Why A Wellness Policy

Just a clarification on the goal of the Wellness Policy.  This policy's purpose is to give governance to all foods and beverages consumed in our school and to create a healthy environment to promote healthy lifestyles in our children.  The order for compliance for this policy is governed by the USDA.  The USDA writes the nutritional guidelines for the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program for all public schools and those private schools who want to participate.  That means that these programs already have governance.  The Wellness Policy is primarily for all the other foods consumed and sold at or by our school. In addition to what kids eat, the USDA insists we take a closer look at the opportunities for physical activity during and after school, and teach the children and their families about healthy lifestyles.  The DPI will inspect the Wellness Policy of each school when it inspects the School Meals programs.

A wellness policy for Assumption BVM School is under construction.  Meanwhile, browse our website for helpful information for your own health and your family.

Wellness Policy Requirements

Here's an article written by Dr. David A. Kessler about the need to find our way back to Healthy Eating at home and in schools.

Wellness Committee Meeting

The Wellness Committee met on March 23 at 4:00pm.  We used this time to "work" on our assigned goals for the final Wellness Policy.  Each committee member will be writing their version of what they would like to see as our policy in the following areas :  Physical Education and Physical Activity during school,  Nutrition, Science & Health Education upgrades to curriculum, School Nurse wellness initiatives, Extra Curricular physical activity, fundraising, concessions, treats brought to school, school sponsored treats, staff education, parent education, supportive services, nutritional guidelines for foods outside of NSLP & SBP, and enhancements to NSLP & SBP.  The team will be utilizing the surveys to help them write policy requirements.  In addition, they will be writing handbook information for staff, students and parents.  Our next meeting is scheduled for April 20 at 4:00pm

Wellness Committee Meeting

The Wellness Committee met on Tuesday, February 16 at 4:00pm at Assumption BVM School.  The surveys were collected from students, parents, and staff.  They will be compiled and presented at the next meeting on March 23.  We discussed the policies and requirements of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Programs (SBP).

Thoughts of serving organic foods were a topic of interest.  A sample menu wil be presented at our next meeting to see what it would look like and the cost involved in providing such meals.

The current grade curriculums in regards to health and wellness will be posted on the website soon as the committee compiles an easy to reference report.

Current Policies that will be affected by the Wellness Policy include fundraising, student handbook, and the Diocesan Wellness Policy.  The committee was reminded of the purpose of the Wellness Policy is to provide governance to all foods brought in or provided to students.  Refer to the link above this section to learn more. Subjects it must include are nutrition education, physical activity, other school based activities, and nutrition guidelines for foods served outside of the NSLP and SBP.  It may also include policies concerning foods served in the lunch and snack programs as long as they are not less restrictive than the current National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

Wellness Fair

A school wide "Wellness Fair" will be held the morning of February 25.  Come join us for morning mass, snack and the "Wellness Fair".  Each grade will present what it takes to make ourselves healthy.  Food, Exercise, and more.  Be sure to pick up your free copy of "Eating & Exercising for Good Health Handbook" from one of our Wellness Committee members.

Wellness Task Force Committee

The Wellness Task Force Committee met on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.  Each group reported their findings. The Curriculum group reported on the current standards and benchmarks for each grade regarding food, exercise and health in general.  Some extra curricular after school activities are planned and a schedule will be sent home in this week's brown envelope.  The Wellness website has been adding information on community resources as it comes in from the committee.  A mock wellness policy was written and will be reviewed at later meetings after more investigations are done. Surveys are in the final touch up stages and are planned to go out in the January 27 Brown Envelope for parents.  The student and staff surveys will be done in school.  For our next meeting, the curriculum group will post their findings on the Wellness website, the community group will continue their search for area resources.  The policy team will look into existing school policies that will be affected by the Wellness Policy. The survey team will analyze the surveys and report to the committee their findings.  We also discussed the question of screening any business advertisements that we post on our site.  It was decided that any controversial ads(to the Catholic belief) will not be posted.  The students are putting on a Health & Wellness Fair on Thursday, February 25.  The committee was informed of each grades focus.  The Wellness Committee members will be handing out a pamphlet for adults about food & exercise basics at this fair.  Our next meeting is scheduled for February 16 at 4:00pm

Wellness Task Force Committee

Our first meeting of the Wellness Task Force met on Tuesday, October 27.  Our first order of business is to investigate what we currently do at Assumption BVM School and available resources in our community.  We will meet again in January to discuss our findings and determine our next step.
