Year 1 Latest News

The Great Kapok Tree and more...

This week the children will be learning more about the animals of the rainforest through the story of The Great Kapok Tree.

In Numeracy children will continue to learn more about the properties of 2d and 3d shapes.

Tropical Butterfly House

Year 1 had a fantastic trip today to the Tropical Butterfly House. 
We were able to hold and stroke an owl, a guinea pig, a tiny chick, a tortoise, a snake, a giant millipede and a large cockroach!
We also saw lots of beautiful butterflies and moths, two big iguanas, cute meerkats, cheeky chipmunks, colourful parrots, fabulous peacock displaying his feathers and so much more.
We even found time for a run about the new adventure playground.

What an amazing adventure!

Wide Awake Club returns to Year 1

Some children have recieved invitiations to the early morning Wide Awake Club this week. If your child has received a letter, could you please return your reply slips asap. The club starts next Tuesday. It will run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until the summer, starting at 8:10am

 

If you would also like your child to have breakfast at school please see the office beforehand.

Year 1 visit to the Butterfly House

Year 1 are going on an exciting visit to the Tropical Butterfly House on Thursday.
Please make sure your reply slips are returned asap. All permission slips are needed before we go.

Handa's Surprise

This week we are learning the story of Handa's Surprise.

Goodbye Miss Parker!

Goodbye Andrew!

Today we saw goodbye to Andrew. Andrew has been helping out in class 4 this term. We liked to say a big thank you!

Sharing Assemblies

Well done to all of the Year 1 classes - great assemblies this week!

Sport's Relief - Speedball Competition

Today we had a Sport's Relief competition. We had to kick the ball as fast as we could into the goal. Our fastest speeds were recorded.

Monkey See Monkey Do

This week we will continue to learn a Pie Corbett version of the story "Monkey See Monkey Do" using both words and actions. 

World Book Day - Where's Wally?

Next Thursday is this year's World Book Day. 
As a school we shall celebrate on Friday, with a dress up day. Our topic this term is called Where's Wally, and looks at our local area.

Where possible we would love to encourage year 1 children to come to school, on Friday, dressed as a Where's Wally character. Even the teaching staff are hoping to join in!

Pie Corbett Story Telling

Today all classes have been sharing their story telling skills with the rest of the school. Year 1 children retold the story of Rapunzel, accompanying their words with special story signs.
These have all been videoed and we hope to have them uploaded onto the website as soon as possible.

Back to school

We hope that you have all enjoyed a fun and relaxing half term break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in the morning.

This half term Year 1 will be learning about the area around them, the shops, services, places and people of Hunters Bar.

Half term is now upon us. We hope that you all have am enjoyable break and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday 20th February. 

Next half term we will be learning about our local area. 

Warning: Icy playground

When the weather is very cold and frosty the safety surface in the playground underneath the climbing frame can become very slippy and dangerous for the children to play on.

At play times teachers on duty will let children know when it is not safe to play on. 

Can parents please be aware before and after school? If it is frosty/icy please don't let your children play in this area. Thank you. 

Medieval Banquet

On Wednesday 8th February year 1 will be holding a medieval banquet as part of this term's castle topic. Children may choose to come to school in appropriate fancy dress/clothes if they wish. 

There are sign up sheets in each classroom, with suggestions for appropriate food/drink to bring in. If you can help by bringing in such items please sign up next week. 

Whole School Target

Our current whole school target is to "follow the assembly rules". This means:

* Good Looking
* Good Listening
* Good Sitting

Recount...

This week we are learning to give a recount, using time connectives such as First, Then, Next, After and Finally. We will be giving a recount of how to make lavender bags.

Trout Watch

Time for a very important job this week. The water need to be changed and treated with special chemicals in our new trout tank. The tank remains covered over at the moment but we hope to remove the cover next week. Out of 100 eggs, we have 91 babies in the tank!

As they arrive we will update each class page with photographs from the castle trips.

Castle trips - Packed lunches needed

Just a quick reminder.

Classes 5 and 6 go to Manor Castle tomorrow, class 4 on Friday.

 

Children will need a packed lunch for their trip, plus suitable clothing for a cold and possibly wet day outside,

NSPCC Sponsorship

Following an assembly yesterday all pupils have brought home a leaflet and sponsorship form for "Buddy's Workout." Pupils will take part in a special workout activity in school. You can help to support the NSPCC charity by sponsoring your child. All sponsorship forms and collect money needs to be return to school by 2nd February.

New Trout fish tank

You may have noticed a new addition to the school main entrance. We now have a new fish tank. Currently it is shrouded in darkness whilst the trout eggs hatch. Lila (class 8) and Mrs Carr had a sneaky peek and have discovered that already some eggs have hatched! Hopefully the dark covering can be removed later next week. Do come and have a look for yourself. 

