejected out an opening to circle what looks me like a giant toilet bowl after which you are eventually flushed out a hole in the bottom into a pool of water underneath. We got enough of a rush just watching her ride it. We stayed for sunset and hung out at an outdoor bar/grill place on the property. That was the best part of the day in my book. It was not so hot,the crowds were gone and we could relax. Lake Travis is a great place with beautiful water but we will enjoy it somewhere else next time.
Sunday we went out to Zilker Park in downtown Austin to swim at Barton Springs. Fun! It is a famous city park that has a natural rock 'pool' that is fed by springs and it is COLD! I've never been as wide awake as I was after diving under this water. It is hot here though and once you get in it feels great. Hadley went in to a point but she complained loudly and so was mostly held above the water. The swimming area is about 3 acres in total and has a wide variety of depths. Sarah wore goggles and did some checking out of the underwater which we thought was brave. They put on a free musical at an outdoor theatre across from the springs almost every night of the summer. We went to that at sunset. It was Beauty and The Beast. Hadley was not very quiet so I had to walk her around the grass. The performance was really, really good and it was fun to see some live theatre. Hadley really liked it but that meant she was adding her own singing. She fell asleep eventually and we left at intermission. We hated to do it but it's hard to balance a baby's need to go home and go to bed with our need to stay up and have fun.
A fun weekend and Hadley is still asleep at 10am, so I guess she wore herself out. I did too, in a good way. We will regroup for another week of checking out Texas. We go to Houston and Galveston Island next weekend. We will keep our eyes open for Hadley's next trick : )
What my baby will sleep through
It seems that Hadley's reaction to stress is to fall asleep. So far, I should add. She slept during take off and landing both ways on the trip to Chicago,,and now,,she sleeps through fireworks. She spent the first part of the show wide eyed and hanging on to Daddy and by the time the grand finale came she was sound asleep. I have a picture to prove it, you doubters!!
We had a nice holiday here in TX. The town had a bunch of fun things to take in at the local park. We saw Ballet Folklorico dancers and a local Texas bad guy(from long ago!) shoot out drama (Hadley also sailed through that loud event).
We got to the pool long enough for Jeff and Sarah to take a ride on the water slide. They have an uncovered and a covered one. The covered one is so much more scary and so much more fast. I should have believed all the 7 year olds who warned me as I made my way up the stairs to take my turn earlier this week. Since I had already taken my turn believing I might drown, I passed on the chance to go again tonight. I call this Dad's department. I must confess that the uncovered slide, which Sarah reports is slow and not very fun is not the same for Jeff and I. I guess we weigh more than she does! We help gravity out a little more-Ha. That'll be more than enough excitement for me. Hadley is always enthusiastic and surprised when people just magically appear--like at the end of a water slide or after the have gone underwater and pop back up. She is loving the water now, which we are thrilled about. I am always so sad when I hear of people who are scared of the water or do not swim for any reason. I enjoy the water so much and hope she will too.
We are off to San Antonio for the rest of the weekend. A cousin of mine is coming with her kids to meet up with her husband. He is a Chicago cop and is down there training a special dog for police work. He's gone from them all summer, so they will come to him. One of my sisters(my Dad has three girls from his first marriage) and her husband will also be joining us. We are really excited for Hadley to meet more family. We never thought we would have an easy way to get her connected with people in Texas anytime soon. So, if we had to come here this is a nice plus. My cousin's daughter is the same age as Sarah and they will hopefully enjoy having someone to be with other than all of us nerdy adults.
Oh yes, and for those who don't know what they are looking at in last weeks photos: That would be Jeff taking Sarah out for her first drive using her newly acquired permit. We all went. Funny stuff. We lived : )
Happy 4th of July to all.
Let's Try This Again..
It is shaming to be married to a computer programmer and to be so awful at things on the computer. I have begun this journal and somehow deleted it twice. I have asked for help though,,and am confident I can succeed. I was saying that Jeff was on his way to meet Sarah(visiting for a month) in Raleigh the other day when I lost my work. He got there with no trouble and they returned just fine. Hadley knew something suspicious was happening as she was up way past her bedtime waiting on them to come from the airport. Regrettably, this also means she was falling apart by the time her sister walked in the door. A bottle and some raspberries later she was truly delighted to be back on the lap of her favorite playmate. She's been planted there ever since.
Sarah has the patience of a dog trainer with the baby and so she has already convinced Hadley to try more than she is ever willing to try for us. She hates being on her tummy for example, but for Sarah, down she goes : ) We expect her to be walking and talking by the time Sarah is done with her!
We went to a church in downtown Austin yesterday that had the most amazing worship leader I have ever heard. The church is called Austin City Life and it is a newly planted church in the Acts 29 network. Jeff and I attended Mars Hill in Seattle which is also an Acts 29 church and has now sponsored the planting of this urban church. They meet in a small theatre in downtown Austin. It's this great, funky space that has an independent coffee shop up front. So we dosed up on lattes and mochas and went in. It was fun to be able to talk to them about our connection to the church in Seattle that has sponsored their "launch". I would say 30 people were there. It is a young crowd and thankfully they tolerated Hadley's eventual meltdown well. Who knew I'd be screening churches on their reactions to babies screaming at the top of their lungs?
Hadley does really well but now that she is babbling she is getting to be more of a spontaneous pastor interrupter. When she gets too excitable we give her the bottle we brought but that is always the beginning of the end. Hadley cries like something is biting her whenever she gets to the end of a bottle--no matter how full she is. Luckily she is usually on Daddy's lap Sunday mornings and he gets the honor of fleeing the room with her. I will try my best to see if there are any clips of this worship leader I can post. The pastor commented that it was intoxicating. We cannot disagree. It surely helps to have a pool of musical talent that is living in the "Live Music Capitol". The small space contributed to the effect as well. We were blessed to go and hope to return. We enjoyed it and love the chance to hang out in the city.
Hadley is taking naps now(finally!)which is why I can attempt to start this journal. She didn't nap at all from birth until we came to Texas. I think the alternating heat and air conditioning combo knocks her out. I am a grateful Mommy.
