A Very popular off road trail among visitors to Death Valley. The trail is a one way path back in to the valley from its Eastern Border.
Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon
South and West of Death Valley is Red Rock Canyon. Those Traveling up from Southern California pass through here but seldom search out the dirt roads off the highway to see what is hidden...

Canyon Entrance to Cerro Gordo Ghost Town
Canyon Entrance to Cerro Gordo Ghost Town

A very steep and sometimes narrow trail up to Cerro Gordo. The climb is so severe that many vehicles attempting it overheat, damage their brakes or transmissions. there is no breeze through the canyon sections which creates up to 20 to 25 degree temp. changes. accompany this with the steep climb and you have trouble!  if you don't watch your cars warning guages..  I had to stop half way up as I climbed out of the canyon and face my SUV in to the wind with the hood up to cool it down!  not a good place for a break down...

Tram Landing from Cerro Gordo Ghost Town
Tram Landing from Cerro Gordo Ghost Town

In the 1800's the ore was transported down the mountain by arial tram where it was shipped off to other locations for assay. this tram landing is located half way down the mountain from the ghost town.

traversing jump falls near Briggs Cabins. I'm told that this trip trip through was much easier because somone took time to stack rocks in the ruts that ususally cause tipping and the possibility of rolling off the cliff.

as we explored the secret spring it became relevant that we needed to arrange a camping trip and set up here as a base camp!

from the trail the secret spring looks like nothing more than a clearing in the brush. as one explores the location it becomes evident that there are additional levels beyond the sage brush as well as running water.

Most of this country contained active mines at some point in time; unlike sites closer to larger pockets of population many of the sites here still posess remains and or debris that tell a story.

Here I stand in the middle of the freaken desert; an icon of history how prospectors turned our ancestors loose when the ore played out...  and all you got to offer is a damn granola bar?.. Next customer please pull through.

Diane negotiates a climb , pitch and drop
as we departed Marietta ghost town site we took a cut through a wash to Rattlesnake Canyon. very scenic, and wonderful smooth terrain. But it had a couple of rough spots. this climb was actually a sissy trail around a dry falls that would have placed all the machines on one rear tire to climb. 30 miles walk back to camp... No thanks, I will take the sissy trail!

From our base camp in Virginia City we took a short day trip down to American City. Unfortunately the ride back was in a snow storm, so we rode the last few miles on public highway. We thought we got away with it until the sheriff pulled up behind us at the Motel!  Busted!

Who We Are...

From 2006 till 2010 we were a group of families & friends who shared an interest in exploring our nations past by off road vehicles. We camped in the peace of the great out doors, photographing and exploring historic locations that were not easily reached or visited..

Family problems forced me to take a break from our adventures, But I am back now, alone.. but more excited than ever to continue on with the explorations, and for a new start in life!

Poem - Prisoner & The Drifter

There is a story worth telling
If one is quiet to hear
A story of a prisoner
And a drifter who frequents here

You see all these years that I’ve been now
Once a charming wife
Victimized by greed and violence
I lost my youthful life

Placed upon a mountain side
High up on a peak
Is my view forever
This prison that I speak

Time slowly passing
Each day glaring below
Nothing new to see
No where I can go

Then came a time
A time not to long ago
A time when I first saw him
This drifter I did not know

From this mountain where I lay
I see his travels below
Not many another pass through here
Not for a hundred years or so

Dust rise on the horizon
From trails around the bend
My drifter is about
The desert once again

His wheeled horse is dark
Hear its deep deep roar
Something I’ve never seen
Racing upon the baron floor

Covered in dust he pushes on through
To places most won’t go
Searching…Searching for times
Times I used to know

From site to site he travels
Inspecting what’s tattered and old
Searching for things forgotten
From a time when there was gold

Soon snow will cover the mountains
And cold will fill the air
My drifter disappears
Until sometime next year

Every day I wait for him
Wait for his return
Hoping he will find me
And my life he will learn

Until this time I can not pass
My story being untold
Release me from captivity
My drifter I’ll never know…

Traversing Garfield Flats in the dark
making a 75 mile round trip near the Excelsior Mountains in the Nevada Desert; we had a couple of delay's that forced us to travel the last 10 or so miles in the dark. Earlier that day we got caught in a series of thunder and lightning storms that forced us to take cover in some old shacks at the Silver Dyke Mining Camp.We also underestimated the time required to explore the amount of sites that we were anticipating to visit. This video is a short clip of those last 10 miles as the sun dropped below the mountains leaving us in the quiet night... just us and our machines!

Canyon Through Excelsior Mountains Nevada
after exploring some abandoned mining camps and mines on the south side of the Excelsior Mountains we decided to make the 30 mile trek back to base camp through a dried wash that cut through the mountains. It was a gamble with time, and we were hoping to make it back by dark. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Instead we arrive back after 9pm riding the last 10 miles in darkness with one crippled atv. This video clip was taken as we cut through the dried canyon wash. the trip through the wash itself actually took a little over an hour.