Castle Trips next week!

Each year 1 class will be going to visit Manor Castle during school time next week. Letters have already been sent home with further details. Please can you return the completed reply/permission slips as soon as possible?

Goodbye Sian

We would like to wish Miss Kelly goodbye and good luck in her exciting adventure in Australia. Sian has worked as a learning support assistant throughout the school and especially in classes 5 and 6 for a while now. However, she is now leaving for warmer climates as she jets off to Australia for an extended visit, before beginning her teacher training in September.

We will all miss you!

Castle building

This week we begin to learn the story of Rapunzel. We will learn to recite the story and learn actions for key words in the story. 

Castles and Rapunzel

This half term year 1 will be learning about castles. They will be looking at the different parts of a castle, how castles were made, and who lived  in a castle.

As part of the topic we will be learning to retell the story of Rapunzel.

It's Christmas!!!

Well, school is now finished for 2011 and the chldren have two weeks to have fun, relax and refresh themselves.

We hope all of you have a fantastic break, and that all of those celebrating Christmas have a wonderful day.

Goodbye and Good Luck!

Today we have said goodbye to Mrs Hall, who is the current class 7 teacher. Mrs Hall is leaving school to enjoy some quieter days for a while. Mrs Hall has been at HBIS for 9 years and over the years has worked in every year group, and nearly every classroom!

 

We will miss her, but wish Mrs Hall all the best for the future.

A very special visitor came to school

It was such an exciting morning today! Father Christmas came to school!!!

 

He brought us some presents for our classrooms and we sang him some songs from our Nativity play. It was a fantastic surprise!

Goodbye to Miss Mikells and Miss Evans

Miss Mikells and Miss Evans set off to the airport for their return to America today. We wish them all a safe journey and hope they will keep in contact once they are back home.

A Fairytale Nativity

Today was our Chrismas show. The children performed at the Citadel in front of all their grown ups.  Every child in year 1 had a part in this very special version of the Nativity story. And each and every child did fantastically well. We were really pleased and proud of how well they all did!

Week beg: 5th December

This week is a busy one as we do our final rehearsals before Thursday's nativity play at the Citadel. We do hope you can all join us at 10 o'clock on Thursday. You are in for a treat - the year 1 children have done so well with learning their lines and practising their songs.

Parental Help needed

Christmas workshop: Friday 2nd December is our Christmas craft workshop. If any parents can help out in class please sign up this week.

 

Walk to Citadel:

Monday 5th: Can you help walk the children to or from the Citadel on the afternoon of our nativity practise? If so, please sign up in class this week.

Thursday 8th: Can you help walk the children to or from the Citadel on the morning of our nativity show? If so, please sign up in class this week.

 

Christmas party: Each class is having a Christmas party on Thursday 15th December. There is a signing up sheet in each class where you can indiciate what food/drink/other items you could bring.

Christmas Play - Costumes needed

All Year 1 children have been sent home with a letter this weekend. The letter tells you what part your child has been given in the play and what clothes/costume they will need.

 

We ask for all costumes to be brought into school for Monday 5th December.

Please ensure your costumes are labelled with your child's name.

 

If you are unsure what you will need, or you are having any difficulties finding a suitable outfit,  please see your child's class teacher or teaching assistant as soon as possible.

Switch Off Fortnight

We are now starting week two of Switch Off Fortnight. The Eco Team will be looking for people in school who are doing their very best to save energy around school.

Competition Time

As part of Switch Off Fortnight we have two competitions running in school. Please place your entries in the boxes near the main entrance. Don't forget to write you name and class on your entry.

 

1. Eco Pledge - do you have any ideas on how you could save energy? Write your promise or pledge on the lightbulb entry form for your chance to win a special Eco pencil.

 

2. Switch Off badges - can you design a badge or sticker to remind people about Switch Off Fortnight? Draw you ideas on a small piece of paper for your chance to win a special Eco pencil and see your ideas made into real badges and stickers.

Goodbye and thank you!

Year 1 would like to say a big thank you to Sheila, our school cook. Sheila will be retiring tomorrow after more than 30 years preparing meals for the infant and junior schools.

Well done to the children of class 4. They had their showing assembly this week and everyone really enjoyed their sings and story telling. Fantastic!

Welcome to Miss Mikell and Miss Evans

Year 1 welcomes two new classroom helpers for the next few weeks. Miss Mikell and Miss Evans are here all the way from Georgia, USA! They are going to take some lessons and tell us all about America, and we might even be able to speak to some of the children they work with in America soon.

Children in Need

Well done to Year 1. You have helped the school raise lots of money for Children in Need. We loved all your costumes!

Well done to Classes 5 and 6

Both class 5 and class 6 have had their showing assemblies for their parents and grown upsthis week, and they all did fabulous!

