Canyon Entrance to Cerro Gordo Ghost Town
A very steep and sometimes narrow trail up to Cerro Gordo. The climb is so severe that many vehicles attempting it overheat, damage their brakes or transmissions. there is no breeze through the canyon sections which creates up to 20 to 25 degree temp. changes. accompany this with the steep climb and you have trouble! if you don't watch your cars warning guages.. I had to stop half way up as I climbed out of the canyon and face my SUV in to the wind with the hood up to cool it down! not a good place for a break down...
Tram Landing from Cerro Gordo Ghost Town
In the 1800's the ore was transported down the mountain by arial tram where it was shipped off to other locations for assay. this tram landing is located half way down the mountain from the ghost town.

on the second day Kerry guided us to our first stop; a secret spring in Long Valley. Here we explored what appeared to be a former indian camp or ranch site.

from the trail the secret spring looks like nothing more than a clearing in the brush. as one explores the location it becomes evident that there are additional levels beyond the sage brush as well as running water.

This one was clustered with several others. the area dates back to the late 1800's to early 1900's. We found several square nails and broken glass bottles. Makala also found a glass bottle topper and cigerette tin!

Most of this country contained active mines at some point in time; unlike sites closer to larger pockets of population many of the sites here still posess remains and or debris that tell a story.

Diane negotiates a climb , pitch and drop
as we departed Marietta ghost town site we took a cut through a wash to Rattlesnake Canyon. very scenic, and wonderful smooth terrain. But it had a couple of rough spots. this climb was actually a sissy trail around a dry falls that would have placed all the machines on one rear tire to climb. 30 miles walk back to camp... No thanks, I will take the sissy trail!
bouncing through the rocky desert requires adjustments
We had spent all afternoon bouncing over all different types of terrain. every now and then we needed to stop, grab a bite to eat, and adjust our packs.
I never get tired of the sunsets or sunrise in the Nevada Desert.
worth working up early every morning are the sunrises in the Nevada Desert. and sitting back smoking a cigar while the sun drops is another favorite of mine.

We actually found the Miners Cabin while scoutting out over a ridge. Once we located it we had to explore it!

As we entered from the north, we began to see unusual rock formations.
The area was full of formations

While overlooking Last Chance Canyon we could see Bickel Camp off in the distance.

Bickel was an early 1900's mining camp occupied by a small group. In its later years it was occupied by Bickel alone.

We parked and took a tour
The caretakers at Bickel Camp provided us a tour and history of the camp.

Ace of Spades Cabin
the area was loaded with BLM adopt a cabin locations. Meaning, use them but dont abuse them. all were historic.
Burro Schmidts Camp
Occupying these desert lands was another character; Burro Schmidt who made a name for himself by burrowing a tunnel.

Living on a mountain side high above Bickel, he had a nice view of Last Chance Canyon.

As we investigated we discovered the mine was actually quite deep.
Military Hideaway
we are unsure what this really is, but I am told that the military dropped a bomb near here in the 50's. Shelter?
Trailer
This trailer is located at a cow camp at Wrightman Well. Probably once the caretakers residence.

This windmill is also located at wrightman Well and pumped the well water. now it just clatters in the wind.
