Words of Support Comfort Don Bischoff During Cancer Treatments
Over the couse of the last week, many from the running community have written to Don offering words of support and encouragement. Following are a few emails Don received that he wanted to share with the group.

Well that was an email. A brave face to a difficult time. I'm sending you all the chi in the universe that I can muster and hope you know that everyone is doing the same, whether it's a thought, a prayer, energy or meditation. May your medicine be strong and your beer cool and refreshing. Tara

I do not know you very well. However, I appreciate you sending this email. We will all pray for your recovery. As runners, we often get greedy and obsess over faster, longer, stronger, etc. We need emails like this every once in a while to remind us to just enjoy the fact that we can run. Slow or fast, good run or bad run, a run is always better than no run. In addition, there are many naysayers out there about how running is hard on your body. It is good to hear it has helped you to be as strong as you are.
Hang in there and know everyone is thinking about you! Amber
Thanks for your email and please know that my thoughts are with you and your family. I take your words to heart and will remind myself to not complain on days that I feel I "have" to get a run in, but rather remember how lucky I am to be "able and allowed" to get a run in. You are right, we all have a finite amount of runs alloted to us, and it's important to never take that for granted. Thanks for reminding me of this and I will work on passing this truth on to the younger runners I work with. You are in my prayers... Bill

Wow…..what a difference a “diagnosis” can make on every moment of the day to day. I salute your courage and attitude and will have you in my thoughts every day. As a nurse, I work with many challenging situations. But the number one difference between those that succeed in living life most fully and completely are those persons who can face each day focusing on the power of a positive attitude.
No doubt you and your family have a major adjustment, but you have an edge on so many ….you know what it takes to dig deep, push and focus on a goal. It is no wonder that so many athletes beat the odds….they have a unique approach and more experience in working with adversity and focusing on doing their best. Every day for everyone of us is a gift. Some realize that more than others. May today be wonderful for you J Rachel
Don - I am so sorry to hear about this and I want you to know you will be in my prayers. We just never know when life is going to throw us a curve ball and it is a good reminder to be thankful for what we have. I feel very fortunate to have met you through runnng and wish you the very best.

I am so very sorry to hear of your cancer. Please know that, from the first moment I met you, I have been impressed with what a good person you are. You have been generous and friendly to me from the day when you introduced yourself to me at a cross country race. Consistent kindness is a huge human achievement, in my opinion. Nothing is more important. You have achieved this.
With your high level of fitness, you are an ideal candidate to react well to your treatment. I will be sending positive thoughts your way! Jonathan

Prayers to you. Thank goodness you know your body enough to have gotten help soon. My friend had that same pain, did not do the right things, and by the time she did get diagnosed, it was too late for her. Good luck as you go through this process. Rebecca

Don I am so sorry to hear this. Remain strong and positive with faith in God. We are all runners now and forever. With one exception, the forever is with a perfect immortal body. Think about running on those wheels. You will be running with each of us every stride in our thoughts and prayers. George
I’m am so very sorry to hear this news. I have never met you before but to hear this news is so heart breaking. Yes, thank God for wonderful healthcare and support families and the vig group. Take care and I will put you in my prayers.

I'm very sorry to hear of your diagnosis and hope your treatments go well and they can get the cancer into remission in short order. I thought about what you said this morning and got my rear out the door to run while the sun rose. I hope they let you ride a bike so you can enjoy this spring. Michele, Biking is out but swimming is a good possibility. My Dr says that I could be running again in one or two years, just depends on how I respond to treatment...
That is what I understand and that is good news! Once you get it into remission evidently your bone can begin to remodel and strengthen. Are they going to do any radiation or do you know yet? With a pathologist husband I probably end up knowing more than one would expect. He sees multiple myeloma not infrequently and said that the chemo has really advanced. He also teaches me a lot. ;)

I was so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. You just never think that some nagging muscular-type problem would be cancer. I'm glad you shared the news with the group; a supportive community can be so helpful.

My wife had cancer when she was 33 (surgery, chemo and radiation), and she's still doing great, 10 years later. So hang in there and run vicariously through us until you're better! I did have a thought when I saw an e-mail from someone on the listserve a few days ago about raising some money through our vig running. When Julie was having chemo, lots of people asked if they could help and do benefits for us, but thank God we had great health care at the time and were totally covered. So we identified one cancer research/support chairity to which all donation and benefit money could go in Julie's honor. Anyway, I would love to participate if the vig club got involved in "running cancer into the ground," but wondered which approach you'd prefer - personal support or support for a cancer charity in your name?Kyle
No clue what our cost will be at this point but the best organization is the International Myeloma Foundation Don

I've asked a few folks to take a lap for me, and they said they would.... is that what you mean? I've often thought of a 5-6K run up through my neighborhood as a Tuesday workout, it even goes by St Pete's where I'll be recieving treatment...hmmmm Don
I really liked the idea of "Running for a Runner". So please seriously consider taking us up on this, as I know everyone of us would be more than happy to help out a fellow runner. Knowing that we could help out in some way would mean alot. Just think about it and know we are thinking of you! Deb

To the club,
After four months of nagging pain in the lower back a CT scan has shown that I have somewhat advanced bone marrow cancer (multiple myeloma). My left pelvis bone is very thin and my right hip is also disintegrating badly. If I didn't have a runners bulid I wouldn't be able to stand! I am not allow to engaging in running, skiing or anything else that could result in a fall. The reason I'm telling you all this is to let you know that I miss the weekly workouts and will try to just show up a few times to see you all in action. I want to thank the VTTC for helping me get to the best I could be .. a 5:45 mile for a 53 yr old made me smile. I hit the wall badly last November at the MT cup (112th I think) but this was at the beginning of the cancer.
Finally, I just want you all to very much enjoy every day you can get up and do a run. To have that taken away is very difficult for me to accept but life goes on and thank God for modern medicine and good health care.

Just wanted to thank you all again for the thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement that you have sent my way...IT HELPS!
Especially those of you that don't know me all that well. I'll keep you posted with an update now and then, I start chemo this week.
