We have had many parents ask us as a PTO “what can we do about all the changes within our elementary schools,” “who can we talk to about these changes?” With that in mind, the HESPTO Board wants to give everyone information as HVRSD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Smith and the school board are starting the process of discussing the school budget for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Our goal is to share helpful information with the HES community about the budget planning and voting process, school board meetings and what is at stake with this upcoming school budget. We hope to build awareness for our families to let you know how to make your voices heard and how to get involved as it relates to our schools and the district.
Every Hopewell Elementary family can be a part of the process to address concerns and any issues that may be of importance to them.
Below is an excerpt from Dr. Smith’s weekly message sent out on December 2nd for your reference. If you ever want to contact Dr. Smith for any reason his office number is 609- 737-4000 and his email is tomsmith@hvrsd.org (all listed on the district website as well).
“I encourage you to participate in these conversations and share your opinions regarding the programs and services you value. In January, the Board of Education will begin public budget discussions on the 2012-13 budget to be voted on in April, 2012. Board meeting dates are listed on our website. As I have done in the past, I will be holding coffee klatches to meet with members of our community, please check our website for dates. In addition, I continue to host an open-phone hour each morning from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. to discuss any topic.
Please become part of this process so that we many continue to provide our community with a school district and budget that reflect our values.”
We want to ensure that our parents are kept informed as best as possible, so please mark your calendars to attend any of the school board meetings listed below and also know that you can speak at these meetings about any ideas, issues or concerns you may have.
School Board Meeting Schedule
Most meetings are held at the Administration Building, 425 S. Main Street, but some meetings during the budget time will be held at the High school, so please double check the website for any changes prior to attending. You can go to http://www2.hvrsd.org/Pages/Default.aspx and click on the “board of education” heading for the meeting schedule.

Hopewell Valley continues to move in a paperless direction in its home-school communications, launching the Virtual Backpack in 2009 to replace its weekly dispatches of flyers, notices and other information of interest to parents and guardians.
An online clearinghouse of information, the Virtual Backpack carries all of the notices, flyers, principals’ newsletters and other materials that formerly came home in the Wednesday folders of elementary students.
