IMPORTANT CONCUSSION INFORMATION BELOW!!!

PARENTS AND ATHLETES,

PLEASE OPEN AND DOWNLOAD THE FILES BELOW.  THIS YEAR, NEW YORK STATE HAS ADOPTED SPECIFIC GUIDELINES ON CONCUSSIONS.   ALL  COACHES HAVE NOW TAKEN A MANDATORY TRAINING ON CONCUSSION AWARENESS, ATHLETES AND PARENTS HAVE WATCHED A VIDEO ON CONCUSSION AWARENESS AND LITERATURE WILL BE GOING HOME TO ALL ATHLETES AND PARENTS.   THIS IS ALL TO ENSURE THAT OUR ATHLETES REMAIN SAFE OFF THE COURT AND FIELD.  THE GUIDELINES REVOLVE AROUND THE PHRASE "WHEN IN DOUBT, SIT THEM OUT."  IF AT ANY TIME WE SUSPECT YOUR SON/DAUGHTER MAY HAVE SUSTAINED AN IMPACT THAT MAY PRODUCE A CONCUSSION, WE WILL BE TAKING THEM OUT OF THE GAME.  PLEASE OPEN THE DOCUMENTS BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ON OUR PROCEDURES.  THE MAIN IDEAS OF OUR PROCEDURES WILL ENTAIL THAT ANY ATHLETES THAT ARE SUSPECTED OF HAVING A CONCUSSION WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RETURN TO PRACTICE OR PLAY UNTIL SYMPTOM FREE FOR 24 HOURS WILL HAVE TO BE CLEARED BY THEIR DOCTOR AND OUR SCHOOL PHYSICIAN.   AT THAT TIME, THEY WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH A FIVE STEP GRADUAL PROGRAM DURING PRACTICES TO BE ABLE TO RETURN TO A GAME.   IF AT ANY POINT THE ATHLETE'S SYMPTOMS RETURN, THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO START AT STEP ONE.
AS COACHES,  DUE TO POSITIONING OF THE TEAM ON THE FIELD OR OBSTRUCTION OF VIEW, WE MAY NOT ALWAYS SEE THOSE IMPACTS.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ATHLETE, OTHER TEAM MEMBERS, PARENTS AND FANS LET US KNOW IF THEY SEE SOMETHING WE HAVE NOT.   IN ADDITION IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT THE ATHLETE TELL US WHEN THEY ARE NOT FEELING RIGHT.   IT IS WRONG FOR ANY ATHLETE  NOT TO REPORT AN INJURY TO A COACH.  PLAYING A GAME IS NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN FURTHERING AN INJURY.   NEVER PLAY INJURED.