 

Class 5 told us all about weather, the water cycles and even gave us this week's weather forecasts! They finished with a great rendition of Fireworks.

 

Class 6 told us all about their dinosaur adventure, how dinosaurs move, and showed us the dinosaur work they had been doing in class. They finished with their version of "We're going on a dino hunt."

 

We are looking forward to class 4's assembly next week.

Friday 18th November: Children in Need

On Friday children can come to school in Fancy Dress to support Children in Need.

Children are asked to donate £1 for the charity.

Class Assemblies

A quick reminder that the year 1 classes will hold their class assemblies over the coming days. You are all very welcome to come and watch. The assemblies will take place at 9:15am and will last approximately 15 inutes.

Fireworks

Welcome back!

We hope you have all had a lovely relaxing half term holiday. It is now time to return to school, refreshed and ready to learn again after our break.

 

This week we are learning about Little Red Riding Hood.

October Half Term

School will now be closed for a week. We return back to school, nicely refreshed, on Monday 31st October.

Harvest Assembly

This morning HBIS held a harvest assembly.

 

We would like to say a big thank you to the Gardening and Nature Club for their wonderful fruit and vegetable display, all grown at HBI school!

 

We would also like to say thank you to all the children who helped to raise almost £500 for LEPRA. This donation will help to cure and save 25 children suffering from leprosy.

 

And well done to Year 1 children who led the singing of our harvest song "Cauliflowers fluffy..."

Top Award for HBIS!

On Monday evening Mrs Carr and Mrs Murphy were invited to a special reception for the Telegraph Environmental Awards ceremony. The judges were so impressed by HBIS's environmental work in school they awarded us the top prize! We beat all of the other schools in Sheffield.

Well done everybody!

Creative Curriculum: Children's Choice

Next week is our first Creative Curriculum week. The children in each class have chosen their favourite topic to learn more about.

 

Class 4 will be learning all about space.

Class 5 will be learning all about the weather.

Class 6 will be learning all about dinosaurs.

TALK HOMEWORK - Launched today

Today our first talk homework was launched in assembly.

Each week the children will be given a talk homework topic. They will bring it home on a sheet of paper.

Try and find time with your child this coming week to discuss the topic given/

 

Remember:

STOP: find a good, quiet time to talk together without any distractions

THINK: make time to think about your ideas before talking

TALK: look at your partner, tell them what you think

LISTEN: listen to each other, don't interrupt, look at each other

RESPOND: ask questions, say what you think

 

and HAVE FUN!

Week beg: 10th October

It is our final week of "Under the Sea" and we will be learning the story of The Rainbow Fish.

We will be reading the story, retelling the story through drama and writing, and enjoying a range of classroom activities based on our theme.

Children's Choice Creative Curriuclum Week

Your children have been sent home with a letter about the final week of term. It is one of our Creative Curriculum weeks where the whole week will be themed around one topic. This time each class will chose their own topic. Children need to write down a suggestion for the theme and bring it back to school. The class teacher will then collate the forms an select the top three ideas. The class will then vote on their favourite topic.

 

Please return your forms asap.

Week beg: October 3rd

This week we will continue with our Under The Sea topic, and we will be retelling the story "The Fish Who Could Wish" with children thinking up their own wishes. What would your fish wish for?

 

September 30th: Curriculum Evening Feedback

Week beg: 26th September

This week we are beginning our Creative Curriculum topic "Under The Sea."  Our classrooms now have many Under The Sea activities to engage the children in their topic.

Our first story is The Fish Who Could Wish by John Bush and Korky Paul. The children will read the story, learn Pie Corbett actions when recalling the story and write their own version of the story.

Don't forget to look at our Learning page on this website for topic vocabulary which your children will be learning and using during the next three weeks.

This week year 1 are continuing to learn about their senses.

 

We are using poems, stories and describing words to talk about what we can see, hear, taste, touch and hear.

Caryl Hart

An author called Caryl Hart came to visit the children on Thursday. She read some of her very funny stories. Find out more about what we liked best on our class pages.

This week year 1 are learning all about their senses: touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell.

About Me bags

During this week all year 1 children will bring home a paper bag. They should put three small things into their bag that tells the other children and teachers all about themselves. They should then bring their bags back to school and hand it in to their class teacer.

Back to school

It's that time of year again! We hope you have all had a lovely summer break and that you are enjoying your last few days before term starts next week. The staff are all back in school now getting classrooms and resources prepared for the new classes. The year 1 classrooms are all looking very exciting right now! We can't wait to meet you all on Monday.

It's our final week before the summer!

 

We have all worked really hard this year and met all of our class targets. Tomorrow we get a cinema treat day and can chose from three films. We are very excited.
